Honda Passport owners have reported 92 problems related to automatic emergency braking (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Passport based on all problems reported for the Passport.
The front multipurpose camera system failed, triggering multiple safety warning lights simultaneously, including acc (adaptive cruise control), lkas (lane keeping assist system), and related camera-dependent safety systems, along with a "multipurpose camera unit" fault code u3000-49. The failure pattern has been intermittent and inconsistent: on some drives, warning lights are absent at startup and appear after several minutes of driving; on other occasions the warnings appear immediately at startup; duration before onset varies from trip to trip. This vehicle falls within the range covered by a prior Honda recall (recall 19-020 / NHTSA campaign for 2019-2020 Passport) addressing software programming errors in the front control module causing improper display of instrument panel and delayed or missing rearview camera images. The current failure presents similar camera-related safety system symptoms. A dealership inspection recommended replacement of the multipurpose camera unit at an estimated cost of approximately $2,000, without confirming the root cause of the failure. Safety concern: loss of acc, lkas, and related driver-assist camera systems while driving, with warnings appearing unpredictably during operation, some minutes into a drive rather than at startup, suggesting a fault that may not always be evident during a pre-drive check.

My 2026 Honda Passport has experienced two separate “phantom breaking” events while I was driving on clear roadways without any other traffic. Both events occurred while driving with cruise control set at 35 mph.
My 2026 Honda Passport trailsport elite has twice applied its brakes on its own, with no obstacle, vehicle, or hazard in front of me to justify braking. On July 13, 2026, at approximately 5:36 p. M. , I was driving in evening traffic when the vehicle suddenly braked hard on its own. Nothing was in front of me. The car behind me nearly rear-ended me and had to brake sharply to avoid a collision, and the driver reacted with road rage. On July 16, 2026, at approximately 6:03 p. M. , my young son was in the vehicle with me. While I was driving in traffic, the vehicle again braked on its own with no obstacle ahead. A sedan behind me nearly rear-ended me. This sudden, uncommanded braking happens without warning while I am driving in traffic and has nearly caused a rear-end collision on both occasions. It is terrifying and I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle, especially with my child. The same vehicle also has ongoing electrical and drive-power failures (loss of power while driving, repeated stalling in reverse, and complete no-start events) that I have reported separately. Three dealerships have been unable to identify or correct the problems. No crash has occurred yet, but only because the drivers behind me reacted in time. The vehicle is available for inspection.
There has been multiple times that my 2019 Passport has had the “brake” indicator pop up on my dash telling me to brake when there is nothing there I mean like a completely empty road. There has been a handful of times that it has actually stopped my car like slammed the brakes when there is nothing around or a couple times when a car was passing on the other side of the roadway. This has happened multiple times with someone driving behind me and I fear it could cause a crash due to the car randomly braking so hard.

It's a sunny day in florida and approximately at [xxx] while traveling straight on a public roadway, the vehicle directly in front of me moved into the left-turn lane, completely clearing my lane of travel. As I actively accelerated to pass the turning vehicle, my Honda’s collision mitigation braking system (cmbs) inadvertently activated despite my lane being completely clear and unobstructed. The emergency automatic braking engaged forcefully just after I passed the vehicle in the left-turn lane. This unexpected, false-positive braking event caused a severe, rapid deceleration that nearly resulted in a rear-end collision by the vehicle traveling behind me. This exact situation has occurred on 3 other separate occasions. I'm in fear of being rear-ended, especially with my kids in the car, because my vehicle body language prior to the forceful braking has been acceleration. The drivers behind me are likely to see my acceleration and proceed with their own acceleration just to be blind-sided with my vehicles sudden and hard braking. It's a disaster waiting to happen, especially on busy roadways. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I purchased this vehicle at the end of February 2026. Since the purchase this vehicle has on numerous occasions for no reason applied the brakes and made the steering wheel shake. This has almost caused an accident on several occasions, with today another instance on 5-23-2026. I would turn the system off but from what I understand it re-engages itself after every drive. I like the vehicle but im afraid that its going to cause an accident or someones death. Had I known that I couldn't permanently turn off this dangerous system I would have never bought it and bought a Lexus SUV instead. Honda should give their customers who want to turn this system off a way to do so.
Driving to work in normal speeds and conditions. The emergency braking enabled and slammed on the brakes to my car - despite there being no threat or need. The brake was with such force that I jerked forward. This is the third time this has happened with this car in the past week. Car is available for inspection if needed. The car has not yet been inspected by Honda for this situation.

I was traveling over highwayxx headed toward [xxx] , traveling has seen a 50 miles an hour when my 2019 Passport auto braked without me putting my foot on the brake. When this happened, the car fish tailed towards the center divide, almost hit the cement divide, and I had to correct my steering four times in order to avoid traffic, or crashing into a forest of mature trees. Because of these multiple corrections that I had to make, I ended up swerving in and out of both lanes and my car was out of control for a significant amount of time. It almost hit the center divide of highway 17. At one point, I was at 180° angle, almost going the other direction. The auto braking of this vehicle, almost got me killed. 2025 Honda Passport with 10k miles ***braking issues - -collision mitigation system going off randomly and often, with no oncoming traffic, no obstacles or obstructions. -phantom braking and “brake” warning/steering wheel shake. Occurs often on windy, hilly roads with sharp curves, often to the right. Branches, guard rails, etc will activate the system at high speeds 50 mph and over, causing serious safety concerns of the vehicle stopping for no true cause. -white cars in oncoming traffic seemingly activate the “brake” warning on occasion. -“brake” warning went off and significantly slowed the car when a water filled pothole was to the right. -issues have occurred with no cars ahead of the Passport. ***engine issues after getting fuel - -after getting gas, check engine, power steering, and battery light will sometimes turn on. Only resolution is to restart the vehicle. -brake pedal was also hard/stuck after getting gas, and vehicle could not be turned on until brake was pushed extremely hard/pumped. Power steering light came on after this incident. ***lights- -automatic adjusting high beams turn on and off erratically. Cannot use the automated system. ***transmission- -engine braking downhill on one or two occasions would not allow car to shift back up. Had to use paddle shifters to get the car moving again. Dealership cannot replicate these issues on a short ride with their tech, therefore the vehicle is “fine. ”.

Brakes were being applied when no cars were around me. Now, 5 warnings were given to me as I drove down the highway. The warnings were as follows: adaptive cruise control problem collision mitigation system problem road departure mitigation system problem lane keeping assist problemauto high-beam problem brake system light.
Even after recall repairs the vehicle continues to randomly display error messages with vehicle systems while driving. It has been cleared several times and battery changed but continues to return. This model has serious issues with the electrical components.
Was driving 47 mph at 12:35 est on a clear sunny day and car braked automatically. No car in front of me.
I was driving approximately 70 mph, on a freeway in rain; I moved to the passing lane to go around a semi-truck. Spray from the semi was heavy but I could still see the road. Suddenly, the car brakes engaged very strongly. We were jolted forward in our seats. Had a car been following me, that driver may not have had time to brake himself. I believe the dash flashed a large braking sign. It only happened once. I'm reporting it to the dealer tomorrow for the first time.
The lane keep assist camera internally faulted and intermittent tries to work but will immediately fault out. Lights will show for adaptive cruise, lane departure, and collision avoidance. Code shows internal fault and is shown in bulletin to replace. Happened begining of 2025 like most other people.
Car slammed on brakes while on interstate, the system likes to say brake, brake, brake, when there is nothing to brake for but a few days ago it actually took action and slammed on brakes on the freeway.
I was in my 2026 Honda Passport with ~450 miles driven at time of incident, 1445est on 14 October 2025. I was driving ~58mph down a road in columbia county, GA. I was on a straightaway with no bends/turns. There were no obstructions on the road, no oncoming traffic, and no vehicle in visible sight in front of me. The weather was sunny, no clouds in the sky and no shadows across the road. My Passport braked suddenly, causing me to sharply decelerate, jerking my head and body quickly. If anyone were behind me at the time, they may have potentially struck my vehicle due to the sharp deceleration.
My front windshield camera. Yes because of my camera having glitches my car would randomly brake no my front camera won't work at all and my dashboard looks like a christmas light show with all the warning lights it has been confirmed by a independent service center no no,no warning lamps no messages or other symptoms of the problem prior. To the failure everything happened at all once on oct3 2025.
The cmbs alerts braking despite there being no obstacles in front or around the vehicle. Also, the at stop lights when the engine shuts off, on several occasions the car has completely turned off and will not let you do anything (place in park or drive) until you manually start it again.
At random times, the dashboard will show "brake" repeatedly when there is nothing obstructing the road or any other vehicles nearby. We have also experienced at least a half dozen times when the car will flash that and engage the brakes stopping us in the middle of traffic. The braking is abrupt and will yank you harshly in the seatbelt. I have taken it to the dealership twice and Honda has said nothing can be found in the computer and "the next time it happens to take a pic or video". That is impossible to do and is now happening enough where I considering getting rid of the vehicle but hate to pass that on to another person. When happening in traffic, I cant imagine explaining to emergency response that I was rear ended when the car smashed on the brakes but Honda has no way of confirming that. I dont know what else to do and am grateful to see others are experiencing this and informing you all of this safety issue!.
Driving around 40 miles an hour on interstate during torrential rain around 4 pm. Visibility was bad and could see about 30 feet ahead. Car automatically slammed on break (adas brake light came on) and came to an abrupt stop 2 or 3 times as a tried to get car moving again. Luckily all traffic was driving slow and car behind was staying a good distance back. Otherwise I probably would have been rear-ended. This area is also under construction so some old road lines have been grinded down and new lines repainted to new traffic pattern. I have had the car brake and light come on2-3x before when I thought it shouldn't have. This is the first time it was so abrupt and did it several times back to back that I was scared for my safety.
“road departure mitigation system problem” is the error that comes up on the dash. The error shuts down cruise control and slows the car down unexpectedly. I’ve taken the vehicle to the Honda dealer in tampa florida where I purchased it and they will not fix the vehicle. The error is a safety issue slowing the vehicle down in traffic and a driver distraction triggered by the collision mitigation system and roadway departure system.

While driving and pressing on gas the car started beeping and started to brake. There was no obstruction in front of me to cause this. The break flashing signal didn’t come on. It just beeped and started to brake and then stopped.
I purchased a used 2021 Passport the end of may 2025. While driving, the 'collision mitigation braking system' or cmbs would activate the braking system and would intermittently just brake, causing panic for not only myself, but I'm sure drivers behind me for suddenly braking with no imminent threat in from of me. This happened multiple times without receiving any warning or notifications, just suddenly. It would happen without warning, or sometimes nearing a bridge or a cover plate on the road, which almost caused accidents multiple times to get rear ended. I have driven for decades and never felt anxiety until I drove this vehicle for a few months. I felt scared driving this vehicle, feeling uncertain when it would suddenly just brake. Eventually after a few months of driving, I got a reading that said cmbs problem on the screen. I scheduled an appointment with the dealer. The dealer suggested a near $3000 replacement for a camera (on a 2021 vehicle). At the appointment, I ultimately returned this vehicle to the dealer where I bought it and unfortunately lost out on thousands of dollars after having the vehicle about 6 months. I have always liked Honda, and have had 2 prior Hondas, but with this vehicle purchase, I felt the most unsafe I have ever felt in a vehicle, and moving forward will not feel comfortable purchasing Honda.
Numerous times over the past year, the Passports forward collision warning system and automatic braking system have incorrectly alerted and automatically braked the vehicle when it was not warranted in the situation. This occurs most frequently when on a two lane undivided road (with one lane traveling in each direction). While driving on these roads, the vehicle is frequently incorrectly judging a head on collision will occur with oncoming traffic, and start the audible and visual warning system and sometimes also automatic braking. In these instances both vehicles are well within their side of the roadway and no collision is remotely close to occurring. However the automatic hard braking could cause a rear end collision with the vehicle behind me. Seems to be most common on curvy sections of roadway.
Today, I was merging off [xxx] to [xxx] with no cars or obstacles around and the automatic braking system deployed and the car briefly slammed on the brakes and when I pressed down on the gas it released itself. Lucky no cars were behind me at the time but it did scare my wife and I at the time. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Incident # 1. June 2025 vehicle has approximately 3400 miles on it. I was driving southbound on I 35 freeway in the lakeville minnesota area. I was in the center lane of the freeway traveling at about 65 mph. Traffic was light. There was no one in front of me. Suddenly, the car broke hard. I was thrust forward against the seatbelt with my hands, pushing against the steering wheel as the car slowed rapidly and came to an abrupt stop from 65 miles an hour. I had no ability to get the car to go. The gas pedal had no effect as this car came to a rapid stop. I found myself stopped in the center lane of the freeway frantically looking around to see what cars were coming, can I find the four way flashers. A car passed me in the right lane and a car passed me in the left lane. Then I was able to limp over to the shoulder out of the traffic lanes. I shut the car off immediately and tried to compose myself. After a moment or two, I turned the engine back on and the car operated normally. At the dealership they fixed some things but they said they didn’t find anything that was directly related to the unexpected rapid braking. Incident #2. July 2025 vehicle has approximately 4300 miles I was driving northbound on 35e taking the entrance ramp to eastbound highway 36. I was driving on the entrance ramp beginning to accelerate to highway speed. There were no vehicles in front of me, not on the ramp, or on the highway. As I neared the end of the ramp the vehicle suddenly broke hard thrusting me forward again. It came to a complete stop. Fortunately, for the second time, there was no one behind me. This was the second time the vehicle engaged the brakes in an emergency stop for no reason. The dealership said they couldn’t find anything cause of the incident. The vehicle remains at the dealership. I have requested reimbursement of my purchase price from Honda. We have an arbitration hearing schedlued on oct 27, 2025.

The vehicle infotainment system froze. Several minutes later after driving, I pressed the brakes but they did not function. The vehicle would not stop and crashed into the vehicle in front of me. Emergency braking did not engage or otherwise show signs of activation. After turning off the car and dealing with the accident, I restarted the vehicle and the brakes and infotainment system operated normally.
My automati braking has repeatedly malfunctioned and deployed emergency braking when no other vehicle is in the front of mine.
Every time I am on a two lane road and am navigating a right hand curve at any speed and a white car or truck is in oncoming traffic, in their lane, the vehicle alerts me to brake. The system beeps and flashes brake! on the instrument panel. This happens each time as if the cameras are not calibrated correctly. It's incredibly annoying and happens every time even with the system turned down as low as Honda will allow. This could be very distracting to many drivers. I have chosen to just ignore the system which is not a good situation.
The idle-stop system engages as expected when the vehicle comes to a stop, but the engine fails to restart when I release the brake pedal. This leaves me stranded in traffic and vulnerable to collisions, especially in high-traffic areas like intersections. The car has completely stalled and remains frozen for at least 3 minutes. Instrument panel lights up and says to depress pedal fully and press the start button. Another message says something about being in neutral and then to put it in park. I'm doing what it says and I cannot get the car to start. I have a green light and I'm stuck in an intersection where opposing traffic has a green light as well. People are honking at me and nervous because of the unpredictibilty of my car. - frequency: this occurs at least 1x/month for the past 65 months (lifetime of the vehicle) - conditions: occurs during normal driving conditions, typically in stop-and-go traffic. - impact: this issue has resulted in significant delays and near-misses with other vehicles, posing a clear safety hazard. The vehicle has been evaluated by a Honda dealer regarding idle-stop system malfunction specifically on the following dates October 1st, 2020, February 2nd 2023, March 16th, 2023 may 11th 2023, November 7th 2024 and January 9th 2025. The vehicle was found to be in normal working order and multiple times I was told to disengage the auto idle stop (press the button) to prevent that from happening. There was a recall for idle-stop software update which failed to repair the issue. This has been a persistent problem and the above dates by no means reflects the only times that the engine fails to restart after auto-stopping.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda Passport. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the forward collision avoidance system activated and briefly applied the automatic emergency braking system before returning to normal functionality. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The forward collision avoidance warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 35,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Passport. The contact stated while driving at 22 mph, "the collision mitigation braking system" warning message illuminated. the contact stated the vehicle applied the emergency brakes independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 25,950.
The automatic braking system will activate at various times shaking the wheel and applying the brakes. This happens when there is nothing in front of the vehicle.
On Nov 9, 2024 I was pulling into a parking spot in a public parking garage, after turning 2 tight corners to approach the parking spot. About half way into the parking spot, the car suddenly lurched and accelerated and I crashed into a 90 degree concrete corner wall! it happened so fast, without any warning sounds or abs brakes deploying. The entire front passenger corner of my car was badly damaged. Luckily I was not injured, nor were there any other vehicles or persons involved. It is just not possible that I could have personally pulled into a parking spot at such a high speed as to cause such extreme damage to the vehicle! I drove the vehicle to a body shop on 11/11/24, which was one recommended by my insurance company. The vehicle was inspected by the body shop, which was directly in contact with my insurance company. I did ask the shop to make sure the mechanic checked for any safety issues during repair, as I was concerned as to the cause of the accident. I have an impeccable driving record and I cannot explain how such an accident could happen! I had no issues with the car previously. Upon further inspection into the damage, on 1/3/25 it was finally evaluated as a total loss, as there was damage to the frame and other issues! I did receive a statement on 1/3/25 from the body shop that there was a "fault in the system, causing gas pedal lock, which might be cause of accident". I felt I had to report this possible issue that resulted in a total loss and obviously could have injured myself, others or other vehicles!.
