1 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

When driving 30-50mph my 2005 Honda Pilot shudder/vibrates as if I'm driving on a rumble strip. I bought my Pilot at 113,000 in 2017 and I noticed the issue first at about 120,000 miles. I now have 134,000 miles and the research I'm doing on this issue suggests there is a major defect with Honda/Acura transmission and or torque converters. What can I do at this point?.

2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2016

At 105,000 miles I took my 2005 Honda Pilot for some preventative maintenance-oil change, transmission service, and an air bag recall. The mechanic noted that the vehicle shuddered on his test drive. Now the d light is blinking and the vehicle does shudder between 35-50 mph. The service writer alex schenbeck at dick's Honda in hillsboro said he didn't notice the mechanics note and had no idea what this could be. After doing some research this is a very common problem. Acura issued a recall on the mdx for the exact same problem caused by a design flaw in the torque converter. On the NHTSA website there have been 208 complaints on the 2004-2005 Honda Pilot transmission and 66 complaints on the torque converter specifically. I will be contacting Honda north America to see if they are interested in helping a loyal Honda customer or losing my business for life.

3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2015

The powertrain has a very irritating vibration when accelerating through or holding it at 35 - 40 mph. The vibration lasts about 5 seconds and has a very odd noise that happens at the exact same time. Kind of like deep base. All info I can find points to the torque converter and my mechanic says all his information points to the torque converter also.

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

When I slow down from going higher then 40 miles per hour my Pilot shudders between 35 and 40. It quits at about 35 but it started happening a year ago and does it every time I drive now. I have read on line of other Pilots doing the same thing. Seems tome this is a recall issue as well as a safety one if my transmission quits because of defective torque converter as a dealer once told me. I don't want to pay the costs of a new transmission when it sounds like a defect. I am getting airbag recall fixed this week I plan to ask about this problem. Thank you, carol schinker.

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

Vehicle shudders at 40-45 mph. Causes severe shaking that could hinder driving ability especially in slippery conditions. Lots of complaints on internet related to torque converter and motor mounts. Threats of class action suit against Honda for multiple people complaining of this ongoing problem.

6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2014

Transmission shudder between 35-40 mph. This is a well known problem that is caused by a failing torque converter.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2013

I bought a used 05 Pilot 1 year ago for my wife and boys. Vehicle started to shudder at around 30-40 mph. I remember my mother having this same thing happen to her Acura mdx and she was told she needed a whole new transmission. I looked up what was happening to our Pilot and have found hundreds of other complaints dealing with this same issue! Acura even put out a service bulletin (06-003) addressing the problem of the torque converter in the transmission and stated that even if the vehicle was out of warranty owners may be eligible for a goodwill consideration to have the problem fixed free of charge. This shows that they are aware of the problem and expected to have many such complaints. Honda Pilot has the same engine/transmission as it is the same company and needs to issue a recall!!! if I am expected to pay $11,000 for a used 05 Pilot with 130k miles on it I should not also be expected to pay an additional $4,000 to replace the transmission less than a year later!!! if Honda is proud enough of their product to charge that high amount to begin with they need to back it up with quality that matches the price!! please issue a recall on this so people don't have to continue to throw money down the drain in this economy!.

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Transmission shudders at 35-40 mph apparently due to faulty torque converters and transmissions installed in these vehicles. There are numerous instances of premature transmission failures documented on this vehicle. It can cause the vehicle to stop suddenly, and is a hazard. These torque converters and transmissions should be recalled.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2013

I have a 2005 Honda Pilot sometime shuddering between 30-40 mph. To make the shudder stop, I press or release the accelerator briefly. After checking on line about this problems with over 300 complaints. They all state that the torque converter cause the vibration. Honda still not recall. Couple of times someone almost rear end me. Please look into this problem.

10 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

Transmission shudder between 35-40 mph. This is a well known problem that is caused by a failing torque converter.

11 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

There is a shuddering in the transmission that is getting worse over time. It seems to be happening around 35-40 mph. I have changed the fluid, and spoke to numerous mechanics, and they all seem to just blow it off . Or say they never heard of it before. But while reading the forums on the internet, there are many people who are experiencing the same issue with these vehicles and similar vehicles with the same drive trains. This should be investigated for a recall of the transmission or torque converter before someone gets killed.

12 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

When the vehicle gets to about 30 mph you feel a shudder in the transmission. After momentarily losing inertia, the vehicle is able to increase speed and continue without hesitation. I've had the dealer check it and they think it may be a faulty torque converter. This has been ongoing for a number of years.

13 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

I would be driving in the 30 mph range and the vehicle would start to shudder when changing gears. The distraction causes me to stop in traffic and suddenly pull over. Pohanka Honda in salisbury, MD states it is a bad torque converter. There are hundreds of complaint about this issue on the internet about the 2005 Honda Pilot, but complaints reflect there was no recall. Now I am out of warranty. If I am not contacting the correct entity, please refer me. Thank you.

14 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2011

2005 Honda Pilot with 58,000 miles has transmission shutter at 25 to 40 mph under light throttle. Has had all services done with factory fluids and filters since I bought the vehicle new. Looking at the searchs some say it's torque converter and other have replaced complete transmission. Dealer told me the other day Pilots don't have these problems but the odyssey have the issue. So I asked how much to fix the problem and he said $ 2000. 00 . Well iam glad that I bought the factory extended warranty and have a year left of warranty an iam making a appt, to have it repaired before the warranty runs out. Honda should recall the transmissions like they did on the Acura mdx since they both have the same power train.

15 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The vehicle in question, a 2005 Honda Pilot ex shudders at or between 35 to 40 mph. It has almost cost me to lose control and possibly my life. This is a "known" torque converter problem to Honda, yet they refuse to address their negligence. Sudden, unexpected braking, without brake application is terrifying and also due to manufacturing defects. The steering controls often veer to the right without any apparent cause.

16 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2011

Tl the contact owns a 2005 Honda Pilot. The contacted was driving 30 mph when the vehicle started shaking as the gears were shifted into a higher gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated they could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was then taken to a local mechanic who inspected the vehicle and advised that the torque converter was defective. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who advised the contact to take the vehicle toa second dealer for further inspection. The vehicle had not yet been repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 122,000. Kmj.

17 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the transmission would need to be flushed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was returned to the mechanic, who informed the contact that the rotors were warped and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was then informed that the torque converter would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.

18 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2011

2005 Honda Pilot. Shuddered & vibrated at 40 mph starting at around 70-75k miles. Determined that it was a defective torque converter known to Honda but no recall. Issue led to complete transmission failure on highway and replacement of entire tranmission, torque converter .

19 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2011

I have a shuttering noise when I accelerate between 30-40 mph. I complained about this to the dealer prior to expiration of the extended warranty, when I took it in for a window switch problem. They told me they did not hear any noise. To my dismay, the problem progressed and became worse, so now after the expiration of the extended warranty (8/8/11), took it back to the dealer and said it was the torque converter on the transmission. They stated they can fix it for over $5000. 00 even though I complained about it previously. Their are many complaints about this online, I have since found over 300 complaints about this issue with the Honda Pilots and Honda is aware of the issue but does not want to help fix this problem. Apparently, Honda tried to cut costs and put a transmission in that could not accommodate the weight and size of the vehicle - this is coming from 3 different mechanics and a junk yard owner. Also the parts are so hard to come by if you try to get done cheaper by an outside mechanic. The Honda dealers are the only ones who are able to get the parts faster. Thus creating a monopoly. I have researched this thoroughly and you too can find a lot of dissatisfied owners that had or having the exact same issue with Honda. Please look into this. We should not have to pay for this problem with so many people having the same issue. Thank you.

20 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2011

Bought a 2005 Honda Pilot based on past historical high reliability reviews of Honda vehicles. Very disappointed. Around 75000 miles, vehicle began to shudder like driving over a washboard road when lightly accelerating 30-40 mph. First thought out of balance tire, rebalanced tires. Still didn't solve problem, bought new tires, rebalanced and aligned. Problem still existed. Began to research online and very disappointed to find this is a very common problem with the tranny, torque converter, and/or transmission coolant failure. Took to dealer, diagnosed as bad torque converter, $2000. Dealer does not plan to cover, I plan on taking up with NHTSA and Honda America.

21 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2011

I have a 2005 Honda Pilot with 57,000 miles on it that I just recently bought. I am having concerns about the torque converter I have been researching about. My car will accelerate in the 32-45 mph window and then the rpm needle will jump back down to a lower rpm. Alot of the jumping needle is happening. The car will shudder at these speeds and will feel as if the transmission is letting up when I get to these speeds, hence the rpm needle coming back down. The car has already gone in for work on the relay switch which was shorting the car out briefly when I was driving.

22 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2011

Shudder in transmission; torque converter problem. This occurs at 1500 to 2000 rpm and around 35 to 40 mph. Honda dealer wanted $4500 to replace both the torque converter and transmission.

23 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2011

Transmission shuddering between 35 mph - 40 mph on level grade roads. Not apparent under moderate or heavy acceleration or on uphill grades. Transmission mechanic confirms torque converter failing - typical Honda SUV & van problem he sees all the time. No recall from Honda, vehicle mileage is 85,000.

24 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

My 2005 Honda Pilot experiences a shudder when applying light acceleration between 35-40 mph, I have done extensive research and have found many more consumers that have reported the same problem and have found that Honda is to blame for installing faulty torque converters.

25 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

2005 Honda Pilot stutters, vibrations, and has flashing "d" (drive) light on. Possible torque converter and/or transmission issues.

26 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2010

Car shutters or vibrates around 25-35 miles per hour during normal acceleration. It appears that that tires are out of alignment, but after taking my car in for a tire balance and alignment it was determined to be the transmission. It happens whether the car is cold or warm. I was told that the torque converter could fix the vibrations, but the design flaw is with the whole transmission. This started at around 72,600 miles on the vehicle, and has progressively gotten worse. It has only been a month, but after doing some research I found this to be a common design flaw with the 2005 Pilot. My local service department was able to negotiate 75% coverage of the approximately $3,300 repair bill by Honda to replace my transmission even though it is out of warranty. I feel it should be 100% and plan on pursuing this issue with Honda of America. I was told Honda wouldn't cover anything after 75,000 miles. I feel Honda needs to step up and own this well documented issue, but it is cheaper to deal with the one off complaints than admit fault and issue a recall.

27 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Vehicle has noticeable shimmering/shuttering between 30-50 mph, noticed over a year ago. Soon after the drive indicator light would flash intermittently, although both seem transmission related, they did not seem to correlate. Over time the shimmering/shuttering seems to be more frequent and pronounced and the drive indicator seems to blink more frequently. After researching on the internet, it does not appear to be an isolated incident as there are many other 2005 Honda Pilots with similar symptoms at different stages of transmission 'failure' or complete failure. Have not seen a formal release from Honda (like with Acura mdx issue which sounds too similar), but like with the TSB on the mdx, many problems seem to be resolved with replacement of torque converter or complete transmission. I don't expect any sympathy from Honda so I am going to have our Pilot diagnosed and repaired by a private mechanic (Honda service is way too expensive) but wanted to file a formal complaint on this issue in the hopes that if it becomes big enough maybe others will benefit from Honda having to get involved at some point.

28 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Pilot. While driving approximately 35 mph the vehicle began to vibrate and shudder. Once the consumer accelerated up to approximately 40 mph the failure stopped. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle traveled at a speed of approximately 35 mph. An authorized dealer was notified and informed the contact that the failure was caused by the torque converter. The contact was also told that the software for the transmission needed to be adjusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 125,000 and the current mileage is 159,000. Updated 03/08/11 updated 03/09/11.

29 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

2005 Honda Pilot has torque converter shutter/vibration between 35-40 mph. This issue has been addressed on the Acura mdx, 2003-2004 models, and the torque converter is being replaced at no charge. See Acura service bulletin 06-003. The Honda and the Acura have the same parts! should be investigated before this becomes a life or death matter!.

30 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2009

My Honda Pilot 2005 shudders at about 35-50 mph speeds. The shuddering lasts for about 10-15 seconds. The shuddering goes away by either increasing or decreasing the speed. This problem has been happening for a few years. Today I am sitting at the Honda dealership and I complained about the shuddering and the Honda technician mentioned that the torque converter might be the problem. I researched on this site and there are complaints for this issue. I was wondering what could be done about it. Thanks.

31 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that the vehicle would vibrate excessively when driving at low speeds. The vibration would cease once the vehicle would reach 50 mph. Once the contact slowed down and proceeded to accelerate, the vibration would return. The contact was advised by his personal mechanic that the tires were possibly the cause of the failure. The tires were replaced yet the failure persisted. The mechanic then advised that the failure was caused by the torque converter. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 126,445.

32 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2009

My 2005 Honda Pilot has a bad torque converter causing the transmission to shudder or vibrate between 35-45 mph. I was told by my service man that the transmission could just lock up which is a safety issue.

33 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2008

I have a 2005 Pilot Honda with ongoing shuddering between 30-40 mph. At first I though it was the air flow under the vehicle through the pvc molding. After checking I have been told this is a transmission problem (torque converter) the shudder began at 75,000 and the vehicle now has125,000 miles. To make the shudder stop I press or release the accelerator briefly. The transmission is now starting to shift hard into second gear. I will contact Honda of north America next to discuss their findings with this problem.

34 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2008

2005 Honda Pilot torque converter issue when pressing the gas pedal lightly going from 30mph-40mph the car begins to shudder/vibrate. Then pressing the gas pedal a little more the shuddering ceases after passing 45mph. Problem started around 70,000 mi. Now car is around 84,000 mi and problem still persists. Have not corrected failure.

35 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2007

Since purchasing my car ,a 2005 Honda Pilot, in 2007, I have experienced a shuttering that occurs at around 40 miles per hour. Honda will not accept responsibility for the thousands of owners experiencing the same problem. The problem is coming from the torque converter/transmission, around a $3,000 to $5,000 to fix and Honda is not accepting responsibilty for it. . . Please do not purchase a Honda if your thinking about it. . . Go Toyota! at least Toyota stands behind their mistakes!.
