On multiple occasions, when stopped at a red light or stop sign, the car will auto-idle and not restart, causing the car to stall.
The Pilot has exhibited unusual behavior that seems tied to the autostop functionality when at a stop light. Three times now I will let my foot off the brake and the car completely shuts down. When I try to restart the vehicle, the accessory power turns on but the vehicle will not start. It will start to turn over, but the turn over terminates abruptly and the car completely shuts off. The behavior seems similar to what is in the NHTSA action number pe22005.
No power it feels like it’s stock.
On Feb 17th I was on a 4. 5 hour trip. I wasn’t experiencing any issues with my vehicle until the last 20 min of the trip. I exited the highway to refill with gas before the final leg home. I pulled into the gas station, shut off my Pilot, and refueled. Upon restarting my vehicle the vehicle wouldn’t start. After several failed attempts I needed to jump start the vehicle to get it started. Once it started I didn’t have another issue. I took my vehicle in for testing and found no issues with the battery or starter. This was the second occurrence so I purchased a portable battery charger for when this happens again.
2 weeks ago, my car stalled as I was driving down the highway and attempting to pass another vehicle. I was going around 45 mph, the engine stalled, the speed dropped down to about 33 and would not let me accelerate. There was not a warning light. Fortunately, there was not a car to my left so I was able to pull over. I turned the car off and it restarted. I took it to the shop a few days later and sat there for 5 hours while they ran diagnostics. They could not get the car to replicate nor did a code come on so they asked me if I could leave it. I left it for a few days and they still could not get the diagnostic code to come on nor could they get it to replicate. They did not have a rental or I would have left it longer. I will continue to call them to see if they have a rental so I can leave it longer.
At random times, but seemingly becoming a more frequent occurence, when the stop/start system engages & shuts the vehicle down at idle (at a stop light for example), the vehicle will not restart for a period of time afterwards. This has also happened on the highway multiple times in traffic in which the vehicle will not start for a short period of time. This is a big safety issue and I was almost rear-ended a couple of times in those highway cases. When the problem happens, the lighting on the meter (indicator lights) will randomly flash & the clicking sound from the blinker will continuously go on/off during the timeframe of when the vehicle will not restart. I've raised this concern to Honda multiple times with no support coming back from them since they can't re-create the issue.
This has been an on-going problem since the beginning of the year. For at least the past 7000 miles of driving, my 2019 Honda Pilot has been juttering (Honda mechanic's term-not mine). Pursuant to a Honda technical service bulletin on this issue, I paid $1967. 06 to change the fuel injectors and spark plugs in the vehicle. This did not resolve the problem. Anthony hart, customer complaint manager from Honda headquarters in torrance, CA, told me I had to take the vehicle to the local Honda service department and pay the $106. 99 it charged for an analysis and recommendation for the repair. I did that. The mechanic acknowledged the problem and suggested to flush the transmission fluid and to perform a throttle body service with re-learn at a cost of $901. 08. This appeared to be more of an "upcharge for service" rather than a resolution for the repair. Also, I was dealing with anthony who insisted upon the evaluation in order for him to authorize some compensation for such. Therefore, I declined the service pending anthony's response. Each time I get to speak with mr. Hart, it is almost as if I am a first time contact. I have to reiterate that I am now into the repairs to this vehicle in the amount of $2074. 05 with an additional suggested item of $901. 08. The costs would therefore total $2975. 13 with no guarantee that the issue will be resolved! it is unconscionable that Honda recognizes the issue being so common in my car that it has issued a technical service bulletin; however, the suggested repair does not work. Honda has not issued a recall on this issue; nor has it apparently been willing to reimburse me for the repairs thus far. We are afraid to take the vehicle on long trips for fear of being stranded somewhere.
I was coming to a stop at a red light and the car shut off . It flashed a transmission issue and emissions issue on the dash. I tried to restart and it would start but not move or let me shift into gear leaving me stranded in the middle of a busy road. It took for an officer to remove my battery cable and then reconnect for me to be able to move the vehicle out of the road and into a parking lot. I had the car towed to the nearest Honda dealership where they saw the messages on the dash. While they test drove it all errors went away and they can’t locate an issue.
Since we purchased the vehicle back in 2019, the truck would stall and want to shut off during driving on and off. We received the recall information back in August and were told to call and make an appointment to service the recall. Back in August they said they didn't have enough parts in stock to service the recall and they would call me when more parts became available. Now we are in December and the truck is getting worse and we have not received any information regarding service to it. We have two young children in the car with us daily and are afraid that something might go wrong with the car.
Said 2019 Honda Pilot, maintained per Honda recommended maintenance schedule, experienced engine knock and internal damage at 100k miles. Investigation by Honda certified maintenance (dealership) identified a misfire diagnostic code for cylinder #2, and observed visible metallic debris in the engine oil indicative of bearing failure. Honda certified maintenance suggested internal engine damage and recommended engine/motor replacement. This is premature failure of 2019 Honda Pilot engine, presumably "not included" in the "affected VIN" population of Honda service bulletin #24-001.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and accelerating, the engine made clicking sounds. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the timing belt, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, who determined that the rod bearings had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
My car has shifted from both park to neutral and drive to neutral on its own three times in the last six weeks. This has occurred when parked and when at a red light. My gear shifters are electric push buttons. This has previously occurred, been reported to NHTSA, and been checked by the dealership. I was told by the dealership that it was a battery issue and paid to replace my three and a half year old battery that tested in good condition. My new battery is about a year old and I am now having the same, very serious issues. This specific model has been recalled multiple times for continuous electrical issues. I called the dealership after the first new incident and was told if they cannot repeat it, they cannot fix it. It is not occurring everyday or seemingly with any pattern so I cannot replicate it for the dealership. In the most recent incident that occurred at the red light, my car stalled and would not shift out of neutral. I had to turn off the car and restart it twice before I could shift into drive and avoid being hit. This also occurred in previous incidences that took place at red lights.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that the vehicle had previously been repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 23v751000 (engine and engine cooling); but the failure occurred after the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the vehicle had not yet been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
Stopped at a light and the auto start/stop system engaged and the cars engine turned off. Once the light turned green and took my foot off of the brake the engine did not automatically start. It would not start for about 30 seconds after trying to start it multiple time. The car was completely dead. Luckily the driver approaching me from behind was stopped without hitting me. This was very disturbing and dangerous.
Several times now when stopped at a red light, my vehicle's idle-stop features turns of the car and fails to restart when taking my foot off the brake. The screen behind the steering wheel says to take the vehicle out of neutral and restart but it is still in drive, the battery light also comes on. I have to put it in park (after putting on my hazards because there are cars behind me), turn off the vehicle and restart it. As far as I know there are no recalls for this as of yet.
On several occasions my 2019 Honda Pilot touring awd with idle start/stop will not restart when the idle start/stop kicks in. At a stop light several times when I come to a stop and the engine will turn off and not restart when the idle start/stop engages. Very dangerous and a clear safety issue that Honda needs to rectify ASAP. I have read many others with the same issue occurring. Honda, please step up and do the right thing!.
Auto start/stop. Car stopped and would not re-start while in an intersection. Restarted manually after a few minutes.
I was driving on the interstate when the entire dashboard of my 2019 Honda Pilot elite with 76,014 miles on it lit up with every light / warning possible. The vehicle began to sputter and stall. I was forced to pull off to the shoulder of a busy highway. I was able to slow sputter to the next exit while traveling on the shoulder to get myself off the busy highway. After getting 3 diagnostic testings completed… it was determined that the problem was within the engine. Specifically the cam shaft and cam shaft sensor. The sensor was scratched / scrapped due to “play” in the cam shaft. It was explained to me that this has been a common occurrence with Honda Pilots, particularly 2019. It cost a total of $3,657. 94 for the repairs with labor included. They provided me with the parts that were replaced because they felt that eventually a recall would be announced due to the problem being so wide spread.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. While at a stop light, the vehicle shut down. The check engine and emissions warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the family and other children had to exit the vehicle when the vehicle stalled at 30 pm on the busy highway. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where an unknown diagnosis was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v858000 (fuel system, gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.
A rod bearing in the engine failed and broke through the side of the engine block damaging the catalytic converter and causing oil to spray every where and the engine to seize and catch fire.
When vehicle comes to stop, auto stop/start feature turns off the vehicle when brake is pressed. When brake is released the engine does not start, the car goes into park or neutral and will not move until the vehicle is shut-off and restarted after a period of time. Time varies. Dealership is blaming after-market battery, stating vehicle auto idle stop/start feature requires Honda oem battery with specific voltage. Incident occurred in January 2024, reported at 50k mile service and again in June 2024. With both incidents there were no warning lamps, messages that appeared. Honda stated they could not recreate the issue then worked with master techs that stated it was a battery issue. Blaming it on our specific vehicle and did not inform us of investigation of thousands of claims with this specific issue. There has been an issue with multiple occurrences when auto stop/start is engaged when stopped at light then restarted the navigation system would go blank and error no audio connection or the apps will remain and the no audio connection error will be on top of screen and cannot turn on any of the apps such as radio, etc.
With the lane departure warning- it alerts when the lane turning and when my blinker is on to change lanes. It does not alert when I change lanes without my blinker lane keeping assistance does not do anything engine idle shut off- when I am at a stop light and the engine turns off while idle, when I take my foot off the break the engine completely cuts off and the screen prompts me to shift into park. I the. Have to completely turn off my car and turn it back on. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds sometimes it take a minute or two to turn back on. This has happened at stop lights as well as on the freeway during stop and go traffic.
Several times the engine automatically shut down when I stopped in traffic, but then failed to re-start. Takes several minutes of messing with it before it will allow me to restart it. Of course there was angry traffic behind me waiting. . . *there is already an ongoing nhsta investigation into this issue. Nhtsa action number: pe22005.
The fuel pump has been stalling and acting out since 2022 and received recall "NHTSA number: 23v-858 on February 2024. We call tampa Honda at 813-935-8585 to schedule a recall repair. Tampa Honda informed us that they don't have parts to replace the fuel pump. We then, 60 days after February 2024, received a second recall letter, "NHTSA recall number: 23v-858 today 18 may 2024 and called tampa Honda for the second time to schedule a recall repair of the fuel pump. For the second time, tampa Honda customer service told us that they don't have parts for the replacement. We informed them that the recall issue ( stalling and engine hesitation while driving )with our Honda Pilot 2019 is persistent and that we are concerned about the vehicle's safety.
1st occurence: 45000 miles on vehicle. I was exiting a busy ramp from I-75 to fort oglethorpe, GA and the idle stop caused the engine to stall and not re-engage upon lifting the break. I was almost hit from the rear. The vehicle had power but would not restart. I had to wait for it to shut itself down and get it to restart. 2nd occurence: 62000 miles on vehicle. Almost a year and a half from the first occurrence-I was on a very busy hwy 153 and came to stop at a redlight. Again, the idle stop caused the engine to stall and not restart. The light turned green, and I immediately turned my flashers on. I had a child in the backseat. Cars still began honking and going around us, leaving us to potentially get smashed from behind on a road that many people travel at 55mph plus! two nice people stopped and were going to try and push us out of the road. The vehicle would not remain in neutral and allow itself to be rolled. It automatically throws itself back into park. It eventually shut all the way down and was able to be restarted. I no longer feel safe driving my children in the vehicle as this is a huge safety concern for busy areas and intersections. This feature can be disengaged with a button but has to be done every time the car is re-started, this button can also easily be pushed at any time by accident and the feature would re-engage. Honda still has no remedy to permanently disengage this feature.
Rough idling and performance issues.
Auto start stop feature did not restart engine after I stopped in traffic ahead of me on jericho turnpike, NY in new hyde park. This has happened twice to me and a few times to my wife although she did not report them through this site. All this is after I had reported earlier the same incidents and Honda diagnosed it to the battery needing replacement after 2 years. There is a problem with this feature and NHTSA should act.
Auto idle doesn't always restart. Latest incident, I was stopped at a busy intersection. It failed to restart when I lifted my foot. Caused my car to become inoperable, pretty much every light came on, radio stopped. Had to put it in park, turn off the car, and restart it. There were cars coming close to hitting me.
Operating vehicle on interstate. After pulling onto off ramp engine shut off completely during application of brakes. This has happened twice in hot (above 90 degrees) conditions. Car restarted after multiple attempts. I was in danger of being rear ended. No warning lights, no I dictations there was a problem. Dealer cannot reproduce the problem, no solution offered.
Auto start-stop feature is malfunctioning. It is terrifying. I have pulled up to high traffic, busy intersections and my car will idle into stop at the light. When the light turns green and I proceed to push on the gas, the engine does now restart. I have been in extremely dangerous situations where I am stuck in the middle of very busy intersections with my young children in the car with me, and my car will not move. After about 10 minutes of attempting to restart, it will eventually turn back on and I can drive again. I cannot begin to tell you how terrified I have been a couple of the times this has happened, given the conditions of the traffic. I have tried to ask Honda about this several times and they act like they have no idea as to what I am referring to. They tell me there is nothing they can do because it cannot be replicated. I know that I am not the only one that has been affected by this, as I have done a ton of research online to try and find an answer. It seems to be a fairly common issue. I now worry every time I drive my car that it will happen. So far I have been lucky enough to avoid an accident each time this has happened. One occurrence was very close, as a car swerved at the last second before running right into me. It is utterly irresponsible of such a large automobile manufacturer to turn a blind eye to this issue. One of these days it could be catastrophic. It is my understanding that it is the responsibility of your organization to hold these manufacturer’s accountable. I really do hope that something is done about this before someone gets seriously hurt. Thank you.
Auto start stop did not restart engine after stopping at red light.
While stopped at a busy intersection the vehicle stalled and would not restart. Everything went blank. We believe it was the idle stop start feature malfunctioning. Lost all vehicle power including hazard lamps, speedometer, and gauges. Vehicle was previously in for recall on farka cables and idle stop start update. Honda dealer replaced battery 2 months prior.
I am experiencing two ongoing issues with my vehicle that have not been resolved despite recent recall repairs (fuel pump and hood striker). 1. Acceleration stutter issue when accelerating, the car shakes/stutters before finally picking up speed. I initially thought the fuel pump recall repair would fix this, but the problem persists. This affects vehicle performance and safety, especially when merging into traffic or crossing intersections. 2. Electrical / computer system malfunctions all advanced driver assistance systems (adas) malfunction and display error messages onscreen, preventing these systems from functioning. Since both issues persist and could pose safety risks, I am reporting this as a potential defect for further investigation. Since these issues are not detailed for my vehicle, but do seem to be occurring I other models, I don't think it's right for me to have to payout of pocket to fix it when other models with the same issue get covered.
Experiencing what I believe to be a low idle misfire around the 1200 to 2000 rpm’s. I don’t know whether this will lead to an engine failure at a crucial time in traffic. I have 50k miles and this has been reoccurring since 35k miles. Blogs has suggested that this is a common problem with this model.
My vehicle is equipped with a feature that turns it off at brakes stops and restarts when the gas is pushed (example - at a stop sign). Honda did a recall and replaced a part but this feature on my vehicle still stalls and doesn’t start instantaneously with the gas, causing a noticeable delay when I’m trying to go from a stoplight. Hondas remedy has been a button to turn this off - bit it must be turned off every single time the car is started and I’m afraid for my teenagers to take my 2019 Pilot because they may not remember the to do this. Honda at one point did turn this feature off on my vehicle but when I got a new battery put in, the computer reset and it is now active again. They informed me they now do not have the ability to turn off this feature due to a government legality over fuel efficiency so I feel very frustrated and disappointed.
