On my third transmission for this car, I have become scared to drive it. When making left turns my transmission will randomly choose when to engage in the correct gear. There have been many close accidents in this car and I am no longer able to make left turns. This happens on the freeway at times and I am unable to pull over at a safe speed because this models transmission is faulty. This is an issue with this model for quite some time and I feel cheated and un-safe in this vehicle.

My 1997 Honda Prelude automatic transmission died out. When I looked on the forums, Honda is very well aware of the failure by design of their Honda Preludes.

I've driving my Prelude for 4 years. Very soon after I got it I noticd the shifting was jerky. Soon after it became jumpy and now when I drivie my car from cold its bolting into gear with a tremendous jerk. I feel its on its way out.
Just like many other 97-01 Honda Preludes my car has begin to have problems shifting. If I do not allow my car to warm up it will rev really high and jerk into gear. The first time it happened I pulled out of my driveway and it revved really high. Had the driver behind me not swerved over they would have rear ended me.

When starting my 2001 Honda Prelude, putting into d4 (auto transmission) and beginning to drive, it would hit 3 rpm and not automatically shift. After hitting 3 rpm, it would rev up to 5 rpm before jerking into gear. This happens each time I first drive my car after it had been sitting, unless allowing it 10-15 minutes to completely warm up. If 2nd gear did happen to engage, it would have to rev and jerk into 3rd gear. I have taken it a few times to the auto shop although the transmission fluid levels remained fine and no other indication of a blown transmission was found.
The automatic sport shift transmission is starting to fail. The transmission is shifting hard (jolts) throughout all the gears. I was told by a mechanic that I need a new transmission. My car only has 65,000 miles on it and this is a premature malfunction of the transmission. This car is meticulously cared for, regularly maintained, oil changed regularly; transmission oil changed every third oil change to avoid transmission problems. The car is never raced or redlined. I also don't feel comfortable replacing a transmission that will fail once again as with many Prelude owners. The Honda Prelude costs about $25,000 and thus a $4,000 transmission job is 20% of the car. Just plain unreasonable!!! this has become a financially burdensome situation. Furthermore, Honda has recalled all 1997 Preludes in turkey and has replaced the transmissions with updated mh6a units. This is not an isolated case!!! please, your help in this matter is greatly needed. Thanks.
The transmission in my 1997 Honda Prelude automatic ss crapped out on me after kicking and slipping for a few months so I had it rebuilt. . . And now a few months later it's already slipping and kicking again. It cost 1500 to have it rebuilt the first time, Honda already addressed the 00-01 Prelude auto transmissions in a recall, why haven't the addressed the issues in the prior years? it's the same car as the 00-01, no changes were made to the body, engine, transmission, and yet they refuse to address this widespread issue among Prelude owners. I for one am tired of it, Honda owes it to their loyal consumers that they confront this issue head on.
The contact owns a 1998 Honda Prelude. The contact parked the vehicle in her driveway, removed the key from the ignition, and exited the vehicle. When she returned to enter the vehicle, it began to roll out of the driveway. The contact was dragged by the vehicle, but she was able to let go and roll on the pavement. The vehicle struck the mailbox and came to a stop when it struck a pole. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on January 30, 2006 for NHTSA campaign id number 05v025000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). The manufacturer wants the contact's insurance company to investigate the failure and notify their legal department with the results. The contact sustain injuries to her left and right side. A police report was filed. The powertrain and speed were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 115,320.
The automatic transmissions in 1997 Honda Preludes are weak and fail easy. The reason is cheap parts and metals in the transmissions themselves. The 97 Preludes were recalled in turkey, and replaced with a new m6ha unit. Mine is constantly slipping and tearing up. I'm looking at a constant problem that costs a lot of money. I bought this car for its quality and prestige in the Honda world, but due to the lack of quality and workmanship in the automatic transmissions, my opinion of Preludes has drastically dropped. I would not care if I had an automatic or a manual, I just want a car that works like the Honda company lacked to make it. Thank you.
I received a safety recall from the american Honda motor company stating that I needed to make an appointment at the authorized Honda dealer, due my from my car whatsoever transmission. 2 weeks later I was unable to remove my key from my car whatsoever reverse, or place my car in park so therefore I parked in neutral with the brake on my recall notice specifically stated that these exact problems would occur and would be repaired free of charge or reimbursed. And Honda dealer I followed instruction from recall letter and Honda dealer has failed to remedy the defect in my vehicle without charge and Honda automobile customer service has not been completely repaired but how can I completely repair it if they don't reimburse my money and keep making me pay for repairs of a recall .

Car is 1998, with only 35,255 miles. According to mechanic, transmission is bad. Need to replace transmission. Called Honda of America to see if goodwill will be made due to low mileage with transmission problem. Read in forums, seems like Preludes have had a history of transmission problems with the models of 1997 - 2002 years.
97 Honda Prelude.
I have a 1998 Honda Prelude with a automatic with the sport shift transmission. The one that comes with the base model Prelude. I was driving my car and I felt the transmission not pulling no more then the engine rev high and then I let my foot of the gas and the transmission slapped back into gear. I had the transmission rebuilt and it is starting to do it again. I took the car to Honda and they said there was nothing for them to do but put a new transmission in the car and it would be very costly and I have talk to people with the car and they have the same problems . So I would think there would be a recall because it is a very hazardous to the driver.
1998 Honda Prelude transmission problem. I just recently bought a 98 Honda Prelude. This is beautiful. I know the previous owner, and she was a good driver that never even utilized the vtec, meaning the rpm never went above 5000. Now I have it, and it has 63000 miles on it. This is my second car so I treat it with much care. But now suddenly, the gears don't shift right. Its an automatic and when the gears are shifting over it feels like a manual transmission with a worn out clutch, the engine revs up a bit and misses the next gear and sets in a late. If the car is floored, when the rpm hits 7000 the gear doesn't change! you have to let go of the accelerator and let it slide in to the next. This is terrible absolutely terrible. As far as I know there has been a recall on the 99-00 Preludes and I'm trying to get something done about my 98.
My automatic transmission on my Honda Prelude is beginning to fail after only 80000 miles. It will occassion jolt and cause erradic acceleration and deceleration while traversing the freeways. I beleive this to be a considerable hazard to me and have since stopped driving the vehicle.
The four speed automatic transmission in my 1997 Honda Prelude is defective. It shifts abruptly, slips, and has caused instances where my safety has been jeopardized. Research on the internet has revealed numerous problems with this transmission. A company such as Honda should recognize this as an inherent problem, and offer consumer assistance, such as they are doing with the 2000 through 2003 models ( 100,000 mile extended warranties). I am a young consumer, who once trusted Honda, and will not regain that trust unless they stand behind their "expensive" product. My car is currently at a local Honda dealer and they are quoting costs of from $1,000. 00 to $3,000. 00 to repair. The dealer has also stated that they are seeing numerous instances of failure with late model Honda automatic transmissions. I cannot afford a high car payment, and continue to pay high repair bills for a late model car. Honda motor company needs to address this problem, or possibly face a class action suit if inherent failures begin to cause severe accidents. Toyota has been asked/required to fix the oil problems with there 4 cylinder camrys, so why shouldn't Honda face up to and admit their inherent problems with their automatic transmissions.
While driving my car in regular drive it suddenly didn't pull no more and the engine just revved. I let my foot off the gas and then it went back into gear. The car continued to do this and then it started to upshift then suddenly downshift to the lower gear causing a very sudden jerk and change in speed. I took my car to Honda of cleveland in cleveland, TN. I told them what happened and they suggested to have a diagnostic test run. I agreed and the results were codes p700 and p730 internal failure and incorrect gear needs transmission overhaul or replacement. I was shocked when the service advisor told me this. I explained to him that I could not understand how this could have happened. I asked him if it could be a defective part. He answered no. I asked if it could be computer related and he said no that it was a failure inside the transmission. I asked him what failed. He couldn't tell me. He just told me what the diagnostic test came up with. The service quote for a remanufactured transmission installed was for $5365. 26 when I heard this quote I said "is this made out of gold". I told him the reason I bought a Honda was to avoid problems like this. I also had asked the service person if he had heard of other people with this type of car having this problem and he said he hadn't. After seeing this site and others I realized that there is a problem. I hope this complaint helps.
Faulty transmission in 1997 Honda Prelude ss automatic transmission.
Gear shifter is not working properly. Shifter becomes hard when driving to shift into place. Contacted dealer, and dealer was checking it out. Please provide further information.
At approximately 70 mph on the highway, the transmission suddenly downshifted from 4th (4 speed automatic sequential sport shift) to 2nd. Car lurched suddenly forward with no indication to traffic behind me that I was slowing down. If the person behind me had been any closer, I would have been rearended -- in this case it was a large tractor trailer truck.
When the vehicle is cold, the transmission experiences a delayed abrupt shift into reverse. When shifting from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 4th to 3rd, and 3rd to 2nd, the transmission shift abruptly (sometimes delayed) until the car warms up. This made turning onto busy roads difficult as I was never sure how long the shifts would take. Honda never identified the problem. Their only solution was a complete transmission replacement. Honda America provided the replacement transmission (goodwill assistance), but I was required to pay labor (~$380). The problem now appears to be fixed. Nlm.
Consumer states that when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear vehicle will skip, and motor will revv up to high rpm. When it finally shift vehicle will jerk forward, jerk is so severe that it may cause lost of control of vehicle. Dealer contacted, cannot fix problem. Mr.
My car suddenly started shifting oddly and got more violent as time passed. This was dangerous because after reversing out of my driveway, the car would jerk and basically have a big clang. The car also died out when I was driving. After I replaced the transmission at 80000 miles, it is now starting to shift hard again.
Transmission case is cracked and there was oil leaking from vehicle. Contacted mechanic. Honda corporate offered to replace transmission for free. Vehicle has never been in any front end collision.
Four-speed automatic transmission abruptly downshifted on its own causing the car to rapidly brake then accelerate with no driver control. At the time, I was told by Honda that they have never heard of this happening, the car was out of warranty, there were no replacement transmissions available for sale, and I would have to go to an independent transmission shop to have it rebuilt. The transmission shop showed me the friction surface on the clutches disintegrated, clogging the pump and filter which caused the eratic self-shifting. I was told this was faulty material used in the transmission. I now see in the los angeles times that there have been a number of problems with Honda and Acura automatic transmissions that the company has been trying to keep quiet.
Transmission went out with only 60,000. Dealership cannot give reason other than "sometimes they just fall apart". Dealership also stated that the transmission in the Preludes are designed to go over 200,000 miles. Had a diagnostic test done and result was converter collasped and destroyed transmission. "sometimes they just fall apart" is a very expensive answer for a car with only 60,000 miles.
Vehicle stalls, took to dlr and they said excessive amount of carbon was on valves. Dealer cleaned valves, and it was happening again. Consumer stated that 5th gear had to be replaced also.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
4th gear blew twice causing dangerous situations. The transmission has a defect, nobody knows what.

The problem with transmission fluid. . The dealer refuses to fix the problem, even though the original transmission never did this. Osha and the epa indicate that long term exposure to transmission fluid fumes are hazarous. I require your help in order to have the transmission repaired, as it is under waranty and Honda refuses to fix the problem. Driving the car is unsafe.
Can you please help us. The car has been to 2 different dealers and neither will tell us whats causing the problem. They dont know why. We just got car back and its still shifting strange. Car has no power for passing in low gear. This is getting dangerous to drive on the freeway because when the transmission goes out it has no power at all. Nevermind getting stuck on the freeway. Please feel free to call us if any further info is needed. Thanks jean delucia.
Problems with ball joints, brakes, air conditioner, radio, windshield and seats. In addition, the engine burned oil, the vehicle had a hard time going backwards. Consumer had numerous incidents with the vehicle going out control. The vehicle was repaired multiple times, but the problems continued to exist.
Transmission does not go into reverse some times. Yh.
While driving the vehicle transmission malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to stall. Also, while changing into 1 and 2 gears it will abruptly stop which almost caused an accident. Dealer replaced 5 transmissions. Dealer cannot determine problem. Cause unknown.
The key can be taken out of the ignition while the vehicle is not in park. The driver took the key out of the ignition while to vehicle was in drive and the vehicle continued to move forward.
