Honda Ridgeline owners have reported 21 problems related to rearview system braking (under the back over prevention category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Ridgeline based on all problems reported for the Ridgeline.
The infotainment system failed intermittently two times prior, causing failure of the backup camera and cross traffic warning sensor system. The entire system failed a month ago and Honda has no idea when they can get parts.

I attempted to have this recall address with no remediation. I went to the dealer 2 months ago and called Honda's recall line and was told that Honda is not equipped to repair the vehicle due to a parts shortage.

Scheduled my vehicle for recall related to the tailgate/camera/rear area warning system harness replacement for today 10-15-2024 after two notices. Upon arriving for my appointment, I learned that the dealer, voyles Honda marietta, GA does not have the parts, nor can they provide a time/date when parts would be available. Further, the service manager, marvin, said the same parts issue is present with a fuel pump and electric steering campaign currently released. From prior involvement with many heavy truck campaign recalls, I know the o. E. M. Is required to have adequate repair parts to satisfy the released safety recall. In the previously noted Honda recalls this requirement is ignored by the manufacturer placing safety concern on the public, stressing dealers, and forcing vehicle owners to operate defective vehicles because parts to repair are not available, nor is there an expected date when they will be. Responses like “on manufacturer back order “ is not acceptable for a released national safety recall. Honda corporate needs to be held accountable and owners need to be compensated for their inconvenience. Maybe restrict Honda from selling more vehicles until all safety campaigns are completed. Nhtsa, check your records on Honda’s completion performance and take appropriate actions.

Back up camera no longer works, all black when in reverse.
Rear view camera and rear traffic and warning systems stopped working. Honda diagnosed and repaired the wiring harness. Nhtsa has opened an investigation pe24004 which appears to identical to the issue we have.
My 2017 Honda Ridgeline's backup camera is not working. Screen its totally black. I can not see to the rear in the camera.

At odometer reading 35870, while loading the pickup for a trip home the backup camera failed. No local dealership was open on the weekend and we were 600 miles from home. Upon arrival, Monday, the local dealership was called and we were told the repair would not be covered by warranty and a similar recall on 2019 vehicles would not apply to 2020 model year for the same issue.
Rear view camera not working, exposed wires from lift gate operation. I can now see the exposed wires and some have been cut due to operation of lift gate over time.

Backup camera quit working. Found broken wires in wiring harness, by tailgate hinge. Wire routing is unacceptable, causing this break.
Rearview camera in tailgate stopped working due to a damaged wiring harness. The harness is routed in a manner which is sure to fail through normal tailgate operation.
Four months after warranty expiration, the back up camera began malfunctioning - either not working at all (black screen when in reverse) or camera image stuck on "fish eye". The wiring harness between body and tailgate is clearly frayed, with copper wires showing some as severed and some as lacking insulation. Worried about backing up into/over pedestrian or bicycle.

Wiring is clearly broken down on the left side inside the tailgate causing the backup camera to not work. Sounds like an incredibly common issue and I am being quoted $700 to have it fixed.
The failed system is the backup camera and the failure can be inspected. Our safety is compromised because we cannot see objects behind the vehicle before or during backing maneuvers. The damage has been reported and confirmed by the Honda dealer as well as an independent. There was no warning of the failure, one day it worked the next day it did not work.
Wire harness to backup camera is faulty causing camera screen failure to detect persons or objects.
The tailgate wiring harness is damaged by routine opening of the tailgate. This causes the wires to be severed, causing failure of the backup camera and other electrical systems in the tailgate. The wiring harness by design is not strong enough to handle the opening and closing of the tailgate. . Read more...
Wiring harness broke at tail gate hinge. Harness fails dues to flexing when tailgate is opened and closed. Rear camera fails to operate. Can no longer to objects or pedestrians when backing up. Did not see any object on the screen and almost back into a pedestrian in a parking lot.
The rear backup camera that is used every single day has gone completely black. The wire harness that runs from the truck to the tailgate have split due to opening and closing. This is a very common problem that is not the easiest to fix which costs the owners. This will happen to every single 2017-2019 Ridgeline. It is simply caused by opening and closing tailgate in the parked position.
The multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines has failed several times. It was reported to a local Honda dealership but because the camera was working at the time the vehicle was taken in to check this system, they didn't find a problem. The problem is when you put the vehicle in reverse, the camera would not work properly. The screen was gray but would have the yellow lines on the screen only. Later, the rear-view camera would work again. This system should not fail especially since it is a safety system for assistance in seeing what is at the rear of the vehicle before backing up.
1. Reverse camera not operating because of wire harness conductor breakage at tailgate hinge point. 2. Reduced vision and blind spots when backing up. If this isn't a safety concern, what is? system stopped working at 3-years, 40k miles. Dealer told me issue not covered under warranty, wanted $700 for a repair of Honda's inferior harness design. Aside from the poor flex loop design, the quality of the conductors are insufficient for use in a flex application. My opinion is based on 31 years of designing robot wire harness's in high flex applications. I spent four hours splicing the harness back together, all the conductors in the harness were broken. 3. I exchanged several emails with service manager; I'll dig them out of backup data storage if needed. Service manager told me the Honda people he talked too did not see it as a warranty safety issue; $700. Once again I have to ask, how can not having a complete view of the rear of the truck when in reverse not be a safety issue? the camera is a mandated safety item. 4. Failure began with a few days of intermittent operation before complete failure. I'll note that my truck tailgate gets very light use. The harness design is inferior by any engineering failure mood analysis. There are thousands of Ridgeline trucks on the road with this issue. 5. As I mentioned, I've made a temporary splice repair. I've managed to restore rear image although the screen quality is not what it should be. 6. I've owned Honda's for years and have had to deal with other issues Honda does not want to admit is their responsibility, and will secretly do extended coverage because they know it should be covered. Driving without the camera makes my wife and I very nervous. 7. In summary all owners of second generation Ridgeline's should be entitled to a replacement redesigned rear camera harness for safety reasons before a child, adult, or bike rider are killed or injured.
The rear view back up mirror stopped working it is intermittent. I believe the problem is a flaw where the wiring harness goes to the mirror near the hinge on the tailgate. Seems to be what was shown on some sites on the internet. Spoke to dealer he said he never heard of the problem kinda blew me off. Hope this government agency can get Honda to fix the problem. Thank you george bundschu.
