I want to go start my car just now to go to the store and when I turned it on and started it up the abs lights emergency brake light and eps light always lit up on my dashboard so I grabbed the manual to try to figure out what it is seen what each was individual thing standard for so I googled each individual and that's when I realized there's a recall for this from my vehicle for the abs malfunction.
The eps sensor trips when making a turn rendering the vehicle completely inoperable. I have to put the vehicle in park, shut it off, then turn it back on to continue moving. This is highly dangerous if it were to happen on the highway.

My car started to display an eps light on my dash board so I took it for service and was told there was a recall on the eps on my vehicle. I then took it to obrien Hyundai of fort myers and was told that the recall was in 2015 and that they will not be able to service my vehicle.
The epa light came on as I was driving on a city street and then the power steering went out as I turned left.
While driving at 55 mph on a local road, the steering suddenly seized and the electronic power steering (eps) warning light turned on. I took the vehicle to the dealer (williamsburg Hyundai 7277 richmond rd, williamsburg, va 23188) who re-calibrated the eps but was told my vehicle was not part of the recall campaign 127 due to manufacturing date of July 2007, which is before the recall coverage date of June 2008. This is not acceptable and should have been part of the recall campaign. Current mileage is around 66,000 miles.
Takata recall. My power steering has gone out and I did not recieve any form of information at the time the recall was sent out.
The steering isn't working.
I started my car at the top of my driveway and drove down the driveway toward the road as usual. No traffic was coming from either direction, so I accelerated slightly to make a right turn onto the road. As I was pulling onto the road, I completely lost the ability to steer the vehicle and to control the direction of it. Consequently, I almost went over a 10 to 12 foot high wall on the other side of the road. Fortunately, I was able to prevent going over the wall by braking, but I was paralyzed by shock and fright. A neighbor, who is a retired automobile mechanic came and restarted the car and got it back into my driveway. The car started without difficulty, but the redlight (eps) was showing on the dash. I called the Hyundai dealer where it was purchased, but they would not look at it until the following day. When they did, they say that they have "updated the ecu' and charged me $89. 95 for doing so. They claimed that the problem was due to a bad battery; however the battery has never failed to start the vehicle and run all devices. I drive alone, and need to drive at night very often; however I am now afraid to drive the car because I see online that there are many complaints to losing steering ability repeatedly after the "update" to the eps (or ecu). I called Hyundai, and the agent told me that my VIN was not on the recall list, which she said is now completed. On many of the online accounts of accidents and rollovers due to loss of steering ability, those vehicles vins were also not on the list of vehicles deemed to be affected; however they were having the exact same problems. My car had 47,792 miles at the time of the incident, had no steering recall, and was manufactured June 9, 2008. I am the original owner. Clearly, this vehicle should have also been on the recall list because the problems are identical to those recalled under #127 recall.
My daughter was driving on a highway (55 mph limit) and slowed down to approx. 10 mph due to a traffic jam when all of a sudden the eps light came on and she lost her steering. At that speed, it was almost impossible for her to steer. She managed to pull the car over to the shoulder and called me for help. I researched her situation and learned that there is a recall for all 2008 Elantras and later to fix the eps. The date of manufacture had to be after 1 June 2008. Unfortunately, her car was built in Aug 2007. That being said, perhaps the current eps recall should be expanded to include 2008 models manufactured before June 2008? I called for a tow truck as it would be extremely dangerous (and pretty much impossible) for her to drive any further. While waiting for the tow, I researched the eps situation online and learned from a blog that turning off the engine and restarting it sometimes resets the eps. She did so and it "fixed" her steering. I'm certain this is a temporary fix only and will not prevent a future reoccurrence of this potentially dangerous situation.

No damage, but I need to report the Hyundai practice. While I was on a highway, eps lamp came on and steering became really tough. Once I pulled over and re-started the car, the lamp went off and I could steer without any problems. I found out that my car was actually recalled for the eps system, so brought my car to a dealer. The dealer told me that the campaign is 'closed', they need to charge me to diagnose the problem. . . . . 'wait, I just need to get whatever you fixed for the recall notice?' no, the campaign is closed so we need to diagnose the system, and if nothing is wrong, we cannot do anything. Is this practice correct? they said they found additional issues with the steering sensors but it's included in the diagnostics package. . . .
I was driving on a freeway when my eps light came on and when I began to exit my car did not want to steer. I took my foot off the gas and strongly steered right. At the stop sign I took both hands on the steering wheel and made a left turn. Every turn home was difficult. They power steering was not working. It was almost impossible to steer the car. I called the dealership and I started the car and it steered fine. I went to the dealer and they put it on the diag. Checck and they say it is c1290 steering torque sensor. At 74,000 miles you cant steer your car? you gotta be kidding me. They say it is not warranted but $2310. 00 please will repair the problem. Its not a recall item like campaign 127 because its a different part. ?????.
The contact owned a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 15 mph going around a bend, the steering ability seized. The contact crashed into a parked vehicle, rolled back, and struck another parked vehicle. The air bags did not deploy and the contact's head struck the windshield. The brakes also failed to respond. A police report was filed. The following day, the contact went to the hospital due to a severe headache and fever. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot by the police, towed to an independent mechanic, and then towed to the contact's residence. After the manufacturer was notified, the vehicle was towed by a third party investigator to their facilities. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
My vehicle was turning a corner and the power steering assist shut down totally, I was unable to steer my vehicle. The eps light lite up on the dashboard. It took two people, my boyfriend and myself to steer the vehicle to the curb, but only with a great deal of effort on both of our parts.
I was making a right turn onto the street I live on, thankfully I was going pretty slow, as I was turning when all of a sudden my steering wheel locked up and I was unable to steer my vehicle. Thankfully I was the only one on the road otherwise id have hit an oncoming car as I wasn't able to maneuver my car, regardless of how hard I tried to turn the steering wheel. The eps was lite up on my dashboard when I was able to stop and look at the dashboard. I had the car towed to the dealer, who told me my car was manufactured one month earlier than the current recall #127 and I would be responsible for the repair and tow. I was not willing to drive my vehicle again until this issue was fixed, had this occurred on the freeway I wouldn't be here to issue this complaint rather I would be dead or severely injured hospitalized for who knows how long if I had managed to live once the vehicle crashed.
I was driving for about 15 minutes at a speed of under 30 mph in heavy traffic when my power steering suddenly locked and could not be engaged. The eps light on my dash went on and I was able to get the car home as I was only about 1 mile from home. The Hyundai dealer I called to pick up the car said it was my fault because I missed a recall. I have checked over the Elantra 2008 recalls and none of them say anything about steering. Can you tell me if the car will ever be safe to drive again after the dealer repairs it and does it really have anything to do with one of the hyandai recalls.
Driving car approximately 2 minutes after turning it on when the red eps light turned on and the power steering went out. Could barely move the steering wheel, as the wheel appeared to lock. This also happened about 1 year ago, exact circumstances. When I turned it off and then on again, it went away. Thankfully, I was in a parking lot when this occurred each time. Keep vehicle in good service condition - regular flushes, fluids maintained at appropriate levels, oil changes, brakes and tires replaced as needed. Did have the brake light sensor replaced - once due to recall, and again when the one provided by the recall failed, causing the brake lights to stay on, which in turn drained my battery - had to replace the battery as a result as well at my own expense.
I turned on the engine just like any other normal morning and it appeared that the wheel was stuck. I turned hard to the left and heard a cracking noise. I further turned the wheel left to merge onto the street, when I realized I had no steering. I proceeded to try and drive and the vehicle stalled and would not let me drive forward. With great effort, I was able to get it back in to park and park it on the curb. I was lucky no one was around, as the stalling and inability to steer was a scary incidence. This issue needs to be a recall as it is very risky to drive the vehicle if you can get it to turn at all . . . . So far it will only let me drive in reverse and make right hand turns.
This past Saturday, may 10, 2014 I was driving my four year old daughter home from soccer class and all of a sudden my steering went out. After avoiding an accident with woman behind me, I realize that the steering wasn’t out but had become very difficult. The eps light on the dash was on and I learned that the power steering had gone. We took the car to our local mechanic to see if it was a simple thing like a fluid change. He informs us that the steering is computerized, that there is a service bulletin about the power steering in our car and we should take it to our dealer and it shouldn’t cost anything to reprogram.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 60 mph, the electronic power steering indicator illuminated and the vehicle became difficult to steer. The failure occurred four times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The eps light came on and the power steering was gone.
Steering wheel locked while driving 40 mph on road. Almost wrecked.
My 2008 Hyundai Elantra with 19,000 miles on it suddenly lost power as I was crossing a railroad track. (10/2010) I immediately tried to start it again and it did start but as I drove on, the engine seemed to "miss" then keep going, then "miss" again. It did this for about 2 blocks when I stopped at a gas station. I called the dealership and they towed it. They called to say that they thought it was a "steering" problem and the brake automatically engaged. I got another call several days later saying the car was ready to pick up. This was followed a few hours later by another call saying they had test driven the car and it failed. They said they were in touch with the regional office for help. I called their consumer affairs dept. And was told that the service dept. Had failed to perform one of several tests required to determine the problem. They were to call me within 1-3 days. It is day 2 now and I haven't heard anything. I do not trust Hyundai and want to get rid of the car. I have been assigned a "consumer rep" who will now be the only person I will be allowed to talk to regarding the car. If the engine shut-down had occurred on a major highway or in heavy traffic through which I was about to go, it could have caused a serious accident. I am not willing to drive a car that is dangerous. Can I believe Hyundai when/if they tell me my car has been fixed????? I doubt it!.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the brakes and steering locked abnormally. The contact shifted into reverse and the vehicle went forward instead. She shifted into park and turned the vehicle off. When restarted, the failure recurred and the vehicle became nonresponsive. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who reset the computer but could not confirm that the failure would recur. The failure recurred twice and the vehicle was not taken back to the dealer for further diagnosis or repairs. The manufacturer was not notified. The current mileage was approximately 11,500 and the failure mileage was approximately 7,000.
While driving the car the steering locked rendering the car unsteerable, resulting in a head on collision.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. While driving 55 mph, the steering began to vibrate which made it difficult to control the vehicle. As a result, the contact crashed into the front driver side of another vehicle. As of may 30, 2008, the dealer had not inspected or repaired the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 104.
While driving on I-95 north in maryland, a motorist cut me off suddenly, when I applied the brakes to slow down, the brakes locked and car swerved to the right, crossed all lanes, and rolled over twice. The air bags did not deploy on driver or passenger side. As a result, I received a fractured sternum.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 80 mph, the front driver side tire would wobble excessively. She took her vehicle to the dealer and the tire was replaced. Two weeks later, the failure recurred and a crash nearly occurred. The dealer has not provided any assistance. The contact has not filed a formal complaint with the manufacturer. . The failure mileage was 800 and current mileage is 2,000. The consumer stated when she applied the brakes it felt strange. The consumer stated there was a burning type smell coming from the vehicle, but the dealer told her it would go away. The consumer stated it has been a month and the smell was still present. Updated.
