1 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2025

After the recall at Hyundai, my car wouldn't run and there were many lights on the dashboard. It was later checked and the instability light problem persisted. They fixed on the same time, and say something problem with the update. They later informed me that I have a problem with the brake switch, and the brake lights don't work because of it. I replaced and doesn’t work, I went back to the store and they want me to pay a fee to have it analyzed again. Even though before the recall, the lights and the car were working perfectly.

Blinkers hyper flash with head lights off, get stuck on one direction. Dont work when head lights are on. This is a huge problem with this car and it is known but nothing has ever been done.

4 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2023

The vehicle brake lamps, both left/right and center continually burn out. The bulbs burn out every few months. The tail lamps remain lit, but the stop lamps burn out regularly. There seems to be a recurring problems with this make and model. Hyundai must be aware as this safety issue presents a crash hazards. Non functioning brake lamps.

5 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2022

I have had multiple headlights, turn lights and brake lights burn out - started less than a year of car ownership; with at least one outage every 2-3 months - both driver and passenger, and rear lights. Not just bulb replacements, I’ve had expensive replacements for harnesses on both sides too, but issue keeps returning. Currently driver brake light went out, can’t see a Hyundai mechanic for another month due to they and surrounding Hyundai dealers are fully booked. The car is faulty. I am the original owner.

6 Exterior Lighting problem

Good.

7 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2021

I am having trouble with the exterior lights on my vehicle. That includes brake lights, tail lights, head lights, turn signals (front and rear). I am constantly replacing them as one or several are always out. My safety and/or the safety of others are put at risk because of no brake lights, someone may rear end me, or having difficulty seeing in front of me at night when head lights fail. I've taken my vehicle to several different locations to have my bulbs changed, and I've also changed a few myself. There is no way to know when a brake light is out, unless I'm getting an oil change, as I did today, and had to pay to have two more bulbs replaced, and thankfully he was kind enough to charge the 3rd at no cost. I've also been pulled over to let me know my bulbs weren't working, or having random people in traffic let me know.

8 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2021

Driver side airbag dash light goes on and off (mostly on). No accident or previous deployment of the airbag. Also, while under warranty the tail light and break light wiring was replaced as they would burn out approx. Every 6 months. One light after another: tail light, break light, blinker, etc. It's happening again. . . Seems to be a wiring or component issue. Have to keep bulbs in the car with me at all times.

9 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2020

When attempting to change the license plate bulbs it was noticed that the license plate bulb housing, as well as the outer tail lamp housings, showed evidence of the internal plastics melting. It appears that the heat from the lamps was enough to cause the housings and internal lense plastics to heat beyond the glass transition temperature of the plastics utilized by Hyundai. Both outer tail lamp housings and license plate bulb houses were replaced due to the damaged. The original bulbs were all checked to ensure they were correct per the vehicle manual, which they were.

10 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2019

Takata recall I have recently had my airbag light come on on my car. I have waited a month or two and the light will not go off. I have done numerous amounts of research and found out that this is an extremely popular malfunction with Hyundai sonatas and Hyundai Elantras from the year of 2012. The problem happened right after I rolled over my 100,000 mile warranty so it was covered no longer. This is a safety concern to many people as this is a very popular car. I've had diagnostics done on my car and told it was the clock spring that has malfunctioned. Reviews also have the same malfunction.

11 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2018

Randomly last week, the red airbag light appeared on my dash. The light would go off and on about every 5-10 minutes, while driving and stationary. Some days, the length of time it was off would extend longer than other. Over the last two days, the light has remained on consistently. I read similar issues online from other 2013 Hyundai Elantra owners who stated that the driver airbag will not deploy if this light is on in the event of a collision. Yet, I found no recalls online. I have not had any prior issues with false warning lights and the car has not been in any type of accident in over 4 years. There is no way for me to maintain these safety features in my car so I will not pay hundreds of dollars to fix an issue that was not caused due lack of owner diligence. However, I need to ensure my car will deploy any safety functions in the event of an accident when triggered.

13 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2017

I have been having electrical issues for about 1 1/2 years. The radio turns off when breaking and signaling. Not every time but about 2/3 of the time. Occasionally the dash will go out. The interior lights flicker (all the time) as well as the head lights. Not sure about the back lights because I can't see them but I assume. The temperature gauge does not light up sometimes. No bars are displayed. The trip computer resets at least 4 times a week. The avg mpg, mph, trip a and b will start over at 0. 0. Turning left makes the car shutter and turn off in mid traffic or when in a drive thru. The steering wheel locks up/stiff steering. The eps light comes on. Have to turn car off and back on to alleviate the issue. While the car is idling with the air conditioner on the car will cycle and just about turn off.

14 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2017

Our cruise control (cc) switches on the steering have stopped working! the behavior was un-predicable and dangerous for while when hitting cancel button would "engage" the cc. This is a serious safety issue since it could cause accidents. I believe this is due to the poor design on the connector that connects the wires from the cc switches to the steering case. The connector is placed right under the horn cover and we believe the connector gets squeezed every time the horn is used. I tested this myself and was able to get the cc to work after lifting the horn covers forward section which reduced the pressure from the connector right underneath it ! when I did this, hitting the cc. Once again this is a serious safety issue cause drivers could assume they are disabling the cc, when they could actually be activating cc which will cause accidents.

15 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

Engine failure. Zero compression cylinder #1. Second time this has happened since purchase on 10/18/2016. Also, tire pressure problem, esc light comes on, dashboard gauges inoperative. Fuel mileage below what is advertised. Neither hundai nor enterprise will fix the problem after repeated demands. Also, there is a recall regarding "stopper pad" and stop lamp switch. Bought vehicle, cash, from enterprise car sales in montclair, CA. It was a "certified" used car, supposedly. Immediately I noticed that the engine sounded "tinny". Sounded like a sewing machine, it was knocking. Also, when I lifted the oil stick, smoke came out of engine. This was within 2 weeks after purchase. The car completely lost compression on interstate 10 in April, 2015. I told both Hyundai and enterprise who ignored my complaints. Finally, after several complaints and threats, enterprise took the car in and sent it to Hyundai dealership who claimed there was no problem. The car began losing power again in September, 2016 and finally stopped in the middle of the street in arcadia, CA. No compression. It had to be towed to my house. I took it to private shop who said "zero compression in cylinder #1, possible burned out valve '. See attached. Called hyindai and enterprise again. Both denied responsibility, and refused to do anything. I have to now pay over $1,000 to get engine rebuilt. This car is a lemon and I am enttied to refund or a new car.

16 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2016

Parking lights won't turn off, car won't start within minutes/seconds later, had 7 roadside assistance to jump start me in two months, plus others from security guards, etc. My car is on recall for these problems, just my VIN number isn't, the Hyundai-it dies within seconds. It happens when I am waiting in my car, no engine on, when I run the radio engine off, always after the engine is off, with or without radio playing or everything is shut off, it happens--my parking lights stay on unless I get out of the car, open the door, and lock it imediately if I take a few steps and come back to lock it, it's already dead, has left me at work, school, in middle of the night, everywhere, anywhere, engine cuts of and on when taking off or making a slow curve, car dies while parked dealership said they could approve my issues to be fixed because no recall on my VIN # but I have no car half the time engine cuts off and on while driving, brakes grind strange noise.

18 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

There are no true daytime running lights as advertised since one has to turn on all the other running lights (amber for front, red in rear) in order for the low beam "drls" to function. This is illegal to do in some states and drivers have been stopped, warned, and even ticketed for this. This is both a serious safety issue, as well as gross misadvertising.

19 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2014

My wife was driving the car. It was a dark road in the night. Perhaps she didn't see the stop sign and cash into a vehicle coming from right hand side, going in the same direction my wife was going. My wife crashed the other vehicle from behind. It was serious crash in which the entire front portion of the car is damaged. But the air bags did not come out. My wife had her head hit the steering wheel and had a an injury. My complaint is "why did the air bag not inflate in such a serious crash?" . . Updated 10/06/14 .

20 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

This car is equipped with daytime running lights, but there is no way to turn them on without also turning on the parking lights. When the daytime running lights and parking lights are illuminated, the taillights are on and the instrument cluster is dimmed so that it is difficult to read. This creates an unsafe and in some states (California and others) illegal situation if the daytime running lights are turned on.

24 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2013

Car claims it has daytime running lights, yet it really doesn't. You have to turn on the parking lights for the drl to actually come on. So then you have the parking lights on front, rear taillights as well as the drl. This is a safety issue, I believe some states have laws against running parking lights on clear days? other cars I have own, the drl comes on automatically when driving. Called Hyundai and dealership, got the brush off as that is just the way it is. Actually after some research I found that a software change made in mid 2012 is what did this issue. Should be a recall! it is also a mis-leading sales, what next, must roll window down for the a/c to come on?.

25 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2012

Car is advertised as having day time running lights, but the drl only turns on with the parking lights. Dealer and Hyundai both state this is normal for the car. This not how any other car I have driven is like. Using parking lights during the day is illegal in many states.

26 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2012

I got this car a few days ago. The window sticker claims it has daytime running lights. The lighting stock has three options. The options are "drl off, daytime lights, and night time lights. " when daytime lights are activated, it activates the daytime running lights, but also activates rear lights and dims interior gauge lights to "night lighting" levels. This poses several safety risks. Firstly, people may struggle to read interior gauges when driving during the day, increasing the risk of a collision. Secondly, the activated rear lights adds confusion during the day and could increase the risk of other motorists crashing into the rear.

27 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

The daytime running light drl system on this car is flawed. A proper drl system requires no user action to activate and only illuminates the lower beam lights. On my 2013 Elantra, you have to turn the lighting stalk to the parking lamp position in order to activate them and when you do, the low beams and all 4 parking lamps illuminate. This is not how it is supposed to work. Also my battery ran down unexpectedly and the tow driver said it strains the battery when you leave the stalk in an "on" position.
