Component or system that failed or malfunctioned: engine or other I was driving my 2016 Hyundai Elantra in kissimmee, FL, 34746 when the engine suddenly lost power and the car stalled out. The rpms dropped to 0, and the car could not be restarted. I was able to coast to the side of the road, but I was nearly hit by oncoming traffic. After several minutes on the side of the road, I was able to restart the vehicle to arrive safely home. The vehicle also shuts off at stop lights, drive-through, or idle. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? the loss of power while driving could have caused a serious accident. If I had been in the middle of the road or if there had been more traffic, I could have been hit by another vehicle. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no, I have not yet taken the car to a dealer or independent service center. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no, the vehicle or component has not been inspected by anyone other than myself. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, there were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The check engine light seems to come and go. I am requesting that the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) investigate this safety problem. I am also requesting that Hyundai motor America recall all 2016 Hyundai Elantras that may be affected by this problem. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

My engine will not turn over 70% of the time. My radio switches on and off on its on and changes stations randomly. Even with new brakes, it sounds like they are constantly grinding. When my gas gets low the issue gets worse to the point I can't arm my car. I have a small child and my car started smoking. I was also stranded for almost an hour because my car would not start. I just got off the phone with pearson Hyundai and they told me there is no remedy for this issue and just wait. This issue started mid last year when my engine started to shake at a stop light. I have had 3 mechanics look at my car and they won't touch the issue due to the recall.

When I try to accelerate its like it isn't getting gas or there's something preventing it from going. Once it stops struggling it takes off all at once. When it struggles you can feel the vehicle hesitate. It has less than 5000 miles on it. There shouldn't be a single problem with jt n?.

The h e v warning light comes on when driving. The hybrid battery disconnects from the engine and the car is undriveable. Have to pull over, stop the car, turn off the car and then reset the hybrid battery. This has happened twice in last week. Thank fully I was able to pull over safely, but this a dangerous situation for me and other cars around me. The car had been taken to the dealership just two weeks ago and they were unable to diagnose the issue.

The car was driven by my family. They narrowly missed a collision with another automobile. The breaks went out. The car was taken to a repair garage and, upon inspection, found the break line was rusted completely into allowing the break fluid to escape. I had the car towed to a Hyundai dealer in clearwater florida and got the same report. Hyundai has a service recall for underbody corrosion and has recalled nearly 300,000 vehicles in canada to replace this problem. But now Hyundai is telling me this isn’t covered by them. This is a server safety problem with no brakes and a possible gas line explosion. I would like this problem correct before possible lives are destroyed. When I come to a stop the car randomly shuts off. All the warning lights come on. I have to put it in neutral and it usually starts right back up. It's happening a lot more often now.

Brake and fuel lines corroded due to failure of manufacture to coat lines completely. Lost brakes completely without warning. Confirmed by hoffman and burnham auto services. Also contacted garvey Hyundai who stayed this is a problem with these vehicles. Contacted Hyundai customer service as there is a recall issued in canada for this problem. Hyundai stated no foreseeable recall in the u. S. Lost of brakes could be deathly, not to mention high risk of fire and death if fuel lines corroded thru.

Since buying my vehicle new, it has had three ignition coils fail at different times. The car begins to shudder, rough idle, not accelerate and all of a sudden just will not respond to giving it gas. This happens at any speed therefore it is a danger especially entering or exiting highways or switching lanes. It has been unpredictable. The check engine light does come on some of the time as this problem is occurring, not before. The dealer replaced the first two coils (51, 576 miles and 56, 446 miles) under the warranty. The third coil replaced (78, 391 miles), they would not cover under warranty, nor would they replace the 4th coil as a precaution.

While driving over the last month, the car shuts off with no warning. There are no check engine or other lights that come on once it shuts down. There does not appear to be any consistency in the occurences, sometimes while idling, sometimes while driving 40 mph. Up until recently, the car would restart once I put it in neutral, but it now does not restart right away.

Bought the car a yr ago and transmission started slipping and stalling sometimes even engine shutting off while driving at higher speeds unable to steer and when pulling into traffic is on interstate almost got hit because I could not speed up it's also using double the fuel while driving longer distances I tried to use my warranty 2x before my warranty was up but both neither time did Hyundai in owensboro check what I booked the appt for. First one was booked to check transmission and power issue then called the day before and added oil change. When I arrived the tech retyped my order and changed the oil. Brought my keys I asked about the power/transmission issues and was told they didn't know to check that but at that point there was no time and had to reschedule. . . So I did. Waited almost 2 months booked appt for transmission / power issue and also check the fuel usage. Finish the service call quoting me over $1300 to fix the fuel issue because no one could find my warranty eventhough I had my original paperwork showing who warranty was with and also the acct number for the warranty. When I asked about transmission or power issue I was told there was no one to check that and I had to rebook but this time it was going to be 8 weeks and by then my warranty had expired. I feel like Hyundai did this on purpose because they are in cahoots with the lot I bought the car from. Now my car is getting worse and worse and scared to even drive the car im overpaying for. This was my first Hyundai and more than likely will forever be my last because the car I got was a lemon it seems, the customer service was worthless and the service even worse. I'm reporting to bbb and everywhere I can.

I was driving the vehicle normally down the highway. When I exited the highway, I came to a stop light and made a complete stop at which point the engine stalled. I restarted the vehicle, the check engine light appeared, but I couldn’t get it to register any rpms and I was left stranded in a busy intersection until help arrived.

There's a piston slap ,the engine block is damaged to the risk pin bushing ,connecting rods needs replacing the piston slap noise is in the upper end of the engine ,the gas tank want hold gas.

The oil light is blinking and car repeatedly shuts off while driving mostly when going 25-45mph. When it shuts off I have to turn it off take the key out and turn it back on until the next time it happens. This usually occurs within an 20 minutes of driving. My safety was at risk because of other cars behind me going speed limit while car automatically shuts off. Car was bought on carvana no local dealer but have taken it to multiple shops and they are shocked to hear of no recall. The car has not been inspected by police insurance but local mechanic shops. Oil light blinks while driving constantly from start to finish while car shuts off steady oil engine and battery light on.

This vehicle has been having engine problems since January 2 023 the engine light is on the car stops running completely while driving. A great danger to me. I have taken it 5 times to the service center at dealer in rick case in plantation they have kept it for several weeks the last was returned to me on March 23. 2023 I was told it was fixed on April 22 2023 the engine light went back on the same problem the car keeps stopping I took it in, they did not even look at it. I was told that until June 14 they will not see or diagnose it. I have contacted consumer affairs with no resolution. I wish to file a lemon law on this dealer since obviously it is defective beyond repair. Please advise as how to take this action. I need a new reliable car. Thank you.

Car started to shut down with no warning about a month ago. Took it to neighborhood garage and they couldn't figure it out . They called a Hyundai service department and they said they have seen the problem and it is a cr-sensor. They (Hyundai service dept) sent the part to my garage and they made the repair. Car worked fine until a few days ago when it shut down again with no warning. This can be a serious safety issue if driving on a highway at highway speeds when it shuts down. However it does start up right after the engine stops .

I’ve been having problems with my timing chain and power train for over a year. Got the timing chain fixed and now all I’m seeing is new problems with bad ignition coils and spark plugs and transmission problems. I’ve only had this car for 4 years and keep the maintenance up to date.

Check engine light came on due to a leak in the vehicle emission system. The car repeatedly stalled and shut off when the car stopped at lights. The tachometer also failed to register while driving and difficulty accelerating worsened. During inspection of the car a leak of fumes was noted coming from the evaporator canister and once it was removed, a bent and broken connector was noted.

The car has issues with starting, and accelerating. Dealerships have zero availability for weeks out to provide any sort of diagnostics, and are unable to assist with this issue. The following email was sent to Hyundai customer service: I am currently leasing a 2020 Hyundai Elantra.   in July of this year, the car suddenly had trouble accelerating.   being due for an oil change, and wanting to get the engine codes read, I contacted my local Hyundai dealership, and they had no availability for weeks.   I used a local service station to have the codes read/get the oil change, and the car continued to have difficulty (I am attaching the bluelink reports on said codes).   I was finally able to bring it in to the local dealer who cleared the codes, and said they were the result of "not having enough oil. "  the car drove well until 11/27, when the car started to sputter, not allowing it to accelerate properly, and with multiple error messages, including a flashing engine light.   after contact my local dealer who I first used in July, they said "it is probably low oil like last time, these cars are known to burn oil quickly. "  I again brought it to my local service station for the oil change, and for a nys inspection.   as my car is under 15k miles, and up-to-date with oil changes, I would imagine it would pass said inspection.   it did not.  .

Please find below a description of the malfunction in my Hyundai Elantra, as this is the reason I'm requesting inclusion in a recall. Since the week of thanksgiving 2022, I've had several instances of my vehicle stalling without warning before engaging the transmission; for example, my car once stopped moving completely on the freeway while entering the onramp at 55 mph. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse, stalling up to seven or nine times per week. Because of the severity of this issue, I’ve had it inspected multiple times and would gladly submit it to another one if requested. Obviously, a defect of this magnitude with no obvious cause not only puts me at risk as the driver, as I can’t prepare for a sudden stop, but all road travelers around me are also subject to this issue. As you know, a sudden halt could lead to collusion involving numerous people. To date, an independent service provider has not been able to identify the issue or recreate the problem, as it occurs randomly with no warning lights or signals to prepare me for what’s about to happen. My car tends to shut off on its own while driving. I’ve fixed the fuel pump thinking that can be the issue due to the car passing “green” on the machine stating everything is good. No lights on my dashboard, engine tends to shake. Rpm arrow is all over the place. The car is well taken care of. I’m spending a lot of money on mechanics fixing things that clearly aren’t the issue with the vehicle.

Financed last year (2021) at 38,000 miles, financing a vehicle I wish I knew to do research before hestitly excepting my first offer, first waring was on the test drive. The car had to be towed back to dealership because the battery was dead. In the sub-zero cold, the battery with read low and this causes electrical issues, from remote start not working to unable to open the doors. The more common and reaccuring issue that is getting worst is the lack of excellaration when taking off. Realizing this drastic difference recently, I know there is some thing happening, but I have not had much good customer service when I have brought issues to dealership and services center. Also issues with harness for the back left lights. The harness that holds the bulb keeps burning out. Dealer has never fixed when I immediately experience this issue and they just replaced the bulb twice until they realized the real problem and told me it would cost me $160.

I was driving down a main highway, approaching a busy intersection preparing to turn left. . . I had a green light without a green arrow and had quite a bit of distance/time between myself and any approaching vehicle so I went ahead and proceeded. Just as I entered the intersection, all of the sudden my car stopped responding to my pressing on the gas pedal. The motor was very loud and dry sounding, and the rpm gauge was running abnormally high but the car itself, was barely moving. I continued trying to give it gas, even checked to see if something had knocked it out of gear (that was not the case)! cross-traffic began to approach the intersection so I really started to work on the gas pedal, pumping it and when that failed, I mashed the gas all the way to the floor and finally just before I was about to be hit the car down the pedal and finally the car began to move!! it has been doing some hesitating for a while now but it barely made it out of the intersection this time and that was terrifying!! I have it in the shop now waiting to see what the problem is but this needs reporting. I do everything I'm supposed to with maintaining my car. . . Oil changes, spark plugs, fluid checks and it has less than 50,000 miles so that shouldn't have happened!.

Car accelerated/surged when foot released from the gas pedal. Happened three separate instances. Last instance smashed into wall and damaged front bumper. Car so scary to drive we towed it to dealer. Replaced throttle sensor for $400. Related to ntsa oid 11439675.

The vehicle developed a fuel line leak (diagnosed by ase certified technician). The problem was first noticed when the odor of fuel filled the cabin. This may or may not be similar to the same issue arising in 2013 sonata models for which a recall was issued. I have tried to locate a replacement part (Hyundai part# 31310-3x400) but am informed that these are on "indefinite backorder" or "discontinued" rendering the otherwise serviceable vehicle unsafe to operate.

I am the owner of a 2017 Hyundai Elantra. I bought the car for my daughter for transportation to and from school and work. As her boyfriend was driving on a 3-lane highway in heavy traffic, the car would no longer accelerate, and the steering wheel locked. The engine just stopped and seized up. The car lost all power and steering capability. He rolled the car into the left-hand turn lane. A police officer pulled up about 30 seconds later, said that he was obstructing traffic, and to move the car out of the turn lane. Her boyfriend had to push the car across the median, and 3 lanes of traffic, to get to the opposite side of the highway's shoulder, by himself. When he nearly had the car off of the road, on the opposite side of the highway, a pedestrian approached and helped him finish pushing it out of the road. This could have caused a major car accident, or someone could've been killed or injured while pushing the car. I have moved one hour away from my daughter, so I cannot provide her with a ride to and from school and work. She and I are stuck paying $301. 18/mo on a car that is inoperable; it's just sitting and rotting at her apartment complex. We are also stuck paying $135. 87/mo for her car insurance on a car that is inoperable. Also, this model year, 2017, has a problem with peeling paint too. The car has missing paint patches all over. Previously, at just 51,000 miles, the car had stalling problems. The car would just shut off while driving. It was repaired at Hyundai. When we got it back, it was still doing the same thing, and had to go back in again for service at Hyundai. I filed a formal complaint with Hyundai consumer affairs. Hyundai should have already issued recalls for these problems that many people are experiencing. I've been doing research and have found that this year and model Hyundai is very problematic. They are refusing to take responsibility by not issuing recalls on these recurrent problems that they're aware of.

This is a very unsafe vehicle. There should be a recall!!!! this is a well known problem, yet huyndai and nthsa does nothing. How many people will be involved in an accident or killed before you do something? this vehicle has been having check engine light come on multiple times in past month. When it does the whole car shudders/shakes , and won't accelerate. There is also a knocking. This is an accident waiting to happen! first time I took it in was to a firestone shop as huyndai had no opening for weeks. I drive 60 miles 1 way for my job, so couldn't wait for huyndai. Firestone said it was misfiring, and that it was very low on oil. They couldn't get it to duplicate the incident, so couldn't figure out the problem. An oil change was done. Multiple times in next 2 weeks the light would come on, then sometimes go off with no other issues, but sometimes the same knocking sounds and shaking. I took it back to firestone and they determined a coil needed to be replaced and a spark plug. And in that short of time the oil was seriously low again. These fixes were done. The next day after picking it up, same issues!!!! firestone won't work on it now as they don't know what else to do. We have an appointment with huyndai but not until sept. 12th. What am I supposed to do???? take a chance of dying every day to get to work? I can't afford a rental for the next few weeks until huyndai can look at it. This is so unfair. Why haven't you made huyndai recall and fix this very well known issue? please help!.

Unknown - for the past several months, since my car hit the 70,000 mileage mark, my check engine light has come on while experiencing hard idling, delayed acceleration/power while driving - particularly on gradual inclines and hilly roads. I would suspect it has something to do with the power or fuel system. I have changed oil twice and had a diagnostic test done and mechanic is unable to pinpoint issue since it is not consistent.

Inside of my car smells like gas strongly everytime it gets hot outside. I also can see the fumes coming out of the gas tank.

At slow speeds car just shuts off engine. Starts back up but does it constantly. Also the engine lifters are starting to make noises like a clacking someone said it was a defective motor.

Engine stalls while driving. No warning, intermitted full shut down of the engine. Can happen multiple times in a row, only making it a few hundred feet before stalling again. The only remedy is to put the car in park and start the engine again, however, that is not always easy to do when on the road, and the car can only drift and brake. It is not safe when the car stalls, especially in traffic -- can be dangerous to myself and others on the road if I am unable to pull the car over or get it to start up again on the interstate. I have been to a mechanic, and 2 dealerships who claim they cannot replicate the problem, and even when it stalled in the parking lot when I was leaving, there were no error codes on the computer. This being said, without a code or a proper diagnosis, I am at a standstill because "nothing can be done or authorized' by Hyundai without a code. I have been suggested by both dealerships to try and run it and 'kill the engine' because it is still under warranty for another 15,000 miles--but this puts myself and other drivers at risk because the car is unsafe to drive. There is a code from July 16, 2020, a little less than 2 months before I purchased the car about an engine light, this has yet to be addressed. This problem appeared out of nowhere one day while driving on the interstate and has been an issue ever since.

The steering wheel is loose. It rattles when I drive especially when I drive over rough areas like train track, pot hole or something like that. I can tell it is very loose when I am making turns. There is also issue with fuel smell inside my car. I frequently smell gas. To the point where I have to let the window down to let air in. The gas fumes are strong. The gas issue has been a problem for 2-3 years.

Car stutteres than stalls especially near time of oil change , oil light flashes when going moderate to low speeds and than it stutters and the engine cuts and the engine light , oil light and battery light come on if engine not started right away the power brakes and steering also die making it a dangerous situation especially on a highway happened many times between 2020-2022 but it has been getting worse happening 4 times just today 4/21/2022 engine type nu 1. 8l car make and model:2015 Hyundai Elantra limited.

I had my vehicle serviced to diagnose a ticking problem I had. I was told that it's an engine issue & known to Hyundai. As I was traveling 177 miles from home, the engine lost power and failed. Thankfully it didn't cause an accident. My engine has less than 100,000 miles!!! this should not happen and every engine that experiences this ought to be replaced through a recall!! probably, most people don't even realize this is a problem and let themselves be taken advantage of.

Engine code: p0335 crankshaft position sensor 'a' circuit severe issue consequences of continued driving - rough running - possible misfire - may not start in my case I was at work and it wouldn’t start at all. It ended up having to be towed. Had the battery tested and it was fine then I bought a “fixd” sensor and it told me the problem.
