2 Rear Seat Belt problem of the 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/12/2005

I was driving north bound on highway 99. On a Saturday afternoon in rush hour, in sacramento, CA. When I was hit on the rear passenger side by a black Nissan. When the cars touched we spun 3 times in the middle of traffic. We were lucky enough to not hit any other vehicle. The car stopped 8 feet away from the retaining wall, facing north bound. My infant (1 month old ) and 13 yr. Old were in the back. The infants car seat sifted about a foot towards the left of the drivers side. That means the rear seat belts were not working properly. My 13 yr. Old screamed as she hovered over her brother to protect him. Her seat belt was loose enough for her to allow her to do that. The total impact was on her side. She and I saw the car coming but there was no where to move. My front air bags did not deploy or open up. I was able to shield my face on the time of the impact. The insurance considered it a salvage and paid me off.

Failure Date: 02/01/2005

When purhased vehicle 3 years ago the seat belts worked. About 6-8 months later 2 rear seat belts, one on the left and one on the right, quit working. The seat belt will not move from the retractor. This happened without any accident or trauma to the seat belt, they simply quit working. Took vehicle to dealer, who said consumer would have to pay out of pocket fopr seat belt repairs. Contacted manufacturer, who stated whatever the dealer said goes. No corrections have been made on the vehicle. Consumer wanted dealer to pay for seat belt repairs.

5 Rear Seat Belt problem of the 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/31/2003

My daughter was driving our 2002 Hyundai Elantra when she hit someone from behind. All of the injuries from this accident were minor, but the rear seatbelt became a major concern. Our grandson, who is almost 2 years old, was in his carseat in the back seat on the passengers side. His seatbelt did not hold his seat. He and the carseat were thrown forward against the back of the front seat. He had some bruising on his knee and struggled to walk for a day or two and this seems to be the extent of his inbjuries. However, I am concerned about what would happen if this had been a more serious crash. I spoke with the local dealer, hunters Chevrolet, and they gave me some crap about sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. It all depended on the amount of enertia the car seat generated when it flew forward. This doesn't sound right or safe to me. Also, I am interested in finding out why the driver's airbag did not deploy.
