The z01 diode failed causing the brake lights not to illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed. There is no warning to the driver that this failure has occurred. This is a known issue by Hyundai. They released a TSB, technical service bulletin 09-be-023, concerning the issue but the solution is to replace the same diode when it has failed. No improvements have been made to make the part more reliable. It is a serious safety issue as the driver has no indication that the brake lights do not work putting them, passengers, and other drivers at risk of a serious rear end collision.
My 2011 Genesis sedan with 30,000 miles had brake lights fail 2 times. I would press the brakes and none of the brake lights would come on. On both occasions, the issue was due to a failed diode per the dealership. I noticed that there is a brake light recall from Hyundai-kia that I saw in the news today. However, the article seemed to suggest that it only covers the Genesis coupe. However, I can tell you that I had similar issues with the Genesis sedan as well with the diode failure mentioned above. On the first incident around 10/2012, another driver on the road alerted me regarding the issue. The second time, around 1/2013, I noticed it on the driveway.
