1 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 08/01/2025

On multiple occasions the emergency braking system has engaged while making a lane change because the collision warning system thinks the vehicle is getting to close to the vehicle being passed. When this happens in city traffic, it has resulted in near misses from vehicles behind and in the lane for which a legal lane change is being made to avoid stopping or slowing traffic in the initial lane. The driver should always have such control. When this happens and the car is trying to be accelerated or at least maintain the current speed as the lane change is made, the brakes very aggressively counter the driver’s actions. Since this has happened more than a dozen times, including within the first few months of ownership, information in follow-on fields will use approximate most recent occurrence.

2 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2024 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 03/03/2025

On Monday [xxx] I was driving home from work going 45 mph when my forward collision warning came on and the car stopped. However, there was no one in front of me. This was extremely dangerous and if there was a car behind me I could have been hit. I am extremely scared to drive this car. I had it towed to lynne’s Hyundai in bloomfield NJ. They said their computer could not find an issue so had nothing to fix and asked me to pick up the car. However, after what I experienced I refused and called corporate Hyundai. They told me my safety was their number one priority and they would resolve this for me. However, after they spoke to the dealership they said they could not duplicate the problem so nothing could be done. I gave numerous solutions that would make me happy but none were taken. I now have a car I am literally scared to death to drive and had another malfunction with the front sensor yesterday where it told me the car in front of me was pulling away but it was stopped. The vehicle is available for inspection. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

3 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 11/23/2024

Vehicle was service at a Hyundai dealer for routine required maintenance to continue the warranty. Less than 24 hours later I was driving my special needs, handicap daughter to breakfast and pulled into a handicap parking space and placed my foot on the brake. The pedal seemed to not have any tension and go to the floor. The emergency collision warning went off, but the brakes did not work. The vehicle jumped over a parking curb, knocking over a handicap sign, going across the sidewalk, hitting a garbage can and finally coming to a stop in a brick building.

4 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 10/20/2024

On four separate occasions now, I have been driving on the highway at roughly 60 mph, no cars in front of or beside me, and nothing else obstructing the roadway, when completely out of nowhere the emergency braking activates for 3-5 seconds. Thankfully there was only a car behind me on one occasion, and they were far enough behind to not collide after my sudden braking.

5 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/01/2024

My wife's car t-boned another vehicle, but the air bags didn't deploy. Luckily, she wasn't hurt badly, but the vehicle was deemed a total loss, so you can imagine the force of the collision. The forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking didn't activate either. I reported it to Hyundai. They sent an inspector to examine the vehicle, and I also showed them photos and a copy of the police report, but they claim that my car was hit on the side, and the pre collision system doesn't detect imminent side impact. That's completely outrageous. I don't know what their inspector wrote in their report, but the photos and police report are irrefutable proof that my wife had a frontal collision with the side of another vehicle. Hyundai kept denying it because they didn't want to help financially. I attached a copy of their determination letters (the second one was after I submitted a copy of the police report to prove that my wife's car is the one that hit the other vehicle, but Hyundai refused to see it as it happened). This is a link to see the interior and exterior photos of the vehicle: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

6 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 06/22/2024

While driving, my car completely turned off and the dashboard say “engine turn off”. This happened on two separate occasions. Also on separate occasions while I was driving the beep to indicate that I was too close to another car went off when I was not near another car, during that time it also emergency breaked on its own.

7 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 02/29/2024

After a routine service visit, the vehicle’s braking and speed?control systems began to behave abnormally. The abs/esc control module was replaced or reprogrammed without documentation, and immediately afterward the vehicle’s braking feel, speed?control behavior, and forward?collision warning timing changed noticeably. These changes created a safety risk because the vehicle no longer responded in a predictable way compared to its original performance. The affected components are available for inspection upon request. The issue was reproduced multiple times under normal driving conditions. Braking response became inconsistent, and the speed?control system no longer behaved as it did before the service. The timing and behavior of forward?collision alerts also changed compared to pre?service operation. These changes created unpredictability in traffic, especially during following?distance adjustments, stop?and?go situations, and sudden?braking scenarios. The dealership did not provide technical documentation or explanation for the module replacement or configuration changes and did not acknowledge the change in system behavior. The manufacturer’s customer service reviewed the case but did not provide technical findings. An independent service center could not verify the original configuration because the manufacturer did not provide the manufacturer build sheet. The vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared before or after the issue. The only indication of a problem was the sudden change in braking, speed?control, and forward?collision system behavior immediately after the service visit.

8 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 01/30/2024

Had left costco and while driving away down road to intersection, the 2023 Kona sel abruptly locked the brakes and briefly skidded, as it displayed emergency braking activated message on display. I had crossed a dotted line to enter a left turn lane at about 20 mph to make a turn which should not have triggered the aeb-there wasnt anything in front of me whatsoever except empty road, the roadway was dry and unobstructed. I maintained control of the car after being surprised by the brakes locking up for a second or two without any warning. I have not experienced this before after driving the Kona for little over a year and a half, with 22, 000 miles. I experienced repeated phantom braking problems with a 2120 Mazda cx30 I previously owned; the Kona braked harder into a brief skid but shorter in time than the cx30. This was more dangerous!.

9 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 01/03/2024

This has happened about 15 times since I bought my Hyundai Kona ev ultimate new in February 2021: when a car in front of me slows very quickly, occasionally my car tries to help me too much. I have been in complete control of the situations, but my car beeps it's warning, adds it's efforts and the brakes lock up with tires squealing, and we stop with plenty of space in between myself and the car in front of me. This usually happens in freeway traffic. It is terrifying and I always immediately look in my rearview mirror to see if I'm going to get rear-ended. I haven't been hit yet, though I have been flipped off a few times. One of these days, people will be hurt, along with the damages to the cars. The first time it happened was only about 2 weeks after the purchase. I had my 5-year old twin granddaughters in their car seats. Just as described above, the brakes locked up and it really scared them (me too!). I took it back to the salesman I bought it from at stevens creek Hyundai and he said it was just a setting with the response time, so he changed it. But it kept happening intermittently. I brought into the future Hyundai of concord dealer and they test drove it, could not replicate it, and after checking with their computers, said that the "system is working as designed". Frustrated that I wasn't being heard, I contacted Hyundai consumer affairs. They supported me and I got a case number and another appointment at a different dealer, dublin Hyundai. This time, I went on the test drive and the technician was able to replicate the situation. At first he said it was a setting, but I said that I didn't care what the setting was, this should never happen. It is very dangerous. He agreed and said he would need to contact "techline" the next day. But when I tried to find out any information about this conversation, I got only silence. Then I got a message that I could come pick up my car and that "the system is working as designed". Help!.

10 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/30/2023

I started directing the car to the side of the road to park. As I was guiding the car to a stop, with my foot on the brake, I was about 12 ft. From the car in front of me when the car suddenly accelerated. The vehicle accelerated for approximately 10 ft. Before the anti-collision system auto-braked the car just prior to impacting the car in front of me.

11 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 08/30/2023

While driving on the highway on an extended trip my cruise control dropped its speed from 71 to 65 without warning. On one occasion it happened while I was in the passing lane with a lot of traffic behind me. It created a very dangerous situation before I could get into the right lane. Another incident was when again I was driving along, no one in front of me, beside me or behind me and the speed dropped once again. Had I been in traffic who knows what would have happened. I have turned the automatic breaking system off because while on a trip I was in the right lane when a car cut me off. The breaks went on and the car went totally out of control! I have filed a complaint with Hyundai and after waiting 8 weeks for a call regarding my case number they refuse to acknowledge that it is a manufacturing issue. I have had the vehicle into the dealer 3 times and they have not been able to replicate it by driving around the area, but have not taken it out on the highway at a higher speed which is when it occurs and when one would use the cruise control. I have only 9,000 miles on the car at this point and no remedy in sight.

12 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 08/13/2023

I was driving up an incline when I overheated, causing smoke to come out of the transmission case. The vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of the road, which could have caused an accident or fire. Regarding the transmission, I opened the hood to let the vehicle cool down for an hour.

Within 1 mile of having windshield replaced the mirror broke free falling down completely distracted the driver, tried to grab mirror did not see the car ahead applied his brakes the forward collision warning and the automatic emergency braking did not warn of the danger or avoid it . 15 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Two times on a highway, the car engaged the automatic emergency brakes when the driver was driving straight forward. We were not turning, breaking, or accelerating and there were no cars close to our car.

16 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 11/12/2022

Rad bearing defect. Engine needs to be replaced.

17 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 10/23/2022

This is my 2nd report on the same issue. There is another report from me on the first and I will be discussing this with my Hyundai dealer today. On a 250 mile road trip, on the expressway, two separate times, the car suddenly braked hard and the emergency warning flashed on the speedometer. Each time it was about 3-5 seconds. On the second incident, my passenger thinks she noticed it happening in conjunction with a car appearing on my side. She said the side mirror warning lit up at the same time the car started braking. It could just be a coincidence though. Thankfully, neither time did the brakes fully stop the car, but damn, it is very scary when it happens on the expressway and I am very nervous to drive with the feature on.

18 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 10/08/2022

Incident #1: auto emergency breaking system sensed false situation and auto braked nearly causing high speed accident. Caused while exiting I-80 west bound off ramp with two lanes ramp that exits. I was in the inside lane and there was another vehicle in the outside lane. Assuming the system thought I was going to turn into the outer car and braked suddenly. Incident #2: lane keeping system, constantly fights me for no known reason. While in las vegas on flamingo road on oct. 10, 2022 the system suddenly jerked the car to the left and nearly into a head-on crash. My family is very lucky to be okay. Car has problems when road markings are not consistent or when using reflectors (vs painted lines) or when there are exits. It's safer to leave the system off in my experience.

19 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/20/2022

On 9/20/2022 I was driving on the expressway at approximately 60 mph when my car suddenly applied brakes and slowed considerably without reason and started flashing the emergency braking notification with alert noises. The notifications stopped after about 6 seconds and the car did not come to a complete stop, as I probably would not be here today, but it rattled me and now I have lost confidence in my car and feel this can cause a serious accident. The car has 1,322 miles and I have noticed one other incident at speed under 10 mph approaching traffic light. . I called my dealer to let them know. They made a note in my profile because they didn’t think they would be able to do anything. I searched google and found others have discussed the exact same issue with the same model. This should be addressed! I will be turning this feature off.

20 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/14/2022

Emergency braking system stopped the car suddenly. There weren't any cars in front of me or next to me. Thankfully I was driving slow through a road in our parking lot and there were no cars behind me. It has only happened once so far. Obviously it startled me and made me wonder how safe the car is to drive. I haven't said anything to the dealer, but plan to when I go in for yearly maintenance in a week. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to this happening.

21 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 07/09/2022

I was driving on the freeway at about speed limit. I was at a safe distance (3 car lengths away) from the car in front of me. The emergency brake activated. It did not stop the car, but I felt a pause in the drive. The message on my dashboard stated "emergency brake activated". A few minutes later, the emergency brake activated again. Again, it did not stop the car, but I felt another pause in the drive. The message "emergency brake activated" also came on the dashboard. I had a passenger in the car.

22 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

During collision, airbags did not deploy. In attempt to avoid collision, automatic breaks failed and did not stop the vehicle, cruise control continued to attempt to drive the vehicle despite collision warning and did not stop- coupled with my manual breaking, the car did not stop. Car is currently at a tow lot waiting for insurance. My safety was put at risk due to airbags not deploying during serious collision, the breaks malfunctioned. At this time, the car is in the beginning stages of insurance. My car did not display any prior failure features.

23 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 05/12/2022

I was driving on the freeway the car in front of me was at least 4 car lengths away. My car flashed emergency breaks and locked it’s breaks coming to a stop on the fast lane of the freeway. Nearly avoided an accident. This has happened twice- both with no reason and no issue in front of me to cause the car to think it needed to suddenly use emergency brakes.

24 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 10/01/2021

When starting the vehicle, the forward collision avoidance system is automatically on, this is the default. I must take the active step of turning it off every time I begin to drive, if I do not wish to use it. The issue is that the avoidance system has several times almost caused me to have an accident and thrown me forward, through sudden and hard breaking if the car thinks I am too close to the vehicle in front of me. This is why I continually turn it off. I would like to point out that I have never rear ended anyone in over 40 years of driving, so rather than truly avoiding any collision, the car causes me to come very close to having an accident, as the sudden and hard braking has caused me to swerve while preparing to pass another vehicle.

25 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 09/08/2021

We bought the car in July and owned it 70 days and 1,530 miles. The automatic emergency breaking engaged several times without any reason. Sometimes at lower speeds <40 and sometimes on the freeway >60. The last time was at 20 mph in a school zone and we were rear ended because of the unexpected stop. We had several near misses on the freeway, but the cars behind us managed to avoid us. The car has severe damage to the bumper, tailgate and blind spot warning, parking collision warning and rear cross traffic warning because of the accident and the car has been in the body shop awaiting parts/repair for the nearly entire month of September. No one was hurt and we didn't have the car long enough to take it back to the dealer to have the brake system checked. The accident would not have happened if the automatic emergency braking had worked properly.

26 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Hyundai Kona

Failure Date: 05/03/2021

My vehicle unnecessarily activated automatic emergency braking, locking the wheels and causing the truck behind me to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid crashing into my vehicle. This is the second time this has occurred with this car. I was driving in the slow lane of a limited access freeway. The lane was congested and I estimate the speed at about 40 mph. The cars ahead slowed and began to stop. I took my foot off the accelerator and moved to the brake. At this time I was three or four car lengths behind the car ahead, and could have stopped easily with firm but normal braking. As soon as my foot touched the brake pedal, my vehicle locked its brakes and screeched to an abrupt stop. Objects on the passenger seat were thrown to the floor. A truck behind me had to swerve to the right of my vehicle to avoid crashing into it. The driver followed me honking for half a mile until my exit. This happened once before, in February 2020. Following that incident, I took the car to Hyundai dealer service, who advised that "the car is operating correctly. " see attached service report. Note that no vehicles changed lanes in front of mine during either incident, but notwithstanding, the dealer service suggested that as a cause.
