36 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2015

Gas fumes and smell are in the interior of the vehicle. This is most prevalent when the vehicle has a full tank of gas. This occurs both when the car is in motion and when it is garaged. The dealership service department could find no cause but this has been occurring for approximately 18 months. I am concerned with the safety and health aspects of the gas fume build in the interior of the vehicle.

37 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2015

The issue began about a month ago during a long interstate trip. If the fuel gauge reached the 1/4 tank mark, it would plummet to empty. As the car ran, the gauge would rise up and fall again repeatedly. Sometimes when the car was started (even with a full tank), the gauge would never rise above "e. " thankfully, the car never stalled and always started. I just had it serviced today. Both sending units were replaced and was told by a Hyundai dealer that they keep these parts (fuel sensors) in stock due to the high frequency of calls they receive from other owners with this same problem. Surprised there has been no recall issued yet!.

38 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2015

I filled up my tank to full one evening. After which I came home and parked for the night. The next morning I was leaving and noticed my low gas light came on and it was on empty. This had happened presviously to me but correctly itself so I continued to drive. While driving my check engine light also came on. Eventually the tank read 1/2 full and the low gas light turned off. However the check engine light is still on. This is not ok. I take great care of my vehicle and should feel safe driving in it with my children. I'm very disappointed with Hyundai.

39 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2015

In July/Aug of 2015 my gas gauge and miles-to-empty indicator started going crazy. I would fill the tank with gas but the gauge read empty. While driving, the miles-to-empty indicator would constantly, rapidly change from 200 to 40 to 68 to 113 to whatever so I couldn't tell how much gas I had left. I took the car in for an oil change at Hyundai on Aug 8, 2015 and asked them to also look at the gas gauge. He said that there was nothing they could do until the engine light came on. The engine light finally came on at the end of November 2015 so I took the car in 12/10/15, and they said they had to replace two fuel sensors in the gas tank. When the problem initially started, I had about 64000 miles on the car.

40 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2015

While driving on the highway the fuel propulsion system light came on and the fuel gauge read empty. However, based on mileage and the last time I had filled the gas tank, I knew I should have close to half a tank. The next morning the gauge read close to half a tank. While driving the fuel gauge marked once again empty. As a driver, I had no idea how much gasoline the car really had. I took the car to the dealership and they retrieved the code p0469: fuel level sensors a and b failure. Hyundai dealership/warranty did not cover the cost of the replacement, even though the car only had 40, 228 miles. I had to pay $600. 00 for the replcement of the two fuel sensors.

41 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

Just as the other noted complaints, my check engine light has been coming on and off and my fuel gauge indicator has been extremely temperamental. Rarely it'll show the correct level - usually once I fill my tank, my fuel gage shoes I am below empty and flashes that I have no miles left to drive until my tank is empty. I have resorted to tracking my mileage with the trip function because as others have discovered - to repair it costs an arm and a leg due to expensive labor from where the sensor needs to be accessed to replace it, under the driver seat.

42 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2015

Filled tank and read empty with low fuel light on. The next day while driving the more I drove the more the fuel needle went up until it eventually read full and the low fuel light went out. Now usually when it gets down to about 1/2 tank needle will drop to empty, fuel light will come on, range indicator will read----and now the check engine light comes and goes.

43 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2015

Erratic fuel guage registration. Then empty with low fuel light on. Tank had just been filled.

44 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2015

After fueling up, to a full tank, the fuel gauge still registered empty and fuel light and check engine light came on.

45 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2015

My gas gauge stopped working correctly, going up and down but never passing one half a tank and the check engine light remains on all the time. The mechanic said the seats would need to be taken out to get to the sensor, that it was probably bad and would need a new one. I tried to estimate how much gas I had in the tank by using the odometer and resetting at 0 for a gas fillup till I got the car in for service. The tank would kick the gas back at half a tank so I was getting only 8 gallons in. On Tuesday I ran out of gas on a highway going 55, which was dangerous, as there was a truck behind me and he had to swerve into the median to avoid hitting me when my car died. I was towed to the mechanic. The mechanic checked bytaking the seats out and putting in a new sensor. He filled the gas tank up (19. 9 gallons) and yet with the new sensor in, the gauge still reads only half a tank and the check engine light is still on. Something else is wrong and I see that many other people have this safety issue with this car and it has not been recalled or resolved effectively. Does someone have to die first? are we sure someone has not already?.

46 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2015

When I started the engine, the fuel gauge showed the gas tank empty, the check engine light was on, and the empty gas tank light was on, even though the gas tank was filled yesterday. Then fuel level gauge is fluctuating from full to empty tank when driving.

47 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2015

It happened in the morning when I started the engine, the fuel gauge showed the gas tank empty, the check engine light was on, and the empty gas tank light was on, even though the gas tank was filled 2 days before and the range on odo keeps flashing without number shown. After driving about 2, 3 miles, the fuel light was off, and the fuel gauge had move up just a little above empty line. Monday morning 3/16/15 when I started the engine to go to work, the check engine light was off but the range on odo still flashing. I was terrified when I see those light on and off, specially when driving for long distance not knowing when the gas is empty.

48 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

Tl the contact owns 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that after she filled the gas tank it only read 1/3 full. The vehicle was taken to dealer advantage Hyundai, hicksville, NY 11801, who diagnosed the vehicle as, a gas gauge malfunction and the fuel sensor and the purge flow valve needed to be replaced and the vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the same symptoms three times since March of 2015 and was repaired but, now the symptoms have recurred. The manufacturer was notified and kept referring the contact back to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000. Jc.

49 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2015

Fuel gauge fluctuates a lot . When I I fill tank it says empty. Then it changes while I drive to 3/4. It moves all over. Never a correct reading.

50 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2015

After fueling my gas tank completely 16 gallons of gas I began traveling on freeway only to have my gas gauge plummet to empty and digital range went blank. Since then I am unable to tell how much fuel I have. The reading fluctuate rapidly. I am terrified that I will run out of fuel on a busy expressway or during severe cold weather due to risk of harm and or injury. I was told by Hyundai dealership that sensors are faulity.

51 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2015

Fuel level gauge is registering as empty when completely full and then fluctuating from full to empty tank when driving. Check engine light code is registering as faulty fuel level sensor. Unable to determine how much fuel is actually in the tank and feel that this is a safety issue if unsure how much gas I have. This appears to be a very common problem with this make/model as there are 95 other complaints just on this site and many many more when looking at other comments posted online.

52 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2015

Car stalled on highway out of gas. Gas gauge showed half tank. Dangerous situation, stuck in middle lane of busy highway, traffic passing on both sides about 65 miles per hour.

53 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

When you fill up the gas tank, it register empty and the check engine light comes on. Sometimes the gauge will read correctly and then it goes back to empty. I have to always fill the car up because I don't know how much gas is in the car. This is annoying. It very expensive to fix. This is the third Hyundai I've bought (two Santa Fe's and one sonata) and this car is the worst model I bought.

54 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

Fuel gauge show empty and there was 3/4 of a tank. The gauge reading go from full to empty constantly, we worry we will be traveling and the car will stop because the gauge reads there is gas and it will be empty.

55 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2014

Late last year (2014) my gas gauge suddenly showed empty (with empty light coming on) on my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 2. . 3 l engine. In addition, the 'check engine' came on and stayed on. I took vehicle to my mechanic, who told me the fail codes related to the a and b sensors in the fuel tank not functioning properly. The cost of the repair was estimated at around $700. 00. My vehicle is no longer under any warranty. I asked if this defect is causing environmental problems or other problems that could cause engine damage, etc. And he said no. I said well, I could live with this by zeroing out my trip indicator and keeping track that way, knowing my approximate mpg. (I live in wisconsin on the lakeshore and we are under mandatory emissions testing due to the polluted air coming up from illinois and being trapped by lake michigan. ) he told that next year (current 2015), my vehicle would not pass emissions because the 'check engine' light is on! now as registration is due in November, I have to get it fixed. First off, I believe this is a safety issue because if I forgot to zero out my trip odometer and ran out of gas in tin-buk-two, I or my wife (who doesn't have a concealed carry permit) could be stranded in a dangerous area. Secondly, I get screwed on not being able to register my vehicle due to a non-emissions related issue.

56 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

The fuel gauge in my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe as started bobbing up and down. When I start the car it shows that I have no fuel then raises up to about half a tank and then goes back down to about a quarter before slowly raising up again. This car has caused me more trouble than any other car I have owned.

57 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2014

Fuel sensor problem. Gas tank does not register full and sometimes the check engine light comes on because of a fuel sensor problem. Had a half a tank of gas today; filled it up and for 15 miles (at least) after that it read empty and the fuel light was on. The check engine light is suppose to indicate real problems -- now I don't know when to trust it. Please make hyundia recall this part and make this repair.

58 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

Fill up the gas tank and all is well until the tank is about half full then the gauge bounces around and the low fuel light comes on.

59 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2014

The gas gauge is very sporadic. Sometimes it reads correctly other times it does not. It can say empty when full or 1/4 of a tank when full. I researched this on the Hyundai internet forums and it seems to be a very common fault with this vehicle. With so many occurrences you would think this would be covered under a recall.

60 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2014

Fuel sensors failed causing fuel level to read empty even with a full tank. Also triggered check engine light. Hyundai is well aware of the problem but refuses to assist.

61 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

Fuel level gauge becomes erratic and does not indicate correct fuel level in gas tank. Recently "check engine light" came on and diagnosis by mechanic was "fuel level sensor a, circuit intermittent". This is a very expensive repair and should not occur on a vehicle at this stage. I have now become aware that this is an extremely common defect in the Hyundai Santa Fe line of vehicles. This defect can create a dangerous situation if a driver were to unknowingly run out of fuel while operating the vehicle. I believe that a recall to replace the defective part(s) would be justified. I am hoping that your agency will look into this matter and take the appropriate steps. Thank you.

62 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

Gas guage began tiling up and down. Diagnosed as bad fuel sensors, had sensors replaced. Filled tank with gas ,gas guage showed half tank then few days later showed empty. Vehicle's been parked ever since fearing accident. Scary being on the road not knowing how much fuel remian, had to limp home constantly capping off tank. Went on line to find possible problem and found several hundred drivers with same problem. Called manufacturer to issue a possible recall and not wait till someone get killed or stranded on a dark highway. Please convince Hyundai to issue a recall or at least absorb the payment to have this problem fixed.

63 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

The fuel sensor on my 2008 Santa Fe is malfunctioning and not reporting the actual level of fuel in the tank. It is also causing the empty fuel indicator and the check engine light to stay lit all the time, so not only do I have to manually measure my fuel usage by miles driven, I also have no idea of any potential engine problems since that light/warning system has effectively been rendered useless. Hyundai dealerships are currently offering to fix the problem for about $800. 00 and have the parts readily on hand since the problem is occurring so frequently now. This appears to be a defect with the earlier Santa Fe models and considering the potential consequences of accidentally running out of fuel or having an engine problem and not knowing it until it's too late, a recall should be issued.

64 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

As is the case with many others filing complaints, we too have the defective fuel level sensor in our 2008 Santa Fe. It has also resulted in the check engine light being on at all times. The fuel gauge shows an empty tank at all times. We are forced to rely on the trip odometer to know when we need fuel.

65 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2014

I filled up with gas when I left the gas station my gas gauge registered empty and my gas light came on and I just filled the tank with gas. My trip odometer was going crazy could not reset it, then my check engine light came which got me concered I took it to auto zone they put it on there machine and the code came up for fuel sensor, this seem to be a problem with alot of these Santa Fe my daughters 2007 Santa Fe did the same thing cost her 600. 00 dollars to have fixed.

66 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

My 2008 gas gauge is not working properly or reading the correct levels of fuel. When I fill the tank up, the low level indicator light illuminates and stays on for several days. The check engine light also illuminates. After several miles of driving (few days), both lights will go off and gas gauge works properly. Around the half tank mark, the indicator light comes back on showing empty and check engine light appears. I've taken the vehicle to dealership and they quoted nearly $800 to fix this problem. Even though they admitted that this is a common occurrence, there is no recall??? this is very dangerous and should be investigated.

67 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2014

The fuel gauge doesn't seem to be working properly. When I fill up the tank it works fine but when its about half a tank, the low fuel light turns on and gauge reads empty.

68 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

The fuel level sensor in the tank began to fail, causing the fuel gauge to behave erratically. Fuel levels would swing wildly from full to empty. The cel was thrown, but not until after the erratic behavior was observed. Without a cel to warn of a problem, the driver may think they have fuel when they do not and potentially run out of gas. This would be a serious safety hazard at highway speeds. We've spoken with Hyundai and this is not a recall or even a TSB issue, despite the fact that the problem is well documented among owners of this vehicle. The problem is common and this vehicle should be recalled.

69 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2014

Fuel gauge not working properly, it is moving erratically. The gas tank is full while the gauge is showing empty, the check engine light is on. I am just worried that I might be strained somewhere when the tank is really empty. I can't trust the gauge now. This should be recalled already since there are so many complaints about it . I feel like I should not pay for the repair as it is a manufacturer defect .

70 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Gas gauge fluctuates, and reads empty even when tank is nearly full. Appears to be the common fuel sensor failure that is well-documented on these vehicles. One forum suggested that everyone should report failures to NHTSA to apply pressure for a Hyundai recall, so add me to the list of frustrated owners.
