Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe based on all problems reported for the 2009 Santa Fe.

1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2020

Fuel gauge became erratic and triggered check engine light to come on also it will fluctuate a little bit when it hits the 1/4 mark and the low fuel light will come on. It will go from 1/4 to empty can not tell how much fuel is in the tank. When I fill the tank it registers empty and the and the low fuel light indicator comes on. Starting the car again on the same day or the next day, the gage comes up again to the full or half way mark and the light goes out. The car stalls while in city traffic causing a dangerous situation another car could crash into me.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2019

Gas gauge highly inaccurate. Fuel warning light goes on and check engine light also appears. Have to pull over as afraid to drive. Finally go to nearest gas station only to find out that gas tank was still half full. This has happened a number of times. Vehicle has only 60,000 miles.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2018

The check engine light comes on when you are around a half a tank of gas and even if you fill it up it takes it 2 or 3 times of starting it for it to go off. I'm not sure what is causing this. Also the esc and the abs lights have been on and won't go off. The book says the abs light is for service but I have has it serviced several time and it still doesn't go out.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

For the last year, my fuel gauge has been malfunctioning. At first, it only happened every once in a while, but once I got to about 8 months, the gauge has constantly told me the wrong fuel level. I have asked a mechanic about it and it is the fuel level sensors located in the gas tank that are malfunctioning. Apparently, this is a problem with many of the Santa Fe's that were built around that time. I have a low mileage vehicle. It was bought in 2016 with 22,000 miles. The gas gauge problem started around 40,000 miles and only happened a few times. The constant check engine light illumination and constant malfunction of the gas gauge started at 50,000 miles and I am now at 60,000 miles. The problem happens when the car is stationary and while I am driving it. I have to keep a full tank at all times just do I don't run out if gas.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2018

Serious fuel gauge malfunction. Gauge always reads empty, even after a fill up. Gauge continues to read empty whether stationary, in motion, on a city street, turning braking, etc. I believe the cause of the safety risk is a failed fuel sender assembly, likely parts 94460-0w000 and 94430-0w000. This appears to be a widespread problem in the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe model. Definitely a safety hazard, as I cannot tell how much fuel is in my tank while driving. Another common issue with this make and model is a failure of the purge valve. This has also happened in my vehicle. This defect will prohibit the car from starting if you fill up a full tank. So, the driver is forced to fill up less than a full tank so that they can be confident that the car will start after putting gas in the vehicle. This is a less serious hazard than the fuel gauge, but worrisome nonetheless.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2017

Fuel senders are failing. Check engine light comes on and fuel gauge shows near empty even when vehicle has full tank.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2017

Fuel gauge not working properly, it will go from showing there is gas in the tank to completely empty, then back to gas in the tank. This has lead to the check engine light coming on. I don't want to get stuck out in this cold weather with an empty tank due to a faulty fuel gauge.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2016

Faulty fuel sensor gauge. When trying to fill an empty tank the pump shuts off after only a couple of gallons. If I wasn't paying attention I would have thought it was full. I've seen complaints that the fuel gauge stops working on this car at similar milage, if that happens too I won't know how much gas is in my car. I could then run out of gas while driving and lose power steering. This is an accident hazard.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2016

I want to join the many others who have launched complaints on this and other websites about the faulty fuel gauge sensors of the 2009 Santa Fe. When I fill my gas tank, the fuel gauge only registers at half a tank and the low fuel light comes on. Now my check engine light is on. When I brought the vehicle to auto zohn to have the engine light checked, it does, indeed, come up as a faulty fuel level sensor. Hyundai is obviously aware of this problem as evidenced by all of the consumer feedback, yet it has failed to do anything to assist. Unlike their counterparts at Toyota, Volkswagen and Chrysler, it shouldn't take a tragedy for Hyundai to step up and address this safety concern.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2016

Fuel sensor shows gas level erratically both on gauge and digital display, usually when fuel level is below 1/3 left in tank. Check engine light also then displays erratically. This happens only when vehicle is stopped in traffic or in parked position with engine on. Happens only ,so far, in stop and go traffic and not on the hwy. Has been occurring since may 2016 with 105,000 miles.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2016

About a month ago my engine light kept coming on and every time I filled the tank with gas the car wont start unless I keep the foot on the gas while turning the ignition key then I have to switch the gear to drive with a foot on the brake and one on the gas. I took it to the dealership and had to replace the purge valve and the purge hose. Not even a week I went to fill the tank and my gauge dropped to empty and while I drive it starts to go up and down constantly it is hard to tell how much gas you have, I notice is very common on this make and model and year. This should be a recall since it is a safety hazard.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2016

After fueling my car, the gas gauge immediately dropped to empty and the light would come on. While driving it would then slowly creep up to about 3/4 of a tank. At the half way mark, it would go up and down gradually so that I could never trust how much gas was truly in my tank, leading me to always want to refuel at the halfway mark. This happened continually in between fueling and never corrected itself.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

Fuel level stopped working, check engine light came on. Mechanic said the code called for replacement of fuel level sensors. $500 repair and the problem was not corrected. I never know how much gas I have and I can never put more than 8 gallons in when I fuel up. But gas gauge will go up to have then drop to empty then go up to half a tank. Very horrific. Check engine light is on which will cause me to fail inspection.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2015

The engine lights stays on when you fill the gas tank it still says empty when driving everything will shut off this is for the second time in less than a year.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

Only 85k miles on the Hyundai used for normal driving. The fuel gauge/sensors have begun acting erratic. Filled the gas tank and gauge showed full. Very next morning gauge down to a quarter tank. Purchased gas and only needed 3 gallons. Fuel gauge all over the place and not measuring gas correctly. Creates an unsafe condition as driver does not reliably know how much fuel is available. Many issues like this according to posts on internet. Hyundai has a systematic problem and should repair free of charge.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2015

Had about a half tank of gas and filled up before taking a road trip. Left station and noticed gauge did not move to full. Few miles down the road it started to slowly increase up to the fuel mark. After stopping again on down the road and restarting fuel gauge would show half tank then drop to empty and then back up to half tank. I have to keep getting gas and keep track of mileage so that I do not run out while on the interstate. From what I've read this is a very costly repair and is certainly a safety hazard as I travel a lot for work on the busy interstates and cannot chance running out of fuel.

17 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2015

Filled fuel tank and began driving on highway. As usual checked gages and noticed fuel gage at 1/4 full. Over time driving, needle on gage began to move up to point indicating approx. 3/4 full. Over balance of drive needle danced around the 3/4 full mark. I am reading numerous complaints from Hyundai owners of same problem over several model years. It appears Hyundai is denying a problem and has taken no steps to improve fuel level sensors and thus replacing with them with same is only band aide fix with potential of serious accident if vehicle does run out of gas on highway or crossing intersection. Vey poor position of company and when shopping for new car I will consider another manufacturer.

18 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2015

The light for my fuel tank came on saying empty, however I recalled just having put gas in the tank. A few days later the engine light began to come on. I took my car to autozone to test the engine light, I was told there was a problem with the fuel sensor. I later called Hyundai after constantly having to watch my gas and mileage to make sure the tank does not run empty. Hyundai advised it is possibly the fuel sending unit without even having to look at the car and advised it would cost about $800 to repair. The rep in the parts department stated they have had several calls regarding replacing the part. This could potentially be a serious issue, especially if you are driving on a busy road or highway. There seems to be several people having the same issue.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

My gas gauge showed a half tank one day then it showed empty then it showed empty/ the next day it would not start I new there was gas in it an hour later it started but after I was out it went back to empty. This problem needs to be fixed several people I meet in parking lots have the same problem. Are you waiting for someone to get in the rear when it shuts off and people get killed big law suits will happen iam sure it would cheaper to fix this then get sued. I see there are a lot complaints.

20 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

When the fuel gauge gets around half full, the gauge bounces around below the half full and empty. The check engine indicator light comes on and stays on. Cannot exactly determine how much fuel is left in tank. Had fuel sensing parts replaced at a cost of approximately $600 by a master ase certified technician. After repairs we filled the tank with fuel. Although tank was full it only registered 3/4 full with a range of 254 miles. Before this incident, the range was 320 - 324 miles. Returned to technician who alerted us that he has seen many similar problems with Hyundais and kias. He believes Hyundai should recall and fix problems. This attested to by similar problems listed on your site safer car. Gov. My wife and I are in our 70s and are concerned we will run out of gas on a remote highway or engine will stall in traffic.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2015

Fuel float in gas tank stuck therefore no fuel gage reading.

22 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2015

Noticed fuel gauge started to fluctuate whenever vehicle was parked for a while. Stopped at church showed 1/4 tank with a range of 90 miles, stopped at walmart showed between 1/4 & 1/2 tank and a range of 147 miles. About to take this vehicle on the road and really have no choice but to have it fixed. Drove old vehicles for years and never had a fuel gauge go bad. This is only under warranty for 5/60k so thanks Hyundai, I am crossing them off the list of my next car model. Btw $600 bill for this. People want to know if it's a safety factor. Of course not, running out of gas on the middle of an interstate can't be a safety problem. To me it's no different than having your keys turn your ignition switch off cause they're too heavy.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2015

Vehicle fuel gauge is erratic. With a full tank of fuel the gauge sometimes reads empty with the low fuel light on. Other times it may read as half or anywhere in between. Probably defective fuel sending unit.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2015

Filled up gas tank and a short time later gas gauge showed half tank. We paid particular attention to watching gauge and it randomly would go up and down. A few days later the check engine warning light came on. We went to our mechanic who checked for the reason for check engine light and the result was a code indicating that the fuel tank level sensor was working intermittently. This is a real problem as we're not sure at any time what the level of fuel is since it goes up and down. It is obvious in researching this problem that this is an ongoing issue. We love our Santa Fe but these types of issues will certainly weigh in on our car replacement decision.

25 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2015

Fuel gauge does not work properly. No matter how much gas is in tank it usually registers empty, and occasionally it will randomly fluctuate up and down. Because of this issue the check engine light is always on. This happens while car is stationary or in motion. This is a known issue by Hyundai.

26 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

Pulled into gas station with a hair under a 1/4 tank of gas, shut off engine and had the attendant fill the tank. After the fill was complete I started the car engine and the fuel gauge read "e" and the yellow light came on. I moved the car forward, backward and forward again and the gauge moved slightly off the "e". I drove home the the gauge move to just under half. I turned the car off and when I started it this morning with the remote start the gauge read half a tank but when I put the key in and turned it the gauge went to "e" again and the yellow light was back. After about 10 minutes on my ride to work the gauge went to 1/4 tank and the light went off and so far today it has stayed there. By the looks of complaints on the internet it seems to be a problem Hyundai has.

27 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2015

I own a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe, the check engine light came on with odbii code p0464, fuel level sender(sensor) unit malfunction "intermittent operation". I normally repair my own vehicles and have repaired cars for many years. The issue I have is that, only on rare occasions should these fuel tank parts go bad on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on it. I'm now seeing more and more complaints about these fuel tank issues, consider a recall for Hyundai vehicles.

28 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2015

As with many other owners, we share the fuel sender sensor problem with our 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe . The codes are for both the left and right sides, meaning both will have to be replaced. The fuel gauge empty light is always on, no matter how much gas is in the tank, and check engine light as well. Quoted from $350 to $620 dollars from local repair shops. We failed NJ inspection due to engine light, and this is a dangerous and costly problem, and we ran out of gas on the busy garden state parkway with our children in the car, incurring towing charges. It is certainly a safety issue that Hyundai is avoiding. I have another 2009 Hyundai (accent) with no problems, so it is safe to assume ( with so many complaints ) that it is a Santa Fe problem. Please have Hyundai look into this dangerous problem . Thank you.

29 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2014

The check engine light came on and fuel gage went down to empty, even though I had a full tank. Took to my mechanic and he said the check engine code indicated "p0464 - fuel level sensor 'a' ckt intermittent" problem. He informed me of his price, but recommended I go to a Hyundai dealership first to see if covered under the 100k power train warranty. Took to local dealer on 11/10/14 and they said it wasn't covered or considered a recall, and it would cost over $800 to repair. My mechanic suggested I use a bottle or two of chevron techron fuel additive with my next fill up because it may clean the sending unit, as gasoline tends to coat the grid that contacts pass over causing the gage failure. A 20 oz and 12 oz bottle were added and shortly after, the check engine light went out and the fuel gage began to register properly again. This lasted about 2 months, but then the light came on again in January and gage went down when I started up the car one morning. I tried the same thing again with the techron, and it worked for about 1 month. The problem has occurred several more times lately but the gage problem is inconsistent. Sometimes everything seems good then if I happen to accelerate quickly, everything goes haywire again. I don't want to keep paying for bottles of techron on every other fill-up or use premium gas (which didn't work btw), and I also think this problem is common enough on 2007-2009 Santa Fe's on internet postings that its time for Hyundai to step up to fix this problem as a recall. Some think it's not important because it hasn't caused a crash, fire, or accident resulting in injury or death, but if someone ignores it and runs out of gas on a major highway, in a tunnel (I go through one 2x per day), or another dangerous spot, it very well could cause a major accident or death. Do the right thing Hyundai and issue a recall for this issue!!.

30 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2014

Fuel light was on. Filled gas tank. Fuel light remained on and fuel gage did not rise to full. Check engine light came on. After driving 20+ miles the fuel gage rose but drops rapidly. The fuel light will go on and the check engine light goes on and off. Hyundai dealer says they know it is an issue but no recall has been issued. The danger arises if I fail to reset the mileage and should run out of gas without warning.

31 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2014

2009 Hyundai Santa Fe experiencing wild fuel gage spikes, reads e when tank is full, then reads 1/2 full and is all over the map. . Hyundai is aware of the problem but has not indicated a recall. . This item should be places on recall as it is a hazard, to the driver, occupants and others on the road. Gauge could read full when it's actually empty resulting in traffic accidents. . This issue also results in a check engine light trigger, causing failures at inspection.

32 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

The fuel indicator on our Santa Fe is only accurate for the first 1/4 of a tank, after that it indicates the tank is empty and the "check engine" light appears. We have to keep track of our mileage in order to know when we are low on fuel. Very annoying to have to do this. What if the "check engine" light is on for another reason? how will we know? this is an on-going problem with Hyundai, who has not addressed the issue, and it will cost $300-$700 to repair! we are thinking of selling our Santa Fe but we know we can't sell it with a "check engine" light on! Hyundai should own up to this problem and recall their vehicles. We have owned 5 Hyundai's in the past 15 years and this will make us reconsider ever buying another.

33 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2014

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that the fuel gauge was showing an empty reading when the fuel tank was half full. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the fuel sensors were defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 95,800 and the current mileage was 96,215.

34 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

Engine light came on and then fuel warning light came on even though I had a least 1/2 tank of gas. Filled up my gas tank, all lights were out. When I had approximately 1/2 tank again, the engine and fuel lights came on. I brought my car to my mechanic and was told the 2 fuel sensors need to be replaced at a cost of over $350. 00. Upon online researching, I learned that there are many others who are experiencing the same problem. I feel that because this is happening to other Hyundai owners, it is a problem that Hyundai needs to repair at no cost to the owner of these vehicles. In my case, I need to be reimburse the cost of the repair.

35 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2013

I have taken this vehicle to the dealership 11 times in the last 2 1/2 years trying to fix an issue where I randomly cannot put fuel in the car. The nozzles click off as if the tank is full, usually after pumping a few gallons. The dealership says they have replaced every single piece of the fuel system, but it continues to have issues and they're not sure why. Sometimes it works fine; sometimes pumping gas slowly helps and I'm able to fill up; sometimes nothing I do works and I have to drive off and try again another day. The check engine light has only come on once, with the first repair attempt in 2013. Since then, there are no warning lights, just the inability to pump gas. I've tracked mileage to make sure it's not just an issue with the fuel gauge showing as being emptier than it really is. Unless this SUV is getting 60+ mpg, it's not the gauge. I generally start attempting to fill up when I get down to half a tank of gas, because I never know how much gas I'll be able to put into the vehicle at a time.
