39 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/18/2024

I was driving on the freeway and there were not any cars in front of me or next to me, and my emergency break went on. My car jerked hard and could have caused a very serious accident if there was a car behind me. This happened two times during the same drive. I took it to the dealer and they told me there was nothing they could do since there was no codes shown. I am very nervous to drive this car now.

40 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

On interstate 95 in virginia, multiple times, going ~68-70 mph the vehicle automatically applied the brakes causing an unsafe situation with a momentary loss of control. Multiple times this has happened with no other vehicle or obstacle in front of, or beside me. It has happened now for no reason causing the loss of control of the vehicle. We have reported this to Hyundai and they cannot find any fault code, or record of the incident. Our understanding is that this is a widespread problem with this vehicle and system, but also includes other vehicles with the same technology. We are afraid this may end up causing serious damage, injuries or fatality(ies). We have asked Hyundai to turn the system off, and they have refused. They have no solution, and we have spent time and money on this.

Issues did not, so 4/5 dealer had vehicle picked up, loaner left, and they would fix in 2 days. Issues still not fixed on 4/8. They have no idea how to fix and they want us to accept vehicle as-is. Was told this morning by dealer staff that there has been multiple occurrence of this issue and not fixed.

46 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/10/2024

Occurred on March 10, 2024 while travelling in the middle lane of a 3-lane highway just west of raleigh, nc and heading west. The emergency brake light came on, the car stopped suddenly and my head shook from side to side. This could have been a major accident if the traffic wasn’t light. I do not tailgate and there were at least 6-8 car lengths between me and the car in front. No cars on either side. There was no beeping warning from the vehicle about being too close to other vehicles before the car stopped. I pressed on the gas pedal and the car moved forward. The weather was about 50-60 degrees, dry road and sunny. Next step: called Hyundai customer care on March 12, 2024 and was advised to bring the vehicle in for inspection and correction. Took the car into the Hyundai autonation dealership in buford, GA, where the vehicle was purchased. They found nothing wrong. Note: have researched this problem online and found multiple instances of the same occurrence. See the following online: emergency braking system activates intermittently | Hyundai Santa Fe forums.

The automatic emergency braking system engaged (the red warning flashed on the dashboard and tone beeped) while I while driving on the highway at 65 mph, in clear weather conditions. This engagement caused the steering wheel to jerk violently left and right, almost causing the car to fishtail on the highway. There was a concrete barrier next to the lane I was driving in, and this was a very dangerous situation. Luckily, there was no car in the lane next to me.

Phantom emergency braking occurred on two separate occasions a few months apart while traveling at 50-60 mph for no reason. Almost rear ended. Flashing red zigzag alert stating “emergency braking”. 52 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/22/2023

My wife and I are the owners of a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe sport VIN 5xyzwdla3dg066964. In September of 2023 we received a recall notice on this vehicle - NHTSA recall number 23v-651; Hyundai recall number 251 dated September 22, 2023. Since receiving this notice I have checked numerous times with our local dealership and online with Hyundai to see if there is any progress on this recall. As of January 15, 2024 there is no change in the status of this recall. I am disappointed that no remedy is available. Beyond the safety issues, we have been parking our car outside as directed and as a result, our vehicle, which has always been garaged, is now subject to weather risks as well as the very real risk (in our area) of pests damaging the wiring and other parts. If there is anything that NHTSA can do to spur some action on the resolution of this recall, I would greatly appreciate it.

53 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/18/2023

On several occasions now the vehicle is engaging the automatic emergency braking system for no reason. Several times I have been driving on the highway without a car in front of me and it engages the automatic emergency braking system. This has caused me to almost be rear-ended because my vehicle slammed on the brakes. I have almost been in several accidents now due to the automatic emergency braking activating for no reason and cars almost hitting me.

54 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/14/2023

April 2022 my 2020 one, Honda Santa Fe started rolling backwards in rolling to a flagpole as I was walking away from the car. I tried to to catch up with the car. It had my family inside screaming. But I was unable to stop it from slimming into the fireplace. I let Hyundaiusa know. They recommended that I take the car to the dealer. They promised to reimburse me for rental car after the diagnostic came back. They found nothing wrong with the car and never paid for the reimbursement now September 2023. Same thing just happened again. I was in mcdonald's drive through and I drop my debit card so I got out to get my debit card. I got out of the car and had to close the door and as I bend down at sensed the car start starting to pull away. The car once again started running away for me. I was outside the vehicle, but I was able to jump in the car and apply the brake before it slammed into mcdonald's. I have made a police report. And I have a witness from mcdonald's that saw the incident. I had already reached out to the attorney general's office about the first time the car rolled away from me in April 2022. They claim that my Hyundai found nothing wrong with the diagnostics. There was no argument I can make except for being called a liar. The mechanic did a little demonstration showing us how the safety mechanism in the Santa Fe makes it impossible for the car to roll out of park if the doors open or. How it's impossible. Even if the door is open, it shifts back to park. If you hit the drive button with the doors open it automatically shifts to park. . . So there's supposed to be "no way. The car can shift out of park into drive or neutral. " it rolled away in 2022 April, and it did it again September 2023.

55 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/07/2023

On several occasions, the automatic emergency braking system engages even though there is no evidence of a dangerous situation or imminent crash. It usually occurs during highway driving or at speeds over 40mph. In each case the brakes engage, the steering tightens, the aebs notification appears on the dashboard and an alarm sounds. After a few seconds, the brakes and steering return to normal. This occurs even when there is no evident traffic issues. I googled the situation and found that other drivers of this car have had similar problems. . Read more...

56 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/17/2023

While driving I could not accelerate over 35 mph on the freeway this has happened at 10 times now. While driving my parking brake will come on causing me to stop immediately. This is a huge safety risk not only to me but the people in my car or driving around me. My vehicle has been brought to dealerships multiple times and nothing has been done they can’t find the problem.

59 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/24/2023

I was driving on the highway when my car all of a sudden started to beep and told me it was activating the emergency brake. I was driving safely and was not at risk of a collision. The car slowed slightly. Just as soon as the emergency brake warning popped up, it was gone. It was terrifying for the car to slow down while driving 60 mph on the highway.

60 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/15/2023

Upon braking hard and suddenly due to being cutoff on the interstate, it felt as if the antilock brakes did not properly engage but rather grabbed/grinded/scraped. Only when I let off the brake did they disengage. This happened the first time within 2 months of owning the car and with less than 2k miles on it, at highway speeds (65-70 mph) and this sensation has happened probably 4 times in the 7 months I have owned the car under various scenarios of stopping quickly. In addition, it recently happened when driving 25-30 mph and coming to a normal stop approaching a stop sign - where it felt as if the brake on the front passenger tire grabbed/grinded/scraped (but not on the 3 other tires). I have taken the car back for inspection at the dealer twice, neither time have they found any issues. In addition, one evening the stability control light flickered, sounded as if the dash was frying/sizzling with no reason - roads were not wet, no leaves, grass or other debris, etc. And speed was 25-30 - this happened twice within 3 miles. Dealer found no issue with car after performing visual inspection of wiring, check of system for code errors, nor driving test to reproduce issue. Had the brakes failed, I could have been in an accident causing serious harm to me/my passengers or whomever I could have hit. I believe the abs system needs to be replaced or reprogrammed but the dealer refuses to acknowledge a problem exists. Online forums indicate similar (and worse) issues, also with people stating they cannot get a dealer to resolve their problems. This is a serious malfunction of either the electric or braking system in some capacity and should be fixed before people are severely injured or killed.

61 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/28/2023

There were 2 instances where my vehicle stopped. Once I was driving 15mph and it said “put car in park”. The 2nd, I was driving 45mph and the vehicle said “step on the brake to start car”. I have also had 2 instances where my odometer just keeps going up and down. He 2nd instance, the car was making a ticking noise and hazard along with other lights were flashing.

62 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/28/2023

All lights that come on when you first start the vehicle stay on. Abs, forward collision, rear collision, side mirror check, down hill brake, etc. The brakes and brake pedal would lock up when attempting to brake. Pedal stays locked but the wheels didn’t seem too. Brake system wouldn’t respond to pumping the brakes the pedal stayed frozen. It could have caused me a serious accident.

63 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/22/2023

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle experienced phantom braking with the emergency braking message displayed. Additionally, the vehicle lost motive power while driving. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and had the vehicle towed to the dealer; however, no failure was found. 64 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/20/2023

Since I have had the car, five months, there have been three incidents of the car braking to a stop suddenly and unexpectedly while I am driving. At no time were there other cars near me; I was not in danger of hitting anything or anyone as the road was clear. The stops were jarring and upsetting as I could not discern a reason for these sudden stops. I feel it is very dangerous to stop in the middle of the street without warning.

65 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/13/2023

The accident took place on February 13 at approximately 7:40 a. M. My wife (the primary driver of the vehicle) had just dropped my son off at school and was pulling the vehicle into our garage as she has done at least four times a day since we purchased it in February 2022 for use as our primary family vehicle. She pulled into the garage, came to a complete stop, pressed the “park” button and confirmed that the vehicle was in park, and removed her foot from the brake. The vehicle then lurched forward and collided with a storage cube adjacent to our garage wall, causing extensive damage to both the front end of the vehicle and the garage/dining room wall. Within minutes of the accident, I contacted temecula Hyundai (our local dealership and service center), informed the service manager of what had just happened, and asked them how they wanted me to proceed given the fact that the malfunction was a warranty issue. They directed me to handle the accident through my insurance company. I specifically asked whether the vehicle needed to be preserved in place and not driven in order to maintain the scene and/or vehicle for investigation, and they said no. Nevertheless, we brought the vehicle to Hyundai that day to have it inspected and computer diagnostics run, since I suspected both might be necessary. They said the computer likely wouldn't capture this type of issue. We waited several weeks for our assigned Hyundai case manage (tracy) to contact us with further instructions (which never happened, despite several requests for her and/or a supervisor to contact me), but eventually followed our insurance company’s instructions to take the vehicle to caliber collision to proceed with repairs, which were completed on March 30. We are still waiting for Hyundai corporate to address the issue.

66 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/14/2023

I bought this lemon on 1/14/2023. The front collision detection doesn't brake to avoid collision. The emergency brake will engage on it's own, and it has to be manually disengaged. The parking assist feature will automatically disengage and is unable to engage it. The middle seat in the back seat headrest obstructs a major portion of the rear window, obstructing the driver's view. It is not the headrest pictured in the owner's manual. It has been in the shop twice. It has been in the shop for 10 days and counting of the 34 days I have owned this lemon of a vehicle.

67 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/22/2022

I purchased this SUV new and noticed an issue with the automatic intermittent wipers. The dealership has replaced the windshield sensor and issue is now unreliable at best. Service department told me to simply wipe the sensor off or pour water onto the sensor to get the wipers to work. That seems to work for about 3 wipes and then stops again. Also, the driver seat changes position by itself while driving, and the advanced cruise control failed to provide any braking and almost caused me to rear end a stopped car in freeway traffic. Additionally the advanced braking system does not work at all. . . I had the salesman check the settings and they are turned on, but do not provide any braking function. The alert system does provide a warning if a car turns a corner in front of me, but fails to take any action.

68 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/08/2022

I am concerned about the length of time this recall is taking. My dealership made an appointment for March 15, 2023 and told me it is just to look at it and decide if they need to order the part. This does not sound safe. If something happens between now and then can I hold them responsible. I have made the effort. Can I go to a regular mechanic to have this fixed.

69 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/21/2022

I was pulling out of a sidestreet and realized a car was coming and used the brake. The automatic braking system activated and violently stopped the car. I was only going about 5 miles an hour but the tremendous force from the braking system caused my rotator cuff and my bicep to tear. It cost me thousands to pay for surgery and physical therapy. I am very worried about all the injuries that this system causes. I have since had the dealership turn it off. I can not risk being injured like that because the car thinks that there will be a collision when I know that my manual braking was sufficient. There was no chance of any accident. I had Hyundai (case # 20962390) inspect the car & they claim (after 4 different inspections) that there is no issue with the system. They also claimed that it wouldn't activate at 5mph but I know that is not true. So if it works correctly, how many people are injured? before you mandate that the car stop at 65mph, you need to gather more info on how many injuries have occurred.

70 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/12/2022

While driving the crash avoidance emergency braking came on out of nowhere, and the steering locked up. I was driving on a straight and level roadway with no vehicles in front of me when suddenly the whole dash lit up with warning lights and the car, a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe, came to a emergency stop, the steering wheel was shaking and wouldn't turn. This was the second time this happened. The first time on 09/29/22 I called the car dealer and was told that "they knew of the problem and that there was no remedy". This is extremely dangerous, both times it happened while I was driving on a highway at a steady speed, thankfully the roadway was dry if it had been raining I would have probably crashed.
