Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Santa Fe based on all problems reported for the Santa Fe.
Driving Santa Fe at 55mph and it slowed to a stop. Transmision was out of gear and would not re-engage. Can not drive vehicle now as it will not go into gear.

Vehicle hesitates when pulling out in traffic from a turn or stop like it's not in gear momentarily. Very dangerous, please fix before someone is killed. Also I have only 2100 miles on the car and I noticed the paint has chips all over the hood, front bumper, quarter panels. I don't know if Hyundai is using very cheap clear coat or if it's just too thin, but at this rate the paint will be gone in a years time. I own a 2011 sorento (bought new) that has less chips on it. Come on Hyundai fix these issues or get your cars out of the USA. All brands have issues but it's how you resolve them that matters.

Turned car on, there was a bang (as if getting rear ended). Put car in reverse- car does not show being in gear. Start backing up, there is another loud shift, car slows down, and then goes in reverse. Put car in park, turn off, restart, car starts normally and gets into gear. Happened two more times in same week. Last time huge crash sound as if getting rear ended really hard.
Dear nhsta - my Santa Fe had a malfunction at 65 mph that causes the car to abruptly slow down and run in only third gear. This is a huge distraction to the driver and could easily cause an accident. The codes are p0121 and p0733 which have to do with a throttle/accelerator position sensor and a third gear ratio mismatch. I believe the way this works is the accelerator position sensor sends a signal to the electronic throttle system module which activates an ets motor on the throttle body which opens/closes the throttle butterfly damper based on a computed error signal. Upon researching this on Hyundai forums it was very apparant that this malfunction is very common and very dangerous. I searched the current recalls and this is not one of the two recalls I could find for this vehicle. But in 50% of the cases I read about it appeared that either the accelerator sensor or throttle sensor is a common failure. I really think this should be investigated. There are also some other items that can cause these sensors to see this mismatch and give the engine/transmission the fault code which causes the car to either go into "limp" mode or single gear mode. Although both are at different speeds it basically limits the car to a maximum rpm and causes it to either run in one gear or not shift above a gear, for example 3rd gear into overdrive. This seems to be a common fault that is extremely dangerous when running at or near highway speeds due to the unexpected nature of the event and the speed change and noise it can cause thus surprising the driver which may cause them to stop or pull over unexpectedly. Other malfunctions that can cause this are mass air flow sensor, fuel injector o-ring faulty and leaky intake manifolds among others. This serious issue that should be investigated and redesigned or repaired on these vehicles.

Vehicle hesitates and has no forward motion for perhaps 2-3 seconds. This happens when driving after slowing down and then accelarating, then backing off again. This has happened at least a dozen times over the years I have owned the vehicle. The risk is that you can not move to get out of the way of traffic. City driving, on and off the throttle most of the time during a slow speed left turn. Transmission appears to go into natural because it does not know what gear to go into, suspect it is a software issue/ driving style as wife does not have the same problem . Local dealer was provided information on several occasions, they could not duplicate the problem. Issue still exists. Comments on invoices: 100371 / 101673 / hycs414425.
The contact owns a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact was driving 35 mph when the gear shifter would not move into gear, causing the vehicle to stall in the middle of traffic. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who stated there were no recalls and any repairs would be at the contact's expense. The failure mileage was 107,000.

The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving 20 mph and attempting to merge into traffic, the vehicle hesitated and made a loud noise. The contact stated that the automatic transmission appeared to fail to shift gears. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred ever since the vehicle was purchased in 2010. The vehicle was taken to hudson Hyundai (977 communipaw Ave, jersey city, NJ 07304, (866) 710-6765), but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The contact continued to drive the vehicle as the failure progressed over the years. While driving to the dealer, the failure occurred at least six times. The contact stated that diagnostic testing could not find an error. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was still under warranty and no failure could be found. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
This vehicle (2003 Hyundai Santa Fe) started having transmission problems just be for the warranty expired (100,000 miles), but we were told at the dealer that the warranty did not cover the power train system. So we paid to have some work done. But just today we woke up and went out to use the vehicle, and it will not go in gear, will not in neutral so we can move it or push it. It's just locked up, (fluid leaves are ok) if this were to happen to any one with this kind of vehicle in traffic it could be traffic problem. I do know others who own this kind of vehicle and do not have any problems, but I also know of one individual that has had transmission problems with theirs. So I'm just concerned on if I am the only person with this problem or if their are others, and why if they offer a 100,000 mi. Warranty dose it not cover the drive train? this dose not make sense to me. One very unhappy vehicle owner. P. S. This vehicle is registered to my wife, and her llc.
Consumer noticed that the car would not change gears, instead it would stay in third gear and the car would not run, and when it did, it would run very slowly, dealer informed consumer that the transmission computer needed to be replaced.
