Hyundai Sonata owners have reported 465 problems related to seat belt (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Sonata based on all problems reported for the Sonata.
1. I purchased this vehicle in 2016 and I have had my rear brake lights repaired several times because the rear tail lights continue to go out, this happens regularly. There is no warning lights on the dash to indicate an issue. The only way I learned that my brake lights don't work properly is another motorist driving behind me and almost rear ending me. I have had the rear brake lights repaired by the dealership before. My brakes always smell like burning rubber after driving having me to believe that the lubricant for the brake pads aren't working. 2. The dashboard lights also periodically blinks out without warning. After a few moments it will illuminate again. 3. My seatbelts sometimes doesn't tighten up. I have to pull them several times for them to catch and return after the seatbelt isn't in use.

Multifunction box is in the steering column that controls your lights, signals, I put my turn signal on right or left at night and my lights go out,but they come back on. Also I have zero warning lights on my dashboard for when something happens it let's you know, well I have none. Hyundai of California says it's not unsafe. It should be a recall because it's a thousand dollars for update. .

The drivers seat belt does not engage. The engine has been burning oil, misfiring, and even after thousands in repairs was returned to me by the dealership with continued misfiring. When returning the car back to the dealer service center days later after hurricane helene, the car continued to misfire and became so overheated the engine light was flashing. Upon calling for a tow, I attempted to raise the hood for the driver to locate the car, but the hood was so hot it burned my hand. The engine was so hot, I believe it was about to catch fire and would have had I not been able to pull over so quickly. Had I been driving on the interstate, I have no doubt this car would have been on fire within minutes.
Driver seatbelt doesn’t click and takes tremendous effort and time to get the belt to click into the holder. This is not safe and needs to be replaced ASAP. Afraid the seatbelt will come unclicked if a wreck occurs.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 20 mph, several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated while attempting to make a right turn, the steering wheel seized, and the electrical system became inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) nor 18v137000 (seat belts, air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
My seatbelt in the front seat does not work effectively. My airbag light is on recall 169 anchor pretensioner inspection is the recall I see that is associated with my seatbelt recall 174 airbag control unit is the recall that I see associated with the airbag light both recalls say they are completed. I called the Hyundai dealership and they said reach out to the manufacturer because there are no open recalls on my car. Both are safety concerns that I hope can get addressed.

Seat belts will not recoil. This is a very unsafe situation.
Airbag light came on. Car is in otherwise perfect shape (red flag). Brought to Hyundai dealer. Was told it was a short somewhere on front passenger side. But it will cost $250 to figure out where. Then possibly over $1000 to fix it!! upon researching it I found many complaints on same issue on otherwise normal good condition Sonata’s. Clearly they used inferior components designed to fail. Similar to their stealable cars (with a usb cable) I’m sure you’re fermi liar with. They hid that until tic tok put out videos showing how to. They had to fix it due to owners auto insurance going up (way up). I can’t afford to repair this pressing safety issue. Hyundai should be held responsible for using knowingly faulty parts in their air bag system then charging customer large $ just to make an otherwise perfectly running car safe to operate. Oh, then they said they’d offer me a “loaner” till fixed. But their “loner” costs $50 per day!! that’s a rental not a loaner.

Seatbelt does not recoil.
My car airbag light came on. I called the dealership about the remedy that was already recalled under campaign number 18v137000 because my last visit I got told by the dealership that my acu was bad for the car and that it was going to cost me upwards of $2000 to replace and the dead was no recall on my vehicle and then called corporate and they had told me that this had been taken care of back in 2016 when I did not on the vehicle this time in the second owner and that basically they would not cover to fix this issue and that any warranty that was extended ran out when I only had purchased the vehicle in November 2020 so now they are unwilling to fix the issue because they had stated that it was already previously fixed with the previous owner and then I could either basically pay to get it fixed or they weren’t gonna do anything about it I feel my safety at risk because in the event of crash airbags will not deploy and basically that they would not fix the problem even though it is under a national recall, and my car was manufactured within the manufacturing dates of the recall I do not feel safe driving this vehicle, and I also do not feel that I have to pay for that has been nationally recalled.
My 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2 recalls that Hyundai are refusing to fix. My engine has been consuming oil since 10/15/2023. 2-3 quartz oil has to be put in the car every 5 days. Some of the recalls were satisfied on 11/15/2023. I took my car south shore Hyundai located at 360 sunrise hwy, valley stream, NY 11581 on 1/4/2024 they are refusing to replace the engine . My car was under warranty at the time of the recall. However, I never received a letter to notify me of the recall. Everything the recall states my engine has been doing. I reached out to the corporate office with no resolution. Hyundai says I have to be the original owner which is absurd. After careful research I see where they have replaced vehicles similar to this nature free of charge after consumers hired a lawyer, which I can't afford at the moment. My 23 year old daughter uses the car for work and I fear for her safety. I am replacing the fuel injectors and spark plugs today as suggested by the dealer. I am asking for help in getting the engine approval for replacement. Thank you.
The passenger seatbelts do not tighten when there is a hard break. My engine is also consuming oil.
I was the owner of a 2018 Sonata until I was t-boned and the car was totaled. I started to make a left turn into a school parking lot when the engine kind of stalled or more like stuttered and did not go forward as usual. The oncoming car then struck me before I was completely in the driveway. My vehicle was totaled as was the other one. Fortunately no one was on the passenger's side where the other car hit me. However the seat belt did not engage which resulted in me slamming very hard into the steering column. This resulted in bruised on my right side which cleared up in several weeks, but, unfortunately, I received a heart contusion on my left side which is still causing shortness of breath. Hyundai will not acknowledge a problem with the engine or the seat belt.
The contact owns a 2021 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, his son complained that the seat belt had tightened and locked and that he was unable to adjust the seat belt. Upon arriving at his destination, the contact stated that attempts to remove the seat belt had failed and the contact decided to cut the seat belt. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 26,450.

I brought this car brand new at abc hunduia in las vegas nv I now like in NY and my engine making a loud winning noise as I steer and the seat drivers side does not retract back into place . I just spent over 3 grand to fix other issues a/c cost over 3 grand but they never fixed what I requested. Please help me thank you martin r romeo.
My brake lights constantly go out new bulbs don't work either. . . It sems to be a malfunction in the wiring for the lights. The seatbelt on driver side will not latch no matter what. All electrical has issues, dash will go in and out as well as radio and heating/ac lights.
My vehicle is experiencing several recall issues. The seat belt in driver seat randomly pops unlocked which is very dangerous while driving, the headlights and brakes lights go out once a month due to some electrical issues with the vehicle, the tire bearing clocks when the vehicle is turning.
Drivers side front seat belt will not retract and is loose when the seat belt is in use while operating the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 18v137000 (seat belts, air bags). The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the recall repair was performed. Recently, the contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the warning light was cleared; however, the light returned soon after. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle had to be repaired out-of-pocket. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty and a case was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 262,000.
Oil leak.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that all the rear row seat belts did not buckle as intended and water would leak from the front passenger side air conditioner. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
The front seat belts are not functioning; they do not retract, nor do they lock when quickly pushed. They both do lock into the buckle, but that's it. I checked the recall status for such a problem and found that many years and models of Hyundai Sonata's seatbelts were recalled for exactly this same reason; however, this particular year of Sonata was not, even though it is the same issue. In late February/early March, I contacted our local dealer in reno, to no avail, and then contacted the national customer support for Hyundai. This was forwarded up the ladder and received a case number: 20893920. We were asked to take it to our local dealer for a diagnostic review, which was completed on March 22. The result, showing the exact same malfunction, was then sent to the Hyundai case worker. Numerous phone calls and emails to her have gone unanswered since then. Meanwhile, we are stuck with an unsafe vehicle, which has the same seatbelt safety issue that resulted in a recall of over one million Hyundai vehicles. Hyundai states the seatbelts are past the warranty period. Seven years is how long they think seatbelts should last?.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that she had initially received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 18v137000 (seat belts, air bags). The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the recall repair was performed. The contact stated that one year after the recall repair was performed, the air bag warning light illuminated. The contact linked the failure to the recall. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was not related to recall and that the at vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 92,714.
Drivers side seat belt strap does not retract back when removed and has faulty latch which sometimes pops out. Dealer told us that because the car had over 60,000 miles on it that we would be responsible for payment to replace the pretensions and other internal parts plus the latch. This car was bought new in 2019 and had only been involved in one accident which the seat belt was not used due to the fact that the car was parked when it was struck. Since this is a safety issue which could result in my death or serious injury in the event of a vehicle accident I am taking a chance evey time I drive this vehicle. The approximate cost according to Hyundai would be around $1800. 00 - $2000. 00. I consider this a manufacturer defect that Hyundai should replace and be responsible for the cost. They refuse to fix this issue unless I pay for the repair. I never heard of a seat belt having a mileage cut off at any amount of mileage. Please advise me if you can enforce safety defect repair to be paid for by Hyundai. If you are not able to hold Hyundai liable I would appreciate any entity that you may know of that can make them replace for free the defective belt and latch. I'm afraid to drive this car without a working seat belt on the drivers side nor do I have the outrageous money for it to be repaired at my expense.
The car was involved in a front end collision going about 35 mph. The collison was enough to bust the radiator and likely total the car. The entire front end is heavily damaged. There was a driver and front seat passenger in the vehicle at the time of collision. The seat belts did not lock nor did any airbag deploy.
Driver's seat belt takes 3 to 5 times for it to engage. A recall was done for the front driver's seat seatbelt. Campaign recall was done in December 2017 at chapman Hyundai phoenix.
The driver's seatbelt does not retract. The engine is burning oil.
