In early may 2025 while driving around 40mph, I heard a very loud pop which startled me. Pulled over and looked back and noticed my backseats were push up out of place. I attempted to put the seat back into place but it wouldn’t fit into the latch anymore. The framing underneath the seats looked pretty damaged so I took it to a local mechanic. After doing some research, he found information for a check valve/fuel tank recall (service campaign 9b1) and then advised me to go a Hyundai dealership. I attempted to take it to the dealership, whom sent me away after I advised them of what happened. I came back the next day asking them to take a look at while informing them about the recall that could be related. Later that evening, they called and said the issue was directly related to the recall and the repairs would be covered. My car was in their possession for from 5. 12. 25 to 7. 25. 25 without any updates or instructions on what is happening. I was told they’re waiting to hear back from Hyundai manufacturer on how to proceed. They returned my car to me on 7. 25. 25 stating everything was repaired. On 7. 31. 25 they called me back stating my tank needs to be replaced and bring the car back ASAP. My car was again being repaired and was returned to me on 8. 25. 25. Now my vehicle will not start randomly sometimes. At this point, I’m under the impression my vehicle is no longer safe as all the issues I’ve been facing are fuel related.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact became aware that the frame on the front driver's seat was cracked. The contact inspected the seat. The contact lifted the cushion and became aware that the bolts were cracked. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,458.
My wife and son experienced a terrible situation on the way home from training. They had to stop at the nearest gas station due to the vehicle showing extremely low gas in the tank during a short drive home. The fuel gauge initially showed about half a tank but drastically dropped on the way home. They stopped at a gas station to add fuel but during the process, fuel starting spewing out of the tank. The vehicle was scheduled to be dropped off at a later date for an open recall (service campaign 9b1). I called the dealership and told them I needed to get the vehicle in right away due to the incident. After bringing the vehicle to Hyundai, they told me that the fuel tank exploded causing the tank to swell all the way around. Because the tank is located under the rear seat, we constantly heard air coming in due to the rear seat not seating properly. The check engine also was on and we smelled fuel while driving the vehicle. Hyundai representatives has been avoiding my calls to the point where I had to go in person for an update. Apparently, a district manager had to come inspect the vehicle to advise the dealership how to write up the request to send to corporate.
Heated seat burned through causing smell and potential burn of driver.
I had the check engine light come on about 4 times in my 2020 Hyundai Sonata 1. 6l this year in 2024. I took the car to a technician to get looked at each time it came on. The codes and bulletins kept pointing to fuel system issues. Each time, every service tech said it was a small issue and claimed to fix the issues. The final time a tech seen it lifted the rear seat and found out that the gas tank expanded and the back seat buckled up. The backseat metal frame is bent and messed up. I was flagged down by several drivers ?that noticed gasoline leaking from my driverside rear. My child and I were in dang? er and had to pull on the side of a major highway and stay several hours until someone picked us up. The problem has been confirmed by the hyuandi service center. They said another vehicle experienced this same issue. I was in fear for my life and my child's life because it could have caught fire and/or exploded.
Took a trip to nashville so I left memphis Saturday morning hole on the road heading to nashville I was at least 30 minutes fork the city my car began to jerk very bad suddenly my file light came on so I stopped at a gas station the file light came on telling me I needed gas the had was on the e but my mileage to e said 117miles. So I was like ok that’s weird after I put gas in my car I got back on the road my gas hand went from full to half way and I was not even on the road for 40 minutes so as we get closer to nashville my car starts jerking very bad I hear a noise that sounded like a bag or a piece of paper being crumbled up I turn around to find my rear seat up in the air I knew it was not normal at all looks like it was a lot of pressure for the frame of a car to stand up like that I definitely knew something was wrong when that happened I instantly started to smell gas very loud smell of gas I then start to do my research and I see kia’s and Hyundais are dealing with gas tank expansions so at this point I am scared for my life I’m in my car and I’m dealing with a issue like this. I instantly call my dealership and schedule to have my car towed to the dealership out in nashville. They called me that Monday confirming the gas take had expanded and caused a significant amount of floor damage to my vehicle I am currently waiting trying to see what is Hyundai going to do about this issue that is my only transportation and having to deal with this then find another way back home has been very stressful and just to know that I could have lost my life in that car is even more traumatic.
Fuel tank has expanded to the point that my vehicle is deemed not safe to drive. As pressure in the tank is unable to be stabilized. Only had the car for about 70 days since the date of purchase. Repairs are about $3900. In short as told by the dealership service department, my car could blow up at any time. This is not safe, at all.
Hello, I have Hyundai Sonata 2023. The fuel tank of this car is expanded on [xxx]. I have never heard about this issue to any cars. I took my car to dealership they said they don’t know why this happened and they said they cannot fix it, my car at the dealership more than a month. I have created a case with Hyundai corporate office in CA, it’s been a month since this case was created and I could reach out to my case manager only twice for this period of time. They are keep saying they are working on it, but no results they don’t even look at my car. Today I barely could reach my case manager and she told me that this is not under warranty and I will need to fix it out of my pocket. When I bring the car to the dealership they told me this not under warranty since warranty was up to 60k miles, I have 90k I asked them to fix it and I will pay but they said they don’t know how to fix it. Today I have researched and found that this issue is really common among kia k5 and Hyundai Sonata’s 2021 2024, I will provide a link here: [xxx] please check this link and you can see that most of the cars fuel tanks are expanded and back seats popped up. I have same exact problem. Kia asked drivers to inspect the cars with this issue and they said they will fix it for free since this is fuel tank defect. But what should I do with my Hyundai Sonata. I have same exact issue as you see at the link I have provided. I had powertrain dtc po451 since March of this year dealership said just check if gas cap is on properly, but this caused this issue I see Hyundai will not help me it will almost 2 month I don’t have my car and I am still paying for it, please let me know what I can do thank you! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

It looks like the fuel tank has expanded. My back seats are now lifted & will not push down.
A week before my gas tank expanding I heard a loud popping noise. When driving from nc to DC, my gas tank refused to take gas and my car immediately went to empty. I was stranding on the highway and has my 2020 Hyundai towed to the Hyundai dealership in chesterfield, va. They told me that my gas tank expanded and my back seats had popped out of place.
Driving 55mph on highway car slows down and make a pop nose and back seat comes up and I start to smell gas.
An independent service center advise us that the gas tank had expanded which could have put my family at risk if exploding or catched on fired. This happend on June 15th 2024 while driving, a sudden explosion coming from the back of the car was heard. Little after the explosion like sound we perceived as if air was coming through the back as if we had a window rolled down. When pulled to check, I notice that the back seat was popped up. No warning on the car was giving prior to the incident. Will take car to Hyundai dealership to have it inspect by them and have a solution.
The drivers seat operation is going berserk. I can not get it to move at times and at other times it only partially operates. It also may do the opposite of what control direction I move it! I had to drive home today not being able to to the gas pedal well. . . Very dangerous.

While exiting the vehicle there was a loud pop from under the drivers seat. Upon inspection the left front weld attaching the drivers seat to the positioning bar to raise and lower the seat bottom had failed and separated completely. This causes the front seat bottom to sit at an angle and not fully attached to the structure of the car, causing a severe safety issue in the event of an accident as the driver is not properly aligned for the airbag, the seat belt no longer aligns correctly on the body, and there is a greater risk of full seat detachment in a collision or while simply driving.
Abs module stopped working and the abs module light is on. Car automatically brakes by its self sometimes or locks up at stop lights creating dangerous driving situations.
I am writing to report a safety issue with my 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The trunk is stuck closed and I am unable to open it using the key fob or the button on the trunk itself. Additionally, the button to fold down the rear seats is located inside the trunk, which makes it impossible to access the trunk from the rear seats. I have also tried using the keyhole on the trunk, but it does not work either. This is a serious safety issue that poses a risk to myself and others on the road. In the event of an emergency, I may need quick access to the trunk to retrieve necessary items or a spare tire, but due to the malfunction, I am unable to do so.

Took vehicle to independent Hyundai factory trained technician due to air bag light. Was advised this is due to failure of occupant classification system sensor in front passenger seat. This is related to NHTSA campaign 08v161000, but technician advised my VIN was not listed under this recall. Technician advised me to contact Hyundai due to the recall and inquire if my vehicle could be covered, since leaving unaddressed could cause injury or death during collision. Manufacturer is aware of issue due to previous recall cited above. Spoke with Hyundai customer service phone line on 12/13/2022 and informed of issue, asking if the recall would cover my vehicle even though my VIN was not indicated in the previous recall. Customer service advised this could not be done. Asked customer service to file complaint about known safety issue and was given case #20713402. Customer service advised I could pay for repairs out of pocket and receive refund if recall was later issued. Action requested: expand recall 08v161000 to include additional 2008 Hyundai Sonatas exhibiting same manufacturer defect which is a risk to public safety.

Left driver side rear and front headlamps would burn out, after time noticed the left headlamp flickering 9n and off while driving at night in auto mode, also inside dash lights dimming, also left driver side seat will not adjust, this is a hazzard for myself and others while driving at night, with lights malfunctioning, was pulled over by highway patrol, and given a warning to fix headlamp. Issue has not been inspected by anyone and the vehicle can be inspected upon request, no dash or warning lights have came on.
The powered driver seat returning from a reclined position can get stuck in the recline position for some unknown reason. The seat motor, electrical wiring system and the switch have all been examined and replaced and yet for some unknown reason it continues to occur. Two different mechanics thought it was the switch for the seat being faulty but its been replaced twice and still this issue can occur where the seat after reclining any amount the seat will remain in that recline position for an extended period of time (multiple days) and can if reclined completely, remain in the full reclined position unable to return in the direction so as to raise it to a normal seated position. The seat switch will only recline but will not return back to the seated position to any degree. All of the other swithces and buttons with the drivers side seat continue to remain operational and work even when the seated position direction does not function. To operate a vehicle in the fully reclined position is dangerous as you have no back support while driving, there is also no whiplash protection or support in the event of a collision. It can also impair the drivers ability to reach the pedals or operate the vehicle properly. It also makes the seat behind the driver unusable. Further adding to the danger the seat has no manual options and therefore is unable to be manually returned to the seated position, thus once it is reclined back it remains stuck in that position until the switch begins to function again or the seat is removed. There are no warning lamps or indicators and the seat continues to properly function in the recline direction. Only upon trying to return to a seated position is there any indication of an issue. This has happened at least 3 times in the past year. Repair shops have examined the electrical wiring and the switch and cant seem to keep it from happening.

The driver's seat lost a bolt and the seat was no longer bolted down at the back, although sitting on it would lower it. I took it to a mechanic and they re-attached the screw and bolt but were unable to do so in a way that the seat operates properly. It still lifts when I get out of the car and lowers when I sit down. This is available for inspection if needed. The safety concern is that in the event of an accident, the seat may detach from the base of the car. The problem has been reproduced by an independent service center. The work was done in Feb 2022. The vehicle hasn't been inspected by any others. There were no warnings or other symptoms before or after the event.
For no apparent reason and very little passenger usage the seat sensor for the passenger air bag is supposedly not working properly and if there is an accident the air bag may not deploy.
I took the car in for a recall/warranty repair on 3/28/2021. The part (seatbelt/airbag sensor/pre tensioner) has still not been delivered to the dealer so that they can repair the vehicle. The part being defective prevents the airbag sensor from operating correctly and, as such, the airbags will not work in the event of a collision. This car is my daily driver and has largely been parked idle for 12 months. For the entire year, I have been fighting with their corporate customer support team and there has been no progress whatsoever on securing the part. They have given me numerous dates for the part to arrive. None of them have been met. No new date has been provided. The dealer blames Hyundai corporate, Hyundai corporate blames the 'distribution centre' and so on. The car is unsafe with no airbags and there is no resolution in sight.

Dash cracking severely over airbags. . . Hyundai refuses to address the problem even though they had a prior recall for the same issue. The spiderweb cracking is severe enough I am concerned my airbags will deploy without warning. Leather in limited model seats cracks and disintegrates so badly the power motor and components are exposed and compromised.
Vehicle caught fire while parked and unoccupied. It seems as though the fire could have originated at the base of the driver's seat, causing damage to the interior of the vehicle and body.
The air bag sensor in my car is defective. This was already a recall by Hyundai, but for reasons I don't understand does not include my car and I believe it should have. It is the right make, model, and year the original recall included. Apparently the seatbelt tension adjuster is also involved in my case.
My mechanic advised me of airbag code b1448 and advised me he rad my VIN to check any open recalls. He stated my VIN is not in airbag recall related to this code but that there were aibag OCS codes on that model year which came up b1448 that were covered. I cobtacted Hyundai north America and went over with them a series of questions relating to the vehicle. Hyundai advised me that I may be covered by vehicle passenger OCS recall. Dealership refused to diagnose without a charge. Also tried to instead sell a battery despite being new one. Contscted Hyundai north America again and referred me out but stated while this is recall it doesnt apply to VIN. I am not going to deal with intermediary however, I chose to deal with you directly to resolve what personal mechanic is telling me is an absolute model year code recall thst just happened not to include my VIN.
A screw that connects the driver's seat to the rail and car frame came out on it's own over time. Car has been used in a normal manner. Discovered the issue when getting in and out of the car and the seat started rocking and wobbling. No pieces are broken.

Airbag light will not turn off. I have taken the car to two dealerships and they have not been able to fix the problem. The OCS is defective. I have had the car for 10 years and no one ever sits in the passenger seat. I do put groceries on the seat at times. I believe the problem is the same as the TSB campaign that was put out for 2006 -2008 Sonata. The campaign number is 083. How can I find out if my 2009 Sonata was manufactured in 2008? when the vehicle was returned from the first dealer the seatbelt light was flashing.

My vehicle rattles and knocks all the time. It has a little over 65000 miles and has done this for years. I have taken it to the dealership and told it supposed to sound like that. The car has no power what so ever climbing hills and my gas mileage keeps going down. I have heard this is a common problem but I want it fixed as I dont fee this car is reliable as it has quit running one time before because of this problem. Something needs to be done before someones car cuts off and causes an accident and someone get killed. It does this anytime you give the car throttle. The second thing is the poor stitching in the leather seats. My seats started coming apart at the seams and the dealer says its not covered under warranty but I purchased a full 10 year 100000 mile warranty. This is poor materials and workmashipl I drive the car about 14 days a month and it shouldn't already have a coming apart.
There is a recall #083 (08v161000) that is exactly my issue. The airbag light stays on and it was diagnosed as the passenger seat sensor that is causing the issue. The cost of repair is $1500. 00. Spoke with Hyundai and they advised that my car was not marked for recall. We have spoken with a number of junk yards thinking we could obtain a used seat to correct this issue. We have been advised that this issue is wide spread and they cannot keep seats in stock due to the seat sensor issue. I cannot pass my state inspection without this fix. I find it difficult to understand that my car is not covered by this recall. Please register this complaint and let me know if I have any other recourse.
