11 Power Train problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/08/2019

After stopping at a rest area on 2 separate occasions, the car refused to start and a message was displayed to check hev system. After repeated tries to start it the message disappeared and the check engine light came on. Eventually, the check engine light went off, the car seemed to be working properly and we resumed our trip. We took the car to the dealer and they checked for errors and found none. We are reluctant to put the car on any more trips out of town.

12 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/02/2019

2 major problems with this car. One is a brake issue and one is transmission issue I do have approximately 160k on the car now. The transmission issue goes back to when the car had approximately 40 to 50 k on it and was taken to dealer because of severe banging from one gear to another. . Periodically it has done this since then. . Dealer could not get it to do it. . And said it could be normal. . Car is well taken care of and now needs transmission. . Brakes have done wierd things. Once needed towing because of zero brakes, full hard pedal, no brake light on or any kind of warning. . Luckily I was in a slow drive thru. . Towed and parked car. . 2 days later . . Everything is good. . Bizarr at the least if not absolutely dangerous.

13 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/23/2019

Yesterday the car drove fine untill about an hour before I went home. Then it started with the bumping/jerking when switching from electric to gas. Worse than it has ever been. Then the revving started, more than usual, and wouldn't accelerate. Then it was like the throttle stuck. Got the revving noice, but the eco wasn't burried at red, for about 1/4 mile before I was able to pull over into a parking lot. Shut off the car. Restarted and drove 1 mile to home. Revved a few times in that period.

14 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

Suddenly gave warning while driving not drive hybrid system failure. Please call me at 510-432-9356.

15 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/15/2018

Major failure occurred. I was driving my car when I heard sharp bells ringing from the car dash. Check hybrid systems lights illuminated on dash. The car was in motion when it just stopped. I had no time to pull to the side of the road. I turned it off and on again. I was in the center of the road and it would not move. Good samaritan pushed my car to side of the road. The check brakes light came on. Then the car would not turn on at all. The car would not recognize the key pad light came on. Locks would not operate. The window was stuck in the open position. The internal car lights were on and would not go off. The key pad could not lock/unlock the car. Luckily this happened on a side road. 1 mile earlier I was on a freeway that had no shoulder. If it had happened there, it could have been catastrophic. Numerous systems failed. I took it to they dealer. They had to wait for the hybrid specialist. He said the transmission fluid was very dirty and ordered a new transmission. My question, why would check hybrid systems come on and so much electrical failure if it was the transmission. I have read in forums that this has happened to several other hybrid sonata owners. Even after the transmission repaired, I still feel very unsafe in the car now. If it had happened just 1 mile earlier, my car stopping immediately on the freeway with no shoulder could have caused a major accident and been life-threatening.

16 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/08/2018

This has been happening on a daily basis for at least the last 4 months, some days are worse than others. Seems like the trans computer cannot make up its mind to engage or disengage and create a 'power loss' or acceleration loss. The car then bucks and clunks for a few seconds until it figures out what its going to do. Happens in low engine temps, car has not reached 1/2 way temp for several months, always runs 1, 2, or 3 bars from cold, replaced thermostat, radiator fan stopped working and replaced that. Sometimes the car will over rev and then catch making the car lurch forward or backward. This happens usually at stop signs or stop lights, but the rpm have been buried at high while driving then drops rapidly.

17 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/27/2018

While trying to accelerate at freeway speeds (50-60mph), the "eco guage" revs up but the car will not accelerate - slows down in the middle of traffic. The oil pressure warning lamp flickers on and off as well. After the car is stopped and turned off, the car functions normally. Mechanics are unable to retrieve any codes from the system. The car has intermittantly dropped into this mode at least 10 times since we first experienced the problem in July 2018. The problem occurs at freeway speeds causing the car to rapidly decelerate in fast moving traffic with no advance warnings. This situation requires immediate evasive action to remove the car from high speed traffic lanes so it can be shut down and towed to the Hyundai dealer. My wife and I consider this a life-threatening situation as it has occurred in places such as the bay bridge (with no shoulder) and a lengthy underwater tunnel (again with no shoulder). We have taken it to the Hyundai dealer service shop four times. They have replicated the problem and have tried various repairs - replace transmission oil pump, replace inhibitor switch, install new auxilliary battery, and - finally - replacing the transmission. Even after the transmission replacement, the car shut down while the mechanic was test driving it and provided a code to replace the crankshaft position sensor. The mechanics still are not certain they have fixed the problem. It appears as if Hyundai is aware of the problem as their technical support staff have a protocol for repairing the car. Given the intermittant nature of the problem, the fact that it occurs at high speeds, and the potential danger of having your car rapidly decelerate on busy freeways, I think this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed by Hyundai. Attached is the original service record that describes the problem (date 8/6/18). The most recent occurrence was 11/27/18.

18 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/09/2018

First incident, Sunday, September 9, 2018. While driving, car suddenly flashed warning lights, with message pertaining to the battery. Car decelerated extremely rapidly and became harder to steer. Pulled car over out of street as it lost power. It stopped. Lights remained on. Turned car off and then turned it back on. It cranked up and could be driven as if the incident never happened. There were no warning lights or warning message when the car was restarted. Second incident, Monday, September 10, 2018. While driving the car to the dealership for diagnosis of the problem, the car suddenly lost power again, the warning lights flashed again, and again it became hard to steer. This time driver was not able to pull the car over; it stopped in the street. Driver turned the car off, then turned it back on and drove to the nearest service station. A tow truck was called and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership stated the vehicle did not register any code that they could detect. They had a technician drive it from work to home each day and the vehicle never gave any problem. They could not find any problem at all with the vehicle that required service or repair. Vehicle was picked up on Saturday, September 16, 2018. The dealership waived the diagnostic fee since they were not able to diagnosis a problem. The vehicle has been traded-in. The issue was reported to Hyundai motor corporation.

19 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/05/2018

For the second time in just over 3 months, the hybrid system failed (and displayed hybrid system failure / do not drive vehicle) on the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. There was no motoring to the wheels after complete stop. The first occurrence is reported in NHTSA report # 11100475 (may 29, 2018). The second occurrence was on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. This occurred while backing up. After towing, the Hyundai mechanic could not diagnose the problem, even though he tried to mimic the failure situation. Further, error code was not obtained due to automatic reset when vehicle restarted (poor firmware design?). This problem is intermittent and therefore hard to diagnose, especially without recoverable error codes. When problem occurs the driver must strive to get off the road safely and very promptly, since vehicle motoring is lost. Hyundai consumer affairs office is indifferent to the problem, because the vehicle is now functioning, though not truly repaired (vehicle "fixed" itself on reset). Hyundai consumer affairs has closed the problem report (second time in just over 3 months). This is a potentially dangerous problem, since the driver has to immediately stop the car at a safe spot, even if in high speed traffic.

20 Power Train problem of the 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

This event can happen at any time while driving and has happened numerous times during one short trip until I parked the car due to the danger of driving it. While driving, you get an alarm sound and dash indication and the car just dies. You then must pull over quickly and stop. While stopping in this condition, the brakes sound terrible like they are grinding horribly but do stop the car. If you push the button to shut off the car and then push it to restart, then the fault clears and the car drives normally until it occurrs all over again. My wife said it had been happening occasionally but never several times during one short trip. She had already taken it to the Hyundai dealer and was told that this was not covered under the powertrain warranty and that it was a hydrolic sensor in he the hydrolic pack that would be several thousand dollars to replace. They then assured her that the car was safe to drive. They later stated that they didn't know that the car was shutting off and that they thought that it was only a dash trouble light. This issue puts the driver and occupants in a dangerous situation as it happened to us several times while driving on the interstate. We parked the car after this one trip and started driving a backup car until we could get the prblem fixed. The car has less than 100,000 miles, but I believe that it has been an issue since about 36k miles. It started making a funny noise at that time but didn't affect the car in any way and the dealer assured us that this was normal for the car even though the new cars didn't make this noise. Ray skillman Hyundai southside in indianapolis has since "fixed" this issue as a goodwill favor, but we just got it back and haven't driven it enough to know whether it is truly corrected. Thanks for looking into this. Ralph and kelly mathews (720)-266-8739 or (317)-437-7200 have there been any accidents because.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle decelerated and stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (braman miami Hyundai, 2001 ne 2nd Ave, miami, FL 33137, (305) 571-1200), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 11506645. The failure mileage was 148,000. The VIN was not available.

22 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/02/2018

While I was driving the car stopped and wouldn't start, all the lights came on,message on dashboard read "hybrid system error" "check charging system" than everything went off, no power, no emergency lights, this in the middle of a busy street. Luckily a sheriff's was nearby and rerouted cars. Very scary. Seems I am not the only one that has a similar experience. This happened when I was going to work at 7:45am at s very busy intersection. Car is at mechanic's shop.

23 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/24/2018

Takata recall, my car was totaled out in a car accident on July 24, 2018. As the result of the person in front of me was driving and had to come to a complete stop multiple times attempting to find the turn she was looking for. It was a unit in between us allowing me to make a complete stop without hitting her. In the process of me hitting breaks my engine reved really high causing my car to speed up instead of stop. The back tired were even spinning with my foot on the breaks. As a result my car slammed into her rear end without me having any control period. There was no damage to her vehicle other than a scratch from the impact of my car, however my car was totaled completely out. I'm faulted for the accident bc I'm suppose to have control over my own car. In this case I did not. I was told by my insurance company to investigate if there was a recall on my car dealing with these issues causing my accident, and sure enough there is 2 recalls I was never informed about. The only one I knew about was the seatbelt and I took it to the dealship for that and it still didn't fix the problem. I need to know since these recalls play a part in my accident how I can be compensated. It clearly was not my fault that the car had manufacture issues I knew nothing about. It's had this issue for some time now but I was told it's bc it's a hybrid me knowing it was something not safe about it. I was in motion on a city street getting ready to get in the left lane once the lady turned to take my son to school. She almost missed her turn and hit her brakes. My car did not respond to me hitting my brakes it just kept going. #162.

24 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/22/2018

Upon obtaining my state inspection a couple weeks ago around 60k miles, my mechanic pointed out a slight "thunk" when turning the steering wheel and said to check for recalls. Since then it has become increasingly more noticeable. It "thunks" or clicks just to the right or left of center. First I only noticed it when parked, now I notice it when driving and the steering column rattles very loud when I go over even a small bump in the road. I am concerned that it is getting worse and trying to get an appointment to have it looked at. I see where this was a big problem with the 2011 model and now is starting with the 2012 around similar mileage. Clicking and rattling noise in steering column, not only while turning, but small bumps will make it rattle. Hope Hyundai issues a recall soon!!!.

25 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/19/2018

Engine started making a very loud knocking sound while driving 70-75 mph. Shortly there after the engine stopped and smoke came out of the hood. Towed the vehicle to a local Hyundai dealership that said the piston broke and went through the firewall.

26 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/29/2018

Experienced a completely unexpected (and potentially dangerous) stalling while driving (I. E. , not while stopped). This sudden stall was displayed to the sonata's driver panel as hybrid system failure, and the alarm was triggered to beep continuously. This may be related to the 12v lead-acid deteriorating, with capacity degraded to 110cca from specified 600cca. Even though the battery was degrading, the car should not stall just because the battery capacity is low.

27 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/21/2018

Vehicle transmission went up with no prior issues. Regular sonata 2012 engines have had recall on transmission - why not hybrids as they are having the same issue. Vehicle was in motion on highway and once in traffic had issues like going between 2nd and 3rd gear.

28 Power Train problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/16/2018

Abrupt and total loss of acceleration at full throttle at or near high rpm shift points. This behavior can be reliably reproduced by "flooring it" (all the way, including kickdown) and not letting go - as if one is executing a passing maneuver. The power loss will occur at the next shift point after kick down, and will not be cleared until the accelerator pedal is released and re-applied - or after approximately 15 to 20 seconds after the occurrence if the driver does not release the pedal. In cases where the pedal is not released after the power loss, the vehicle will surge suddenly after the condition has cleared and repeat the behavior described above. This behavior can be reproduced in any drive program mode (eco, normal, sport, ) and in both automatic and manual shift selection modes, and is especially prevalent at speeds above 45 mph where sudden full throttle command causes kickdown. The drivetrain should respond reliably when it is commanded full-throttle. A sudden power loss at a shift point during a full throttle maneuver is unsafe: (1) it disorientates the driver and; (2) causes un-commanded, unexpected, and rapid changes in driving force, weight distribution, friction, and reaction forces which could lead to a loss of control.

29 Power Train problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/20/2018

Mileage was about 16,500. On the freeway going about 70 mph, car shut down with alarm information and into a controlled glide, not allowing acceleration. After almost being run into I was able to move to the right shoulder and per directions, shut off motor. Was able to restart. Went three miles to my destination and car was towed to dealer. They did not know the problem, and after two days I got the car returned. They said they had to call the manufacturer to find the defect. Going home that evening after traveling about eight miles and again on the freeway going about 70 mph, the car again did the same thing on the freeway. Again starting it, the car went another five miles on the freeway when it again happened. Three times, same thing!!! (much like what I read about the prius two days ago. ) no longer feeling the car was safe in that it is difficult to Dodge vehicles on a freeway when a car shuts down three times, I traded it in. All I was told by the dealer that it had to do with the hybrid system.

30 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/13/2018

I was driving southbound I-405 near renton, washington around 7:30 a. M. Morning rush hour traffic. Message flashed on "check charging system hybrid system warning safely stop and do not drive" at 80,725 miles. Drove to Hyundai dealer 4 minutes away who read check engine light error code diagnosing problem as hpcu reservoir module failure. Hyundai dealer replaced part under powertrain warranty at no cost to me. Cost of module was $3,527. 45 plus $135 for 1 hr labor.

31 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/28/2017

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. While driving 15 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard and the vehicle failed to stop. Also, the gearshift became difficult to shift. As a result, the contact struck a street sign. The driver's air bag deployed. The contact sustained minor injuries to the back, which did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact spoke with keyes mission hills Hyundai (10240 sepulveda blvd, mission hills, CA 91345), but they could not repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

32 Power Train problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/10/2017

1: at the beginning of October 210, when the motorway exits from east to west, suddenly the engine does not work (pictured) and the car decelerates directly from 70 miles to 30 miles. The brakes can not work fully. Step on the gas pedal must step on multiple steps to relax the throttle, depress the accelerator again, from the second move to most of the most outside high-speed, do not know do not know about the crash above the speed. Such a high speed, I go home, stop the flame, and then open everything is normal. Later, dealer repair can not find the problem, until now there are three total failures, manufacturers repair is not good, do not solve the problem, it has been dragging.

33 Power Train problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/05/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that the front driver and passenger seat belts failed to properly retract and loosen when necessary. The seat belts restricted the breathing and bodies of the front seat occupants when the seat belts were secured. In addition, the vehicle lunged, jerked, and accelerated on its own. The failure was more prevalent when the eco and cruise control functions were activated. Eckert Hyundai, inc. (4011 s interstate 35, denton, TX 76210, (940) 243-6200) stated that the eco and cruise control functions failed and provided an interim repair of disconnecting the battery to clear the ecu and ecm codes, which affected the transmission. Another dealer (james wood Hyundai, 2110 us-287, decatur, TX 76234, (940) 627-4600) asked the first dealer to test drive the vehicle to generate the codes. The second dealer advised the contact not to drive the vehicle with the eco function activated. Both dealers stated that if the transmission was the cause of the failure, it may be replaced under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was not available.

34 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/16/2017

The vehicle also jerked in the opposite direction it was shifted. The failure occurred without warning. Norm reeves Hyundai superstore (18900 studebaker road cerritos, CA) was contacted and the vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.

35 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

Car make a noise from the front drive train while driving. Sounds like a wearing or rubbing noise while moving that increases during turning (while at road speed going through a curve in roadway). Noise has been consistent for the last 30k miles (current mileage is aprox 88k miles). New tires and alignment a few days ago do not lessen the noise.
