36 Power Train problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/03/2017

Driving on the freeway at apx. 65mph, the car lost engine power and displayed a"stop vehicle and check brakes" message. I had no power to the wheels, so could not safely move out of traffic and was stuck in the active freeway lane with cars zipping by. After the car coasted to a stop, I turned if off and back on. Power returned and I was able to drive normally. The esc, abs, and auto hold lights were on, but went off after apx. 15 minutes of driving. The dealer could not find any problem nor were any error codes recorded in the vehicle. This is a very serious safety issue - I am very fortunate not to have been struck and killed in that situation.

37 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/09/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. While driving 10 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The contact attempted to stop the vehicle by shifting the gear shifter into reverse, but it failed to shift from drive. All the warning indicators illuminated. As a result, the vehicle collided with a street sign. The contact sustained back injuries that did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact?s home. The dealer (keyes mission hills Hyundai, 10240 sepulveda blvd, mission hills, mission hill, CA 91345, (818) 221-4000) was contacted and informed the contact to have the vehicle towed to an auto body repair shop. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for determination of the brake failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed back to the dealer, but a failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.

38 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/11/2017

Charging system malfunctioned, sensors melted in valve trane, radiator elbow and fill neck blew off, complete engine failure and battery failure. I have had a problem with the "check brake" light and an alarm going off. However, when I stopped driving and had it towed to the dealership they could find nothing. Prior to this incident, I took a photo of my dash, I had 76,499 miles and the coolant meter did not read hot. I had had the coolant system flushed at 65,000 miles, and I had all oil and fluids checked again after this incident. The breakdown: three hours into a roadtrip, the a/c began blowing warm, simultaneously - the "the check brake" light and alarm came on, and the "check charging system" light came on. I lost power to accelerate (or brake well) and immediately pulled over and took a photo of my dash warnings (76919 miles). The heat sensor was in the "cool" half, the battery gage showed no power. Battery so low key would not start car. I had the car towed. "tech found that elbow and radiator have holes in them vehicle overheated causing engine to blow. " tiffany richardson said "tech believe vehicle was driven with low coolant level causing vehicle to run hot melting sensors in the valve train and the pipes to fail. " the tech is wrong, the coolant system was inspected and flushed at 65,000 miles, and was not due for another inspection. I had had coolant levels checked less than 1000 miles ago, and the heating sensor on dash did not read hot, at the point of breakdown or after a road trip 500 miles ago. Others had the problem at 3000 miles! it's the hpcu. The power for both electric motors is routed through hpcu. The inverters allow the a/c motors to be driven by d/c batteries. This caused the "check charging system" error. $15,000. 00 fix. I owe $4000. 100,000 warranty has denied it & I am original owner. Hpcu recalled b4? .

39 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/11/2017

Check charging system and check brake light came on at 76000 miles driveing 65 mph in the highway after 3 hours. Collant did not read hot, battery read dead. Vehichle quickly decellerated and I pulled over. Radiator blew neck off and several components of the cooloing system and hoses were melted there is a strong smell of fludge/fule based residue/combustion in cooling system that blew off neck. Battery so week I could not use the key to open a door or the trunk, or move seats. Coolant had just been topped of and system was flushed within 10,000 miles. Mechanic at kia dealership diagnosed tgat tge gead gasket/cylinder head leaded into the cooling system causing the neck to blow off the radiator and melting several sensors and components of the cooling system that would not have melted or blown from fumes of low coolant alone. Oil levels and quality was good. I photographed the dash lights at breakdown and the coolant levels did not read hot. Check charging system and check brake lights came on. Check brake lights check engine lights had been a problem before. Dealership for Hyundai (coggins Hyundai in deland) says they think a lack of coolant caused issue, but I know I had coolant in the car - they just want to not be responsible for warranty repair,as I am the first owner and have done proper maintainance. I have seen many other people complain of similar issues from when the car is new (check chargins system less than 3000 miles) and the car blowing up/catching fire, etc. Perhaps the reason mine did not catch fire was all the coolant that was released. One car owner insists that all Hyundais will do this between 70,000 and 100,000 miles. Something big is going on with these cars - mine has had continual problems and it should be replaced at huyndai's cost. This should be studied further! safty hazard! read Hyundai forum and the other complaints!.

40 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/08/2017

The car does not accelerate from a stop position at a light or during stop and go traffic on the highway. The car also jerks from transmission problems causing the driver to be distracted.

41 Power Train problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/17/2017

About an hour into driving home on the freeway, my car alert system went off and the car automatically began to decelerate and the dashboard display showed instructions to check hybrid charging system and to check surroundings and to pull over when safe and to not drive vehicle. The check engine light, the needs maintenance light and the check oil light all came on. After about 15 secs my vehicle lost all power but did not turn off; the steering wheel became locked. I placed the car into park and restarted it and the warning alert alarm ceased, but now the check engine light stayed on. The steering wheel was movable again and I was able to pull to the shoulder where a California highway patrol officer pulled up and asked me if I was having trouble. After our conversation, I was able to continue the additional 40 mile drive home as the local Hyundai dealerships were closed until the next day, Saturday March 18. I was able to drop my car off in the afternoon but due to their booked schedule, it could not be looked at until Monday March 20th and stayed over night. The technician called me that day and stated that the car test ran on it came back passing and no issues found and that they drove it about 20 miles and no issues and I was able to pick up my car on Tuesday. However, the same system issue happened 3 more times before I was able to take it back into the dealerahip later that week and it has been there as of 4/21/2017. I received a call today that a replacement hybrid battery was installed and after more tests I may get my car back.

42 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/26/2017

I was driving on a interstate and suddenly I see "hybrid system warning message" + "check charging system" with continuous alarm beep sounds. I had to immediately move to the right most shoulder on the interstate (which I was able to as car was still on with engine running). Once, I moved to the shoulder, I turned off the engine and restarted the car with check engine light. It would turn on fine but wouldn't move and immediately it throws up the error. I have attached the pics for reference. Since car didn't turn off in the middle of highway, I was safely able to move it to the curb. I cannot imagine what would have happened if car had shut off. I had it towed to the nearest dealer and there are working on it. I just had a 45000 miles factory servicing with same dealership where the car got towed to and they checked on all the green boxes. Within a week, I had this issue. This is what troubling me.

43 Power Train problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/15/2017

Abrupt and total loss of acceleration at full throttle at or near high rpm shift points. This behavior can be reliably reproduced by "flooring it" (all the way, including kickdown) and not letting go - as if one is executing a passing maneuver. The power loss will occur at the next shift point after kick down, and will not be cleared until the accelerator pedal is released and re-applied - or after approximately 15 to 20 seconds after the occurrence if the driver does not release the pedal. In cases where the pedal is not released after the power loss, the vehicle will surge suddenly after the condition has cleared and repeat the behavior described above. This behavior can be reproduced in any drive program mode (eco, normal, sport,) and in both automatic and manual shift selection modes, and is especially prevalent at speeds above 45 mph where sudden full throttle command causes kickdown. The drivetrain should respond reliably when it is commanded full-throttle. A sudden power loss at a shift point during a full throttle maneuver is unsafe: (1) it disorientates the driver and; (2) causes un-commanded, unexpected, and rapid changes in driving force, weight distribution, friction, and reaction forces which could lead to a loss of control.

45 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/25/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle lost power and came to a complete halt. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate. "hybrid battery low, shift to park position" was displayed across the message board. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 62,000.

46 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/16/2016

This vehicle Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has all the issues that the regular Hyundai sonata recalls have engine was rebuilt due to metal shavings in the oil pan, also this hybrid accelerates at times when it doesnt run on battery (engine kicks in) too many issues with this Hyundai Sonata Hybrid!!! in motion on highway/ city streets.

47 Power Train problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Transmission acts like it is slipping and shifts abnormally in forward and reverse, driver window up/down button doesn't work correctly it only makes the window go up 1/4 of the way so you have to let go and press it again. The radio keeps showing and error message waiting to get into the dealer.

48 Power Train problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

When pressing the accelerate pedal there seems to be a delay in response. The delay can be as short as a few milliseconds to almost 3 entire seconds. This problem happens randomly, and makes my wife and I very nervous when trying to maneuver or proceed into traffic after being stopped.

49 Power Train problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

The contact owned a 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that while stopped, the vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle. The contacted stated that the front seat passenger sustained injuries to the left shoulder, neck and back which required medical attention due to the seat belt retracting too tight. The driver also sustained injuries to his neck and back which also needed medical attention. The contact stated that any injuries of the other vehicle were unknown. The contact stated that the air bags did not deploy and no warning lights were illuminated. A police report was filed. The vehicle was repaired. The contact also mentioned that on several occasions while stopped, the vehicle would jerk with no warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired as the contact traded-in the vehicle at round rock Hyundai due to thinking there was a failure with the seat belts as they would retract aggressively. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The contact mentioned that the vehicle had two extended warranties but the failures were unknown. The failure mileage was 10,000.

50 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/06/2015

We were driving on i81n in virginia when it sounded like we were driving over gravel. I thought it could have been a tire. Found tires were ok. Waited to pull out safely. Seconds after we entered i81n, we began to lose power, a/c and a warning light indicating to check hybrid system came on in message board. We pulled off at exit 277n and had enough power to find a safe place to pull over. I discovered that the serpentine belt was shredded. We were towed to a Hyundai dealer where the car sat overnight on 9/6/15 until service opened on 9/8/15. The serpentine belt was replaced as well as the water pump belt which was also damaged. The mechanic informed me the new belt was not running true on the tensioner and a ridge had formed on the outside surface of the tensioner. My opinion is that the part was defective because the belt was not running true.

51 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

I had been experiencing a hesitation when accelerating, a lurch when hitting the brake as well as sometimes when accelerating as though the gears could not shift properly. This did not occur as often if the car was out of blue drive. This had been going on for about 4 months. I had taken it to a dealer and called a service department but none of them could explain why it might be happening and I could not make the issue repeat once I got it to the dealer. On Saturday I went to drive my car, pulled out and was going about 40 mph about 2 min after I had started the car and all of a sudden my foot was to the floor, the rpm was all the way up to red and my car was slowing down! I pulled over turned the car off and started it again, I pulled out again and it began to do the same thing but when I hit the brakes the car lurched forward worse than ever before. I pulled into a gas station cut the car off and got out to let my boyfriend try it (he had been following me in his car and did not know what was wrong). When he got in to try it he tried to put it in reverse and it would not shift at all. It was like it was still in park, but when he tried to put it back in park the car responded as though he had shifted it. Obviously something was very wrong with the transmission. We called the 24 hour roadside assistance and got towed to the nearest dealership. They mechanics spent all day taking it a[art and could not find the source of the problem. The senior mechanics came in on Monday and said I would need a new transmission, that the existing transmission was "all burned up" they claim this is a rare internal problem and that a new transmission will fix the issue. All of this was covered under my warranty but it could have caused major problems had I been on the highway when this happened!.

52 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/10/2014

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, he attempted to brake and all the warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the vehicle stalled and could be restarted. The failure recurred on fifty occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission, the electric motor, and the oil pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

53 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Recently my hybrid sonata car would not pickup speed especially between 10 and 40 miles per hour. It would also badly jerk while trying to accelerate or make high pitch sound without picking up speed. I had to pull to the side of the road couple of times and bit scared in driving it. Had the car towed to the dealer. The dealer after looking at the issue agreed to completely replace the transmission with the refurbished (from Hyundai) tramission :(.

54 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

The vehicle lurches forward during deceleration thus pulling pressure off of the brake pedal and causing you to put even more pressure on the brakes to compensate. Vehicle will slide on icy roads at this point. Vehicle also has little to no acceleration on electric motor after the vehicle is hot. Making a left turn from a stop with oncoming traffic is hazardous since the vehicle can take up to 7 seconds before it accelerates enough to complete the turn and clear the oncoming lane. Both problems seem related. The first would appear to be free wheeling with no engine type braking applied while switching from engine to electric. The second would be from no electric motor engagement during initial acceleration from a stop or slow to turn maneuver.

55 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

On October 11, 2013 I was driving vehicle at about 30 mph. The traction, brake, and check engine light started flashing. The engine started to accelerate & decelerate at random and vehicle jerked (intermittently) all mentioned lights then stayed on constantly. Vehicle was driven to dealership. Dealership scan tested & found steering angle sensor code in history, then recalibrated steering angle sensor. Vehicle was also serviced for recall regarding lower control arm (replaced). 2nd incident occurred on 10/22/13. I started car in the morning, and all the lights came on. Vehicle was shut off and then towed to same dealer. Service technician could not "duplicate" code. I was told by service that car was fine/operable. 3rd incident occurred on 10/23/13. I was driving and vehicle brake light, & trac light came on. Car was again jerking/surging and accelerating and decelerating at random. Vehicle scanned by technician and multiple "can" codes and steering angle sensor communication code found in history. Technician called technical assistance and was advised to replace motor driven power steering unit, replaced steering column with power steering unit, all ok after repairs (per dealer). Rental car charge incurred totaling $26. 28. 4th incident occurred on 1/2/14. I was driving vehicle and traction control lights, brake light, and abs brake started flashing. Trac light then stayed on constantly. Car began jerking (again) and accelerated/decelerating. Vehicle taken to different dealership. Service writer test drove car while I was in vehicle, and stated there was something definitely wrong w/vehicle and that it wasn't safe to drive. Rental car obtained. Technician looked at car, called support, and was told to charge hybrid battery. Service writer called back and stated that car was ready to be picked up. I refused to pick car. . .

56 Power Train problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

Engine shut off and battery only lets you go 1/4 mile pulled into parking lot turned car off waited 5 minutes and car started back up. Took car to dealer but could not find anything wrong told me to drive it. It happened again in April they had car for 7 days but could not find anything. Told me to drive it. It started again on june17th they say there is nothing wrong.

57 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

I was coming off of an on ramp to get onto the highway and due to traffic I had to let off the gas. The vehicle suddenly accelerated by itself, causing me to nearly lose control of the vehicle. Another incident took place at a school crosswalk area. I lightly pressed the brakes and the vehicle accelerated by itself causing my head to whip back and me to press harder on the brake. Nearly hitting kids as they crossed in front of my vehicle.

58 Power Train problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/04/2013

This began as a intermittent hesitant clunk, both during acceleration/deceleration in transitioning between electric motor / gas engine. It has progressed into an unexpected physical jump while going forward and reverse. The latest development was lurching forward at a crosswalk without consciously stepping firmly on the brake. Emails have been sent to Hyundai without a response addressing the problem. The car has been into the dealership twice, where components unrelated to the symptoms were replaced and a manager saying "that's what they do, and Hyundai considers it normal". Normal !?!? the problem is widely known, because it has been published in the media, and no dealership will offer anything but a lowball offer on a trade in, just to turn it around and dump it to auction for parts.

59 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/20/2013

See submission number 10559603 sent prior to this on 1/14/2014: this is a continuation of the explanation of the cruise control/transmission/power train issue experienced with the vehicle since new. The text from that submission continues to its end. "it would appear that the cruise control/power train computer program has some errors in it or needs updating to correct the problem of excessive acceleration when re-attaining a set speed from a coast down that causes the car to go below the set speed before the sensors detect and activate the acceleration required to bring the car back up to the set speed. Then is 'shoots' the car forward at full power-like unintended acceleration might- and send it up to as much as 10 mph above the 'then set' speed I have desired. If there is a corner at the end of the rise, the car can feel out of control during this acceleration as it is at full power during the acceleration phase. The transmission also down shifts 2 or 3 gears during this process which aggravates the fierce acceleration feeling. These incidents have been reported both to the Hyundai dealer and to Hyundai. Hyundai says, take it to our dealer; the dealer says they can find nothing wrong as no dash warning lights are ever showing and their electronic scanning brings up nothing of any kind of problem. This may or may not be exclusive to the Sonata Hybrid with cruise control and since many people do not use cruise control on winding rural roads, they may not/never experience the same sensation that can happen often to me. I can deal with it. Nhtsa should keep this report on file in case other cruise control or acceleration issues with Hyundai vehicles surface as my report is precisely defined as to what type of road condition it occurs on and what happens. Thank you.

60 Power Train problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/12/2012

While slowly moving downhill, on the freeway, during rush hour traffic, I attempted to change lanes and accelerated quickly. The switch from hybrid to gas engine interface only caused the engine to rev (increase rpm) without any gear being engaged. I quickly let off the peddle and depressed it again. It then engaged the transmission, narrowly averting an accident. This has happened 5-6 times since purchasing this car when traveling slowly and then trying to get a burst from the gas engine. I spoke with the dealership, and took it in for a check per their recommendation. They found nothing and could not reproduce it, although they did not try the same circumstance. They only attempted to stop and accelerate at which I said they wouldn't get it to happen that way.
