80 problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 2014 Hyundai Tucson. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2014 Hyundai Tucson based on all problems reported for the 2014 Tucson.
The engine experienced catastrophic failure. A piston punctured the engine block, likely due to failure of the connecting rods, an issue known to be associated with the recalled theta ii engine. The engine is still in the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. We were scared and felt seriously endangered during the incident. The engine failed suddenly while we were driving on a busy highway. After a loud clunk, the vehicle immediately lost acceleration and would not respond to throttle input. We had to quickly pull over onto the shoulder while traffic sped past us at high speeds. The sudden loss of power in fast-moving traffic put us at serious risk of being rear-ended or causing an accident. It was a frightening experience that could have resulted in injury or worse. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and confirmed there is a hole in the engine block caused by a piston. We brought the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership for further inspection. Still, their communication has been poor, and they have not yet confirmed whether they acknowledge the issue or its relation to the theta ii engine recall. Our independent mechanic has inspected the vehicle and is currently with a Hyundai dealership for inspection. It has not been checked by police or insurance representatives. No third-party inspector has been involved beyond the dealer and mechanic. There were no warning lights, error messages, noises, or performance symptoms before the failure. The engine failure was sudden and occurred without any prior indication of a problem.
I purchased a 2014 Hyundai Tucson with the 2. 4l theta ii engine, which has since experienced complete engine failure due to bearing wear. The Hyundai dealership diagnosed this as the same defect covered under recall 20v-520 and the kinnick & coats v. Hyundai class-action settlement (case no. 8:17-cv-00838-jls-jde). Under the terms of that class action, this defect — specifically premature bearing wear leading to engine seizure — should be covered. However, Hyundai corporate denied my repair, stating that my vehicle did not qualify under the 953 recall. I was never notified of this recall, as I had recently purchased the vehicle used and was unaware of the outstanding recall eligibility or class-action timelines. I maintain my vehicles meticulously, including regular oil changes every 3,000 miles, and this failure occurred under normal driving conditions. Given that the dealership confirmed the defect is exactly what’s outlined in the recall and lawsuit, and the fact that the recall should have applied to my engine based on symptoms and model, I am requesting an expansion of recall coverage or support through warranty or settlement coverage. I have already contacted Hyundai and was denied support. I am requesting investigation into why my VIN is not included and believe the recall scope should be extended.
While I was driving ,my vehicle unexpectedly shut off without warning ,creating a dangerous situation ,thankfully I was able to safely pull over . Due to this issue I had my car towed to dealership for inspection I discovered my car is included a recall number 22v056000 Hyundai refusal to honor a recall that directly affected my car Hyundai have denied the recall on my car for no reason.
As with many Hyundai vehicles, soon after I hit 100,000 miles, there was unbeknownst to me and oil leak that caused the engine to seize. There was no indicatior lights warning of the issue. My car’s has been maintained, and although this is under warranty, Hyundai is refusing to fix the issue because I cannot produce oil receipts for the past 4 1/2 years that I’ve owned the car. Those that I have produced, they say are not enough. The service station that I normally had my oil changed at has shuttered. So I cannot get as many oil change receipts as they want. Besides, who keeps receipts of this nature and what if oil changes were done privately?.
While driving on street lost power in traffic then a loud knocking noise. Pulled over to a mechanic shop and they told me that it was engine pulleys was bad plus 2 transmitters was bad . I only had the vehicle 4months . The dealership that sold me the vehicle I don't believe they had the car inspected tried to contact them but no reply . I believe the dealership ripped me off and I'm making payments on the vehicle, also my vehicle has not been running for 3 weeks due to the expensive repairs that is needed.
A recall caused my engine to fail, and needs replacing. It is I believe “campaign 966” they are claiming that I needed to have the system software updated prior to the engine failing. They know that their recall is responsible for the engine failing, but they are trying to go around it by saying that it needed to be fixed before the engine gave out. They never, not one time, reached out about this needing to be fixed. Not by email, or regular mail. Nothing. I’m reading everywhere that they do this shady stuff constantly to people, and it is just not right. Thank you.
Car came to a complete stop. Check engine light came on. Took car to ricks repair shop here in middletown NY. Results was told we needed a new engine. Had car towed to pepe’s repair shop middletown NY same results need a new engine. Ticking sound with check engine light.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled; the vehicle eventually returned to normal operation once the contact waited several minutes for the engine to cool down. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an auto repair shop where it was diagnosed that an abnormal sound was coming from the engine compartment and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
On August 17th 2024 my 2014 Hyundai Tucson wouldn't start. I had my vehicle towed to the dealership so that they can figure out why my vehicle wasn't working. I just leased the vehicle in March 2024. The dealership told me there was an engine recall on my vehicle and they didn't handle engine work and it needed to be towed to an Hyundai dealership. I contacted the Hyundai dealership and they told me there was an engine recall on my vehicle and that it would be serviced on October 17th 2024 at 11 am and hopefully done by 6 pm that day. I was and still am blown away that I have to be without my vehicle for 2 months. Fast forward to October 17th 2024 I'm excited about finally getting my vehicle back as this recall has caused me so much stress and a major inconvenience on my life. I contact Hyundai and am told the appointment is for a vehicle diagnostic and they don't have the engine it has to be ordered and then make an appointment to install. I also was told there were 2 other recalls on the vehicle that would be covered under the warranty or recall but the engine would not be covered under the warranty or recall because my name is listed under the dealership name on the title so my vehicle is currently still sitting at Hyundai with no answers from either party about me getting my vehicle fixed and back on the road.
Hyundai of meridian has my vehicle due to the recalls! Hyundai motor has denied repair! I was almost hit by a 18 wheeler when my engine stalled and shut down on the highway!.
I brought my car to dealership three times in two month period time. The first time was because car wasn’t starting and I need to replace spark plugs , second time was because camshaft position sensor and now the engine has failed.
The connecting rod bearing failed. The dealer has the car and has not provided me with detailed documentation as I have requested. I was traveling ~70 mph on I-95 in maryland when the engine threw a rod. I could control the braking and steering, but had no ability to accelerate. I was able to magically go across 3 lanes of traffic and exit the highway to a safe resting place. I had the car towed to porter Hyundai in newark, DE. They inspected the engine and sent documentation to Hyundai. Prior to the event, no warning lamps were on. The "check engine" light came on as the incident was occurring.
Hyundai corporate and bentley huntsville are refusing to fix faulty engine in vehicle. Bentley Hyundai submitted a fake PA asking for Hyundai corporation to pay for engine combustion cleaning. Hyundai corporation and bentley Hyundai huntsville alabama are not honoring extended warranties on known engine failure in their vehicles that are stalling on highways, catching fire and damaging other car parts such as catalytic converter, compressors and rod throwing of engines on highways. This is a danger to consumers and should be addressed.
Friday 1-26-2024 I was driving my 4 year old to preschool. We were on the highway traveling about 55 mph. Without warning my car engine turned off. After coasting for awhile, because I couldn't pull over due to guardrails, I was able to get to shoulder of road. Vehicle was towed to local chevy dealership with inspection result of seized engine. Car is available for inspection at chevy dealer, manufacturer has not inspected yet because I will need to have it towed the 35 miles to their dealership but they are aware of the situation. I didn't notice any symptoms prior to engine failure. This was a very scary situation for me and my child. I was so worried I was going to get hit by a car traveling behind me since my car was slowly coasting in the lane of the traffic and I couldn't get off of the highway right away because of guardrails. Once I could get off the highway, my car could only coast enough to get about 1 foot off of road which caused a hazard to other vehicles, myself, and child.
Car died on freeway. Hyundai is saying it needs an engine due to recalls not done. Hyundai is refusing to fix these three recalls or replace engine we never received notice of these recalls. Car is sitting at dealership Hyundai in flint.
On September 21, 2023, around 5:15pm, on long island (li) road in the right lane, I was heading to mastic area. 1. First noticed burning smell mixing unburned fuel from dashboard. 2. After few times, car started knocking which intense over time and left to immediate exit. 3. Then after few min. , car’s engine light and motor oil indicator started blinking and immediately proceed to park. 4. Then after car stalled and didn’t get start.
On September 11, 2023 I was driving my vehicle and the vehicle stopped moving. The vehicle panel did not display any warning lights. My vehicle had to be towed to my residency. I have attached a copy of the information from my insurance company state farm regarding the towing expense. 2016-2017 Hyundai Tucson have a current recall for engine failure the same failure the 2014 has. I will like to have an explanation why my vehicle has not been recalled. Please see the link below for other owners of the same make, year and model with the same issues. . Read more...
On Monday, August 7, 2023, I was accelerating, using the gear shifter and then went back into automatic-mode and the lights came on and car just stopped. It wouldn't restart - there was no noise, but the battery seemed to be working as the radio, lights, clock, etc. Were all working fine. I was travelling at about 40 mph. There was a small shoulder and I was able to pull off, but I wasn't all the way over. A huge storm was about to start and the sky was turning dark. Heavy rain and up to 80 mph gusts of winds. I had my flashers on but it was hard for people to see me. I was afraid someone was going to hit me. My car was towed to the mechanic where they told me the battery had died. I picked it up the next day and began to drive home. Less than two miles away, I was stopped at a red light and when I went to drive again the lights were on and car had stopped. I was able to start it one more time to get it over to the side of the road where it wouldn't start again. This time I was on a 6-lane road during rush hour traffic. The car had to be towed again and I had to call 911 to have a police officer come and set up his car behind me so I wouldn't get hit by the cars speeding by. The next day the mechanic told me that the engine had seized up and my only option was to have the engine replaced which would cost $8,000! the car only has a little over 100,000 miles and has been well taken care of.
Engine failure with no warning at all. All recalls were resolved prior to the engine failure. I was on a 4 lane bridge that was 7 miles long over tampa bay in heavy traffic. The engine light started flashing, the oil light came on and there was a loud knocking noice. Traffic was going anywhere from 65-75+ mph. I lost acceleration, had to turn on hazards to try to get over. It’s amazing that we were not rear ended and injured when this happened. The Tucson was running fine prior to the engine failure. The dealer notes display: 99947 - engine failed bearing replaced long block engine and road tested. The engine blew on 5/28/2023. The replacement was completed on Saturday July 1, 2023 when the dealer called to say it was ready. I had 99,947 miles on it and always kept up on maintenance and recalls.
While passing a vehicle in a passing zone, all of my dash lights came on simultaneously and the engine killed. My fiancee and I were traveling at approximately 57 mph. She was driving and had to try maneuvering safely to the side of the road. We couldn't get it completely past the white line on the shoulder however and put our flashers on to warn other vehicles. Her great uncle jim picked us up and towed us home on mother's day. My vehicle is available for inspection. My fiancee's uncle dani came to look at it the following weekend and replaced the starter in case that was the issue. That didn't fix the problem. At that time he suspected the engine possibly "froze up". It sat in our yard until we had it towed the following month to a licensed auto repair facility (dennys auto in dresser, wisconsin). They inspected the vehicle and stated the engine was bad and replacement would cost $6,500+. I have owned this vehicle for 4 months prior to this incident and have put on less than 4,000 miles. I didn't file a police report or file an insurance claim as it was not damaged by an animal or other vehicle. We could have been hit by the car we were passing or any vehicle that drove by us when we were disabled on the side of the road. At this time I don't have any invoices available to upload as my vehicle is still at the auto shop until early next week. I can get statements from all parties involved upon request.
My name is heidi anne weatherly. On November 17, 2022, I purchased a 2014 Hyundai Tucson from premier motorcars inc. Located at 3110 w. Tennessee st. , tallahassee, florida 32304. The vehicle was advertised on their website as available for purchase. When I arrived and inquired about it, I was taken to the back where it appeared to be getting detailed. There was no buyer’s guide on any window of the vehicle, anywhere on the vehicle, nor one anywhere in the vehicle. When I asked about it, I was told it was because it had just been used for a trade in, passed inspection, and being considered for purchase by another party. I took it for a test drive, and everything appeared to be in good working order, so I proceeded with the purchasing process since the salesperson lowered the asking price. Less than four months later, on March 3, 2023, while I was taking my children to school, my check engine and check oil lights came on simultaneously and my vehicle shuttered to a complete stop and would not start. I finally managed to get it to crank and barely made it to a nearby gas station. I had it towed to my mechanic and was told it needed a new engine. My payments for this vehicle commenced in February 2023. I’m financed through first florida credit union for a current balance of $12,015. 95 that I am still paying $232. 00 per month (and $114 per month for auto insurance) for a vehicle that I cannot drive and cannot afford to repair. A repair that I now know is due to a recall issued on February 2, 2022: manufacturer recall number 218/ recall campaign 218/ NHTSA recall number 22v056000 that I was never informed pertained to my vehicle. I have already submitted this complaint with the attorney general's office, the federal trade commission, the better business bureau, and the national highway traffic safety administration. On June 22, 2023 my vehicle was towed to werner Hyundai dealership in tallahassee, FL. I have not heard anything regarding repairs and can't reach them.

Engine quit working doing 60 mph on interstate leaving my 20 year old daughter stranded on the side of the road in a remote area. Highway patrol had to come get her to keep her safe. Hyundai refuses to replace the engine under the theta engine judgement as required by law because they state recall 953 was not done but we were never notified, and this page does not indicate there is a 953 open recall on the vehicle.
As I was driving on 76 in philadelphia PA my engine seized it wouldn't go over 5mph. I panicked because of the highway I was on that. I put my hazard lights on as I made my way over to the side. My car was towed to the dealership this is the 3rd engine that is being replaced. Th whole dashboard lit up prior to the engine and its still showing no recall on my car. Yet the dealership said its part of it. So now I'm waiting for a new engine once again. I just reached 72,000 miles. They did give me a loaner.

Car keeps throwing "p1326 glow relay short circuit" code. This is the 3rd time it has happened in 3 weeks of driving it. Engine power is limited, engine is knocking and squealing, wheels are locking up while driving, engine keeps dieing while actively moving and accelerator is pressed. Just purchased the car in used market with 105k on odometer. At time of purchase dealer indicated the they had to put a new top end into engine to get it to run. This car is the most expensive lemon I have ever encountered!.
2014 Hyundai Tucson bought used with 20,781 original miles in November 2021, thru an estate sale. On December 01, 2021, took the vehicle to dealer for analysis on an engine knocking noise that would not go away by driving it. I then researched the problem on the internet, and read these Hyundai engines had bad engine manufacturing defects, and regularly had engine failures, with some blowing a hole thru the engine block a causing fires. After tests at the dealer, they stated it had “past” the engine knock noise test and I could bring in back at a later date for another test. They stated they could not do anything with it passing the noise test. I told him I could not use a car that was defective and not safe. I told him I knew Hyundai had settled engine failure lawsuits. No other attempts or offer was made. On 02/23/22, I took the vehicle to the dealer again for another engine knock noise test. I believed the noise was now louder and stronger. After being tested again, the dealer stated it past the test again, and they could not replace the engine without a failed test. The dealer stated to come back when it fails or makes a really loud knocking noise. I told him I did not want it to blow up on me or make me cause an accident on the freeway before they would act. They stated it needed to fail the noise test. I told them I did not like this at all. Was told to keep using it until it failed. On 09/22/22, I spoke to the dealer representative in person. He was very busy, I asked him to keep my engine noise case open on my car, as it was still making a loud knocking noise. He stated it was closed now. He offered no other further assistance on my problem, and started to talk to some else. I felt I was just blown off. Now, I guess they want the engine to blow up before any thing is done to fix it. I further believe they don’t care if it causes an accident. Even though they know of the problem of engine defects, they refuse to just fix it with another engine.
My car stopped abruptly on my way home. Tried to restart the car to no avail. Placed a call to mcgovern Hyundai dealership in leominster MA and they ask me to hold, they informed me my car is part of a safety recall and needs to be tow over. I did as instructed, mcgovern dealership informed they will work it out with Hyundai motor America. I received two letters in my mail, one for safety recall and they will be fixed at no charge. Dealership informed me my engine work is not part of a recall and I should pay for the charges. Further checks reveals that my car model, year and make was part of a class action lawsuit which Hyundai settled due to failure of engines.
The car randomly decelerates. Driving in traffic at 55 miles and hour and car drops to 35 mph without warning. Puts the driver and passengers at risk of being rear-ended/ or having an accident. The car will also does not accelerate properly. Puts the driver and passengers at risk of being rear-ended/ having an accident. Check engine light comes on. Take car to dealership. They take a month or so to fix. The car drives normal for a month or two and then the problem repeats. This problem repeatedly puts peoples lives at risk. The car is in the shop for the 6th time in two years. Dealer has replaced nox sensor over and over. Downloaded new software. Offered to clean the gas tank. (rip off) internet has this problem identified over and over. Why is there no recall for something that is going to get someone killed.
On 7/29/2022 we took a trip with a 2014 tuscan from from boise idaho to worland wy. About 2 hours past pocatello in a town called kemmerer wyoming the vehicle started to knock in the engine. As this happened the vehicle started to derate its self from 80 mph to 50mph and wouldn't accelerate past 1500rpms. We pulled over and checked the oil and found metal on the rag used to check the oil. Ran a code reader and it read p1326. That means the knock sensor detection system is tripped. In 2020 they fixed the sensers on most vehicles using the gdi engine because they would have a faulty trip. The tell tale sign that it wasn't a faulty senser was the engine knock and metal in the oil. We drove two hours the night before and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I would get oil changes every 3k to 5k miles. I checked fluids the night before when I left boise. This issue came up with no warning. Turns out Hyundai has a life time warrantee on the gdi engine because they have major problems. They was a 1 billion dollar law suit against kia/ Hyundai for issues during the manufacturing. This issue applies to the Hyundai sonata, santa fe, Tucson and kia optima, rio ,sorento ,soul and sportage. Make sure to call Hyundai/kia and they should replace the engine free of charge or give you a option to trade even if you do not have a warranty. I attached a link that should prove to be helpful in researching this issue. . Read more...
For a year my vehicle has this sort of loud noise, sort of a vibration , it has been consuming and burning large amounts of oil, to now where I'm having to put 1-2 quarts of oil in a week. I was made aware from a mechanic at Hyundai there is a class action lawsuit for an engine defect where the rod bearing breaks which damages the engine and can cause either the engine to seize or catch on fire. . Hyundai refused to fix the engine until it is deemed a total loss despite them being aware my vehicle is already displaying the symptoms of this engine defect. This is so unsafe for not only myself and my family but other motorists .
The engine malfunctioned within the first 8 months of me purchasing the vehicle. It just randomly stopped working one day. The dealership was able to succesfully replace the engine under warranty (at least that’s what they told me they did) however, the same issue arose another 8 months later. I’ve done everything I needed to do as far as getting the oil changed and maintaining the vehicle. The engine light would repeatedly flash on and off so I assumed it was a malfunction because I just had the engine replaced. I took it to a local mechanic to get evaluated and they determined the engine was really bad and needed to replaced again. I reached back out to the dealership to notify them and they reached out to my extended warranty company. The extended warranty company denied my claim stating it is not covered due to the engine causing the insides of the vehicle to melt. Now I have a car that I am unable to drive due to no fault of my own.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Tucson. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 22v056000 (service brakes, hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not available. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and lost electrical power inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to veer to the shoulder of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who informed the contact that it would take 7-10 days to diagnose the vehicle. The contact stated that other unknown dealers were contacted and the contact was informed that there was no earlier availability to have the vehicle diagnosed. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer informed the contact that they would follow up with her within 3-5 business days. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I financed my 2014 Hyundai Tucson in March of 2022 on June 9 2022 while driving down the road the engine just quit. I took it to a mechanic that advised me that the engine seized. Luckily I wasn't going fast or on main highway because that could have been fatal.
