Hyundai Tucson owners have reported 630 problems related to service brakes (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Tucson based on all problems reported for the Tucson.
Since taking possession of the vehicle, I have experienced two incidents involving the automatic emergency braking system activating unexpectedly, despite no obstacle or hazard being present. During one of these incidents, the vehicle braked abruptly and forcefully enough to cause an injury to my wrist. On March 7, 2026, I brought the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, where it was confirmed that there is an issue with the front right camera, which appears to be affecting the forward collision and automatic braking system. In addition, the vehicle required premature brake pad replacement due to persistent squeaking. Experiencing brake component issues on a brand-new vehicle raises further concerns about the integrity and reliability of the braking system. Brakes are a critical safety component, and premature wear or abnormal behavior so early in the vehicle’s life undermines confidence in the system designed to protect drivers and surrounding traffic. There were no warning lamps, messages or symptoms prior to the failure. The first instance occurred within 30-days of taking possession of the vehicle. The second two months later.

Vehicle randomly activated automatic emergency braking and the forward collision warning with no other vehicles in sight. The vehicle slammed on the brakes almost causing a trailing car to rear end our vehicle. This has happened 5 times with speeds between 40 and 80 mph over the past 4 weeks. Conditions were cloudy. Problem has not been reproduced by the dealorship. No inspections have occurred.

2 times, while driving 35-40 mph, the vehicle automatically slammed hard on brakes to full stop without any danger or other vehicle near, causing neck pain/whip lash. 3 days ago, I attempted a u-turn in busy intersection, suddenly the vehicle braked hard and came to full stop without any danger near. The dash lights lit up, the vehicle stalled. I was in middle of very busy intersection. It would not move forward. I reversed just in time to miss being slammed into by fast moving oncoming traffic.
At high speeds above 40 mph vehicle automatically brakes with no vehicle or objects in front while vehicle is in operation. Very concerning when driving on interstate.

I purchased this car [xxx] as a cpo vehicle from a Ford dealership. By [xxx] the oil pressure light would flicker and it was clear the car was burning a lot of oil between changes. On 8/22 an oil change was completed at dealer. On [xxx] the oil pressure light flickered and it was three quarts down. An oil consumption test was started at 112,000. On sat [xxx] while driving to dealer for oil check, the car began shuddering violently and the check engine light came on, and went into limp mode. I was on a dangerous mountain pass at the time and it could have been a major issue. The day before a tractor trailer had almost run me off the road, if my car had stalled then I might not be here. Hyundais have a known issue with oil burning and engine damage. Right now I am stuck in a 14k loan with a car that is unsafe to drive. I am not sure what the dealer plans to do, or what the diagnosis is, but its clear these engines are not safe. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. While driving a 2025 Hyundai Tucson rental vehicle (VIN: [xxx] ), I experienced a sudden and unintended acceleration, and the steering appeared to turn without input. The vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree on a local street two blocks from my residence. The result was the wheel was popped off of it's axel and deflated immediately. Two days prior, I experienced a similar event in the same vehicle — sudden acceleration and braking hard making a loud braking noise. I suspect a mechanical or electronic malfunction. No warning or sensors were alerting me that this would happen. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The car breaks itself so abruptly when there is no real danger. This has almost caused for me to be rear ended on multiple occasions. Especially scary on the freeway. The forward collision warning is set to "late," and it still causes a huge jolt.
Approximate date 10/7/2025. Driving 20mph clear daylight sunny conditions in right lane, another vehicle in left lane put on right blinker to merge in front of me into my lane. The merging vehicle was 3 car lengths ahead and had plenty of space to merge. Merging vehicle was only half way into right lane when without touching the brakes and no warning alarm the wheels locked up completely, skidding to a complete stop, almost got rear ended. 2 days later on 10/9/2025 same weather conditions while driving on highway the traffic was stop and go,speed 40mph. A vehicle ahead of me applied their brakes,no imminent threat, I placed my foot on brake pedal as a precaution, then brakes locked up so I pumped brakes thinking what else could I do? this did nothing, brakes remained locked until vehicle stopped. Almost got rear ended again. I can’t remember if any audible alarm or dash warning. These were the only 2 incidents with braking failure. Hyundai dealer booked appointment but they could not find any issues with the braking system on 10/2025. Mechanic could not reproduce braking issue. When I picked up vehicle I spoke to the mechanic. He said “ if the braking issue occurs again please make another appointment. The salesman who I purchased the vehicle said “shut off the warning system”. Which I declined his offer. Thank you!.
While trying to pull out of driveway it will hard stop like im going to hit something. I can be driving thru town and all the sudden it will try to stop abruptley. It does it often. Took to shop and all they would say is all systems work like they are supposed to. My font collision light comes on all the time with some times staying on for a few days. I have tried to wipe it off with no luck keeping it clean. I drove it off the lot turned around asnd they had to replace a head cause it stuck open. Runs funning.
My 2025 Tucson hybrid violently stopped in mid traffic while leaving the intersection once the signal turned green to proceed. I accelerated getting to speed limit then it abruptly stopped, violently throwing contents from back seat to the forward cabin. Both, myself the driver and my passenger were jolted violently. The school bus behind me had to stop quickly as we were just getting up to speed from a stop light. The vehicle is brand new, 2024 miles on it. Tucson nline hybrid with all the safety features turned on. I called the dealer and service rep which both instructed to turn off the fcs forward collision system setting. I did but this shouldn't be happening and will cause bodily harm/damage, and possible death is a specific situation. This abrupt stop was jarring to both people in the car.
I have experienced 4 repeated issues within 4 months with my vehicle. Starting in September 2025 and the 4th and current issue today 1/12/26. Driving when all of a sudden all of my brake components lamps come on dash oard, forward collision alert, and check engine, my vehicle struggles to accelerate accurately. Blue link diagnostic throws various codes such as ecm, transmission control system, even "multiple possible issues". Each time my vehicle has been at Hyundai dealership for repair. Each time they repair something different 1st- replace abs module and hydraulic brake, 2nd - happened out of state at my mother funeral and replaced my ecm, 3rd couldn't figure it out and guessed it was my forward collision camera and replaced it, 4th - is today and awaiting dealership diagnosis. This issue has left me stranded several times local and long distance, occured in middle of driving including on highway, and overall uncertain of the safety and reliability of the vehicle as each time it has been the same type of issue. I have been in communication with Hyundai corporate since October and they stated that even tho I only have 24k miles on the vehicle that it is outside the state of in lemon laws for a buyback. If I hadn't purchased an extended warranty I would be in even more debt or unable to put it in the shop even tho I don't feel like this should be my burden when I have kept this vehicle in great shape, low mileage, frequent oil changes, etc . However the safety of my vehicles goes unresolved. At this point I am uncertain that Hyundai is properly diagnosing my vehicle and not certain how these issues are impacting other components of my vehicle such as brakes, transmission, engine, sensors. I am the only owner of this vehicle bought brand new. I have checked repeatedly for any recalls that I have not addressed and at this time none are pending. I fear that this vehicle will continue to have more safety issues.

I took the vehicle to the service station because it takes a long time to stop, and I braked close to a vehicle on several occasions. They replaced the brake pads, and when I took the baby in, it was worse. When they finally agreed to let me take the baby in for another inspection, they said they would have to remove and reinstall the parts. Two months later, my baby started doing the same thing.
It’s been three years now and I had “brake system failure” happened two times in 3 years. When traveling the brake system warning appears and while driving, and stopped at sign brake releases slightly and car would start to move unless I apply brakes firmly again. When slowing down at traffic lights holding the brake doesn’t bring car to complete stop. I had apply brake, slightly release and then apply again until car comes to full stop. I was told they need to replace ieb module and brake pedal module replacement. I checked in reddit and other platforms where users had seen the issue multiple times on their vehicles. Also had an issue with fuel system like replacement of egr valve which seems to be common on multiple vehicles.
My abs has been sticking and finally the pad broke off. My car made a squealing noise everytime I drove it. I had parked in my driveway and there was a piece of metal on the ground. I showed it to my son, he took the tire off and said it held my abs brake pad on to my driver side rear. He is a master tech for Subaru. I just haven't had time to take it into Hyundai. It has stopped squealing, but my abs brakes no longer work.

All warning lights and audible alarms started going off at the same time. Eps, abs, auto hold, collision warning, air bags, all wheel drive, brake system, and more. 1st time it happened was [xxx], while driving. The car was drivable but I did notice a difference in braking and acceleration. I parked and turned off the car. I did turn the car back on several times and the alarms continued. I finally turned it off for 10 min, and all alarms stopped, but the check engine light stayed on. Car sat overnight and all warnings had stopped. Took it in for service, and issue could not be duplicated. 2nd time it happened was [xxx]. I had to have the car towed since it would not move when in drive or reverse. Alarms were still going off when it made it to service. They replaced the brake harness. 3rd time happened on [xxx], 3 days after the brake harness was replaced. Towed it to service and they replaced the engine harness. 4th time was on [xxx], 2 weeks after engine harness was replaced. This time there were no audible alarms, just all of the visual ones. Same performance issues as stated before. This issue seems to have happened to several other Hyundai owners as well, as per complaints in reddit and on Hyundai forums. There does not seem to be a consensus for what is actually causing this issue. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The issue started just before my vehicle had 60,000 miles on it and only occurred every once and a while but, now it happens more often. When braking at low speeds my car makes a hissing/buzzing noise and the pedal goes soft. We got to a dealership when it had 60,420 miles on it. The dealership had it for two weeks saying they have never experienced anything like this issue before. They even contacted Hyundai tech to help them. No warning lights ever came on and that was my concern. Finally after two weeks they said my tone ring on my driver's front side was bad and causing a false 0 reading. When I asked why the warning lights didn't come on they told me everything was working like should. Then after I pointed out that they said it was reading a false zero they were like no that must have been a typo its reading four miles under the rest and that's causing the abs system to activate. I'm from ohio so I know what my abs sounds and feels like when it activates. It's a pulsating feeling not a soft pedal. When my abs truly activates my traction control light comes on. As I stated no lights have ever come on. This issue causes longer stopping times. There hasn't been any accidents because my wife and I try not to drive it. It's going to a third shop to try and figure out the issue. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection.

My entire dashboard goes black and I lose all directions and functions in car. It happens when driving often. Additionally after taking to dealership, it's getting worse. Now warning lights come on and stay on such as master warning lights, batteries, power steering, etc. Ac shuts off, the car misses out when driving between 25 and 30 mph. The dealership told me it's not safe to drive.
During a recent accident, the driver pressed the brakes but they did not respond, almost as if they locked up. Police at the scene noted there were no skid marks on the road, suggesting the brakes never engaged. The vehicle suffered major side impact damage, including broken windows and crushed passenger-side doors, but none of the airbags deployed. This raises serious concerns about a possible brake system failure and airbag non-deployment defect. The vehicle has not yet been repaired and is available for inspection. Police have reviewed the accident, and the insurance company has also seen the vehicle, but no mechanical inspection has been completed by the manufacturer. There were no warning lights or error messages prior to the failure. The safety of the driver and passengers was put at risk because the car could not be stopped and the airbags did not deploy to provide protection.
We have had a suspension clunk since we bought this in April 2025. Something is loose in the right rear. They have replace the right and left rear shock mount, the right rear shock and it still persists. There is a clunk or grabbing noise when the brakes are applied as it almost comes to a stop, it appears to be in the front. This has not been found, the last mechanic that looked at this said all new vehicles do this.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. I was traveling on [xxx] in nashville. There was a motorcycle speed trap on the right shoulder so I moved over to the left. The car in front of me also moved to the left and my car slammed on the brakes and came to a complete stop on the highway. I was badly rear-ended causing $12,500 in damage. This has happened 2 other times to me since then. This seems to be a consistent problem with the 2025 Hyundai Tucson. I'm fixing my car and selling it as I don't feel safe. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Automatic brakes are deploying with no apparent hazard.
The vehicle's brake system intermittently fails after driving over bumps or uneven roads. The brake pedal becomes soft and unresponsive, and the vehicle continues rolling forward for several seconds before the brakes finally engage. This has happened repeatedly while driving home from work. On one occasion, the vehicle rolled through a red light and I had to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid a collision. This issue first became noticeable in 2022 and has worsened over time. It puts both my safety and the safety of others at serious risk. There are no warning lights or error messages before or during the failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Independent mechanics have confirmed that brake pads, rotors, and fluid levels are in good condition. They suggested the cause could be air in the brake lines, a malfunctioning abs system, or a faulty master cylinder—all potentially covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The manufacturer’s service center initially refused to inspect the vehicle without an upfront diagnostic fee and only offered assistance after I escalated the matter through repeated complaints. The service director later described the issue as “unsettling but normal,” which is not accurate according to independent professionals. The problem has not been resolved and continues to occur regularly. I am requesting that this be formally investigated as a potential safety defect.
Several times now the forward collision safety has activated and the car came to an abrupt stop. The car in front of me was braking and I was lightly tapping the brake pedal when out of nowhere the car started shuttering and came to a complete stop. This definitely scared me and I was relieved that the car behind me did not rear end me. I was not going fast by any means and I did not slam on the brakes as there was no need to. The forward collision is not a safety feature. This is a real problem and now I am scared of this braking design. I now deactivate this feature every time I turn the car on because there is no way to permanently dismantle this. Hyundai needs a recall to correct this.
Engine misfiring, causing low power on interstate 70 also losing brake control.

The blind spot warning went off and locked all the brakes up. We were not able to move the vehicle and could not even pull off the road out of traffic. There is no way to disable the brakes when the computer or sensors are malfunctioning. We had to get the vehicle towed.
1 forward collision unexpectedly slammed on the brakes when I was trying to go forward to make a left turn. There was no one in front of me nor each side of me. I had 2x4’s in my car that were thrusted forward damaging my dashboard and display. I was told to take it to the dealership on Monday 2 I was fine just hooked up, but the driver was pissed off at me thinking I was stopping short on him 3 randomly the rear sensor would go off telling me they are too close when I’m at a complete stop. It has randomly stopped short on me but I thought it might have just been an over sensitive sensor. I have previously owned an ioniq 5 and the sensor would never stop going off even if I was 2 car lengths away. 4 the car is going back to the dealership on Monday so it has not been expected yet 5 exactly 6 days after purchasing the car the airbag indicator showed up on my dashboard while I was driving. I was used to the ioniq 5 sensors always going on when I was stopped waiting for a green light that I just thought it was the same way. It had abruptly stopped on me three other times between the 6th and today the 21st. I have only had it for 3 weeks. I have never gotten any warnings before the car just slams the breaks on. After looking online about this issue I decided to make a report before I take it to the dealership so you have it on file. I am very disappointed with this vehicle and was so excited when I bought it. I have been a loyal customer of Hyundai since 2017 when I bought my first ioniq and I have purchased 6 other cars for my family members since then. I still purchased the Tucson after having to take a 15,000 loss because the ioniq 5 never held its value. Now I’m wondering if I should switch manufacturers.
For the second time in a year, I was pulling into a parking space and when I applied the brake, the car accelerated, seemed to be airborne and lurched forward. Though I firmly had my foot on the break, it would not stop until it hit a brick post about three feet away. This exact same scenario happened in July of last year. Then, I hit a stand of shrubs. Someone said, your foot must have slipped off the break and hit the accelerator. I said, “I don’t think so. ” yet, I took the blame for the accident, for I could not believe it was a car malfunction, nothing close to this had happened to me since I owned the car. Everything was the same in the last crash as in the first. This time, as soon as the car accelerated, I checked, and my foot was firmly on the break. There is definitely a malfunction in the car. The black. Box should be recovered and read by someone not associated with Hyundai. I checked on Hyundai Tucson owners’ group on facebook, and my incident has been reported by others.
I received a email about a recall my vehicle has I made an appointment with the Hyundai dealership which sent the email. Hyundai wesley chapel in tampa FL and I took it in on 6/16/2025 at 10am and waited an hour. The service advisor came to me and advised me that my vehicle was purchased in puerto rico and cannot be serviced because they don’t have the parts. This is unacceptable and don’t understand why they went through the trouble of sending me an email regarding this recall to waste my day at the dealership.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the brake pedal inadvertently engaged, with the abs warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed and it was determined that the hydraulic unit assembly for the abs module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving 70 mph and depressing accelerator pedal, the vehicle started to decelerate. The contact pulled over to the right side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The contact waited for two minutes and attempted to restart the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The brake warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a misfire in cylinders #1 and #2. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 20v543000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 177,000.
This has been an ongoing problem since I last reported this on February 16, 2025. My brakes are grinding seriously and prohibiting me to fully stop at times. I’ve had several near misses… I want them fixed now!! my car is no longer safe!!! still doing it today @ 12:18pm with mileage of 130,605… please help!.

On 2 separate occasions, the forward collision warning system activated. On both occasions I was under control of the vehicle with my foot on the brake approaching a vehicle that had slowed while entering into a round about. . . I was approximately 10 feet from the car in front going about 6 mph. All of a sudden several warning indicators activated (audible and visual) and then out of nowhere, all four wheels locked and my car came to a skidding/juddering stop. I immediately looked in rear view mirror fearing I was going to get rear-ended. The vehicle in front proceeded to move on and I tried to get myself together and get moving. I was shocked that this had happened as it was totally unnecessary. I was completely in control of the vehicle prior to the activation.
At times, this vehicle will refuse to go. You will get an alert in the dash that the emergency braking system has engaged. It may be a door is not completely shut, or sometimes it's just that I don't have my seat belt on. It seems to be inconsistent, because I often times put my seat belt on after I finish backing out, and am ready to go forward. If there is any kind of incident that requires a fast escape, this "feature" could cost somebody their life, or cause them to deal with a carjacking. The car needs to go when I tell it to go.
