I bought the vehicle 14 days ago and everything was going well until black smoke started to come out of the exhaust and it started to smell burnt. I brought a mechanic to my house and he told me that the engine had already died.

Smoke, burning smell came from ac control unit. Ac wiring unit, knob completely burned/melted. Reported to Hyundai local and corporate office no resolution other then I just have to replace the unit. Please note this happened in 2022 (40,000 miles today vehicle had 58,000miles) and I paid in full for the replacement the 1st time.
I stood my 17 month old nephew up in the front passengers side floorboard of the 2012 hyundia voloster manual transmission with push start . I stepped out of the car on the passage side of the car the car was parked in first gear no one was on the driver's side . I bent over to get my shoes on and baby reached over and pushed the start button on the car the car should not have started since the clutch was not pressed in but unfortunately the car started and lunged forward being on a incline it was as if someone smashed on the gas pedal I ran with the car as far as I could but it was going so fast I could not get into the car to stop it I was drug trying to stop the car the car flew thru a fence , into the woods, down a steep hill then crossed a one lane road traveled up a hill thru another patch of woods before going up hill and hitting a tree all the while our nephew was not in a car seat the car was bouncing side to side when it went off road to cross a creek so I know the baby was thrown around in the car he had to of been that car was going so fast I was screaming in fear that he would not be alive when I made it to the car now the key was in my purse located in the passenger side floorboard where I stood the baby up at so when I reached the car the doors had automatically locked the car was still running and the baby was screaming I could not leave the baby to go get help so I tried to tell him to open the door but like I said he is 17 months old he didn't know what I was telling him to do and since the car went thru the fence it knocked the wiper blades off and the metal was going back and forth on the glass and it was so loud screeching back and forth and baby is screaming and I could not get to him and I know the screeching is scaring him even more so I reached up the pull the wipers away from the windshield and when I did baby leans on the door to see what I was doing and he hits the windows button and the windows came down just far enough to get it unlock.

The climate control knob and ac system failed due to an apparent wiring defect. This is a known issue affecting hundreds or thousands of Hyundai Veloster owners. The failure causes loss of climate control and creates a safety issue due to a lack of defrosting and cabin airflow, as well as electrical fires. I have spent thousands of dollars trying to get this fixed, and mechanics are turning me away.

Abs, eps, check engine light appeared on dashboard then car’s steering wheel stiffed and car lost power. Vehicle’s hood smells burnt and has fumes come out after driving for 10-20minutes. My safety and my family’s was endangered as this happened while driving on the road. Not at a stop sign or a red traffic light but while driving. The dealer has refused to inspect/address the issue without having me paid close to $2,500. 00 for other repairs.

The knob for the a/c can not handle the amperage when in the 4 position, it gets too hot, melts, and shuts off the system. It is available for inspection. Hyundai is acutely aware of this problem and recalled it in other years, the same as their junk engines, but once again the owners of the 2013 are left out in the dark. This is a fire hazard that the manufacturer is trying to sweep under the rug, there are service bulletins out on it for other years.
On or about may 1, 2025, I was operating my 2013 Hyundai Veloster when flames were observed emanating from under the hood. I immediately pulled into the median and, upon opening the hood, observed an active fire beneath the plastic engine cover. I contacted 911. Before the fire department arrived, a passerby extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters from a nearby station arrived shortly thereafter and fully doused the engine compartment. The vehicle was subsequently towed to a Hyundai dealership. At that time, I was aware of an active recall related to potential brake line issues that could result in an engine compartment fire. After the vehicle remained at the dealership for an extended period, I was informed that Hyundai motor America (“hma”) would send an inspector. Approximately 30 days later, I was contacted by hma’s corporate office and asked to provide documentation, including a copy of the title and insurance information. During this call, I was advised that while repair or replacement of the vehicle was unlikely, hma would “make me whole. ” shortly thereafter, I received written correspondence from hma stating that, following its review of the inspection results, documents, and other information, no product defect was identified as the cause of the incident. The letter concluded that hma would not accept responsibility and denied my request for assistance or compensation.
See attached document for complaint.
The air conditioner knob doesn't work when I put it at 4. Took it apart and the wires are burn including the pigtail that holds the wires into the knob.
The climate control switch melted. Available for inspection I was getting smoked out by plastic fumes. Researched this issues with all data no no lights.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the reverse park aid (rpas) warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the reverse park aid sensor (rpas). The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 23v132000 (electrical system); but the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.
Over the last year, I’ve had to purchase three air conditioner switches after driving for several years with it being out the first one we replaced caused a small electrical fire as did all of the others. This has been an ongoing issue not just with my car, but my sister‘s in-laws who is a 2014 model I looked online. It has been reported over the years basically since the cars come out of this same issue can you please issue a safety recall before somebody’s house or vehicle or both catches fire completely. This is not safe at all. I have already put in a request for the safety recall on several other occasions this is unacceptable unsafe and a very large problem across the united states since this vehicle has come out please do something.
On October 17, 2024, owner was leaving denver, CO on the highway and had to stop for traffic and vehicle wouldn't move. Was in drive but vehicle would not drive and pulled to side of road. Had insurance tow to nearest Hyundai dealership. Check engine light was on and dealership checked vehicle and needed to have the crankshaft position sensor replaced. Fixed the problem thank god and I was on my road shortly there after. My Veloster is 2013 with 47,000 miles at time of incident.
When you put the car in drive it will go in reverse. Happened several times and on the last time caused us to back into a pole and mess up the back bumper. We were trying to go forward but went in reverse. We have video proof but I can't load the video in this document.

Ac fan control switch has melted and filled car with smoke. Fan control switch has overheated. The switch has melted and will not work at all.
The hvac heater control assembly and panel shorted out and melted all the components (wiring harness, connector, temperature control knob). All these parts need replaced. There's no ac, heat or defrost, etc. . . Until this is fixed. Also this is a 16 year old drivers vehicle and could have resulted in a much worse incident if she had been driving it when it occurred.
The Hyundai recall doesn't fix the problem, which is the abs module leaks brake fluid internally which can catch fire. The claimed "fix" puts in a low current fuse that supposedly electrically will lower the risk of a fire when the abs leaks brake fluid internally and shorts out the electrical power to the abs module. The problem is that the abs module can develop an internal leak which causes a short that fries the abs module and can cause a fire by igniting the brake fluid. The lower current rated fuse can still cause a fire, so I don't see the NHTSA recall no. 23v651000 as a real fix. I want a replacement of the brake fluid leak-prone abs module in my 2014 Hyundai Veloster turbo so I can safely use and park my car indoors without the potential of a fire while parked or driving. I have not experienced a fire in the recalled vehicle, but I think I am entitled to a proper "fix". I am an electrical engineer with an msee degree and many us patents. I have been greatly inconvenienced by following the recall warning to "park the vehicle outside (outdoors) away from structures". The outside exposure to hot temperatures, harsh sunshine, and salt air degrades the finish and mechanicals of my vehicle by following the recall warning. So Hyundai's faulty abs module costs me money (value of the vehicle) besides the risk and inconvenience. Make Hyundai really fix the problem by replacing the abs module as a minimum.
On 06/252024 I was driving on my way home and my cars climate control were unresponsive and I smelt something burning. I arrived home removed the center console of my vehicle and noticed the ac control plug had melted and was burnt.
Vehicle is burning through oil without having oil light engaged. Vehicle is going through two quart + of oil every 3 weeks. Just added 2 quarts of oil 3 weeks ago when the car would not accelerate past 5mph and rough idled (this turned out to be caused by a different issue still being diagnosed), I added the oil as dip stick showed no oil on the stick. Light did not come on. Took to independent mechanic this week who stated I had no oil in the vehicle. Can not go 3 month/3000 miles for an oil change or the engine would be damaged. Have taken the vehicle several times to valvoline who indicate no oil with no oil pressure light on, each time. This has been constant for 2 years. Each mechanic shop states the gdi engines are burning through oil. No oil leaks have been detected. This issue could result in serious engine damage.
The connection to my ac control knob burned up and my ac only works between 2 & 3. This could have easily caused a fire as the connection and the knob are melted and burned. How has there not been a recall for this issue as there are many complaints that have been reported on this issue. This is a safety hazard!.
This has happened on 4 different occasions. I'm on the highway and my speedometer slams to zero and everything involving the brakes lights up in my dash. The car continues to drive but it's pretty worrisome as I drive 70mph around alot of traffic. I have been able to pull over every time but it's still beyond unacceptable. I've had my Veloster a little under a year and I don't know if the other recall involving the motor being replaced was taken care of. It was a recall associated with my VIN. I have a video of it happening but for some reason I try to upload it on the app and it won't allow me to. It is the proper format.
Passenger side door will not latch or lock. Door remains opened while driving.
Since the make of this car and it’s further year generations people can complained about the a/c control switch burning out and actually it melts the inside of the part. Upon replacing it will short out again and again. So my people have called Hyundai over this issue and they 22 years after my car was made still have not issued a recall. Please someone do something about this!!!please!!! they don’t sell a replacement part and Hyundai is making 200+ just for the part they “need” to replace (whole unit) for a $5 part of the unit. As someone who lives in az it can be fatal to not have a/c. Additionally the stearing controls have also shorted out. This while card electronics are a hazard and a money pit!.
The plug that connects to the ac control unit is burned and damaged. In fact, when I replaced it its smells like smoke. It is the third time since 2018 that I changed the unit. I decided to officially make a complaint because I saw that this vehicles and exact models from 2014-2016 where included but my year not ( 2013). I called the Hyundai and they told me that I needed to buy the unit and go fix it in a dealer. I found it unfair because is a defect of the car not something people can make to the car. The campaing nunber 16-01-070 from December 2016 ( and my car where not included) the problem is not the unit is the plug that cames from the car that connects to the unit that melts and gets burned. ( but the unit is damaged due to this).
Vehicle blows fuses when plugging multiple items also burns up items such as car heater (plug in one) and other devices.
I had cruise control enabled while driving down the highway. When entering a sweeper turn, the steering wheel locked up completely and could only be moved about 1cm either direction. If this had happened on any mild turn this would have resulted in a crash. The steering wheel locked up entirely at 50mph. I was able to slowly get the car to the side of the road utilizing the 1cm of freeplay in the steering wheel. Steering would not return until I restarted the car. No lights appeared on the dash before, during, or after the incident. Component that failed was 56320-k9000 power pack assembly. Dealer replaced this under warranty after the ecu revealed the component had failed. The component is no longer available for inspection. Steering gear box power pack (r-mdps)|steering gear box power pack (r-mdps)|steering gear box power pack (r-mdps).
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 15 mph, the gear shift indicator located on the instrument panel started flashing. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into gear and failed to remain in drive(d) as intended. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and parked. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the fuse panel, the transmission, and the alternator wiring harnesses had melted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
When I make short trips and then turn car off for a few minutes before trying to start it again, sometimes it doesn’t restart. I have to sit there for 5-15 minutes before it will start again. Once, it died at a 4-way stop then started right back up. Today, the motor cut off while I was accelerating at 35 mph right in the middle of the road. After 10 minutes it started right back up. This is my daily driver and I know there’s a campaign for this abs/electrical issue but I need a solution immediately before I’m left up a creek without a paddle. That was so scary that I’m afraid to even get on the interstate to take it to the dealership!.
Hvac system has failed twice, upon inspecting, connections are melted. This is a fire risk. Fuses constantly blow. Check engine light constantly comes on and after having auto zone diagnose, issues include power train system (p2261), anti-lock brake system - wheel speed sensor (all 4) show invalid/no signal. Constant knocking noise under the engine which related to the rod bearing recall. This car is a fire and safety hazard waiting to happen. My outlets barely produce power, my lights flicker constantly, my battery has been replaced multiple times, as well as the hvac once.
Hvac system wiring is melted, only works intermittently between knob #3-4. Check engine light comes off and on for wheel speed sensor (all 4) invalid/no signal. Fuses consistently blow. Multiple complains have been made by other 2015 Hyundai Veloster turbo owners. In addition to these issues being a huge fire risk, there was a new fire risk safety recall issued in sept 2023 with no resolution. Hyundais only current resolution for this is to “park away from structures in the meantime”, and will send a letter out once resolved. The hvac system has been replaced once prior.
In Dec of last year my cars dash lights started flashing no matter which gear I tried the gear would flash on the dash, when I called my extended warranty "car shield ",they recommended that I take it to a repair shop in nearby city and have a diagnostic test performed. I did so,in which after testing they said it was something on side of transmission and they weren't equipped to perform the repairs and needed to be taken to dealership instead. I picked up the vehicle and same issue was present of course, so I had it towed to a dealership and then was contacted by them that they could not do a diagnostic test until the battery was replaced because it was not starting, so I brought a battery and put it on in the place of my old one. I made sure that the vehicle was going to start before leaving and it did with no problem, so I turned it off and was contacted by the dealership saying that it was extensive damage, and car shield had to send out their own personal investigator and they refused to fix any issues and would not pay for diagnostic services or the $10,000 to cover the repairs due to unknown circumstances causing the fuse box next to battery to melt as well as damage to my wiring harness and the wiring harness for the alternator somehow. Now I have a vehicle that I paid for less than a year ago and a no good extended warranty paid for as well and a vehicle with less than 100000 miles that's useless.
The blower fan only blows slightly and the knob does not work. This was a known issue with the 2014, but not the 2013. This causes a significant safety concern to someone living in extreme heat, especially children and the elderly.
