Hyundai Veloster owners have reported 186 problems related to equipment (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Veloster based on all problems reported for the Veloster.
Driving on cruise control on interstate , the 2014 Hyundai Veloster felt like it lost power . The engine light flashed a few times . White smoke came out of rear as started to merge it made a low clank noise from the engine compartment . Pulled over off of interstate and popped hood to check the engine and realized there was fire coming from all over the engine . 2014 Hyundai Veloster financed not even made the first payment either. Had 120,043 miles on it . Dealership claimed that they did a recon on it before they turned it over to us . We did take it back in because the engine turned off as he was idling at stop lights. It was harder and harder to get started , it got to the point where it would stop running while moving . The dealership could not replicate the problem and therefore turned it back over to us . Codes p0302 and p0335 came on . There were no recalls on the 2014 models but the year before and after . Doesn’t make sense , since they all had engine problems , catching on fire .

The trunk latch is defective; the trunk flies open when you hit a bump. There are a lot of cars with the same problem.

On 08/17/2022, we had to have the car towed to the dealer for a very concerning issue. My son was driving down a major highway (middle lane) and as he attempted to accelerate, the car was not responding. It was like the car went into neutral and the rpms went up, but there was absolutely no acceleration. It was scary as he had traffic all around him and needed to get over to the breakdown lane. He finally got over and the car would not move forward or reverse. The check engine light also came on, so we had the car towed once again to the dealer. Once there, they looked it over and said it needed a new map sensor. They also stated that they thought the problem was with the dct control module. They said that they needed to do a retest of the dct control module and followed through with that. When I went to pick up the vehicle, I was told that the car was working properly, but they couldn’t be sure that it wouldn’t happen again. If the same thing happened again then they would need to replace the dct control module. After paying $800 to have my car fixed, I didn’t feel very hopeful. It makes you pretty anxious to drive a car that just loses power out of nowhere. Under normal conditions, losing acceleration on a major highway could severely affect the driver’s ability to control the vehicle and maintain a safe speed in traffic. This could cause a major accident. Here we go again. On 09/23/2022, my son was driving down the highway when he suddenly lost power again. The same scenario played out once again, only this time he didn’t have much room to pull over. He was forced to pull over in an accident-prone area of 77 south with a cement barrier next to him. Soon, he saw police lights behind him. The police officer was very concerned with getting the car towed quickly and showed my son the skid marks on the pavement from a previous accident. Now the dealer is saying its the transmission and transmission control module. This car is very unsafe to drive.

While driving this vehicle, it suffered catastrophic engine failure, I had no low oil pressure or check engine warning lights until the failure occurred. I was stranded on the I-270 outer-belt of columbus, OH during the early morning hours of July 20, 2022, that is a hazardous place to be with traffic passing my vehicle at high rates of speed. I checked my engine oil and there was nothing on the dipstick. The vehicle had not exceeded its oil change window. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer/police/or insurer. Aaa gahanna new albany service center 614-750-8350 verified that the engine was blown. It is unsafe that and engine can be suddenly oil starved with no low oil pressure light, leaving the driver at the side of the highway amid fast moving traffic.

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed at a local mechanic with an evaporative emission system leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 20v393000 (equipment). The approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
Unknown: 1) was parked and car took longer than normal to start. 2) after starting and shifting gears, car would not move forward or backwards. 3) towed to mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. Note: all gauges were on and was able to shift as normal.
Air conditioning connecter/wire I burnt/burning making me feel uneasy and have a fear of vehicle catching on fire there were no warning lights or messages that notified. Found out by smell of burning plastic Hyundai dealership inspected but did not think it was a huge issue and notified me to just keep caution of burning smell (?).
I have a Hyundai Veloster 2015 base (dual-clutch transmission) that has 152,000 miles. I’ve regularly kept up with maintenance. Fully synthetic oil changed every ~5k miles. About a month ago it got a brand new battery and a new alternator. I have some issues related to the transmission. My owners manual regarding transmission fluid says: transmission fluid: -checking 6-speed automatic transmission fluid: the automatic transmission does not have a transmission fluid dipstick. Refer to your scheduled maintenance information for scheduled intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not consume fluid. I’ve recently experienced intermittent issues with the transmission failing to engage 1st gear from a stop. I have a code p073f as well as p0420 that’s been intermittent for months. (I know that’s the cat converter) the engine revs but does not accelerate at all from a stop on occasion. It happened three times in the week. Also have issues with clutch (dct) overheating. When this occurs, I will see the current gear that I am in (usually d but it has occurred in all others except p, n, and r) begins to flash (usually three times) with a chime warning noise. Restarting the vehicle resolves the issue occasionally. Then, a few days ago, after coming off of the highway I was no longer to get the car to go faster than around 20 to 30 mph and began to hear a loud clanking/metallic sound seemingly from the engine. The gear indicator began blinking rapidly and continued to blink in every gear in d as well as s and even when I put the vehicle in park. After turning it off and waiting about 10 mins I turned it on and the “p” was no longer blinking. Decided to test driving it through the parking lot and began blinking again pretty much as soon as it shifted gears and began to hear a metallic noise again. I suppose that I assumed it being a closed-circuit or “sealed” transmission meant there wasn’t maintenance to be done on it.

Car stalls out while driving. It happens randomly while on highways, going up or downhill, & while making turns. No warning light or sensors go off. It just shuts off and it is extremely dangerous. I’ve taken it to a Hyundai dealership on three different occasions. The first time they claimed it was due to carbon build up in the throttle body. So they cleaned it out and said it should be fine. I took it back two times after that for the same issue and was told because they can’t duplicate the problem there is nothing they can do. I have almost been in 3 accidents because of this. I have also discovered this is 1 of the too 3 problems that have been reported by Hyundai Veloster owners. Most people have been given no solution! that is totally unacceptable as this issue is to hazardous to ignore.
Daughter almost was hit because car slipped out of drive while she was on the highway. Car is giving codes for crankshaft position sensor. I looked on youtube and this problem seems very common. Why is car not going into gear because of these codes? very dangerous.
Cruising on freeway ~70 mph when car starts slowing due to lack of power- for unknown reason car went into "limp mode", with turbo boost pressure and power cut off, barely enough power to keep car at 60 mph in order to make it to freeway exit to pull off. This could have caused serious collision. Turned off car, let it sit 1 min, turned it back on, and problem seemed to go away. No check engine light, no obd2 codes. Limp mode sometimes occur during harsh shifts but releasing throttle and reengaging usually fixes it but this time needed to shut off the car. Has been reported to dealer but they can't reproduce consistently and no cel/codes so they won't try to find a fix. But losing power for no apparent reason on freeway definitely dangerous situation.

The heater fan switch is failing the same way Hyundai technical service bulletin 10-01-070 describes the issue for 2014 and 2015 Hyundai Velosters but the TSB is not applicable to my 2013 Hyundai Veloster even though my heater fan switch is exhibiting the same issues. The youtube videos I have seen regarding this heater fan switch failure show that the switch is melting down in the dashboard due to poor electrical contacts which could result in a fire in the dashboard.
Vehicle consuming oil. . . Been to dealership several times for this issue. . . Oil consumption test performed confirming usage of oil. Latest measurment on oil consumption was 1. 8 quarts in 1000 miles. Vehicle blowing blue smoke, back of vehicle covered in oil. Vehicle lost power/accleration on highway causing large saftey issue. Pa# from Hyundai is 100577. Received updated warranty extension from Hyundai up to 150,000. Car is exhibiting multiple signs of recall involving connecting rods. Have spoken with Hyundai corporate, am now on my third case number with them. . Case 19177351.
During cold temperatures (sub 32f), the driver's side door will not open from the outside. Occasionally the passenger door is affected as well. This required crawling through the hatch to open the doors from the inside. When the key fob is actuated you can hear and audible click in the area of the door lock, but it can't be opened. Once the weather warms and the car warms up the doors perform normally. This has never occurred during the warmer months.

The engine light began flashing and it was hard to drive without the car loosing speed like it was stalling out when I pressed the gas it did not get power. It smelled like burnt gas or oil and fumes where coming from under the hood. I have had it for 2 months. When I took it to autozone the code read p1326. I dont understand why other same year make and models are recalled and not this one. I will not be able to drive it because other same make and model recalls say there is potential for fire.
My car is changing gears while im driving- I will appear to lose immediate power to the vehicle only to see that the car that was in drive, going 65 miles per hour, drops down to 20 in seconds and is now in 2nd gear or neutral ! other issues- put the car in drive from park and it jumps to neutral- put car in drive- stays in drive position but satys in neutral - put the car in park but car thinks its in reverse - blew a piston at 65000 miles - Hyundai refused to help me for 5 months - tried to sell me a new engine -- this has been happenng for 2 years - I will list the latest event below.
Vehicle makes a loud noise when shifting and sometimes will not shift at all.
I own a 2016 Hyundai Veloster, and the manual heater control unit only works on certain numbers. I haven’t had it checked out. But I first noticed it when I purchased the car. Sometimes the heater or air will just turn off. I know there was a recall for the same models but for 2015.
While driving on the highway today, my sunroof shattered, spreading glass everywhere. Had the cloth lining not been over the sunroof, the glass would have rained onto the driver while driving at highway speeds. The vehicle and part have not yet been inspected and no warning lamps were present.
My car was stolen due to the the way the ignition was produced by Hyundai.
My 2015 Veloster reflex has been at alan jackson, jackson TN. For 45 days. The vehicle was serviced there for campaigns/recalls. The primary complaint, engine failure while I was driving down highway 70, the engine completely shut off, a defective engine, a product which Hyundai is at fault. The defective engine is consuming 1 quart of oil per 80 miles. I asked the service department to start the oil consumption test, brian the lead technician, responded "you need a new engine. " this safety hazard and economic burden has yet to be resolved. The Veloster is kept and maintained in immaculate condition. While the vehicle is only garage kept, it is now in the elements without protection, remaining on the lot of the service department for over 45 days, which is not in good faith a suitable resolution period. I commute 100 miles round trip for my profession as a university professor in microbiology for the university of tennessee. My 2015 Veloster reflex is my primary mode of transportation to various satellite and main campus obligatory profession duties. I am without transportation due to Hyundai's negalence in properly addressing these chief safety hazardous engine failures/massive oil (synthetic) consumption which is now blowing through my catalytic converter, exiting through my exhaust tips, turning them black and splattering oil along my rear bumper. The original case manager, jose, failed to respond to this safety hazard in the 10 business days which Hyundai has set forth, as well as, when jose would tried to be reached on my behalf, jose was never available, in addition too, his voicemail was always full, which meant I could not leave a message. Again, is this how Hyundai's customer care is really showing through their actions that they do care?.
Veloster has three doors. At the same time, for no apparent reason, both passenger side doors failed to open from the outside. In researching this problem, I found many Hyundai's have door problems. It starts with not opening from outside, then will not open from inside or outside. The safety hazard is getting trapped in the car and not being able to open a door for escape or someone from outside trying to help and they cannot get the door open to help. The problem has been identified by an independent service center and there are many references to Hyundai door locking problems on the internet. This has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives. No warnings, the doors just failed to open, 2 of my 3 doors failed. Fortunately, I had one door to use. If someone was in the small backseat it would be very difficult to crawl out to the front to exit.
When I was driving and got up to to the front gates, my car stalled. I knew I didn’t stall my car myself so I was curious what happened and didn’t think much of it so I just turned my car back on. Then the check engine light came on. As I started my car again it would act weird and just start to hesitate kind of. I went to park and as I came back the car would not turn on. It would just keep trying to turn over at really low rpms then shut off. After that it would not turn on what so ever. Hyundai is currently in the process of looking at it.
Constant false positives, already took to dealership and issue still persists.

My car caught on fire and burn up I was almost killed.
So my manual heater knob randomly stopped working as I was driving on 6/4/21 around 11 am as I was about to do an errand run for my family. I was told from a friend that there was a TSB issued on it and looked it up. I went to my local dealership island Hyundai staten island explained what was going on and they told me because it is a TSB and not a recall you will be responsible for the cost of repair. I told them why should I when this is a defective situation out of my hands I shouldn't have too.
Almost got into an accident with 2017 Hyundai Veloster. Car stopped accelerating. Car had service campaign to enhance knock sensor software to detect abnormal engine bearing noise before potentially "severe engine damage occurs. " they did not explain engine could have issue. Engine oil keeps disappearing. I went more than 5 times no fix yet. One time they put a free oil change. I keep going to Hyundai and am told nothing is wrong with car by Hyundai dealer. Months later I receive a letter from Hyundai extending warranty due to connecting rod bearing wear for replacement of engine. According to Hyundai," if abnormal engine bearing noise is detected, the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) will blink continuously, and the vehicle will be placed in engine protection mode allowing the customer to drive to the nearest Hyundai dealer for diagnosis and repair. In addition, dtc p132600 will be recorded in the ecm. The vehicle can continue to be operated for a limited time in engine protection mode, but it will accelerate slower and have a reduced maximum speed. Engine rpms will be limited to approximately 1800-2000 rpm. " my car is doing that. I told dealer. They tried to charge me to change my coils and sparkplugs and refused to check my engine unless I fixed that first. They said they don't know what's going on even though Hyundai sent a letter out stating engines will be fixed because of rod bearing wear. Hyundai knows that the engine is bad and extending warranty for engines but are not recalling the engines. People can die from this. Engine oil that leaks because of this can heat up and cause cars to explode/cause accidents.
Here a slight knock in engine when idleing.
I bought a Veloster but hasn't been brought in for recall maintenance.
Car spontaneously loses power to engine while in motion. When starting the vehicle, the engine sometimes struggles to turn over and does not correctly read rpm as this dial will read 0 rpm even while in motion. When this occurs it is accompanied by difficulty accelerating uphill and bucking. On 2/24/2021, while driving up a small hill on a city street, the engine shut off and the no key detected light turned on. The engine turned back on about 1 second later and dash read 0 rpm even though the vehicle was accelerating. On 2/25/2021 while pulling forward in a drive thru restaurant line, the vehicle's engine shut off and the no key light, battery light and check oil lights came on. I took a picture of the dash at this time. I turned the vehicle completely off and restarted it. Dash continued to read 0 rpm but was able to accelerate. I turned the vehicle off again and then restarted it a second time and the vehicle then seemed to be functioning properly for the remainder of the drive.
Check engine light is blinking. Car is less than one year old . 108,000 miles. I put 8,000 on it. Car lights go out after replacing , steering column, electrical issues , oil in spark plugs , fuel line seems clogged , emergency brake doesn't hold every time, ect taking to Hyundai in the morning. Dangerous.
I heard something drop and then the car started smoking. I pulled to the side of the highway, turned off the car, and went to open the hood, but saw flames. The entire front half was engulfed in flames. A couple years ago I had to get an engine replacement due to oil over consumption. The same issues started happening again and the dealership was not helpful with getting the situation figured out.
Traveling from little rock arkansas to branson missouri my panoramic sun roof exploded out of nowhere on the inner state. Scared me and my family to death no reason for the breakage that I can see notice that there was a class action against this model and brand but I am outside the deadline my vehicle is a 2015 Veloster.
I bought the 2013 base version Veloster w/ 80,000 miles on it back in 2021, beginning of January having no problems with the vehicle. Halfway through the month my Veloster started having on and off transmission problems, then at the end of the month, not even a month into owning the vehicle , my car won’t go into gear and my gear light is blinking on my dashboard. I do my research and see alot of Velosters have this problem, but don’t know the reason for it. So I proceed to take it to a trusted mechanic that does a diagnoses and determines I need a new tmc module, and also determined nothing else was wrong with the car. I had to wait 8 months to get the part from the Hyundai dealership and finally when they get it fixed, they tell me to take it to the Hyundai dealership to get it reprogram, because the car was put into limp mode after the new module was put in. After I picked up my vehicle, I took it to the dealership. I left them with all the information and insist that I only want to reprogram my tcm module. They proceed to do a diagnosis on my car and call me the same day, saying they have a recall on the rode bearings and also that I need a new transmission, and will replace it for 7,100$. I was mortified. The vehicle is only 80,000, and I already have to replace the transmission after buying the vehicle, I feel scammed. If I see that thousands of people are having this same problem, I believe it needs to be address.
Trunk door won't stay up. Head and neck hit by door a couple times when getting groceries from the trunk. Clicking noise in the steering wheel when turning/driving.
