1 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 11/28/2025

While driving my 2016 Hyundai Veloster (VIN: [xxx] ) on the highway, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration. I went from 60 mph down to 20 mph with no throttle response, and the car only continued moving briefly from momentum. I was forced to stop in unsafe highway conditions and had the vehicle towed home. Prior to this complete failure, the car had recurring transmission/drive issues: it would start, but when placed in reverse it moved backward, and when shifted into drive it still only moved backward. Despite repeated repair attempts, the problems persisted. A certified mechanic later inspected the vehicle and confirmed severe internal engine damage, including metallic noises, blue smoke, oil leakage from worn piston rings, and complete compression loss. The mechanic concluded the vehicle requires deep engine repair or replacement. These failures are consistent with widespread reports of Hyundai Veloster engine defects, which pose serious safety risks to drivers. My vehicle is now inoperable despite responsible maintenance and repeated attempts to fix the issue. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 10/04/2025

"catastrophic engine failure & ineffective recall remedy (NHTSA 19v-204): ?while traveling at highway speeds, with my two children and boyfriend, the vehicle went completely black. Car loss complete power, going into a limp mode( 'loss of motive power') the check engine light began flashing before going solid. When I was able to pull to the shoulder, I tried to start the car and noticed the radio screen was black and stayed black(before this time, the screen would some times go blank or completely black and then turn back on). Car would start and shake really hard with noise coming from engine, and then car would die. Since then I have been going back and forth with Hyundai motors and Hyundai dealer, telling them that this is not a warranty issue, but a safety issue and they both have ignored and didn't enology this at all. This happened October 4th, 2025 recall of 182 was completed but it failed. The vehicle is at the dalton Hyundai dealer in nation city. Dealer confirmed zero compression in engine and want $5000 to tare engine to see if it would be under warranty but I keep telling them this is a safety issue that is still accruing and under the 573 recall/19v-204 I tried to get help throw the bbb and got denied because of age and being the second owner and they told me to contact NHTSA I am a single mother of two young kids, I bought car on 01/26/25 and still owe money on car. Since 10/4/25 I have had to pay out of pocket for a car rental just get to work. My car is up for repo due to me not able to pay for a rental and my monthly car payment. I am lost and don't know what else I can do to get this matter seen. When buying this car the sale person said it is a good car, it will save money on gas, and it has been a nightmare.

4 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 08/08/2025

Gas was shooting out of my gas tank cap, strong gasoline smells in and out side the vehicle, popping noise coming from the back from the gas tank expanding so much it pushed up the rear seat. This puts me and others at risk of fire, explosion and toxic exposure. This problem has been reproduced. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer. A check engine light came on for a evap sensor but the next day it was gone.

5 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 07/10/2025

After an update for a recall for brake issues, the dealership updated the knock sensor update without my consent. After the knock sensor software was installed, my 2012 Hyundai Veloster will not operate without going into protection mode. Hyundai states that they can not reverse the software update to make my vehicle operable again. This has already come up as a safety concern as my wife was on the interstate when the vehicle shut down in 70+ mph traffic.

6 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 06/04/2025

I am the second owner of a 2016 Hyundai Veloster base, purchased used at approximately 19,976 miles. Since then, the vehicle has experienced multiple major powertrain-related failures. At 49,196 miles, the first catalytic converter failed and was replaced. Later, both the engine and second catalytic converter were replaced by kearny mesa Hyundai, a certified Hyundai dealership in san diego, CA. When I brought the vehicle to kearny mesa Hyundai, there were no warning lights or active diagnostic trouble codes. However, the dealership’s service documentation stated that a p0420 code (catalyst system efficiency below threshold) was present — a code that was not active when I dropped off the vehicle, raising concerns about diagnostic accuracy or documentation. Now, at 61,982 miles, I brought the vehicle to Hyundai ontario due to delayed shifting and hesitation when accelerating. The dealership diagnosed internal transmission failure and quoted approximately $5,000 for repairs. There were no warning lights or codes detected, meaning this diagnosis is based solely on driving symptoms. The failure of two catalytic converters, the engine, and now the transmission — all within approximately 42,000 miles of ownership — raises serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this vehicle and possible manufacturing defects. The transmission symptoms pose a serious safety risk, especially when merging or accelerating into traffic. I am requesting that this vehicle be investigated for potential systemic issues affecting its powertrain components.

7 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 02/27/2025

The car stall when I'm driving.

8 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole". . . They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire. . . How do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??.

9 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

One night I was driving on the highway and my check engine light came on. At first I thought it was weird because I had just gotten the car from a dealership three weeks prior. I pulled into a gas station and checked my oil which was low so I added some oil that I had bought. As I was driving home the car suddenly developed a tick and started to lose power. The turbo stopped working. I was pretty concerned about this so the next morning I decided to top off the oil and I decided to take the car into a shop. The first shop heard the engine knock and told me that my crankshaft might be going bad but I wanted a second opinion so I took it to a trusted shop who heard the engine knock and told me the engine would need to be replaced. I called the warranty company and they inspected it at the shop and said the engine would need to be torn down for diagnosis. I had to agree to pay for the shop to tear down the engine if it would not be covered. The shop found metal shavings in the oil pan. Once the engine was apart, they said that the rod bearing was bad. The car and engine are available for inspection.

14 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 06/09/2023

I have had the abs checked by Hyundai dealership per recall and they told me there was no issues, but I’m having a lot of problems with accelerating, and it shifting gears, I don’t think the system is really diagnosing, whenever I turn my car on sometimes it will do a diagnostic read, but it can’t send data, and it will take a while for the system to reset itself. It does smell like my car is smoking and I will have to physically roll my window down and/or poke my head out the window to make sure it’s not smoking. I’m checking my temperature gauge in my car to make sure it id within normal range. And when the check engine light comes on, sometimes it will come up and will blink for a few seconds and then disappear. Then I will go to o’reilly’s or advanced auto zone to get a reading the common codes that have come up were p0401, p0442,.

15 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

16 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 04/20/2023

My rpm’s were running very low after putting gas to the point the car felt like it would turn off when at idle. I was stopped on a highway at a light when the car revved low and shut off completely. The light was green and I had to sit and try to get it back on, it started right up. Brought it to the dealer and they found no issue with the car. Rpm’s have still been low to the point the car seems like it wants to stall & I’m not sure what to do. It doesn’t make me feel safe driving it.

20 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 12/28/2022

There is an open recall for my 2013 Veloster turbo 1. 6 turbo engine code 182 from Hyundai. But it’s not showing under my VIN. My car have exact problems that is described in the recall. “ engine damage can increase the risk of a fire or cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. ” so I went to the dealership but they said they won’t help me with the recall and they can fix my car but they are going to charge me.

22 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 06/27/2022

I took my car to a dealer called lee johns in everett wa for 2 recalls, but they told me I had problems with my catalytic converter and they replaced it under warranty at no cost to me. After 2 days they gave me the car and it did not work more than 2 hours and the engine light started blinking and from one moment to another it reduced the speed to 20 miles per hour. I called the dealer and they told me to take them, but to this day they only replied that the car warranty would only cover 55% for the replacement of the damaged engine. They gave me the defective car after they changed the catalyst and I gave them a working car that now doesn't work and they only tell me that I have to pay 4000usd so that they can repair it and they haven't given me any report of the engine revision because it failed, after they changed the catalyst, only telling me that I should pay and then make a claim or sue the manufacturer. I delivered my car to them on June 27 and to date they have it in their possession, leaving me unable to move and me having to assume the costs of renting and paying friends to pass their cars to me. I hope they can see my case since they wrecked my car.

23 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 04/22/2022

So the vehicle wants to hesitate and buck violently to the point of nearly stalling out while accelerating and prevents the car from being able to merge into highway traffic in a safe manner and the surrounding years make and model are all on a recall due to a e. C. U. Required update for a necessary reflashing for the ability to be use the automobile in the way it's designer/designers can make make want h. The severity and frequency of the problems are embarrassing and frustrating to be scared of risking my life being injured in a stalled/stalling vehicle without a power supply to navigate.

24 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 02/18/2022

No warning lights came on during the whole time this happened . . . Purchased this car with 98 miles on it. . . . I had the car for 7 days . . Mind you I did not use the special features of the car like launch control or ngrin shifting . . . I did not take the car past 4k rpm as per the manual . . . @ 1100 miles exactly I had just filled up with gas and as I pull out the car dies on me . . . I go to start it . . It keeps trying to turn over . . And over and over . . . Till I smelt gas . . . . So I put the car into neutral and roll back to the curb I could see the trail of gas left behind it . . . . So I had it towed to a different dealer as the one who sold it to me . . Was not a option to take it to on the app. . . So the dealer calls me and tells me its the high pressure fuel pump . . . But funny thing is , that it had all ready been replaced before they sold me the car. . . . . Witch they did not disclose to me . . . . As soon as the dealer who sold me the after I filed a formal corporate complaint had the car towed to thier shop where it currently sits and its been over 2 weeks waiting on a part . . . But the fact is this is the second time they have had to replace the pump or line and the car only has 1100 miles on it . . . . .

25 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 02/07/2022

Vehicle was in 5th gear when massive decelleration occured (55 mph to 20 mph). Engine started to stall out. Downshifted to 4th, 3rd, etc. Was able to pull over to breakdown lane. No warning lights in the months prior. Car seviced regularly. Had just passed state inspection two months prior (no codes in log), Hyundai dealer had addressed campaign 966 a month prior (no codes in log), and then catastrophic failure of catalytic converter. Vehicle required tow to mechanic who stated "I've never seen anything like it. The cat was completely slagged out, like it must have been cherry red hot. Thank god it was freezing last night or the car could have caught fire. " no cel warnings at all on that night or any time prior. Believe this is directly tied to camp 966 engine monitoring logic issue.

26 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 12/26/2021

My 2015 Hyundai Veloster turbo had no open recalls. On 12/26/21, while stopped at a light, the car stalled, then started smoking, and caught fire almost instantly. There are known fire issues for similar models for which there are open recalls, but my car was not a part of these recalls.

27 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 05/07/2021

Since Nov/Dec 2020 low oil warning lite started flashing at 2 separate svc intervals for oil change maintenance. At service visit in Jan 2021 requested dealer to inspect for oil leaks. None were found but since then I began checking oil level regulary & found out the car was consuming excessive amount of oil…about half a qt every 250-300 miles. At next service appt to have oil change I informed dealer of my findings which he advised performing the 1000 mile consumption test & wait till after to change oil. He advised if vehicle fails consumption test Hyundai’s guidelines suggest a combustion chamber cleaning (at a cost of over $400)! my complaint is if the cleaning is part of Hyundai’s repair guidelines & there’s no other alternative to this step, (as referenced in TSB# 21-em-003h) why does the customer have to pay the $400+ to have it done if the customer’s vehicle has less than 100000 miles so it should still be covered under the 10 year/100000 mile powertrain warranty.

29 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 03/08/2021

Currently waiting on a remedy for this vehicle, the recall was issued on Dec 1, 2020, still no remedy available nor any help or information from any of the dealerships around me. The service department wasn't even aware of the recall.

30 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 01/31/2021

Hello, I believe there is an underlying issue with the Veloster 2013 that Hyundai has not addressed properly with their service campaign. I had received the service around 06/01/19 (I am not sure exactly when) and a year later have had the same exact problems this service was supposed to address. I have had engine stalls in the middle of the street near usc on a busy intersection and had to move the car by foot in fear of getting hit by another car. I've also had engine power issues that seem to have persisted. When this happened I took it into a mechanic to address the issue, their diagnosis was a bad coil pack for which they did a tune up (spark plugs, coil packs, oil filter). Shortly after the tune-up I had problems of the same misfiring issue where there would be no power to the engine and a slight knocking noise. I then took my car to hundai keyes mission hills to diagnose the problem this time and they said the same thing, bad coil pack. There have been known engine failures due to the ecu, and have read many anecdotal evidence that there is an issue with the ecu. I also believe this issue has caused my catalytic converter to fail prematurely as the misfires would send unburned fuel into the catalytic converter. I initially got in contact with a service manager at Hyundai consumer affairs on Feb 15th and he has finally called me today 03/15/19 after weeks of trying to get updates. The supervisor has deemed that this was out of warranty and that I would have to pay for it even after expressing my concerns that there might be an underlying issue that has not been resolved by the service campaign. This is a dangerous problem for other Veloster owners. And I fear that my engine will fail in the future. Here is the service campaign. Report receipt date: Mar 14, 2019 NHTSA campaign: 19v204000.

32 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 01/13/2021

I have had to replace the turbo and radiator. I have replaced the coil packs and spark plugs 3 times since I received the car and now the transmission is acting up. I bought the car Dec 2020 and it has left me stranded on the side of the road 4 times already from the engine malfunctioning.

33 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 07/29/2020

When stoppibg or coming to full complete stop car seems to feel like it is goibg to stall out and kind of shimmery and shakes a little right before stopping also when starting from a complete stop it alot of the time feels like it is going to stall out as well. There is alot of engine noise as well that does not seem like it is a good thing.

34 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 05/19/2020

My car stalled at a red light. Even though the engine was running and there were no mechanical lights on, the car wouldn't go when I pressed the gas. After turning the car off and on several times, it wouldn't move. It had to be pushed out of the street and after 20 minutes of resting, it worked again.

35 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

Failure Date: 02/11/2020

Engine cylinder misfires . Even after changing spark plugs and coil packs. Especially when eco mode is off(in montion, accelerating) . When traction control cuts power seems to also attribute to misfiring and which has lead to unsettling idle.
