Jaguar XK8 owners have reported 4 problems related to engine belts and pulleys (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Jaguar XK8

Failure Date: 04/23/2008

Failure of the secondary timing chain tensioners. This results in the need for a complete rebuild of the engine. I am told by the dealer that they have seen a few of these since it is poorly designed. When you research this on the net, it appears that the problem is known to Jaguar owners and occurs too frequently for it to be chance. Cost of inspection and fix prior to failure about $1200, price after failure $3,000 plus.

2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Jaguar XK8

Failure Date: 04/11/2007

Timing tensioner defect- 1998 Jaguar Xk8 with 50000 miles. Engine failed to start after loud popping noise. No previous issues prior. Cause-plastic timing tensioners failed, causing timing chain to break and damage pistons. Solution new engine. Dealer quoted $14,000. This car was regularly maintained. My mechanic stated he was aware of a problem with tensioners, and Jaguar had redesigned them for later models. This was a known defect on low mileage vehicles! there were many documented cases. Jaguar refused to acknowledge and offered no assistance.

3 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Jaguar XK8

Failure Date: 12/24/2004

My 1998 Xk8 Jaguar timing chain broke and ruined the engine requiring a new one for $11,000 with only 49,000 miles on it. I had taken it to the dealer for service the entire time. This is a very common problem occuring within the Jaguar line. Jaguar refuses to help and tries to keep it under wrap until the warranty expires. It is a well known design flaw that has cost tons of people thousands. My car also stalled without warning on the highway and this too is a common problem. Both of these could have caused me serious injury.

4 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Jaguar XK8

Failure Date: 04/12/2004

While driving 50 mph the timing chain broke which caused the vehicle to stall. The driver was able to coast to the side of the road out of traffic. The consumer stated that the timing chain is made with a plastic coating that is prone to failure. The failure was corrected in later models.
