The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while her daughter was driving approximately 45 mph both hood latches broke and the hood smashed her windshield. There was a tire pressure warning light illuminated. The police arrived on the scene and duck-taped the hood down. There was no police report file that the contact was aware of. The contact and her husband then arrived on the scene and drove the vehicle to their residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

2 Hood Latch problem of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

Tl the contact owned a 2020 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 69 mph in windy weather and passing another vehicle, the hood inadvertently unlatched. The hood ajar warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to allen samuels Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram of hutchinson (1421 e 30th Ave, hutchinson, KS 67502, (620) 665-5567) and was informed it was flex hood and working properly. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle was taken to marmie Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (1724 10th st, great bend, KS 67530, (620) 792-2571) where the hood was adjusted and the switch was replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted however, no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 3,900.

Failure Date: 11/06/2007

1997 Jeep Cherokee hood unlatched and flipped up striking the windshield. Consumer hit the median barrier because he could not see. Ohio traffic crash report #10-90-0800.

4 Hood Latch problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/13/2005

Consumer was driving about 45-50 mph and the hood popped up. They had opened the hood the night before, then they shut it, and made sure by trying to lift the hood. The consumer drove approximately 4 or 5 miles when the hood popped up. The consumer stated the night before it took several tries attempts to close the hood. It appeared that all three latches failed. The windshield wipers were damaged and it obstructed the consumers view.

5 Hood Latch problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/05/2005

While parked in the driveway, and after being driven for an hour, vehicle inadvertently caught on fire above the manifold. The fire smoldered and put itself out. Owner contacted the manufacturer, who sent an engineer to investigate. Owner was also told by the manufacturer that there was nothing they could do, and advised the owner to seek legal council. The technician replaced the cruise control cable, accelerator cable and hood latch cable.

Vehicle was going 50-55mph when hood flew back into windshield. Release rod broke, and the outer clamps failed, causing secondary hood latch to release as well. Dealer and manufacturer were notified.

Piston and springs are weak causing some parts of vehicle to fall on hands. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything. Consumer states the hood does not stay up as the hood springs or pistons were weak. The hood fell on hands while checking oil.

Failure Date: 07/02/2001

I was driving on expressway to work at 6am, in light traffic. Hood suddenly flew up, blocking my vision, slammed against the roof of the Jeep and folded. I slowed down and was able to pull of the road without hitting anything, or being hit by any other vehicles, in spite of severely impaired vision! we have contacted Chrysler and had the vehicle repaired at the dealer. Usaa (our insurance) has paid for all repairs with exception of the $250 deductable. The manufacturer is claiming "normal wear and tear". What would they be saying if there had been a fatality, which would have been certain during peak traffic.

Hood became unattached from the vehicle while driving. Cable must have snapped. Vision was blocked by hood. Consumer feels this is very dangerous because driver can't see where to go.

While driving at approximately 50 mph hood opened up w/o warning. Hood was not tampered with, and opened unexpectedly through both safety latches. Defect affected consumer's visibility on the highway, which almost led to an accident. Vehicle taken to dealer for repairs, they said that owner did not lube the latches, therefore the dealer/Chrysler is not at fault.

While driving 55 mph hood unexpectedly detached from the vehicle. Consumer was able to maintain control the vehicle, and pulled over. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that hood needed to be replaced due to corrosion.
