5 Seat Broken problem of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/26/2011

1997 Jeep Cherokee drivers seat back broke during low speed rear end collision. 2004 pontiac grand prix slid on slush at stoplight. 1997 Jeep Cherokee had no airbag deployment. The accident caused a cracked tail light, and minor scratches on tow hitch, and rear bumper skin, in addition to the seats being damaged. The 04 pontiac grand prix required a hood and bumper-skin, but no bumper support, radiator support, airbag deployment or other damage. The passenger seat frame of the 1997 Jeep is bent and presumably broken. Both require professional re-welding and repair, estimated at $250 per seat. Settled with driver out of court for wisconsin minimum damage waiver of $1000 moderate back pain resulted from collision from the driver, passenger was uninjured. The vehicle has no rust, and is in good overall condition. This was an obvious result of poor manufacturing techniques used in the seat construction.

6 Seat Broken problem of the 1998 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

1998 Jeep Cherokee se 2-door - front driver's seat frame broke at the front-left point where it mounts to the rails assembly. The seat had become a little wobbly in bumpy/uneven areas on the road (I live in new england where there are a lot of hills and the roads are not flat and smooth) and one day, coming over the bump at the end of a construction zone the seat made a popping noise and I was jarred toward the middle of the car. Now the seat totters from side to side depending on what way I am turning or the angle of the road/bumps. To correct this I will either have to purchase a new seat, which will be pretty difficult considering that this problem is very wide-spread so there are basically none of these seats available, or I will have to weld the seat frame back together where it broke. The last alternative would be to purchase an aftermarket seat, which is a little pricey at $250usd.

11 Seat Broken problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

My 1999 Jeep Cherokee has a broken driver's seat pan. I was coming to a red light and I heard a snap sound. I went to investigate and noticed that the metal seat pan is cracked all around the where the bolt holds it in the seat track. Now the seat rocks a little bit, and it's going to be a matter of time before the other corners crack due to the increased stress. I have not yet corrected the failure. But in order to do so, I will need a whole new seat. This is a safety issue because if these break, it will mean nothing is holding the seat in place. I know a lot of people in the Jeep community that have the same problem with the seat pans breaking.

12 Seat Broken problem of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

Driver side front seat frame broke on 2001 Jeep Cherokee causing seat back to recline on one side towards the rear. I own two identical Jeep Cherokees and it happened to both of them. There are many complaints about this on the internet. I called the dealer and was told there weren't any recalls on this. I think this is dangerous and could very likely cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and cause a serious accident. Please review and advise. Thank you.

13 Seat Broken problem of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/20/2009

As I was accelerating from a stop I heard a loud crack and the drivers side front seat broke from the base mount. The seat broke at one corner but did not come totally seperated. If it had totally broken free it could have caused a major accident as I was in heavy traffic when it broke. I have not yet fixed the issue and plan to do the repairs myself. This sounds like a very common problem for my make and model based on internet forums and I am very disappointed that Chrysler has not initiated a safety recall for this issue.

19 Seat Broken problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/15/2007

I sat down in the driver's seat and leaned slightly back against the backrest and the seat broke where it attaches to its rails. Upon inspection it was broken at three places on the frame of the chair itself. This could have been a major safety incident if it had happened while I was driving the vehicle. Jeep should issue a safety recall as this is a substandard part.

I own a 1999 Jeep Cherokee sport and the drivers side seat frame broke. Upon bringing it to an auto body shop the employee told me when he ordered the part the parts store told him that they had a lot of them being ordered for that vehicle. 29 Seat Broken problem of the 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/01/2002

The front left corner of the drivers seat has broken loose from the adjustment slide. This causes the seat to tilt back when accelerating. The metal is torn from around the bolt. The bolt is still intact. The upper left door hinge is also coming loose from the body. The weld that secures the hinge to the body is failing. I contacted the local dealer (not the one who I bought the car from) and the service manager told me that he had not seen these problems before. Since it is out of warranty he suggested I take it to a body shop. The fellow at the body shop informed me he has seen quite a few door hinge failures. He even had a Cherokee in the shop with the same problem. He also said the seat failure is not uncommon. I feel these are safety issues and the manufacturer should at least reimburse part of the cost of repair, if not fix it at no charge. The seat in particular is dangerous because if the other side breaks, I'll be laying down trying to drive!.

30 Seat Broken problem of the 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2001

The driver's seat cushion frame broke at the welds. This caused the front mount of the cushion frame to fracture. There was no way of knowing the welds had fractured until the lower mount finnally gave out. I was lucky that this happened when I just got into the Jeep. If I had been driving down the freeway, and the seat broke, I would have lost control. I went the my local Jeep dealership, showed them the broken seat. There was nothing they could, but were willing to order the part. Of which there were only three available in the nation. I tried to locate the part used on the national web of salvage yards. On every Jeep of this year at the salvage yard, the front driver's seat was already missing. I believe this is a safety issue and should be looked into. I still have the broken seat cushion frame for further analysis. I just wonder how many accidents this problem has caused, and were blamed onto something or someone else? thank you for reading and considering this note.

31 Seat Broken problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/19/1999

The driver's seat has broken and has become very wobbly and unstable. I drive the vehicle normal and I am not an obese person. The seat started out just making creaking noises, then it broke in one spot and has since broken in a second spot. After doing some extensive research I have found that there are a lot of people complaining about this, yet there is no recall. Price to fix is between $400-800 at a dealership. If I were to get in an accident with the seat in the condition it is in, I could have worse injuries than if the seat was how it should be. I think that due to the fact of how many people have this problem with the Cherokee/grand Cherokee, there needs to be a recall since it's a safety issue.

32 Seat Broken problem of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee

My company owns a fleet of 1998-2000 Jeep Cherokees used as marked security vehicles. At least three driver bucket seats have broken while the vehicle was being driven- certainly a potential cause of accidents. The metal where the seat is bolted to the floor of the vehicle tears, causing the front right corner of the seat to come loose and pitch up.
