This Jeep Compass was purchased for our college age daughter in March 2019, today while driving, her rear driver side wheel made a loud noise then felt like it dropped and upon getting stopped, she didn't wreck thank god, as she was pulling into our drive. Upon inspection it was discovered that her rear crossmember had rusted into. I searched and found that there had at one time been a recall on this particular part due to excessive rust from the salt belt states. We are in ky but when we purchased the vehicle it was titled in michigan, which is most definitely in that salt belt. I am not sure why this recall was not completed by the former owner but I believe it should be corrected no matter the age of the vehicle. This could have caused my daughter to be in a very serious accident. We had no information about any recall that had previously been issued.
When driving over bumps you can clearly hear the suspension or struts. You can hear them also while just driving down the road. Sometimes it sounds like the bolts are gonna come out. It also have some kind of creaky noise sometimes as well.
Rear cross bar axle is defective. The wheel suspension is deteriated to the point that the wheels protrude ouward from the vehicle causing extreme wear on the inside part of the rear tires to the point of wires on radial tires are exposed. The outside part of the tires show minimum wear. Mechanics say this cross bar axle is poor quality steel or steel that wasn't cured and finished properly. The cross bar axle is literally eroding with holes occurring right through the axle itself. Fear is the car is becoming too dangerous to drive without fear that upon hitting a bump the rear wheels will spread apart and the car fall to the ground.
Driving on a highway at 35 mph and braking for a red light the Jeep front end collapsed and the vehicle served to the left. Dealer inspection revealed the front crossmember broke due to corrosion. The rear crossmember was also corroded. The undercarriage of the vehicle sustained excessive & expensive damaged. Chrysler has no recall on this corrosion problem although it has issued an action under 23-012-14. Customer notification would prevent any possible accidents and undercarriage damage but no such notification is in effect. A service visit on 10/2016 with inspection did not alert the owner or dealer to this dangerous condition of corrosion of a critical structure of the vehicle.
K frame by driver frontwheel so rusted crack completely in half. Wheel ended up facing 90 degree to left. Wheel and frame almost separated from Jeep. Strut only holding it on. Good thing I was only going about 5mph in parking lot.
I have replaced the front and back suspension. I bought this used, and I think I was not given the proper information regarding the car.
I drove for several hours when my car started sliding to the side. I stopped to check and both my back tires were angled inward and completely ruined. I took the car to a mechanic for alignment, but he could not move the parts due to an excessive amount of rust. He mentioned that the whole subframe and arms had heavy corrosion and whole and the pieces could break anytime soon and I should not be driving the car. An extended warranty is applicable to the k frame for the model of my car but Jeep will not honor the warranty on my particular vehicle. I haven't drove the car since.
The car began pulling in the front right tire intermittently. I was a half mile from home, so I turned around to go back home. As I drove into the driveway, the front right tire and entire front right suspension completely fell down (almost completely off) and the tire was pushed sideways and into the frame of the wheel well on the car. The car came to an immediate and abrupt halt. Had I been driving on the road when this occurred, my car would have flipped and I would have crashed and could have been killed! this is a huge safety problem and defect that I believe should be part of a recall. I have read many reports of problems with this model/year concerning the wheel bearings, lower control arms, and tie rods. I have great concern driving this vehicle in the future after it is repaired.
On June 13 2011 my Compass with only 17085 miles on it, had cracked a front spring that had grinded a ring around my pass side tire. I was not aware of the problem, but I noticed some noise in the front end so I brought it to a dealer for service. I was told what had happened and how surprised the service dept. Was with this incident. They told me they could not believe it. It took a while but after some complaints and disgust with the dealership, but more so with Chrysler, everything did get covered buy the 2 parties. Not to mention the fact that my vehicle was and still is under warranty. Today is January 3 2013 and guess what? I now have to contact the dealer and probably Chrysler again. My Compass is still under warranty with only 27450 miles and now the driver side front spring is cracked and is beginning to do the exact same thing to my other tire again. I don't know what the dealer will say or do but I will contact them first thing in the morning, they are closed at this time. I was just wondering if this is a common problem or just a fluke? to me this seems like it should be a possible defect and put under a recall. If anyone of these tires would have been warn down enough and a tire would have blown out, there could have been a very serious and or deadly accident.
Have my vehicle in for inspection and found that the ball joints, tie rods, rocker arms, brakes and rotors had to be replaced on the front and brakes had to be replaced on the back.
2007 Jeep Compass. At approx 100k miles I took it to the dealer for routine service. Technician informed me that the tie rods were bad on front driver side, showed me play in the wheel. Said it needed to be fixed. I agreed to have new tie rods put on. One month later the car began to handle erratically, I took back to the same dealer and asked to inspect their previous work and search for the handling/steering problem. After two hours they informed me they could find nothing wrong. 7 months later, while driving with my 6 month old in the car the front left control arm broke and the front driver side wheel actually broke off at the lower ball joint while the car was in motion. Replacing control arms and ball joints on both sides plus two new front tires netted a total repair cost of $1400 . . . This is on top of the previous repair cost to replace the tie rods.
Loss of control where the car jerked as if I had hit a patch of ice (in the spring with 50ã‚â° weather) anytime I steered to the left. Have had the ball joints/control arms replaced 4 times since.
My wife's 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4 ltd was taken to our local Jeep dealership in edgewood, MD for a routine oil change. A mechanic on duty notified us that in addition to the oil change, we would need to have the front drivers side ball joint (lower) replaced because it was "loose". The mechanic described the problem as something serious that needed to be taken care of immediately since the wheel could fall off in extreme conditions. Less extreme conditions were described to us as leading to a possible loss of steering control. The mechanic also mentioned to us that this was a common occurrence with the Jeep Compasses he has worked on. We took immediate action to fix the car to keep it drivable by having the dealership replace the ball joint the following day - safety was our primary concern. We took steps to contact Chrysler's corporate headquarters to see if this would be something they would consider replacing since our car was beyond warranty (61,000 miles) - they dismissed our claim and would not reimburse us for the work done or the replacement parts. Having done some research, it seems most Jeep models from 2007 through 2009 have been experiencing ball joint problems leading to recalls - the Compass is not yet on the recall list. A ball joint failing after 2 years of owning the car and all highway miles (no off-roading, no city driving, no bumpy roads, etc. ) just seems very absurd to us. This seems to me like it?s more of an issue with defective parts placed in the Compass than an issue of wear and tear. The consequences of a failure such as this while my pregnant wife was driving the car could have been disastrous. If the mechanic on duty is seeing this part failure in more than one Compass, it could mean a bigger problem exists, presenting a danger to many Compass owners. Please look into this!.
I have a 2007 Jeep Compass. And for the past year I have had several issues with the vehicle stalling when I am decelerating or stalling when at a complete stop. Some times the vehicle jerks so bad that my seat belt locks up. I took it to the dealership where I bought it and they said there was nothing wrong with it but that the tech's are unfamiliar with the new transmission in this vehicle. I also have problems with the driver side seatbelt it clicks when I put it on but then all of a sudden it will come right off. I had a screw stuck in my front tire today and could not get the front tire off when we finally got it off we figured out why it would not come off there is rust. I am very unhappy with the problems and scared that the vehicle will stall when I am on a major highway.
I went in to get my oil changed and my tires rotated and was told my car is unsafe to drive and here is what they put on my invoice (verbatim) "needs both lower control arms passenger side front has a really bad ball joint and left outer tie rod end is bad also price to replace both outer tie rod ends and both lower ball joints $1083 plus tax and that includes the alignment!!!!!!!!! vehicle is unsafe to drive with ball joint is this condition!!!!!!!!!" (literally with all the exclamation marks. ) I took the car somewhere else to get repaired (for half the cost) however I believe this is a part failure as I have less than 50k miles.
