11 problems related to steering gear box have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving in reverse consumer lost steering control. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the mechanic determined that the problem was caused by the main bolts shearing off from the steering gear box.
Steering gear box failed, while driving a loud knocking noise from under floorboard and then lost control of vehicle. . . . Could have caused terrible accident on the freeway.
Bolts that hold gear box to unibody frame sheared in half while parking with a resulting total loss of steering control.
While turning the steering wheel, consumer heard a loud pop, consumer examined vehicle and found two large hardened bolts which fastened the entire steering gear box mechanism to the frame had severed, dealer replaced the steering box, bolts, lower radiator hose, and coolant.
While driving noticed steering getting loose, dealer discovered 2 bolts that held steering box had sheared off. Bolts were replaced. Then, on 8 July 2001, while driving 5 mph steering went out. Consumer had no control, had vehicle towed to dealer. Steering had collapsed.
Steering failure due to poor casting on the rear mount bolt for the steering gear box, resulting in shearing of the forward mount bolt which released the assembly. Dealer has been notified.

While making a left or right turn there is a very loud knocking noise coming from under the floorboard on the driver's side. Dealer stated that the problem was due to a worn out steering box. The steering box has not been replaced.
