110 problems related to automatic transmission park/neutral start switch have been reported for the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

Vehicle jumped out of park and backed up toward a building. I was out of the vehicle and when I tried to stop it by putting my foot on the brake, I slipped and the vehicle ran over my foot and broke it. It continued to crash into a retail store.

After just starting engine and partially stepping out of vehicle it suddenly moved backwards in reverse. Emergency brake was on, and he was able to throw gear into neutral, preventing any damage. This was the only occurance of this problem.

Consumer put key in ignition, gave a little gas, and vehicle lurched into reverse crashing into a building causing damage to the rear of the vehicle, consumer states vehicle was still in park at time of accident, luckily there were no injuries.

While vehicle was in park position it jumped from park to reverse, causing vehicle to hit another vehicle, damage was estimated at four thousand dollars. Consumer tried to jump in vehicle, but was knocked down, consumers foot was caught in the door and was almost run over by Jeep.

I put my Jeep in park, and ran to a mailbox. When I turned around, I saw that my Jeep was driving in reverse. Originally, I thought that maybe I somehow or other left in reverse and jumped out of the car, but I know that I didn't do that. No one would belive me then. I put the Jeep in park at a valet parking area in new brunswick, NJ. My wife and I exited the Jeep. While I was receiving my ticket, the Jeep began rolling backwards. I was able to get back into the Jeep and hit the brakes inches before hitting the car behind. I wrote the incident off to human error. The Jeep was definetely in reverse when I re-entered. I am not sure if this is related to the current findings but thought I should report it.

After shifting into park noticed fuel door left open. Within 30 seconds or less vehicle started to roll backward. Tried to jump into vehicle, but open door pushed consumer out of the way. Vehicle commenced to pick up speed and spinned out of control until it ran into the car wash building. Dealer service dept. Notified , rude and would not provide phone number for Chrysler. Two other accidents occurred due to defect.
I was at a chevron gas station about to pump gas. My grand Jeep cherokee was parked on a flat surface and in the park position. My sister was confined by her seat belt in the front passenger seat when I got out and walked around the driver's side to begin pumping gas, leaving the driver's side door open. As I was about to pull the gas lever the car started rolling backwards towards me at what appeared to be quite a rapid speed especially given that I had left it in park. Miraculously, the car was stopped from hitting oncoming traffic on westwood blvd. By the open driver's door which almost pulled off upon impact with one of the gas pumps and probably averted a really horrendous collision. I have spent time researching this particular incident and have concluded that there is a very serious defect in the "transmission interlock" systems of grand Jeep cherokees. I have found many other grand Jeep cherokees reporting that same, or similar, incidents some of which have resulted in deaths. I have written numerous letters to daimler/chrylser setting forth the particulars of the accident in which I was involved, but they have turned a deaf ear. I am personally so terrified of getting back in my car that I chose to lease another car (while broke and unemployed and paying the lease om the grand Jeep cheroke), rather than risk life and limb by driving that car again -- something I refuse to do. I ask you please to take this matter very seriously and do a thorough investigation into serious defect that I believe exists in chysler's Jeep cherokee's "transmission interlock system".
