The person that examined the vehicle, believed the fire was a direct result of a defective rear-mounted unprotected zj body fuel tank system. The individuals in the vehicle were involved in an accident, which they would have survived, if it weren't for the design of the fuel tank.
Cannot fill fuel tank to top ( when pump automatically shuts off) without having fuel leak from top of tank for about 30 minutes. Have replaced fuel tank module and gasket. Dealer can find no reason for problem. Happens at each fuel fill.
1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee (NHTSA campaign id number: 97v194000) recall for fuel sending unit. Dealer tells me that the unit was replaced in 2002, yet today the replaced part is failing just like the original and the dealer expects me to pay for it even though this part was supposed to be the fix for the original recall. .
Fuel gauge reads as full when empty. This was already involved in a recall of my make, model and year vehicle, but apparently not of my VIN number. I'd like to get the recall expanded to include all vehicles with this problem.
Consumer complained about fuel gauge and fuel tank problems. Fuel gauge indicated that tank was full, when in reality it had no gas. Also, there was recall 97v194000 concerning fuel tank. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that there was no recall, and there was nothing they could do about it.
When the gas tank was 1/4 full and computed miles read more then 50 miles left, we ran out of gas. The car stopped working and completely shut off due to running out of gas.
When the gas tank was filled to it's capacity, gas leaked from the top side of the tank and filled the nozzle connection to the tank. Daimler Chrysler refused responsibility.
The fuel gauge did not read the correct amount of fuel in tank. Which was due to a defective fuel sending unit on tank. Related recall 97v194002, however the vehicle identification number was not included.
The plastic gas tank was defective which caused the fuel pump to fail.
Vehicle's fuel gauge read incorrectly which caused the vehicle to stall while driving. While driving at 45 mph the vehicle started to run rough then died out. The consumer was unable to restart the vehicle. The consumer added two gallons of gas and vehicle started right up. The gas tank read 1/4 full and there was no low fuel warning. The second occurrence was like the first except it occurred on the highway while traveling approximately 65 mph.
Gas gauge didn't properly indicate vehicle's fuel level. Three dealers diagnosed defect as the fuel sending unit located within the fuel tank. Related recall 97v194000. Consumer's v. I. N. Was not included. Ph.
When consumer fueled vehicle, the gauge reading indicated that truck had more fuel than it actually did. Related recall 97v194000 consumer's v. I. N. Not included. Ph.
The gas gauge occasionally dropped to empty and the buzzer would sound, consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed there was a recall, however vehicle was not included due to the VIN. Ts.
The gas gauge would read full when there was no gas in the tank, consumer was informed by dealership there was a recall, however VIN was not included. Ts.
Problems with gas gauge. Consumer feels unsafe driving long distances. Please provide any further information.
Nar 02/25/2003. The consumer had the fuel sending fixed before a recall was issued. When the consumer called to inquire about reimbursement, he was told his vehicle was not included.
Fuel gauge misreads the amount of fuel in the vehicle. There is a recall on the fuel sending unit, however this vehicle is not affected due to the VIN.
Fuel level sending unit has same failure as meentioned in recall 90v19400, however vehicle was not included in recall due to VIN.
Fuel guage misreads the amount of gas in the vehicle. Consumer states that there is a recall on the same part on similar models in same year, his vehicle should be included in this recall.
This VIN# has not been included in the recall for this make, model & year. Dealer has had to replace unit at a cost of $288. 00 but will not honor recall. I was advised to contact you and ask to have this VIN# included with recall. No safety defect listed.
Fuel gauge reads inaccurate amounts of fuel. Manufacturer stated vehicle was not included in recall due to vehicle being manufactured 3 days earlier than vehicles included in recall. The fuel tank level sending unit failed which caused the fuel gauge to display an inaccurate fuel level.
Had completed filling tank with fuel and was driving home when consumer started smelling fuel. After arriving home, parked vehicle, and checked beneath. Noticed fuel was leaking from top of the fuel tank. Had not contacted dealership or mechanic.
Vehicle experienced total failure at 65 mph. I was told this was due to a corroding fuel tank, caused by additives used by gas manufacturers. Apparently the corroding tank "pieces/slivers/shards/etc. " clog the fuel filter/fuel pump and does not allow fuel to reach the engine. Chrysler has since changed the construction of their tank to account for this problem. However, I had to wait in excess of 2 weeks for a tank because of a (quote form the dealer) "national backorder" on fuel tanks. Upon further investigation, I have found this to be a widespread problem (it's what's causing the backorder, as best as I can determine). The warranty company I have extended coverage through (wynns), told me that they are so familiar with it that they have instituted a procedure to deny any claim arising to Chrysler tanks since it is a problem stemming from the Chrysler design. My real problem arises from the fact that while this issue is so far reaching to cause a national backorder on Chrysler tanks, getting Chrysler as a corporation to admit the problem is impossible (of course) although the local Jeep dealer is aware of it. If it is a known problem, I as a consumer should have received some notice about potentially corrosive tanks, or perhaps there should be a recall on this item. The fuel tank failure causes a complete stoppage of the vehicle, as I learned travelling 65 mph on rte. 81s in pennsylvania with my 7 month pregnant wife and 1. 5 year old son in the car. I thankfully was able to get the car to the side of the road, but it was inoperable thereafter. I have since had the tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, and O2 sensor replaced at a cost of $1023. While I would like to see Chrysler halp me out with a portion of this since it is the tank design/construction that caused the failure, I ultimately would like to see them alert their customers about the potential of the vehicle shutting down.
Consumer was traveling on highway and vehicle shutdown without prior warning, consumer pulled over and gas tank had 3/4 of gasoline, dealership was aware of problem, the sending unit was defective, vehicle ran out of gasoline due to a faulty sending unit. Consumer stated the gas tank was empty even the guage showed over 100 miles to empty.
Recall 97 v 194 000/fuel level sending unit: vehicle sending false fuel level reading. Dealer and manufacturer were notified, they informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under recall. Consumer stated vehicle has run out of gas twice.
Consumer was calling in regard to NHTSA recall 97v194002n/ manufacturer's recall 755. While attempting to pull into traffic vehicle ran out of gas, although gas gauge read 1/4 of a tank. Dealer has been contacted for this problem, but refused to remedy problem free of charge even though vehicle was experiencing same problem. Consumer's vehicle was manufactured three days after the cut-off date as stated on recall. Please provide further details. When the driver depresses the gas the vehicle bogs down and then takes off, the driver's door dome light is inoperative intermittently due to open circuit, dealer replaced dome light switch. Nlm.
Vehicle stalled due to running out of fuel while the fuel gauge showed 1/4 tank of fuel remaining. Manufacturer informed consumer his vehicle was not included in recalls 97v194000, 97v194001, or 97v194002 for fuel sending unit. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Fuel gauge showed over 1/4 tank when vehicle ran out of fuel in traffic. There is a recall on Jeeps for this problem, but Chrysler says mine isn't covered even though it was manufactured right in the middle of the recall dates. ( 12/96).
While driving 70 mph vehicle suddenly stalled. Towed to dealer who noticed the vehicle was out of fuel, yet fuel gauge showed 1/2 a tank. Fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. There was recall 97v194002, but per Chrysler this vehicle was not affected due to VIN. The failed part was on order, and was not part of the recall. The sudden stalling of the vehicle makes driving it very dangerous.
97 v 194 002/fuel level sending unit: vehicle fuel level sending unit indicating significantly more fuel in the tank than is actually present. May not be aware that vehicle is low of fuel, and increasing risk of a crash if vehicle stops due to no fuel. Manufacturer was notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was not covered under recall due to VIN.
Vehicle has same problems as recall 97v194002 . Fuel tank mounted fuel level sending unit accuracy has degraded, causing vehicle to indicate that more fuel is in reserve than is actually present. Manufacturer has advised that this vehicle was not included in recall due to VIN.
Fuel guage is not registering correct level of fuel in vehicle. Dealership informed her that it sounded like fuel sending unit could possibly be defective, but her vehicle was not included in recall 97v194000. The part that Chrysler sent to mechanic was the recall kit part, vehicle was manufacturered 6 months after recall, however still experienced exact problem of recalled vehicles.
Fuel gauge is no longer reading correctly, it goes from empty to full, etc. There was a recall on fuel sending unit, but this vehicle was not affected.
The problems with the fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit started several months after the vehicle was purchased. The vehicle would stall and/or jerk on the highway as though it was running out of gas. We thought that we must have just purchased some bad gas (water in the gas tank) so we really did not think there was a real problem. Also, the distance til empty (dte) digital gauge has always fluctuated up and down with its readings. The problem was especially noted when the vehicle contained 1/4 or less tank of gas. Through research, we found that a fuel tank sending unit recall (#755) was issued for 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee built through June 1, 1997. Our vehicle was built July 1997. Our vehicle, and probably many more 1997 vehicles, should have been included in the recall. At this point, we have no recourse adsent of a recall on our VIN number.
Fuel gauge is not giving an accurate amount of fuel in the tank. Dealership is aware of the problem. The owner states that the malfunctioning fuel sender should have been part of recall 755 because it is failing again after being replaced.
