As per NHTSA campaighn number 97v194000 . The recall only covers Jeeps from Sep 1996 to Nov 1996 my Jeep was manufactured in June 1996 and it has the same problem that the Jeeps in your recall has. We just recently purchased the Jeep and my wife almost crashed because the Jeep was showing 3/4 0f a tank and the Jeep sharply decelerated on the interstate in heavy traffic causing her to be ran off the road. Not to mention the hassle of being stuck on the side of the road. The dealor as usual was not cooperative and said too bad it is not covered due to the month of the recall vehicles. Ran out of fuel on major hiway in rush hour traffic due to fuel gauge failure. Gauge showed 3/4 full.
Fuel gauge reads a 25 to a half of tank; but, vehicle wiil run out of gas. Dealer said that vehicle was recalled under 97v194000 for the fuel level sending unit. But, problem is still not fixed.
Consumer is having the same problem as mentioned in recall 97v194v002. Consumer states that tank reads more gas than what is actually in tank.
Fuel gauge reads inaccurately , cannot determine the correct amout of gas in tank due to a defective sending unit. Vehicle VIN# is not included in recall 97v194002, but has same defect.

Was driving on highway at 60 mph when vehicle cut out. Fuel guage read 1/4 tank, but vehicle would not restart. Vehicle was towed to dealer who said the fuel sending unit was bad. Although there was a recall for this type of failure, dealer said vehicles made in 8/96 were not covered under recall. Called Chrysler, but they would not pay for repairs.
Apparently, there was a recall of certain 1997 vehicles for the fuel sending unit and the brake system has had the power booster replaced another time by the previous owner. Recall 97v194000. 002.
The gas tank was replaced due to leakage.

When gas tank is filled uo it leaks gas from the top of tank all over the place. Called a Jeep dealer and was told it would take 5 to 7 working days to check it out. Owner removed the gas tank and found the fuel pump gasket had been damaged at factory upon installion of the fuel pump. Owner has corrected problem.
I have had the following failures: fuel guage/ brakes (3) times/engine mount, and water pump, brought the vehicle in (5) times before they fixed the transmission, rear windshield wipers quit working, and then restarted. Also cd player died. Is this a lemon?.
Recall work on the fuel gauge completed, however fails to register correctly. (97v-194) yh.
Recall repair of the fuel gauge failed, many attempts have been made to fix it. However failed. Fuel gauge shows empty when in reality it has fuel. (97v194000).
Recall 97v19402//mrn 755// the recall notification was received and vehicle was taken in for repairs on 25-Jun-98/ 17-Jul-98/ 27-Jul-98, and again on 26-Aug-98, for the same repair work. A total of four sending units have been installed, and the vehicle is still not fixed. The problem still exists.
Received recall notice 97v194002 & notified dealership. Repairs done on fuel sending unit. Drove vehicle & unit failed. Took vehicle back to dealer & another unit put on. Was driving vehicle & once again sending unit failed. Took it back to dealer, and that unit replaced with another. The 3rd sending unit failed on vehicle.
The vehicle would not start when gas is lower than 1/8 of a tank. Yh.
When driving vehicle, lost power because gas gauge stated that there was quarter of a tank left, but there was not. Road side assistance had to come out to stranded vehicle. Told consumer that this model has a fuel sensor problem. This defect can result in an accident if it was to lose power in heavy traffic. Repairs complete due to recall 97v194.
Exhaust pipe bent & rubbed against the plastic gas tank which caused a hole that allowed a leak. Took to dealer & was informed owner needs metal piece between tank & exhaust. Manufacturer not taking responsibility of financial replacement. Consumer was never made aware of the skip plate option, requesting reimbursment. Transmission has a pause when upshifting from 2 to 3, when in 4wd, the left wheel grinds when turning. The right front power lock made a grinding noise when power door locks were actuated, dealer installed new door latch assembly. Steering wheel was not centered, causing vehicle to drift to the left while driving.
The fuel gauge reads 1/4 full when the tank is actually empty. This incident almost caused a crash. A new sender unit has been installed by dealership.
The contact owns a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact observed a fuel leak after the vehicle was parked for a short period of time. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on three separate occasions for diagnostic testing. The technician recommended that the fuel tank not be consumed to the full capacity and that the fuel leak was not hazardous. Brakes squeeky and vibration when braking worst at high speed, vibration problem very bad, ran out of fuel with 1/2 tank showing, replaced meter rod in the tank.

The dealer indicated that only one recall applied to the consumer's vehicle and made the necessary repairs. The consumer believes that the fuel system sending unit recall should also apply since his vehicle exhibits symptoms of that recall (recall# 97v194000).
Fuel gauge did not register the correct amount of fuel, which nearly caused a crash on an interstate highway. Owner has contacted manufacturer about recall 97v194000. Owner was told that there was no record of recall. Problem has not been corrected. Please provide any further information.
Fuel sending unit was replaced after I got stuck. Dealer would not assure me that the new unit would solve the problem. It was there advice that I not let the gas tank below 1/4 tank.
