Automatic Transmission Park/neutral Start Switch problems of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee - part 1

Nhtsa recall 02 v 053 00/recall b02 concerning inadvertent vehicle movement: vehicle inadvertently jumped out of gear while parked and idling with two children in vehicle. Vehicle continued through two fences, and hit a parked car and a house. Manufacturer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

While vehicle was in idle it went into reverse and ran into a street sign. Contacted dealer.

Vehicle was in park when it suddenly went into reverse and hit a beam in garage. Then, took off forward, hitting a wall. Please provide any further information.

Vehicle was parked with engine running, emergency brake not applied. It went into reverse on its own, and hit a building. Damage unknown at this time. No injuries.

Engine was running, emergency brake not applied, vehicle went backward on it's own into the garage. No injuries, damage to vehicle was $2121. 00 .

Prior to the recall, NHTSA campaign id 02v053000, vehicle jumped out of park rolled back and caused damage to the vehicle. Consumer is asking reimbursement for the damage sustained.

After leaving vehicle in idle, vehicle started to roll back and ran into another vehicle. Contacted dealer who was not willing to do anything.

Some thing has to be done about this problem, the vehicle almost backed it self into my neibors living room. Not to mention if a person had been in the way they could have been killed of seriously injured. This problem should be corrected as soon as possible, lives and property damage is at stake.

While vehicle was parked in parking lot put vehicle in park and vehicle rolled backwards. Consumer ran to try to stop vehicle ,it dragged consumer a distance before consumer could finally stop vehicle. Have not contacted dealer.

Ea 01 017/roll away in park: while parked and idling on a slight incline driveway vehicle jumped out of gear and rolled into reverse, resulting in a collision, dealer/manufacturer contacted.

Pe 01 021/roll away in park: while parked and idling in driveway vehicle inadvertently jumped out of gear, rolled into reverse, and hit consumer, then struck a tree before stopping, consumer sustained minor injuries. Prior to the incident, for two days the rpm was at 3000 on the highway, the engine sounded like it never shifted into the final gear for cruising.

While vehicle was idling in the park gear, it started rolling in reverse. Consumer was knocked down, and the vehicle rolled over her legs when she attempted to open door and stop movement. Vehicle moved at an unknown distance, and struck a mailbox before being stopped by a neighbor. Dealer has not examined vehicle for this problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.

Pulled into rear of own business. Put vehicle in park, went inside. When wife returned, vehicle struck a post about 100+ feet away breaking drivers side tail light.

Consumer had parked vehicle with engine running and shift in park. Then, stepped out of vehicle, and noticed that it started rolling backward on a flat road. Then, vehicle stopped at the curve. Consumer noticed that shift had moved from park to drive without a prior warning. Please provide more information.

Vehicle was parked engine running, emergency brake not applied, and vehicle suddenly went backward, consumer tried to jump into vehicle to stop it, but was hit by the door, vehicle hit a cement curb, then hit a tree. Consumer suffered minor injuries. Damage to vehicle unknown.

Vehicle was parked with engine running, park brake was not engaged, when it suddenly went backward about 15 ft down a slight incline, hitting a tree and tipped on its side. Consumer was able to turn off engine. Consumer sprained thumb, consumer noticed back up light lights were on as it was laying on its side.

The car had been in park (idleing), in the driveway, but popped into reverse after I stepped out for a moment. As the car rolled backwards, along side another car in the driveway, the drivers side door (which I'd left open since I was simply grabbing something 20 feet away) was inverted (folded backwards) due to the impact from the other parked car. Due to the accident, there is major damage to my door, my front left panel, and the front right panel of the car that had been parked in the driveway.

On September 27, 2001, I parked my Grand Cherokee in front of my place of business. I left the car idling in park, while I ran into the building to drop something off at the front desk. I was gone for approximately 20 seconds. When I returned my car was rolling backwards through the parking lot. It traveled 214 feet, running up over a curb, over a stop sign and hitting a parked car before stopping.

Vehicle was in park and jumped into reverse, hitting a pole, contacted dealer, and Chrysler sent out a representative to test vehicle in a special investigation, and stated nothing was wrong.

On 9/20/01 at 12:15am I was proceeding north bound on I-95 and pulled off to the side of the road at mile marker 71. 7 after hearing a noise under the Jeep. I put the vehicle in park with and left the engine running. I was on a flat surface, aprrox. 15 feet off the right shoulder of the road. I exited the vehicle and took 1 or 2 steps toward the rear when the drivers door hit me, throwing me toward the seat, where I became wedged between the door frame and floor below the seat, the vehicle was in reverse. I was drug approx. 20-30 feet before I became dislodged from the vehicle. The vehicle continued in reverse. I was able to get up and run after the vehicle and re-enter the Jeep and apply the brake. While the vehicle was in reverse it ran over a 2 1/2 metal pole with a reflector on it. The Jeep sustained front and rear bumper damage and both needed to be replaced. The injuries I sustained 1. Major bruising to my to my chest, breasts and both arms. 2. Laceration to my right elbow. 3. Major abrasion (road rash) to my lower abdomen. 4. Abrasions to both knees. I contacted daimler Chrysler and on 11/1/01 an investigator by the name of john tedder came to evaluate the vehicle. On 10/14/01 I received a letter from daimler Chrysler, which stated that after they reviewed the inspection report they were unable to duplicate my concerns about the vehicle. Their inspection revealed that the accelerator pedal, throttle cable, return springs and all associated parts were operating properly. It also noted that the parking pawl and brake inter-lock systems were also operating. Therefore, they decline any responsiblity associated with the incident. Can NHTSA please keep me informed if possible to any investigative reports you may have?.

Transmission popped into reverse from park.

Driving on the freeway, the gear suddenly jumped to reverse from drive, the rpm accelerated to 5500 and teh gas dropped. There was a noise like metal was scratching against another metal. And the brakes were also not functioning properly.

Car went from park into reverse on 3 different occasions while car was running and began rolling back. The last time almost resulted in hitting my son who was walking behind the vehicle.

Vehcile went into reverse after being placed in park, rolled into pole and damaged drivers door and driver front quarter panel.

Vehicle was stopped and put into park. When my wife got out of the car, it began to roll backwards. It rolled across the street and hit a fence, causing minor damage to the bumer. She tells me this is the 3rd time this has happened, but on several other occasions, she has put the car into park and found that it did not stay there. She was still in the car and was able to jam the shift into park.

Lever will shift from drive one to drive two. Dealer is inspecting vehicle at owner's expense. Please provide additional information.

While taking out a stroller and putting it on side, parking pawl jumped from park to reverse, making vehicle to crash into a tree. Consumer had contacted manufacturer, and they said they will send a technician to dealer area to inspect vehicle. The gear shift would stick due to a design flaw.

I left the vehicle idling in park in my driveway. I walked across the road to get my mail. When I got back into my vehicle, it started backing up. I slammed on the brakes to try to stop it. It went backwards across the road, down an incline, and stopped when it ran into my neighbor's fence.

Consumer placed vehicle in park in driveway. She stepped out and was behind the vehicle. Vehicle jumped out of gear and rolled forward down driveway. Consumer then jumped into vehicle attempting to stop it, but was only able to steer it away from traffic and children. But, it went into a tree which caused severe damage to vehicle.

Transmission would slip out of gear and rpms would rise. This would cause vehicle to jerk forward while driving. Problem only happens when gears are between 2nd & 3rd, and traveling between 25 and 45mph.

When putting vehicle in park it would slip out of gear . Also, can't start vehicle unless it is in neutral or pushed back into park.
