Two problems related to latches/locks/linkage have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Driver door latch failed due to splitting metal in door. Door opened at highway speed. After the event I researched the problem and found that it is a very common occurrence. This is highly dangerous and need to be addressed immediately.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When the contact attempted to open the door, the front driver's side door handle fell off of the vehicle. The failure prevented him from exiting the vehicle from the passenger compartment. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the entire door panel at the cost of over $160. Secondly, the technician stated that the component failed because it was made out of pot metal. The VIN and mileages were unknown.
