Ten problems related to manifold/header/muffler/tail pipe have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Recently went to have my vehicle inspected and was told that failed due to a cracked exhaust manifold. Unable to drive my vehicle now until its repaired.
Exhaust manifold has cracked. Local dealer says this is common and will replace with after market manifold. They use after market because factory manifold has a design flaw.

Most owners, as in my case, find out too late. There seems to be increasing and recurring incidents with the 4. 0l engines. Chrysler redesigned the 1999 models without notifying 1998 owners of the manifold problem. Chrysler is not willing to pay for any of the $1200 plus it will cost me to repair.
Broken exhaust manifold, allowing exhaust gases to exit exhaust system. Allowing gases to enter passenger compartment possibly causing death from carbon monoxide poisoning. This is the second time that I had to replace this manifold. At a cost of $1127. 00 each time.
