21 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I received a recall regarding the tow hitch to protect the gas tank in rear end collisions. I took the vehicle to hertrich of pocomoke, my closest Jeep/Dodge/Ford dealer and they supposedly performed the recall and everything checked out ok with the factory hitch. I took the vehicle home, and several months later was under the Jeep performing some maintenance. When I looked up, I noticed that the tow hitch was severly rusted in some spots, and there were chunks of rust inside the hollow tow hitch. I have been unable to get them to do anything about it, contacting them, and the manufacturer several times.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving at 5 mph, the fuel tank was leaking. The contact stated that the fuel tank leaked only when the fuel tank was filled halfway or full. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,000.
After a safety recall on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee for possible fuel leak and ignition source, the vehicle was inspected by the dealer. The remedy was to install a new oem trailer hitch. An aftermarket trailer hitch was installed by me roughly 15 years ago. The inspection said the existing hitch passed and was ok, therefore the dealer did nothing. My contention is that the existing hitch in service for 15 years is not adequate. Corrosion has taken its toll and half of the structural integrity is gone, therefore it does not offer adequate protection to the tank making this vehicle unsafe. It is evident after waiting years to get this remedied by Chrysler that they are waiting for these older model Jeeps to disappear to the recycle yard and therefore will not rectify the problem.
I went in to have the recall of my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee done this morning (safety recall n45/NHTSA 13v-252 rear structural reinforcement), and the Jeep dealer refused to install the trailer hitch per the recall specifications. They said that it looked fine and put a sticker on it after making me wait for 2 hours. This, even though the aftermarket hitch that is installed on mine is so corroded that the ball and attachment point cannot be removed. When I reminded the dealer of the facts, and that having the hitch sticking out that far from the back exacerbates the hazard that exists, he actually said "that's your problem". So it appears that all of these delays have actually been Chrysler acting in accordance with its internal plan to certify all installed trailer hitches and not install new ones. And in cases like mine where the risk is exacerbated by rusty sharp hitch components that might act as a spear to puncture the tank, dealers could care less. When I obtained a copy of the actual recall document I found that Chrysler has carefully crafted a disincentive for dealers to do anything other than say that any hitch installed meets the standard. They get paid . 4 hours for inspecting, but only 1 hour for removing a rusty hitch and installing a completely new one, which would likely take two hours. The manager of the dealership told me that they are losing money on every hitch they install and they have no intention of making hitch wiring work on any of those installed. The dealership even advised me to take my hitch off myself and come back. What a monumental waste of time - mine and yours, since they they are clearly thumbing their nose at the letter and spirit of the NHTSA agreement. I appreciate what you are doing here, but to say it's not working is a profound understatement. . .
The fuel level sensor inside the fuel tank is faulty and frequently shorts out causing the fuel level to read zero until a bump in the road causes the sensor to start operating again. This intermittent electrical condition may cause a total electrical failure with the sensor. This type failure may cause an electrical fire with the sensor and ignite the fuel in the tank. The sensor needs to be recalled and the sensor replaced.
I'm inquiring about an announced recall (n45) of the vehicle earlier this year. After about five months I've yet to receive a recall letter. The dealer doesn't seem to care. Chrysler tells me NHTSA is the holdup. Nhtsa tells me it is in legal. I'm tired of the run around. Supposedly there is a safety issue with the placement of the fuel tank behind the rear axle. I've read Chrysler proposes to install a tow hitch on affected vehicles. That doesn't seem to hard a fix and surely doesn't require a half year or more resolution. If there is a safety issue why is it taking so long to resolve? if it's not a safety issue then I don't understand why a recall was issued. I am requesting that the issue receive some attention so it can be resolved. It has taken way too long already.
Received the safety recall regarding the fuel tank on the Jeep and possibility of fuel leak if rear end collision. I was supposed to have received a second notice regarding inspection and installation of a trailor hitch. I have not heard anything in almost 6 months. Please help!.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that there was fuel leaking from the fuel tank. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
These vehicles have a recall for rear gas tank I called crysler they are giving me the runaround about the recall .
This vehicle is supposed to be recalled due to fuel tank exposed if rear collision crysler is doing nothing to repair they just keep telling me they don,t have part but if I go to dealer to buy they have it called several times just get the run around.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph in rainy weather, the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a guard rail. The contact stated that the anti lock braking system and the air bags failed. The contact also stated that once she crashed, the fuel tank cracked and gasoline spilled all over the highway. The contact was not injured. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they stated that they could not determine the cause of the brake and air bag failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was unknown. The contact called the manufacturer which sent a representative to examine the wrecked vehicle. Lh.
The fuel level gauge doesn't work correctly. I do not like to be stranded on the highway with my twin 2 year olds when the tank becomes suddenly empty. The 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a recall for the same problem and I would like to know if the same part was installed in my vehicle and why it isn't included in the same recall?.
Gas guage indicates more fuel than in tank. When tank shows a 1/4 tank it actually is on empty. Dealer is finding problem to correct. Consumer will add more information. Fuel level sending unit failed causing vehicle to run out of gas and consumer to be stranded on the side of the road.
While stopping on a hill and trying to get into in a highway vehicle was without power. Gas gauge showed that tank still had fuel, but, in reality, did not had any fuel.
While driving on interstate noticed loss of power, vehicle appeared as it was going to stall. Pulled over to the side of the road, gave it gas, and vehicle just died. Put in gas, drove it to the service station, and added more gasoline. It was reading a full tank, but in reality, it was empty. Contacted the dealer.
Gas gauge indicated that there was quarter of a tank of gas. However, there was no gas at all in the tank which caused vehicle to stall and had a crash. Vehicle was totaled. Please provide further information.
Before I realized that the guage wasn't working, I ran out of gasoline twice. The second time while I was on the highway during the rush hour commute. This was extremely scary and dangerous as I was stuck at a dead stop in the fast lane with no where to go. I was hit during the second incident. I did not wear out the gas tank. Although the manager at the dealership told me that she had heard lots of complaints about this same problem from other customers, Chrysler will not pay for the repair in full.
I was operating my Jeep Grand Cherokee on the highway at about 50 mph when the vehicle stalled out. The gas guage meter showed that there was 1/4 tank of gas in vehicle. The gas tank was in fact empty.
Fuel indicator and pump failed causing it to read 1/4 of a tank when empty. Nlm.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a fuel odor present inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel line, the fuel tank and an unknown part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Fuel tank read gas as 1/3 of tank when it was emptt. Also the gear shift indicator reads park when the auto is in reverse.
