It has happened a few times the lever in the gas tank that lets the gas gauge know how much gas is in it sticks when it says a quarter tank it is actually completely empty. 16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2000

On three separate occasions the fuel gauge read that there was 1/4 tank gas left, yet the vehicle sputtered to a stop because it was completely out of gas. The last time this happened, I was on a major interstate, 5 miles from the next gas station. The warning signal on the dash was never activated and I was given no reason to believe that I was running dangerously low on fuel. As well, the trip computer read that I had at least 80 miles to go before I would be out of fuel. I contacted my local Jeep dealership(galloway motors) to inquire if there were any recalls regarding fuel gauge failures, but was told that there were none and I would be expected to pay for any repairs.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2000

Approx. 6 months ago, gasoline leaked from tank to garage floor. Fumes entered home. We were awake and quickly moved vehicle and ventilated home, before fumes reached burning fireplace. Dealer replaced a plug and promised it would never happen again. 7/2/2000 gasoline leaked in garage while family was sleeping. Fumes contaminated entire home. Wife taken to hospital for exposure. Dealer now states the plastic tank misformed but will not advise why. Service manager, steve, states he has seen this happen before, but refused to install a metal tank. We have advised that we do not want the truck back and fear for our family's safety. Vehicle is currently at dealer. In 1998, this vehicle shut down in the middle of a highway due to the same problem other consumers mentioned on your complaint page. The dealer is also performing the brake recall work. I feel this plastic gas tank is extremely dangerous, since it misformed and leaked on it's own. If the dealer makes us bring the truck back home and finish the lease, we are afraid to operate the vehicle or put it in our garage. Please help.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/19/1999

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ran out of gas although the gauge clearly showed nearly a half tank of fuel. The car stalled going approx. 40mph but I was able to wrestle it safely off the road. After many hours the police came and ordered a flat bed tow truck. I towed the vehicle to the nearest Chrysler dealership which was fullerton Ford/Jeep in bridgewater n. J. On rt 22. What troubled me so much was not that a part was bad but that the service mgr. Knew what the problem was without taking the car off the flat-bed or looking at it! he told me to have the tow-truck driver to tow it to the gas station and it would start , for me to make an appointment and they would replace the fuel sending unit. Which they did. ( the car did start when I put gas in it ) Chrysler claims that their is no recall on my year and that the "technician" is just very good at what he does. No one can tell what causes a moving car to stall and not re-start from 100 ft away unless there is a problem specific to that vehicle. I understand the '97 did have a recall. Did they ever stop using the same part or did they use up what they had left? and then change. Chrysler won't even pay my towing charge for which I am suing. Please check into this. They are arrogant and rude at Chrysler and this is a potentially deadly problem. They know this is wrong and are doing nothing. Thank you for your anticipated help.
