16 problems related to tank assembly have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Rusted fuel tank shield.
Rear axle gas tank.
Leaking fuel tank. Gas is leaking from the the vent seal ( weld ) at the top of the tank. This part cannot be replaced. The tank must be replaced. The Jeep dealer said there are 700 tanks back ordered ! so there is a problem though Jeep denies it. Also the year 2000 Grand Cherokee has been recalled for the same problem with the same fuel tank. Thank you.
The consumer the check engine light continued to illuminate, upon inspection it was discovered there was an evaporation leak, the leak was in a roll over valve which was apart of the gas tank. The consumer was told by the dealer, that over 500 gas tanks were on back order.
**safety issue ** after filling the gas tank, fuel spewed out of the bottom of the vehicle, forming a puddle approximately 2 ft in diameter. Eventually it slowed to a drip. I took it to shakopee Dodge to fix the leak. $374. 19 later, it's fixed. I called Chrysler to argue that I shouldn't have to pay for this, as it's a safety concern. They chose not to support me, and said they could do nothing.
After the vehicle was refueled, gas started to spill out of the tank.
Our Jeep 1999 was hit in rear end and burn , hurting the driver badly. The gas tank exploded on impact. This is very unsafe.
The gas tank was not filled to "full," and there was a fuel leak which might cause a fire if there was a source of ignition. Currently vehicle is at the dealer.
Gas tank was replaced mid July of 1999. After that date, the "check engine" light appeared. Service department claimed that the oxygen sensor was bad and replacing the part would fix the problem. The following day, the "check engine" light appeared again. Dealership was notified, but the service department was too busy to service us in the next few days. We went down to orlando FL, where we purchased the vehicle, and they saw the car immediately. The service department's diagnosis was the same as the dealership in jacksonville, FL. Oxygen sensor was reported as bad and replaced a second time in less than a week's period. The following day, on the way back to jacksonville from orlando, the "check engine" light appeared again and the dealership was notified in jacksonville. We are scheduled to have the car service again to correct the problem. Furthermore, the car is now running rough; indicating that the light is not just a malfunction, put a potentionally serious problem.
Rear pinion seal leaking at first oil change -took to dealer - they changed out the whole rear end -noise again in rear -took to dealer they said now it was in the front - took to different dealer - tried to fix - took back vehicle till they could get whole new front and `rear end parts in - this has been over a month ago- while waiting in line vehicle died and restarted - few days later vehicle died three times at high speed restarted but ck engine light stayed on -towed to dealer- they said they replaced crank sensor - noticed new O2 sensor as well - still waiting on other parts - passenger side window does not work - vehicle surges at constant speeds -stick shift hard to shift from park to reverse and drive and visa versa - interior lights dont come on when remote turned on to open vehicle- engine feels and sounds rough- alarm system lights go on and off by themselves- once the dealer gets the parts in I will be taking it back for the 6th time with our new complaints.
Gas spills / overflows on person at fueling, pump shuts off, with tank near empty.
Rear-back window leaked, reseal failed, had to remove window and reseal, took 4 days. Front differential failed causing front tires to hop during tight turns, diff replaced took 3 days. When stopped at a stop light truck lurches forward almost as if hit from behind, this happens 1 sometimes 2 times at one stoplight, engine revs also increase when this happens, dealer cannot fix. Gas tank is very hard to fill the pump stops before it is full and many times gas spills all over truck and pavement causing a fire hazzard, also gas cap is very hard to remove.
Joe@mi-net. Com : problems=steering, fueling, tran. Slips 2nd-3rd,won't start, brake pulsation, shift to reverse loud clunk noise.
In examing the Jeep Grand Cherokee, I notice the locatin of the fuel tank appeared to make it subject to rupture when the vehicle was subjected to a rear end collision, when the colliding vehicle submarined slightly. We are in the process of purchasing a Jeep and would like your opinion.
Gas tank is not easily filled, gas not allowed into vehicle on several occasions and spills out onto consumer.
The rollover valve gas tank and fuel pump leaked. Also, consumer complained of brake problems, such as caliper replacement every 6 months. In addition, ignition malfunctioned. Consumer attempted to start the vehicle at least 3 times before it actually started.
