39 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2006

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It started to overheat, leak and smoke, coolant fan broke and tore right through the cover. I now need repairs totaling approximately $2600 due to the coolant fan malfunctioning. I thought I could get it repaired at the dealer for no cost since there was a coolant fan recall on this particular vehicle because I have the same year, make and model. I was told that even though there was a recall on the same SUV that I have, my VIN number was not included in the recall, therefore there is nothing that can be done for me. Due to the coolant fan breaking, I need a new cylinder head, radiator, cooling fan motor and coolant fan realignment. I have to pay for all of this myself just because they did not include my VIN number in the recall.

40 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2006

My wife & I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee that we purchased new. We had overheating problems with the vehicle and took it to our Chrysler dealership June 23, 2006 to have it repaired. The dealership determined that among other things, the cooling fan was not working properly and needed to be replaced. I had researched the problem and learned from your website that on June 6th,, 2006 Chrysler group announced that it was recalling our Jeeps cooling fan for potential separation of the fan blades (attachment). I told our repair advisor of the announced recall and despite having an unrelated problem with the fan I didn't want to pay to replace a part that Chrysler was going to replace per the recall. He told me that because Chrysler had not completed the administration of the recall I would have to cover the cost of repairs but would be reimbursed when the recall made it through the system. On August 30, Chrysler completed the administration of the recall; I followed the instructions for reimbursement and was reached by a Chrysler customer service representative by telephone. The representative stated that I was not going to be reimbursed for repairs because the recall notification occurred August 30 and I had replaced the recalled fan June 22nd for an unrelated problem. I stated that the recall was announced June 6th; I replaced the fan after that date; my statement fell on deaf ears. I believe Chrysler is failing to live up to the recall; Chrysler should reimburse me for the replacement of the cooling fan plus labor because I had replaced it at my expense more than two weeks after the recall was officially announced. I should not be castigated because Chrysler took greater than two months to administer the recall. Please contact me with what you feel is the proper remedy.

Failure Date: 06/09/2006

I was driving and felt a bump. I stopped and got out and looked under the vehicle, behind the vehicle and in front of the vehicle and a fellow motorist looked and saw a piece of black plastic in the street under and pointed to it. Got back in the vehicle and drove to my destination and parked, came back and cranked it up and was pulling out, noticed what looked like smoke was coming from the vehicle and the temp gauge needle went into the danger zone. After noticing this I started heading to the dealership, but stopped to keep from during any further damage and called a wrecker. Upon arrival at the dealership I informed them what happened. After they examined the vehicle, they informed me that the fan had broken and knocked a hole in radiator and broke the fan shroud.

The contact heard of a recall for the same issue in a news report, but was informed by the service dealer and manufacturer that there was no such recall in effect. At a later date the manufacturer was notified of a NHTSA recall #06v199000; regarding engine and engine cooler, cooling system fan by the contact. 46 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2006

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder 4. 0. Yesterday my cooling fan blew up for no apparent reason, damaging radiator and area around cooling fan. This is an extremely dangerous problem since if the hood was up at the time the fan blew up, someone could have gotten maimed or killed. This is the same issue as reported on your January listing of problems.

The consumer stated that there was a NHTSA engineering analysis ea05020 concerning the engine and engine cooling fan. The consumer's vehicle manifested the same problems as indicated in this analysis. The fan of the motor exploded, resulting in extensive damage to the radiator. The vehicle was towed to a dealership, where it is currently being repaired for this problem. (11/23/05) the steering was noisy and would grind on high idle, the vehicle would shake when braking due to the front disc pads wearing low and the front rotors and the pinion seal leaked.

48 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2005

Driving at approximate speed of 35 mph, I heard a loud boom (like something had hit the car), I stopped and checked and saw nothing. All gauges displayed normal ranges and I checked all fluids and visually looked around the engine area from the top. Everything appeared normal, but six days later without further noise or warning signs the engine temp peaked max, while sitting in a parking lot. Tested the engine as directed per the manual and no good. A tow was initiated to a repair shop the end result was the fan had broken into pieces and gone into the radiator and through to another section. Total cost of repair was over $1500 and I am still have problems with leaking transmission fluid that is being addressed all related to the fan coming apart and flying into other engine parts.

49 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2005

This is in relation to action # ea05-020 on the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. On the date listed below, the blades separated from the motor and the "shrapnel" punctured my radiator and my battery. The car was in motion so, the hood was closed and no one was injured. However, I had to spend about $800 in parts to repair the vehicle.

50 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2005

I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. About a week ago while driving I heard a loud pop come from the engine. When I stopped to examine the problem, I saw a large leak coming from the bottom of my car. After looking under the hood, I saw that the plastic cooling fan in my engine had shattered and the pieces punctured my radiator. The shroud covering my cooling fan had also been shattered. I immediately took the Jeep to my local Chrysler dealer (whom I bought the car from). After looking at it they told me there was major damage caused by this incident. In addition to needing a new cooling fan, shroud and radiator, I also needed a new head gasket because the car had overheated. I believe there was a defect with the plastic fan which led to the damage to my car. I have contacted Chrysler about this situation and they said there is nothing they will do. I would appreciate your prompt attention looking into this matter. Thank you.

51 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2005

While I was driving vehicle on Wednesday, August 31, slight vibration was noticed. While my wife was driving vehicle on Friday, September 2, a loud pop was heard, sound similar to that of metal expanding when heated. The air conditioner quit working at this time. When I drove the car on Sunday,September 4th, the vehicle overheated and upon raising the hood, saw that the fan was gone and pieces of the covering of the radiator were broken and missing.

52 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2005

While stopped in a parking space, check gauge light came on. Vehicle temperature gauge was at 260 degree. I shut off engine and opened hood. The electric fan had shattered and put a hole through the fan shroud and the radiator. Parts of the shattered fan were lodged in the serpentine belt pulleys. Vehicle was towed to repair shop where mechanic said that the exact same thing happened one week before to an identical 2002 Grand Cherokee laredo. (same year and motor). My vehicle is now in a Jeep dealership. I am awaiting determination as to whether or not repairs are covered under an extended warranty I purchased. Upon returning home, I went on line to investigate and found out that the NHTSA was conducting an investigation based on other owners complaints that their electric cooling fans had shattered and punctured the fan shroud and radiator. Vehicle was purchased new and is a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 6 cylinder engine.

53 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2005

The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo. A piece of the fan broke off and went into the radiator, causing damage to the radiator. The fan and radiator had to be replaced. The mechanic told her a piece of the fan blades broke off, destroying the radiator. He said the fan must have stalled to have possibly caused this problem. This incident occurred on August 22, 2005. The contact was pulling out of a parking space at a low speed when this happened.

54 Cooling Fan problem

2002 Grand Cherokee Jeep started making an unusual noise when first starting the car and when idling. Mechanic said that the cooling fan needs to be replaced. 58 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2005

The cooling fan blade just broke while stopped at a light. It made the car thump I thought someone hit us but the fan blades broke the fan shrode and put dents all in the radiator and broke the fan guard. This vechile has had many of the same problems due to the electrical system. We lease the Jeep and have put $$$ in it because they would not take it back as a lemon with in the 2 years. I still hear a beep coming from under the dash that Jeep never found the problem or fixed it. I just had the fan relay changed because it went out. With in the first 2 years I had it in the shop for a variety of electrical problems I have all the paper work. I am afraid the Jeep will catch on fire or cause an accident. I've also checked many other things that were issues with the Jeep. Leaking shocks and transmission pan and emissions is now leaking. The check engine light stays on and every time I get it checked it's a different problem. I'm out of my warranty now but there have been so many different things wrong. The dealer replaced 2 of 4 leaking shocks they left the transmission pan loose when they replaced a part in the transmission. This Jeep is unsafe for the road it has lost power in the past while traveling so they replaced the battery twice with in a month.

59 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

When I put my car in drive, there was a loud bang - sounded like the car was shot, so I pulled over. Coolant was leaking out and there were pieces of black plastic all over the ground. When I lifted the hood, I found that only half my fan was attached. The other half apparently broke off and blew threw my radiator. I had to replace the fan, motor, radiator, the fan shroud and coolant. The garage said they had never seen anything like it. This was an expensive repair with no warning signs. The car is pampered and maintained well.

60 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2005

: the contact stated while driving 35 mph, there was a loud clunking noise heard from the front end of the vehicle. This was followed by the temperature warning light illuminating, and the engine overheating. The vehicle was towed to a service dealer, who determined that the cooling fan had separated. The radiator fan, the shroud and the radiator were all replaced. There was a NHTSA recall # 06v199000, which pertains to the engine cooling fan. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.

61 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2004

I received safety recall f25-electric radiator fan, back in November of 2006. I called the dealership to schedule repair and was told that there was a national backorder on the part. I was informed that I would be contacted, once the part was received. I have made several calls to the dealership, to try and schedule the repair and have not gotten an appointment as of yet.

62 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2004

The radiator electric cooling fan suffered a catastrophic failure. The fan blew apart with a loud bang as car was placed into drive to leave a parking lot. The owner thought he had hit something and checked the exterior of car. The disintegration of the fan blade blew a hole through the radiator fan shroud which was probably the loud bang. This caused coolant to overheat and air conditioner to stop functioning when car was stationary. This was not noticed on highway where most driving is done and car was driven on a 700 mile trip before failure was detected. If hood had been open at time of this failure an injury could have occurred to individual in vicinity of shroud. The owner replaced both fan and shroud as dealer was too busy the day failure was discovered. No other engine damage has been noticed. The Jeep 5 star dealer showed no interest in this failure. A member of a golfing fore some told me that the same thing happened on his 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee a month later at approximately the same mileage. His cooling fan disintegration punctured a hole in his radiator. My parts were thrown out with trash but digital photographs of damage are available.

63 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2004

My Jeep experienced the failure in the NHTSA campaign id 06v199000 prior to the recall. At the time, I contacted Chrysler to see if this was warranted part. They advised me it was not and that I should have the car repaired on my own. In 6/06, I saw the announcement of the recall. I have contacted Chrysler numerous times regarding the recall and been told that my VIN # is not included in the recall and that they cannot help me. What recourse do I have to be reimbursed for my out of pocket expenses for a product failure that was recalled?.

64 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2004

I was driving on sr 70 when I felt my Jeep slugging then I looked at the gauge and noticed that it was all the way to the boiling point. Then I pulled over to the side of the road because I wasn't sure what had happened. Called my dad he came and looked at my Jeep and found that the fan had busted we had been able to put enough water in it to get it to wal-mart where we came to the conclusion that it had a hole in the radiator. There was pieces everywhere from the shroud. The next day had it towed to firkins in bradenton it was out of warranty so I ended up paying $1131. 45 for this to be fixed. Now ever since this has been fixed my check engine light comes on for awhile then goes off. This happened with the fan on 8/17/04 now both power windows in the back are not working just the other day my son got out of the Jeep shut the door and down came the window neither of the back windows work had it checked out and it will cost me 300. 00 per window for the bearings what is going to happen next the front ones. I thought when I bought this brand I was getting a good value but turns out all I have had is a nightmare.

While driving at an undetermined speed vehicle stalled. This caused consumer to drift to the side of the road. Mechanic determined that the radiator plastic fan failed.

66 Cooling Fan problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2002

11-18-05 driving my car on freeway, heard a "pop" sound, then loss of fluids. Drove off nearest exit to nearby service center. Plastic cooling fan broke apart sending pieces into the front of the radiator, cutting and splicing it. The entire casing/shroud of the fan was cracked on the bottom and top, as well as several blades of the fan broken out. Chrysler refuses to cover the damage stating it is past the warranty time of 3 years or 36,000 miles!!! I now have tp spend $1200 to fix as well as rental car for 1 week while they were "evaluating" the situation. Heeeellllp!!.
