I went to open my driver's door this morning and it wouldn't open, had to open it from the inside. After open the door would not shut and latch. The plastic on the inside of the door handle is cracked and bad. Common problem, Chrysler group should recall this is a safety issue among many Grand Cherokees.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the rear interior door handles fractured and detached. In addition, the front passenger side interior door handle was fractured and would not open the door. The only handle that was functional was the front driver side door handle; however, it was also fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the door panels would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
I haven't been in a wreck yet; but this is more of preventative measure. I have looked at multiple sites and seen where there have been thousands of complaints on interior door handles breaking off. I notified Chrysler and they told me that was the 1st they have heard of it, and was willing to do anything about it. All four of my handles have broken off and I have rigged up the driver door, but as far as passengers they wouldn't be able to get out if their was an emergency. I would think Jeep would step up and issue a recall on this poorly made product.
Where you open up the door by the door handle it has started breaking on my front driver side and both of the doors in the back seat.
Jeep door handles are faulty. The plastic surrounding the door handle is a faulty product. The plastic starts cracking and falling apart. Then the actual handle has no support and begins to have problems. I can no longer lock the vehicle properly. Three doors are affected thus far.
I just bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5. 7l hemi and after purchasing the vehicle, I noticed that the rear passenger side interior door handle had snapped off so that you are unable to open the door from the inside. The front passenger side door handle is cracked, but not completely broken off yet. There is some spider cracking on the rear drivers side handle as well. After doing a little research, I realized that it's not a part that can just be replaced, it must be replaced by Jeep and can cost upwards of $3,000. I see this as a very urgent safety issue because if I get in a car wreak or there is a fire, my passengers and I would have trouble exiting the vehicle. This is a problem that needs to be addressed by Jeep and soon before this takes a tragic turn.
All four of my door handles are cracked. I can no longer open my rear doors from the inside because the handle is completely busted. My two front handles are almost the same. If I have passengers riding in the back seat I have to open their door from the outside. I fear that if I'm ever in an accident no one will be able to exit the vehicle unless an outside person in present. This is a very serious and dangerous situation, and I feel that Jeep has a responsibility to its consumers to fix such a safety issue.
Interior door handles on front passenger and rear driver side have both failed. The handle pivots on brittle plastic and it cracks unless you're extremely gentle. Definitely a manufacturer defect.
Interior door handles broke off making it dangerous to get out of vehicle in an emergency.
The plastic interior door panels are breaking at the door handles. When the cracks proceed far enough the interior door handles break off trapping occupants inside. All four doors are broken, the driver's door least of all. It is not a wear and tear issue but a real safety concern.
My door handles on 4 of my doors (not one or two but four) on the inside have cracked, some cracked where one is unable to open the door from the inside which now makes this a safety issue. This is problem because the plastic in the doors are so brittle that any force can cause the handle to break. I have approached Jeep about the issue and they do not even listen to my complaint and said I just had to buy a new replacement door panel. A door panel to replace a faulty door handle is quite unacceptable and not a logical excuse for their bad and very cheap product. You pay good money to stay with an american vehicle but with excuses like this make me want to buy foreign. Something needs to be done as I have researched the issue to find many people in my same situation. . .
We have purchased a used 2005 Jeep with 2 broken door handles. Searching the internet shows that this is a common problem with these Jeeps. This is truly a safety hazard seeing as no one could escape this vehicle should there be an accident. Since this is a problem many seem to have, I feel Jeep needs to step up and repair this very serious issue!.
I purchased a used 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. A few days after I bought it I was cleaning the inside and opened the back passenger door. Upon doing so I noticed the handle is broken. It is still operable but I don't know how long it will last. I looked online and see that apparently everyone that has this model has the same problem, some people with all 4 handles useless and unable to open any door from the inside. I have a 3 yr old son that sits in the seat where the handle is breaking. If there was an accident or emergency I want the door to be able to open. If the handle breaks, because of a manufacturer defect, and he cuts his hand on the jagged plastic I think that could cause a lawsuit. If I have an adult in the back seat and there is an emergency the person may not be able to exit. This is not safe or acceptable.
I opened the door to get out and the interior driver's side handle broke off of the door panel. I went to the dealer and the handle is part of the door panel. The handle's hinge is set in plastic which happens to be in the same one piece door panel. The door panel has to be replaced ($795 for the part and $259 for the installation). On line I noticed that there were many complaints with this problem. It is possible to get locked in the car.
Cracks in interior door plastic leaving door handles difficult to manage. Same problem as so many others have reported. Called Jeep directly and no solution offered. Dealership is not willing to fix the broken part under warranty.
Interior door handles are inoperable. Cannot open door from the inside of the vehicle. Handles crack and break easily. This causes operator and passengers unable to exit vehicle in a timely fashion. Doors must be opened from the outside.
Three of my door handles have broken off and are not functional from the inside of the vehicle. The only handle that is in tact is the drivers.
My door handles on my truck would not let me get out . I had to put the window down to get out of my truck . I hear alot of people with the model Jeep I have also encountered this problem .
The plastic wells behind all four interior door handles have broken, leaving a gaping hole ringed by sharp spikes of plastic shards. This occurred prior to my purchasing the vehicle on the date indicated as the date of the incident. This is a widely reported issue. The next stage of the failure is that the interior door handles will eventually break out of the door and come off into the door operator's hand, requiring the door to be opened from the outside. Once this occurs, the failure will become a significant safety risk as passengers will be unable to open the door from the inside, effectively trapping them inside in the event of a severe accident or fire. Jeep has fielded thousands of complaints about this particular failure and numerous videos made by unhappy consumers have been posted to youtube and other similar sites. Jeep currently charges $500-$700 to replace the entire door panels while a niche market has been created by individuals selling injection molded replacement parts that Jeep does not sell. This is an unacceptable solution and Jeep needs to issue a recall. It becomes a minor safety issue the moment our fingers come into close proximity of the sharp plastic shards surrounding the opening, and it becomes a major safety issue the moment we and our passengers are no longer able to open a door from inside the vehicle. Please make this happen.
My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited's interior door handles have broken from their door panels.
Front driver-passenger side door panels. I recently discovered that my front driver and passenger door panels have cracked around the interior door handle. The cracks have progressed to the point where the door handles dislodged from the panel from repeated use. The cost of each panel is $770. 00, excluding labor. The dealer where purchased stated "there is nothing we can do about it. " what's disconcerting is that the back of panel shows reinforcement (thicker plastic) for the window buttons but the material is paper-thin for the door handle. Once the door handle falls off, the only way to open the door is to roll down the window and push the exterior button. I have filed a complaint with Chrysler.
Interior door handles are made with material that do not support the normal wear and tear. Clearly a safety hazard to be riding a vehicule, whether as the driver or passenger, and if an emergency calls for you to abandon it, as you pull the handle to open your door the handle brakes in your hand and cannot open the door. In the event of an emergency, we are talking, not about minutes, but seconds to react and move away from danger. Failure to open, could represent the difference between minutes and seconds that could prevent major injury if not death in case of an accident.
Interior door handles are defective. The plastic surrounding the interior door handles has become brittle and broken allowing pieces to fall inside the door. This breakage has rendered the door handles inoperative and prevents the door from being opened from the inside. In the event of an accident the occupants of the vehicle would be trapped inside, especially if the power windows also became inoperative.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the plastic interior door handles were fractured. The contact stated that all the interior door handles except the front passenger side door handle were fractured. The contact stated that the sun roof would leak whenever it rained. The vehicle was taken to be inspected and was diagnosed that the roof needed to be replaced. The contact also stated that there was mold and mildew from the water leakage. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 80,000.
From the many forums I have researched, this is not the first complaint about faulty door handles in the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. All four of mine have cracked and large chunks of the inside of the "cup" have fallen off into the door panel. One of the doors in just about inoperable because of the location of the crack and I know its only a matter of time before the rest of them follow. As a mother of 2 children, it scares me to think that they could be stuck inside of a vehicle that could have been in an accident. To me, there is no excuse for the company to not issue a recall on the parts, as they will sooner or later be looking down the line of a huge class action law suit for someone losing a passenger or their own life due to being unable to open their door. Imagine a car rolling over and catching fire. As quickly as that could go up in flames in only a matter of seconds, what counts are the moments that person is fighting with getting a door open, or in a vehicle without having to fight and saving a life or 5, as this is a 5 passenger car. I would strongly suggest that this be seriously considered and pressure be applied to the manufacturers of Jeep to issue a recall for all vehicles with that type of door handle.
The left rear door handle has broken off. I open the door to place an item in the back seat and noticed the door handle laying inside the door. The handle itself is in tack but the plastic surrounding where the handle attaches with the door was broken. There was not trauma, heavy or extensive use placed on the door (inside or out). When researching possible solutions to my problem, I became overwhelmed by how many other owners were dealing with the same problem. I called a couple of dealers and was floored by the cost to fix the situation and attempting to used a door from the junk yard is not a solution due to the problem appearing to be universal to this vehicle. My concern is that I now have a vehicle where one door can only be opened from the outside creating a safety issue. On an upside, I am thankful after reading other peoples situations that I only have one door affected, but now I am on edge and cautious that my other doors will soon follow suit.
Interior door handles break all 4 door handles had cracks in the plastic backing when I got the vehicle in 2012. First, the rear driver door handle broke and the mechanic wanted $850 to fix it since the plastic backsplash is part of the whole door panel. Without the plastic backsplash, the handle does not work. So, I have to open that door from the outside for my kids. Now the front passenger door handle has a hole and is almost to the point of breaking. I want to get rid of this car as I cannot afford $3300 to fix the handles. This is a safety hazard as doors must open from the inside.
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. . . Appx 2-3 yrs ago, driver side door handle separated from door panel. Finally got dealer to fix under warranty. Appx 3-6 mos ago, same thing happened to other 3 doors -- called Chrysler customer care and told because of mileage (appx 80k) and age of vehicle. . . No extended warranty was forthcoming. . . Dealer estimates $600-$900 per door. Safety issue. . . Doors can not be opened except from the outside. In event of accident, rear occupants would be unable to open doors and escape vehicle in timely manner.
The handles on both rear doors have cracked making them unusable. You cannot open the door from the inside, safety issue. They are made of cheap plastic that breaks off. The only person that rides in my back seat is my 84 year old mother who has very little strength in her hands. In order to replace it you have to buy the entire door panel for 500 dollars plus labor. Please consider issuing a safety recall.
The interior door panels are constructed with weak plastic causing the door handles which are molded into the plastic door panels to fail. Failure of the door handles to open the doors from the interior is a safety hazard in the event of an incident (fire, accident, etc. ) that requires immediate evacuation from the vehicle.
The rear right door handle broke. My truck has under 80,000 miles.
All interior door panels broken. I have contacted Jeep/Chrysler and they say they wont fix it.
Latches/locks/linkages - the pop down did not show this category so I used other the door latches will not work due to failing inner plastic housing. All four doors are in some condition of cracking and failure. One latch will not work at all, thus the door cannot be opened from the inside of vehicle. It is a serious safety issue. There are many complaints on this issue that have been filed. Chrysler should immediately recall the vehicles and properly repair them.
