While driving on the freeway, passenger side headrest randomly exploded open with great force and a loud bang, hitting the passenger on the back of the head. There was no reason for the headrest to do this, and my passenger was injured.
The active headrest on the drivers side of the Jeep fired off without an accident.
We were in a church parking lot, Sunday morning at about 10am. Outside temp was 65 degrees. Vehicle was stationary. My wife got in the passenger seat and the headrest popped out and struck her in the back of her head. She later developed a headache and general dizziness. We stayed in the rest of the day so she could lay down. Not sure if a telescoping headrest was a feature, I did a web search to see what the issue was. I read about the exploding headrest, a term that describes what it was like. Looking at the inside of the headrest, I can see the broken plastic tabs that were described by others. I assumed this would be a recall item, but was disappointed to learn it was not. After calling the dealer, we were given an estimate of $850 to replace it. This is obviously a bad design and should be replaced as a recall fix. We don't have the money now so will have to live with it extended.
Active headrest restraint deployed on it's own w/o accident.
Airbag in driver's headset activated when stopping at a red light in traffic. The headrest hit the back of my head hard causing neck pain headrest is now engaged making it difficult to drive.
I was sitting in the driver's seat the vehicle was off and parked and the active headrest deployed out of nowhere. I was struck in the back of the head and suffered a concussion, neck and shoulder injury and whiplash.
Passenger headrest deployed on its own with the car parked and engine off. I can see a plastic clip that is broken that normally holds a metal pin in place to keep the headrest in place.
Driver's side headrest trim visibly detached from backside. Noticed while parked in driveway. First, noticed tether hanging out from the top. Then, with a flashlight, I looked into the inside and see what looks like plastic brackets broken from the metal anchor point on top. I asked my wife (her vehicle) if she was in any accident and she said no. Doing research online, I found that this active head rest (ahr) trim is supposed to compress a spring and clip onto metal anchor. But this plastic is sheared off. Others have had this problem and there is a class action lawsuit commencing for this issue. My wife now cannot safely drive her vehicle due to headrest spontaneous failure. How is she supposed to use her vehicle?.
In this case, the vehicle was stationary or starting to move in reverse to hook a trailer. As I lightly put my hand on the passenger front headrest, it sprung forward. There was not a collision at the time of the event and no one currently sitting in the seat, although, a person was sitting there just a few minutes before this happened. Upon further inspection, I see the plastic of the inside of the headrest that hold a rod to keep it attached had broken apart. This should only happen during an accident.
The vehicle was stationary, the door was opened, then my right passenger headrest popped forward and out before the passenger sat down with little to no motion other than the door opening.
The passenger seat head restraint deployed and was not involved in an accident and was stationary when it deployed.
Vehicle was stationary when I noticed the active head restraint was deployed. When I inspected it I noticed a clip that holds a metal pin that keeps the head rest in place was broken. There is no way to reset it because of that. I believe the clip broke because its to thin and under all that pressure trying to keep the head rest in place, it gives out and breaks.
Sitting at a stoplight the driver side head restraint exploded. Car was not moving. Was on a city street.
I was on I-95n at approximately 65mph in north carolina on 11/26/2021 when my wife and I heard a loud mechanical crash sound. My wife was sitting in the passenger seat and had been hit in the head by the headrest that had ejected randomly. There was absolutely no reason why the headrest should have deployed.
Vehicle was in motion. I was driving on a city street when my passenger headrest popped out of place. Unknown. I had no collision or was no bumpy road conditions. The plastic part holding the headrest together looks to be broken. Im afraid my driver side headrest might pop open when driving on the highway and hit me and cause a collision.
My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland randomly had the driver headrest pop out of place and hit me in the back of the head while I was parked in my driveway.
My vehicles driver headrest popped open, exposing the inside of the headrest, randomly without coming into contact with anything that would've caused the incident.
Passenger headrest deployed on its own.
The vehicle was stationary in the driveway and I was getting out of the car when I heard a loud pop and I looked over and saw that the headrest had deployed out of nowhere.
I was getting ready to leave, the vehicle was parked when I heard an extremely loud pop noise! I thought it was an accident or something had smacked into my car until I realized the loud noise came from the headrest popping completely open! I am very grateful that I wasn't driving at the time as this surely could have caused accident and or injury or both.
The headrest popped out during normal highway driving, the result almost caused a head on collision at 45 mph.
Passenger seat head rest unexpectedly exploded outward while driving on the highway hitting my wife in the back of the head. Could not reset the headrest as it seems the plastic piece that holds the headrest into place failed and released it.
I was in the car parked and out of nothing the headrest popped and hit my head. I tried to see what the problem was , but there was no way of putting it back in.
My vehicle was parked in garage overnight. When I got into my vehicle I noticed the driver side headrest was hanging down. I took a look and noticed two plastic pieces were broken. I did a quick search to see if anyone else had the same issue and found that every Grand Cherokee forum people were having the same issue. The vehicle was stationary and has not been in a collision, additionally I haven't adjusted my headrest in years. It seems that the pieces are failing on the active headrest.
The headrest on the seat, while sitting in car in my driveway it broke loose at the pin and hit the back of my head. The pin remained locked in and burst out at area that holds it in.
While my car was sitting idle at a stop light within the city limits of wilmington, nc the passenger side headrest exploded. There was no contact made to my vehicle, the headrest just exploded and sprung forward. Nobody was injured. Until I arrived home and googled what happened I didn't realize the headrest acted as an airbag or that this is a known issue with the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
