5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2025

Transmission will "buck" unexpectedly when slowing to a stop. This causes a violent and unpredictable lunge forward. This has been reported and inspected by the dealer multiple times with the assessment just being "that's an 8 speed transmission for ya". There is no warning of it happening, nor is an event stored within the vehicle ecu.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2025

While driving then it just shuts off.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2023

Engine oil filter housing cracked and there was excessive and continuous oil leakage. Research on the internet shows this is a common problem as the part is made of plastic and destroyed by heat. If not fixed, the car could overheat, the engine fail, and the car stop during use at high speeds. Problem was inspected, confirmed, and part replaced with metal part at rad rides in buffalo wy. Problem first appeared as oil leaking under car about 2 weeks ago.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2023

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle could not be taken out of four wheel drive low. The vehicle had been hesitant to accelerate. Four wheel drive warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a faulty transfer case and transfer case control module. The manufacturer made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2023

Jeep turns off while driving and makes me put it into park to turn it back on and into drive again. Lights flicker from dim to bright inside and outside. I have changed both batteries and the alternator.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2023

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, the transmission failed to shift into park(p). The “service transmission, set park brake, and prevent rolling” messages were displayed. Several unknown warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel immediately afterwards and then turned off independently. The parking brake symbol remained flashing with an audible alarm beeping. The contact turned off the vehicle, and the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the valve body had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure occurred approximately 1 year later. The vehicle was returned to the dealer who had diagnosed the vehicle with valve body failure. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 20v043000 (power train); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer had been attempting to have the manufacturer add the VIN to the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2023

While exiting an automatic car wash, I pressed the brake pedal to put the vehicle in gear and while turning in the lot to go to a vacuum station the accelerator stuck and went to wide open full speed mode and I could not stop it with the brakes. I shot through a vacuum stall, jumped a curb and hit a concrete drain collection box. The air bags deployed but the car was a total loss.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2023

Powertrain control module.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

I've had issues with my vehicle since 2021 -engine light first appeared on the dashboard and towed my car to a Jeep dealership. Vehicle was "repaired" (have the documentation, if needed), but the engine light remained on. I have since driven this vehicle for nearly 3 years with the engine light on, bringing it into different Jeep dealerships (all documentation on record if needed) to repair and was told there was nothing they could find wrong with the engine. Last year (2023) my electronic stability control and 4wd lights came on in addition to the engine light. My car was sliding all over the road and my 4wd was not engaging at all. Brought vehicle to Jeep dealership for repair, was told abs module needs to be replaced and the traction control is malfunctioning; no 4 wheel drive engagement; that the abs module has been discontinued and the only way to replace this is to get an after market part. Contacted mopar and was told there is "no way of knowing if it's available and it's beyond their capability". I was told the after market part would be tied to a specific VIN. I then contacted the Jeep dealership- parts department and explained the situation, asking if there's any other way I can fix this part in my vehicle. Was told there's nothing I can do since it's discontinued, that it's odd that a part for a 2016 vehicle would be discontinued, and I could check junkyards for parts but am not likely to find a match since my vehicle is not that old. I live in colorado and in the last 2 winter months have been terrified to drive when it rains or snows because I have no traction and am sliding through traffic lights and stop signs, even going at a very slow speed. I ended up in the next lane over when slowly driving up a hill on a main road. The value of this 2016 vehicle is miniscule compared to value when I purchased; this places safety of myself and others at risk. My partner is experiencing a similar issue with his 2014 cherokee - discontinued part and safety issues.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2023

Over a 3 year time span my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee has on multiple occasions had an extremely rough idle, has a hard time accelerating and car drives extremely rough and bumpy. I’ve taken it to multiple different auto shops and all they ever do is change spark plugs or they just don’t know what’s wrong. No engine light illuminated and no codes. Spark plugs changed March 2020, August 2020, January 2021 and now January 2023 I’m having this problem again and the shop says they don’t think it’s spark plugs . I just want this resolved. This cannot be safe!.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2022

The shifter inside my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed. It started by losing the indicator that told you what gear it was in. Although there is an additional indicator on the dashboard, I would begin to have incidents where it would show in park on the dashboard but would be in reverse. While waiting on parts to come in at the dealership, the shifter lost all power and would not shift out of park. Vehicle was towed to dealership for service.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2022

My 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 75th edition 3. 0l ecodiesel stalled with no warning while driving on a two lane highway in the middle of nowhere, new mexico. No warning lights, until the entire dashboard turned on and the car starting losing speed and power. I don't know how I was lucky enough to make it to the shoulder. I sat there for 2 hours with my 2 kids in the car waiting for a tow, 8 hours from home. I have come to find out that there is one recall for my egr but when taken to the dealership I was told that my car was built with magnetic material attached to the tone wheel which provides a signal to the crankshaft position sensor and was lost therefore leaving me stalled and stranded. I have looked up my recalls and that one is not on there! how is that possible.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2021

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while slowing to a stop from 5th gear to 1st gear, the vehicle bucked forward. Additionally, the vehicle would jolt forward while driving. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who reset an unknown module in the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2020

While driving the vehicle and towing my boat (approx 4500lbs) for the previous hour or so on state highway between 50-65 mph with some stoplights (not interstate), the check engine light (cel) came on and the driver interface on the instrument cluster came on displaying something to the effect of "service electronic throttle control system". Continued driving approximately 2 miles to get to an intersection to turn off the main road. Once stopped at the stoplight I noticed slight smoke coming from the left front corner of the hood by the headlight. I placed the vehicle in park, put the hazards on and pulled the hood release. By the time I exited the vehicle and made my way around the door to the hood, thick black smoke was billowing from all around the hood and flames were noticed coming through body gaps and the grill. Within 30 seconds the entire engine bay and hood was engulfed in flames. I did manage to get the boat unhooked and pushed back and documented with photos. This is the third time these indications (cel) and driver interface displayed the exact same indications. The first time it resolved upon shutting down the vehicle. The second time, it was brought to the dealer. Approx 1 month prior to the fire the dealer found nothing on inspection and reset the code. The code was for excessive egr flow. Additionally the dealer performed any outstanding recalls on the vehicle. This vehicle was equipped with the 3. 0 eco diesel engine and was bought new, dealer, serviced its entire time and had approximately 70k miles on it. I have no doubt this was directly rated to an egr problem that these particular engines have had issues with directly resulting in the fire.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2020

Service shifter light came. There are a lot of issues with the shifter.

20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2020

This is now 4th or 5th time. Driving car, came to a stop then it stalled on me. This time something different happened. After trying to shut down, restart it automatically went into 4 low! I was able to get into a parking lot of the side of the road unlike last time. This time I have footage of the entire event. I find it hard to believe that other Jeeps same year as mine are being recalled for same reason, but mine isn't making the VIN cut. This is now my 3rd report to this site. The others were done before new recall came out. Something needs to be done before this kills someone.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2020

While the vehicle is in motion and slowing down it lunges forward with no input from the driver. This sometimes occurs by taking your foot off the gas. This happens everywhere, on city streets, highways etc. This has happened almost every time the car is driven.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2020

Driving down the highway and lost all power. Will not restart. Towed to dealer they say it's fuel pump related. It is a fuel pump relay which is a very known issue (recall) on 2011-2013 but not on anything newer.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2020

My car will randomly stall out when I slow down or come to a stop while driving. There have been at least 4 times where I've been stopped at a red light and it auto-stops and then doesn't start back up again when the traffic starts moving again. A message comes up on my dashboard telling me to shift to p and then back to my desired gear. I'll try to restart my car 2-3 times before anything happens. I've been on hills and on highways when this has happened and almost gotten into an accident on at least 4 occasions because of it. I've only had this car for a year so 4 close calls is a bit much for such a short amount of time.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2020

Backing up to parking spot a home, from a dead stop I goosed the throttle to go up a slight incline and throttle stuck wide open in reverse. Stood on the brake for 20ft while fighting the throttle, hit the side of garage and threw it into drive and continued to stand on the brakes for another 40ft in drive. After smashing the ignition button frantically about a dozen times and also engaging the emergency brake, the Jeep shut off. This all happened in our driveway that our children play on often. Luckily no one was hurt, and no one was in the vehicle with me but this could have been way worse. Never had an accident in my life until this event. Completely out of my control. Note the skid marks on the driveway.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2020

On may 3rd 2020 driving on highway the accelerator sensor went off. Heard a loud pop. Vehicle lost power and speed declined from 55 to 30. I floored it and the car would not reach speed of 55 mph. I had no cell service and was 45 miles from even a town. Limped the car to dealer and left there. This is the 3rd time this has happened and the dealer tells me they can't get it to repeat. Vehicle is currently at the dealership. I have called and left a message and have heard nothing.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2019

Loss of power. . . . Electronic throttle sensor. Again second time lost power in my vehicle on highway 299 in shasta county headed home to trinity county CA . Again I had no cell service. This time I had my 9 year old daughter with me our dog and a vehicle full of groceries. Now I am scared of this vehicle. Scared to drive it. I have called manufacturer they have done nothing but close all my claims and cases. Denied my arbitriation. Wont appeal even though I have powertrain warranty of 100k miles. This vehicle is not safe! they wouldn't even give me a comparable vehicle. Dealership again told me they don't know what is causing this and they can't fix it.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2019

Sometimes when in drive the car starts forcing itself to move forward motion, only happens when turning on a 4way street! also the car automatically turns off at red lights if low on gas it shut off and we were stuck at a red light.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2019

I was driving along and apparently my battery in my keyfob went dead. My engine stopped while I was driving and if I won't have had just bought a new battery I would have been stranded. There is no way to start the engine with key.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2019

In 2019 Jeep rolled out an approved emissions modification (aem) program as part of a emissions compliance settlement with regulatory authorities. This software flash/re-program has made an otherwise safe car unsafe. At low engine temperatures (cold start) the vehicle has very little power to accelerate through intersections, make left turns, move out of the way if someone is approaching from a high rate of speed from behind at a stoplight. Jeep has acknowledge this issue and have noted they are working on a fix, but have not offered accommodations to ensure one has a safe car to drive when they spend months developing a fix. It is a hazard, has resulted in several near-miss situations, and they need to be held accountable to ensuring their customers safety.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2019

Loss of power driving down the highway. Went from going 60 mph to 20 mph. Dealerahip service could not find anything wrong with it. They cleared code and stated vehicle seemed to be running fine. I was driving on a rural highway 299 in trinity county California where there was no cell service and was left stranded. I drove on the shoulder the rest of the 30 miles to get to dealership.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2019

Within months of purchase of new 2016 Jeep, there was a powertrain recall. We were at 7788 mileage when the powertrain was reprogrammed. The jerking of the Jeep while braking continued to be a problem. They reprogrammed the powertrain again at mile 48,254. We went in again in mile 53,259 for transmission concerns. , again at mile 57,227 there were harsh upshifts while driving on the highway and at 58,273 they replaced the transmission. Within a week, we had the same jerking happening while braking and upshifts while driving. So just 3 weeks after new transmission, it burnt up on the middle of the highway. We had to be towed and it sits in the dealer shop for over a month now. It is getting it's third transmission. (been to the service shop 6 times in 3 years) no warranty for the manufacturer. . . . Fca washes their hands. Lemon law is voided with the number of miles and yet the problem began in the first 10,000 miles. No communication by dealership. Manager promised us a trade and ignored our emails. They fired the service tech, or he quit. We need a different car to drive and no one seems to help us with this.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2019

Car was stopped, placed in park and left running in driveway. Driver exited vehicle, manually locked with with the external button on drivers handle. Driver walked around vehicle and up to residence. Car began to move forward and driver ran back to vehicle, attempted to unlock using manual button on passenger front handle, would not unlock. Pulled out keyfob to unlock and was able to disable vehicle, but not before it ran itself in to a closed garage door. Driver noticed it slip out of park on two other occasions while in vehicle. One day later, driver was standing outside vehicle, while not running, and not near door handle and car randomly locked on it's own.

33 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2019

This roll away incident occurred on March 7, 2019. My 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee was parked in a driveway that was not my own and I exited the vehicle while the Jeep was in park but idling. I exited the Jeep without an incident (noticing any forward movement of the vehicle) and walked to the porch to deliver a letter to the homeowner. I was on the porch when the Jeep moved forward into this homeowner's garage, crashing into the trash cans in front of the garage first and pushing them into the garage door. This caused substantial damage to the garage door and it's track. I watched this incident from the top step of the porch and quickly jumped into the Jeep, put it into reverse and looked at the damage from the bottom of the driveway. Two days later a claim was filed with fca. Three days from the incident, a eaa representative contacted me to obtain information. Four days later I was asked to pick up my Jeep from the dealer after their inspection. On April 5th, almost a month later, I received a letter from fca stating that they could not find fault with the vehicle and it was human error! I recreated this while now in the driver's seat. I opened the door and was warned via the tone that the door was open as it moved about 1-2 mph up the driveway in d without touching the gas. There was no way on 3-7-19 it was in drive as I could not have gotten out without noticing it move this quickly. It rolled up it that fast with my foot off the brake. Fca stated they could not replicate this action but they did not even try! after leasing or purchasing in the immediate family: 4 Jeeps (it never happened to any other prior model), and 6 other vehicles, I will never own or lease another fca vehicle again. The inability for this billion $ company like fca to replace a garage door and say it was owner error will keep me from recommending this company to any friend or family member.

34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle was stopped and placed in park. Once the contact exited the vehicle, it began rolling backwards.
