7 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2014

When turning right on the corner from phebe ln in slc, ut. Into 1700 e. Going at 10 mph I heard a loud noise. I was able to stir the car next to the sidewalk. I exit the vehicle to see what happened and I saw that the wheel was separated from the car. I called the towing truck to have the car towed to the repair shop. The diagnosis was the lower front ball joint and the axle got separated from the vehicle. I was really lucky because I was driving with my 9 year old girl and we had just arrived from park city, ut. Into slc. And if the ball join separation occurred when I was going down and 65 mph the scenario could be much more different.

8 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2013

We were traveling southbound on i75 at a speed of only approximately 15mph due to a car accident ahead of us. All of sudden my car dropped and I heard a scrap of metal against asphalt. I slowly pulled car over to center median and got my children to the center of the guardrails to keep them safe. Upon expecting vehicle, I noticed that the wheel on the passenger front side of the vehicle was turned away from the car, the molding was detached and the metal that holds the wheel in place was sitting on the roadway. We had to wait for over 3 hours for a tow truck due to needing a tow truck that had a lift, not a flatbed. By the time the tow truck arrived, the dealership was closed and we had to be towed to a repair shop that could have the repairs completed for us by Saturday afternoon. It turned out to be the ball joint nut fell off of the bolt that holds it in place. The entire ball joint needed to be replaced as well as lubricated. The repair person checked the other side and suggested we take to have inspected, as it did not have a cotter pin to hold the nut onto the ball joint assembly. The total cost for the replacement was $240. Because of our speed, no one was hurt. Due to the facts known about the Jeep Liberty, I was thankful we were not traveling at the posted speed limit of 70mph or we would have had a vehicle turn over and possible injuries or death. I have photos as well as receipts showing this issue.

15 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

My 2002 Jeep Liberty 2x4 always bounces when I drive it. It bounces and the steering wheel turns by itself when I hit a bump at slow speed. Regularly, I hear a popping sound when I turn the wheel to make a turn. I have had the vehicle serviced regularly and had the recall item completed (front ball joint) but still have the problems. I have placed all new tires on the vehicle but the problems still exist. I am afraid to drive the car on the freeway at high speed because I can feel that the car does not operate correctly. I cannot afford to buy another car at this time but feel that this car is not completely safe to drive. Please note: this is a recurring problem rather than an incidental problem. . Which started about a year and a half ago and has gotten progressively worse. Thank you for your concern and for letting me bring this to your attention.

17 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2007

I was turning into a parking lot when my front right tire collapsed and I hit the curb. This was due to the ball joints being defected. After about a week and a half my car was fixed by the dealership for no charge. It concerns me that I was never notified that there was a second recall on the ball joints or in fact for that matter on the air bags or the exterior lighting. This accident happened last March, I felt it was necessary to make a complaint after seeing on the tv the investigation that is on going with this problem.

Consumer requesting reimbursement for the towing cost associated with the failure of the ball joints.

19 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

I was never notified about my 2002 Jeep Liberty recall on the front ball joints. Luckily I just pulled into a parking lot and was only going about 5 miles per hour and the ball joint on the drivers side fell out. I heard a big clunk and then couldn't move the car, the inside rim was all gouged. Had it towed to the dealer and was told about the recall on it. I purchased my Jeep in Dec 03 and this recall was Nov 03, the dealer should have replaced them prior to selling it.

20 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2006

We had a recall for the ball joints of our 2002 Jeep Liberty. It took nearly 2 years to get them replaced. They were damaged by the time I did and I had to get a temporary repair on them while we waited for the parts. They were repaired at the end of February early March of this year. At the end of may I noticed a similar noise to what I had been hearing when the original ball joints had made before they were replace. As it turned out they had gone bad already. It seems that the new ball joints are defective too. I have had some out of pocket expenses for this issue and I am not happy at how I have been dealt with by the dealer and daimler Chrysler. I sent a complaint to daimler and their response was that they were sorry I was not satisfied with my vehicle and would file it in a consumer survey file. I am not unhappy with the vehicle. I am unhappy with how hard it has been to get this recall issue fixed and having to pay for service on the ball joints. I purchased the vehicle from glenn e thomas Dodge. The customer service rep with daimler was a woman named alison. My vehicle has been out of use this time for over a month before the final repairs were made.

21 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2005

Jeep always pulls to the right. Problem was supposed to be resolved with ball joint replacement procedure from a recall, but it still exists. Dealer performed a wheel alignment (which he suspected was needed), but problem still exists. Replaced original tires with only 20,000km (probably due to compensating for pulling to the right) - consider this a safety issue because you always have to compensate for the pull.

22 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2004

3rd time work on a ball joints recall job that cause damage to brakes, tie rods ,rack n pinion, rotors and most of the suspension system.

23 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2003

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty. The ball joint separated and caused me to crash into a cement wall on I-77 in west virginia. I picked up the car after it was repaired in wv and brought it home. I had to have more work done after I got back because it still was not right. The ball joints have been replaced at least 4 times. I was told by one of the mechanics that they were still using the joints that were causing the problem because they had not figured out how to re-design them. The last time I had it repaired they (hopefully) put ones on that are a new design. I have had to have it towed because it was unsafe to drive because the joint was so bad -- I check it regularly! my insurance company is progressive. Chrysler settled with them and paid for all the repairs after the crash.
