2006 Jeep Liberty. Consumer writes in regards to no replacement parts to complete fuel tank recall notice.
2006 Jeep Liberty. Consumer writes in regards to gas tank recall issues. The consumer stated he has been getting the run-a-around from Chrysler with trying to get the recall performed. The consumer had an after market tow hitch installed on the vehicle. However, he was informed it was unfit/unsafe.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that another vehicle crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle while stopped at a traffic light. There were no injuries. After the vehicle was repaired, the check engine indicator illuminated constantly. An independent mechanic stated that the fuel tank was leaking. Prior to the crash, the contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) however, the parts needed for the repair were unavailable. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was unknown. . Updated 08-20-14.
My complaint is actually about NHTSA! in June of 2013, NHTSA petitioned Chrysler to recall (recall number n46) Jeep Liberty vehicles including model years 2002 - 2007. According to Chrysler customer service, my 2006 Jeep Liberty is included. Apparently, there is a risk of fuel tank puncture, and subsequent fire in the case of rear-end collision. Chrysler, after initially refusing to issue the recall, caved in to NHTSA pressure. When I spoke with Chrysler today, five months after they agreed to the recall, they indicated that they are waiting on NHTSA reviews and approval of Chrysler's recall proposal to install a trailer hitch in under-equipped vehicles, in order to strengthen the rear end of the vehicle and prevent gas tank punctures in the event of a low-speed rear-end collision. It seems counter intuitive that NHTSA would pressure a manufacturer to issue a recall, and then hold up the process of repairing affected vehicles when the manufacturer finally agrees. If this alleged vehicle defect actually presents a safety hazard, why allow five months to pass without action?.
Have not been able to fill up my gas tank completely since this past fall. I purchased this vehicle August 2013 from an authorized Chrysler/Jeep dealership. Please note that this is not user error at the gas pump. I have owned at least a few different cars and understand how to use a gas pump. I've filled the Jeep Liberty at least a dozen different gas stations and it does it every time and the gas sensor at the pump will not shut off. I have had no choice but to have westbury Jeep service center on January 15,2013 to look at the vehicle since the gas overflow is a potential hazard.
This has been happening for some time. When I fill up, the gas tanks gushes out gas when it is full. This happens almost every time that I fill up with gas. It seems extremely dangerous as there is enough fuel that spills on to the ground below the Jeep. I have replaced every regulator in my Jeep's windows. They go out all of the time. The last one went out while driving and the window crashed down and scared me to death.
Fuel gushes out of tank when filling, splashing gas all over operator, vehicle, and ground. A lot of gas splashes, enough to be very dangerous. Even not ignited gas on the ground can be slippery and cause a fall. This is extremely unsafe, a fire and explosion hazard, unhealthy, an environmental hazard and a waste of valuable resources. There is no way to avoid the occurrence as it is not related to the speed of filling or whether or not you have the nozzle handle locked (most stations here have removed the locks anyway).
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable time frame to provide the parts for NHTSA campaign numbers: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) and 18v278000 (suspension). The dealer (superior Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram fiat, 120 us-158 byp, henderson, nc 27537, (252) 654-0161) was unable to specify when the parts would be supplied from the manufacturer after the contact had called several times. The manufacturer indicated that the parts were unavailable and on a national backorder. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Fuel tank inlet check valve not stopping gas from surging out of the tank and all over the ground/person/car. This occurs even after the gas pump as 'clicked off' and is not filling the tank. Chrysler as extended the warranty on model year 2007 & 2008 Jeep libery's, but this is a 2006 with the same problem.
This was the first time that we had filled the tank up on our 2006 Jeep Liberty since we purchased it on may 29,2012. While standing at the pump waiting for the tank to fill up, the tank started overflowing with gas. I had gas all over me, the car, and the ground. I wrote it off as being a problem with the pump. Two weeks later I go to a different pump to fill it up, and it happens again. So I called the dealership that we bought the vehicle from and explained the problem and we took it in for them to look at. They replaced a canister and leak protection guard, which did not fix the problem. I started looking on Jeep forums and have found quite a few instances of this same problem on the Jeep Liberty and these people have also filed claims to the nhsta. The only way for the problem to be fixed is for the tank to be replaced because there is a check valve in the tank that is causing this. This is a very costly repair as I have called a couple of dealerships around in the are with the tank alone costing over $1,400 dollars.
When filling the gas tank, I let the pump shut off by itself. When the pump shuts off, a few ounces of gasoline spill on the ground. This happens consistently.
When filling the gas tank, the gas pump clicks like the tank is full then it starts overflowing.
When filling up the tank at the gas station the tank has overflowed quite a bit of gasoline onto the ground as the pump stops. This has happened on several different occasions at several different filling stations.
My Liberty started having fuel spill problems about a month ago. Now, every time I fill the tank, the pump doesn't 'click off' fast enough and there is an overflow (~1/4 gallon) of gasoline. This has happened at every gas station I've tried lately.
Gas spits out of fuel tank when full does not auto stop. (faulty sensor)I try not to fill tank all the way.
Upon filling gas tank with fuel, the shutoff engages too late, and gasoline pours out down the side of the vehicle onto the ground. This does not matter which gas station is utilized, but happens whenever reaching a full tank, even when care is taken not to engage the spout at its maximum capacity. This is an ongoing issue, since I purchased the car last September, and so the following "approximate incident date" should be - ongoing.
Every time I try to fill the gas tank, it overflows. It doesn't matter what station or pump. If I use the automatic lever on the pump, the gas comes squirting out all over my car, my shoes, and the ground. Even if I don't use the lever, and squeeze the pump handle myself, the pump still does not shut off before overflowing. It is a problem with the car, not the gas pump or the operator.
2006 Jeep Liberty gas shut off valve does not engage and gas overflows upon filling up gas tank. Has happened everytime I fill up the gas tank over the past 4 months.
While filling tank with fuel, fuel spills out onto exterior of car. Fuel does not stop, until overfull. This has happened on multiple occasions, and at various filling stations.
Every time I fill up with gas (regardless of station / how I hold nozzle / speed at which I refuel / etc), the tank overflows with a lot of gas all over the vehicle and the ground and sometimes on me. Then the interior of the vehicle stinks of fumes for a long time afterward. This has been going on for almost as I've had the vehicle but it getting worse over the past year.
Everytime I fill up my gas tank on my 06 Liberty it over flows.
Gas tank overflows when fueling because it doesn't sense when its full. I have to stop fueling before I think its full so this doesn't happen, so I am unable to fill tank completely. Spills all over my clothes, on the ground and down the side of my vehicle. Also I smell an electrical burning smell when I'm driving my vehicle sometimes which is very scary.
When filling fuel tank, gas overflows out the filler tube. It does this know matter how you fill the tank_man. Or auto.
Every time I fill up my vehicle at a gas station gas comes pouring out after the tank is full. The gas nozzle clicks off and gas begins to pour out all over the side of the vehicle and the ground. I have tried manually pumping as well as automatically pumping with the same results. I have attempted filling at multiple gas stations with the same outcome. This did not occur the first year that I owned my car, and only began in the past couple months. This is a hazard to the environment and a potential danger for a fire.
Since I bought my 2006 in November of 2010 I cannot fill the gas tank w/o it overflowing. . . . . The sensor that senses it's full is defective. . . . . . . Me and about a zillion other Liberty owners. This is a dangerous defect!. . . . . I have owned 5 Jeeps and this would cause me to reconsider another one.
Gas overflows when filling tank.
2006 Jeep Liberty overflows when filling with gas. Gas sprays out with significant force. Had the same problem with a 2006 durnago and the entire fuel tank and fill neck needed replaced. 2005 models were recalled, nothing on 2006 yet.
2006 Jeep Liberty made in may 06. This model is similar to the 07. Gas tank filling to full, gasoline shoots out the gas inlet with much back pressure. It has been doing this consistently for the last couple of months since I bought the car. It makes no difference what station I go to, or how fast the gasoline is flowing.
2006 Jeep Liberty sport, overflows when filling up gas tank, most of the time.
2006 Jeep Liberty sport overflows from the gas tank when filling gas. This happens at various gas stations. The automatic shut-off at service station pumps do not sense pressure to shut off. This causes fuel to spill on side of car, ground and possibly the person filling the tank. This is an environmental hazard, fire hazard and could cause harm as an inhalant.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4. While contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed back out from the filler neck. The contact stated that the failure recurred constantly whenever the fuel tank was filled close to capacity. The contact inspected the vehicle and advised that the fuel tank would need to be replaced because the fuel check valve was defective. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and a complaint was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000.
Every time I fill my gas tank up a bunch of gas spills out all over the Jeep, the ground and me. This has been happening for around 6 months now. This happens at every gas station I've used.
Hi, I have owned this Jeep Liberty since 2008 and bought it with 2700 miles on it. The problem I have and many others have is with the filler neck on the fuel tank. It overflows gas every time you fill. Even if I slow it at the approx time the meter says it should be getting full. The internet research shows that the new gas tank assembly from Jeep has a new/fixed safety valve in the filler neck that is supposed to help with a rollover accident but apparently slaps shut when filling causing the gas puke on clothes, shoes, ground, etc. It is not good for the environment, pocket book, or other people at the gas station as spilled gas is a significant safety concern. It is a chronic failure and Jeep should do something. Sell part at loss/severe discount, replace for free would be nice, acknowledge the problem is a big issue and stand up and fix it even though it is not the classic, "this causes accidents and we better do something so we don't get sued" type of safety recall. Thanks in advance for the help.
On each fill up, gasoline shoots out of the nozzle receptor. This occurs with the operator holding the handle in or with the latch pushed down to hold the handle down. Approximately a quarter cup of fuel shoots out of the tank upon overfill. I have called several dealers and the dealer insists the tank has been compromised by "ethanol based" fuels. I have never filled up with anything but 87 octane. The dealer wants me to pay $5000 for a new gas tank. This occurs at every gas station and I have tried to fill the tank on the slowest setting. Neither method helps the overfilling. This is not only a safety concern for me, but an environmental hazard.
2006 Jeep Liberty sport fuel overflows out of fuel filler tube when filling gas tank no matter how slowly the tank is filled. The automatic shut-off at service station pumps does not sense the back pressure of the fill tube for these vehicles. This happens every time when refueling vehicle at any service station. Each occurrence causes spillage of fuel (approximately 6-12 ounces) on exterior painted surface of vehicle, on person filling vehicle and onto pavement creating not only cumulative damage to vehicle exterior but fire and environmental hazards as well. Internet research concerning this issue with Jeep vehicles shows this to be a widespread problem across the united states and corrective actions are very rarely addressed by the manufacturer and then only if vehicle is within warranty. Obviously there is a defect in either the vehicle fuel fill tube, fuel tank or both. It appears Chrysler corporation has been aware of this defect for quite some time, but has yet to recall these vehicles for the problem.
