The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. While driving 21 mph, the contact heard an abnormal clunking noise and the steering failed without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer (hill-kelly Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, ram located at 6171 pensacola blvd pensacola, FL 32505) where it was diagnosed that the lower ball joint and lower suspension needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer assistance. The failure mileage was 156,623.

We never had any problems with the steering on our 2006 Jeep Liberty until we had a severe cold snap (Jeep was bought in FL and now resides in DE) and then all of a sudden it developed a screeching, straining noise in the steering and all around driving. It didn't matter what speed we drove the noise was always there and consistent, whether you turned a corner, put on the brakes, backed up or drove on the road normally almost sounded like the brakes were dragging but we had the brakes changed in April 2013. Took Jeep to our auto repair shop and they diagnosed the vehicle with bad upper and lower ball joints. Don't understand why this would happen all of a sudden but in ended up a very costly repair. Enjoy our Jeep but if there was any recalls for ball joints we were never notified.

In November of 2006, I had a recall fixed for the "front:control arm:lower ball joint" when the parts became available. I brought the car back 3 days later having issues with the steering and hearing a noise. The dealership took the car for a few days and did a complete inspection and assured me the new parts were sufficient. Every now and then (not constant, but scarcely) when I would turn the wheel just a little, the car would turn as if I had turned my wheel all the way. It scared me a few times, but it didn't happen often at all, so I didn't think much of it. On may 31, 2007, I was merging onto I-91 in connecticut driving only 22 miles per hour, and my car did that very thing. I went up and over the curb, up the embankment and crashed into a steel connecticut state sign. If it wasn't for the sign, I would have continued to lose control and possibly been killed. Hitting the sign swung my back end around, where I rolled down the embankment and to a complete stop on the side of the highway. My car sustained over $7,000 worth of damage and has damaged my perfect driving record. No other car was involved and no one was hurt, including myself. I was very fortunate, but I feel there needs to be further investigation into the previous recall and possibly a new recall should be posted to eliminate this problem. The problem still exists despite the recall from last year.

The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. While driving approximately 55 mph, the contacts grandson heard a loud breaking noise and the steering immediately locked, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The rear passenger side tire detached from the vehicle; however, he was able to avoid a crash and successfully stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local garage. A police report was filed. A professional technician inspected the vehicle and noticed that the front and rear axles were corroded for a very long time, which caused them to fail. The insurance company stated that the vehicle was completely destroyed. The dealer did not provide any assistance. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was included in NHTSA campaign id number 06v288000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint), but the contact never received a recall notice. The manufacturer sent an investigator to inspect the vehicle and it was discovered that there was no correlation between the failure and the recall. The manufacturer is refusing to assume any liability for any of the damaged components caused by the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired and the contact has pictures of the failed component. The failure and current mileages were 61,000. Updated 05/06/08
