1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2026

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would shut off without warning. The vehicle had been taken to an independent mechanic; however, the mechanic could not diagnose the failure due to the lack of a warning; they have also tried to duplicate the failure but was unsuccessful. The dealer was also notified of the failure and the contact was given an estimate diagnostic estimate which the contact declined. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2025

Crankshaft went out I replaced it and 5 months later I'm replacing the crankshaft sensor again the 2016 have a recall why dose not the 2015 same issue and it's a problem.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2024

I bought my 2015 Jeep Patriot new as I was getting older & I said this is the last vehicle I will buy. I am nearing 80 years old now & today I took it about 35 miles from home & on way back it jerked so hard I didn't think I was gonna make it home. I was going 65 mph but even slowing down to 45-50 it still jerked bad! there was no lights on the dash come on. Was very scary. I have babied my car took excellent care of it & have 45,000 miles on it. I do not have money to have transmission replaced & that's what I'm reading on computer. I have so many medical bills I can't afford nothing right now. Did I miss a recall or have there been problems with these cars transmissions? can you help me know what it could be? the car dealer wants $139 an hour to check it out & I'm worried sick.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2024

My car has caught on fire with smoke at least 4 times, 3 times with my minor child inside of it. I have video to show you just how dangerous it is. All components of the vehicle have failed. I have put thousands of dollars into the vehicle and it only has 80,000 miles on it. My safety and my son and elderly mother's safety has been at extreme risk and my car is not safe to own or drive. Carl gregory, the dealer, never informed me ever of a 2015 Jeep Patriot recall only three months after I purchased the vehicle while pregnant. The vehicle has been inspected/ worked on by carl gregory and now southern motors Jeep several times over the last 8 years located on middleground road at the corner of abercorn street in savannah, georgia. My insurance company has charged me to tow my vehicle at least six times as my son and I have been stranded all over the city waiting hours for a tow truck. There were no warning lamps on the vehicle prior to it catching fire and I have my car tuned regularly at wal-mart automotive and cleaned at montgomery cross roads car wash once a month. Today the engine stalled and I barely made it out of of the street which is highly dangerous for pedestrians and other drivers on the road. This is probably the 3rd time it has done that. The steering wheel stalls leaving me at the whim of an open road as my car goes out of control. The radio's electrical unit shut down two years ago and the back door does not open. I can't afford to fix those. The brakes were replaced approximately two years after owning it as the vehicle would not slow down during a red light (at the cost of $2,000). I had to veer right. Last November, the car was worked on and the clutch was replaced because it stopped working. One month ago we paid $600 for a new power steering hose to be replaced as it apparently was and continues to leak fluid. This has now been indicated on the dashboard as "hot oil". Currently, I love my car but my family and I are petrified and traumatized.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2024

The transfer case is shot. As well as the rear differential. As a result of the transfer case messing up, the transmission is tore up. We need struts as well.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2024

Urgent safety complaint: sudden loss of power in 2015 Jeep Patriot on interstate I am writing to formally report a critical safety issue I experienced with my 2015 Jeep Patriot on multiple occasions. While driving on the interstate at approximately 70mph, my vehicle unexpectedly lost power, causing an immediate drop in speed. This incident occurred under normal driving conditions with no prior warning signs or dashboard alerts. The sudden loss of power in a high-speed lane posed a severe risk not only to my safety but also to other motorists, as it could have led to a multi-vehicle collision. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder without incident, but the potential for a more severe outcome was distressingly high. I am extremely concerned about the reliability and safety of the 2015 Jeep Patriot. I urge a thorough investigation into this matter to identify and rectify any underlying mechanical or electrical issues that could lead to such a dangerous situation. It is crucial to address this problem promptly to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of all drivers. Researching this issue online has shown that this is a common issue among many Jeep Patriots. I am willing to provide further details or assistance as needed for your investigation. Thank you for your prompt attention to this serious safety concern. Sincerely, kelvin oxendine.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2023

I nearly died this time. The crankshaft sensor was replaced like advised and the engine stalled turning left in an intersection. Official complaint #2. Thankfully no one was behind me. See previous complaint for more details.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2023

For the last 3-4 months my Jeep has been going into limp mode while in motion, sometimes at high speeds. There seems to be no pattern anymore and I’ve replaced the parts mechanics have suggested.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

Key takeaways from the information you’ve provided: 1. Your engine’s rpm drops to zero randomly while driving and idling. 2. The engine loses power, accompanied by the traction control light flashing. 3. Power steering is lost within 10 seconds after the power loss. 4. Transmission range sensor (nss) was replaced, but there might be an adjustment issue. 5. Shifting from reverse to neutral is difficult, while shifting from drive to neutral is fine. 6. Taillights don’t change during difficulty shifting down from reverse. 7. A code reader showed an abs code: c1221 after the nss replacement. 8. The negative terminal clamp may need replacement. 9. Engine issues might be related to temperature or transmission shifts.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2023

On 5 occasions at various speeds and types of roads, my vehicle suddenly goes into limp mode, the engine shuts off and power steering goes out. I have very limited time and control to move off the road before the car behind me slams into me. The majority of the instances this has happened, the orange anti-skid light comes on though road conditions were fine. I found a recall of 2016 Jeep Patriots (s89/NHTSA 16-v-907 crankshaft/camshaft sensor wire harness) and many complaints I've found experiencing the same thing I experienced were included in this recall. Mechanic ran my Jeep's code and it showed a number of things were triggered but he couldn't pinpoint what exactly could be the cause based on the code errors. I have a young child in a car seat in the back of my car and feel extremely unsafe taking her anywhere, let alone when it's just me in the car. Please consider adding the 2015 Patriot to this recall.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2022

Two issues- first one the vehicle engine tends to randomly sputter like there is a dead cylinder. Which I have found by adding electric jell to the spark plug connector will make the problem go away for a short time. Second one now in the rear transfer case is marking a grinding noise and is getting louder.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2021

***vehcile was purchased January 2021. Later found out the 2015 Jeep Patriot I purchased had 5 previous owners. . . Making me the 6th owner. *** sept 2021 I was driving during rush hour on busy las vegas city street when out of nowhere and no warning my 2015 Jeep Patriot lost power. . . 3 dashboard lights came on (lightning bolt/check engine light/traction control). I was able to coast into a hotel parking lot after crossing 3 lanes of traffic. Once parked, I shut the vehicle off, waited about 10-15 seconds tried restarting it again and to no avail the problem persisted. Had the car towed to mechanic shop where they determined/diagnosised the problem to be the throttle body and it needed to be replaced. Car was no longer under warranty so I had to come out of pocket almost $1000. All this during the covid 19 pandemic. When I picked up the vehicle from the mechanic they informed me the traction control light is still on because my rack/pinion was damaged so my alignment is out of whack. They allowed me to drive off with my vehicle even when the alignment being screwed up. When driving my vehicle home, I was so scared because it felt like my vehicle wanted to go in every direction at the same time. The next day I took my vehicle to big o tires to have them test the alignment. After they re-aligned the Jeep it ran perfect. But I spoke to soon. . . Just after 1 week, im now starting to experience more issues. . . Car accelerating on its own, hesitation when trying to take off from red light, back firing from either the tail pipe or under the hood (almost seems like the engine is being flooded out with to much gas), my gas mileage has gotten worse. This vehicle should be recalled!!!.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2021

My Jeep Patriot will stall out on me unexpectedly while driving. I have had thousands of work done on it just for it to continue to happen. No shop has been able to figure out what is wrong due to no code showing up. It has been overheating on me and has been causing me to throw away a lot of money. I am very upset about this and the fact that there is nothing happening and all of these complaints is ridiculous!!.

14 Power Train problem

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2020

Cvt transmission started to slightly slip at around 90,000 miles and at the time I did not know that this was in fact the problem. As time went on it became more obvious what it was and of course after 100,000 miles is when the warranty was good nolonger so lost out on that.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2020

The throttle body assembly was repaired in November of 2019. It is July of 2020, I have driven the vehicle less than 2500 miles since the initial repair and the vehicle is producing the exact same symptoms as it was before the repair. It hesitates, almost stalls, and lunges while driving. Traction control light, check engine light and the drive by wire warning light all flash when the vehicle is started and running.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2020

I was turning onto my street and my wheels locked up. I parked car (my son was in the back 3. 9 years old) and noticed smoke under the hood, opened the hood and saw a huge fire. Went to store so had water - poured 6 water bottles on the fire to put it out.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2020

Two months ago my Jeep started bucking violently when driving after it sat for a month being driven maybe once a week. I refilled the tank with premium and it still didn't help. Took it to the shop and they couldn't find a problem. It stopped doing that for for about two weeks but now it stared doing it again. It does it when I'm am accelerating from a slow down and also once I get up to 60 on the highway.

20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2020

Driving on hwy 90 for an hour going 70mph. Loud whining sound started coming from the engine then transmission temperature light came on and wehicle started slowing down even with trying to keep speed. Speed kept decreasing so I pulled over for 20 minutes and went home.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2020

Pressure plate replaced twice and still not working with only 27301 miles. Went in for routine oil change no problems during the last warranty oil change things start to change. Returned to the dealership to express problem report back oil needed top off. Checked for recalls none reported. Truck continued to drive funny popping out of gear when driving and speed decrease while driving on the interstate. No warning lights or any indication something was wrong. I haven't driven my truck in three years due to dealership not having staff and no one is willing to work on Jeep vehicles. Total waste of money and no support. The sad part the tow truck driver towed my neighbors car and remembered towing my truck and stated he has towed many more since.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2020

I was driving on a street in a residential area and my Jeep started to jerk all of a sudden. I was no longer able to accelerate. This started happening in may and the last time is happened was June 22 2020. Jeep needs to put out a recall ASAP!.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2020

My car was in motion and I lost power while merging onto the highway and I was unable to get the car started back up. I got the car towed and when it arrived at the mechanic it started back up just fine, they were unable to duplicate the issue as no error message was on my dashboard, therefore their diagnostic device could not figure out what caused my car to stall. The mechanic kept my car for a while and it finally gave out on them again and they discovered by throttle body had gone out. I had this issue in may of 2017 and had it fixed at a Jeep dealership and less than 3 years later my car has the very same issue.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2020

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle loss motive power and stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram of winter haven (299 cypress gardens blvd, winter haven, FL 33880) however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 59,000.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

Catastrophic failure of throttle control while driving down the highway. Vechile began to sputter and immediately flashed the lightning bolt warning light dropping from 80mph to 10 mph. This was associated with the vechile violently sputtering. Vechile will start but when drive is engaged at low rpm nothing happens. With acceleration the car will sputter and not get past 15 miles per hour. During sputtering no power steering is avalible and braking is made difficult with sputtering.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2019

The crankshaft sensor failed causing the engine to stop while driving without warning on a city street in boston. The car was brought to the nearest garage where they replaced the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor, but then an engine code came up saying that the accelerator pedal also needed to be replaced. I am unsure if this was related to the crankshaft sensor issue or just a coincidence. The car then had to be towed to a Jeep dealer to replace the accelerator pedal and relearn the sensors. I noticed there was a recall on 2016 Jeep Patriots for the same crankshaft problem but no recall has been issued for the same problem occurring in 2015 Jeep Patriots. The engine died without warning and it is fortunate that this happened at ~20mph, it would have been disastrous at highway speeds.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2019

When traveling on the the interstate at about 80mph, the transmission oil overheat icon appears and I will begin to lose acceleration.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2019

On March 8, 2019, while driving at approximately 45 mph on a rural road, the engine stalled causing the car to lose power steering and the rpms to drop to 0. There was no check engine light indication that anything was wrong. On this occasion I was unable to restart the vehicle and had it towed to the dealership for repairs. The dealership stated that the battery failed diagnostic tests and replaced the battery. On March 22, 2019 while idling at a red light, the engine stalled again causing the rpms to drop to 0. I attempted to restart the vehicle and after two attempts the vehicle restarted and a check engine light was illuminated. I was able to drive to the nearest dealership where it was diagnosed that the camshaft/crankshaft sensor was malfunctioning. After subsequent research I located safety recall s89 / NHTSA 16-v-907 crankshaft camshaft sensor wire harness issued in February 2017 affecting 2016 Dodge journey, 2016 Jeep compass and 2016 Jeep Patriot.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2019

Purchased the 2015 Jeep Patriot 02/2018 from carmax in columbia, SC. Mileage was just over 27,000 miles. It came with a 5 speed manual transmission. 3/2/2019 - a t355 transaxle 2 wd, 5 speed transmission was replaced, and clutch. 4/15/2020 - Patriot was towed to the shop, carthage, TN. clutch went out, replaced the slave cylinder, master clutch cylinder. 6/26/2020 - took the Patriot to the shop, carthage, TN. Transaxle needs to be replaced. in 2019, the powertrain was still under manufacturer's warranty, we spoke to the Jeep dealership in south carolina, they refused to do the work. When we contacted Jeep 06/2020 when the Jeep transmission was deemed needed replacing again, josh, in management, informed us that Jeep would not do anything as the warranty had expired in February of 2020. Research has revealed that from 2007 to 2016, the 5 speed manual transmission is defective. We currently still owe 8000. 00 dollars on the vehicle. We are not willing to put any money into another transmission. By the time we did, we would have over 5000. 00 dollars in a worthless piece of garbage that is not reliable. Other issues: total right front rebuild within the first year of owning the vehicle. Overall, the vehicle is a lemon, and we need an investigation opened, as Jeep has refused to assist in anyway or to correct the issue.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2019

While I am driving, the car stops running. , the engine cuts off. I have to put the car in park or neutral to restart the engine. Sometimes it will start up sometimes I have to wait on it to starts. Today it stopped in the middle of the street and it did not start back up. . The car had to be pushed out the street. My Jeep will stop on the expressway while driving up to speed, it will stop on rural streets and while turning left or right it will shut down in the middle of the turn. . This is extremely dangerous because it only shuts down when the car is in motion. This has been happening for 3 months.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2018

While driving I made a right turn and then the "tire light" began to flash and a warning sound was heard then the "traction control light" began to flash and alert sound was heard and then a "red lightning bolt" warning light was flashing on the dashboard and the "engine light" turned on, all lights were lit up and the engine stalled and couldn't get passed 20mph even thought the accelerator was almost to the floor. The vehicle has only less than 32000 miles, and has had its regular maintenance. I've seen several similar complaints on Jeep Patriot forums and seen that the 2014 and 2016 had recalls for this or related issue. When stopping the vehicle idles high and still moves even though the brake is fully pressed, and the temperature rises fast. I was driving at night on a city street so luckily the wasn't much traffic. The lights came on before I lost engine power and I shut off the vehicle and turned it back on and they went away but that didn't happen the second time it occurred, the lights stayed on and that's when I also lost engine power and the vehicle would stall. Moves fine in reverse but because the vehicle is idling really high it takes off in reverse by itself without using the accelerator.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2018

When driving at normal highways speeds for extended periods the transmission temp warning light will come on and slow the vehicle speed to 40mph or less and if you do not pull the vehicle over and shut it off it will lose all power to the transmission and the vehicle will stop moving totally. This has happened several times, the first being a two hour trip from chesapeake virginia to richmond. We took the highway and maintained the speed limit of 55-70 mph as posted and about one hour into our journey the vehicle lost power abruptly and slowed to 40 mph while we were traveling 70 in the left lane and then totally lost all forward travel almost causing us to be slammed into by an 18 wheeler. The most recent time was two days ago July 18,2018. We were driving to connecticut from chesapeake virginia and about three and half hours into our journey the transmission temp warning light came on and the vehicle within less than 2 minutes had lost all forward motion leaving us stuck in the left lane on the new jersey turnpike for atleast half an hour while cars zoomed by. We were traveling the posted speed limit of 65 mph. Then again a few hours later in the trip it did the exact same thing. I called the dealership and they said that it's stated in the owners manual that this will happen. I find it extremely frustrating that they are able to sell a car that under normal operating conditions will just shut down! this is not an isolated incident with the Patriot and after some research it seems Jeep no longer puts the cvt transmission in the Patriot due to this exact problem. I googled this and there are so many forums where people are so frustrated that Jeep is able to sell this lemon. We've taken it to a mechanic and they agree this is a problem that can't be fixed as it's a cvt transmission design flaw and our only course of action is to put a brand ne transmission in. Fixthis!.

33 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2018

Driving vehicle along the highway and it completely shut off. Had to put the vehicle in neutral to pull over to the side of the highway.

34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

I want ro know why the crank sensor isnt a recall. Mine went out this morning and luckily I was in my neighborhood and not on the hwy. It's dangerous and my car just cut off on me. I read this morning and there is quite of few people that had the same issue. There could be parents out there with a car full of kids and it could be extremely hot or cold outside. There should be a recall on this item for safety.

35 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

We own a 2015 Jeep Patriot, bought used in 2016. It now has about 75,000 miles on it and has served us well. That is, until the beginning of December. My husband heard an odd squeaking sound in the rear, and took it to our local mechanic (who is sae certified, and has worked as a service manager for both Chrysler and Ford) thinking that maybe we just needed more body clips on the bumper. After driving it around the block the mechanic thought it sounded more like worn shocks, so they put it up on the rack. Good thing we didn't wait much longer to bring it in, because the left rear axle was breaking loose from the frame the welding was still intact, but right beside the welding is a large break. And of course, several other parts are broken as well. Neither my husband nor the mechanic saw any signs of impact anywhere down there. There were no large dents, marks, protruding or bulging metal members of the vehicle's frame, bent or contorted axle members or twisted or torn parts of the chassis. Neither do we have any recollection of running over anything, or being hit by something. Our mechanic's take away was that this was a factory issue and needed to be handled by Jeep. But neither the dealership nor Jeep customer service are helping. This should still be covered by the power train warranty. But they won't take responsibility for it. My biggest concern is that this is not going to be the only Jeep Patriot that this happens to. If this is indeed a factory or material defect, then somewhere down the road someone else will have this happen and they might not be so fortunate as to discover it before the axle does fall off and cause injury or fatality.
