Air Bag Light On problems of the 2016 Jeep Patriot

Five problems related to air bag light on have been reported for the 2016 Jeep Patriot. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

The airbag light illuminated once in 2017. Then it went off and came back on 4 years later. On January 15, 2021 it came on about 20 times. And then all weekend. I was told by my dealer it was a sensor in the passenger seat. In this case the passenger side doesn't have a fully operational passenger side airbag. This is a huge safety concern, as someone could get hurt or possibly killed. The vehicle was in motion on all accounts on city streets.

2 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2019

Airbag light stays on all the time whether running or stationary, the problem started after battery change at dealership. Dealer says that it needs new ipm integrated power module $918 + tax??.

3 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2018

I believe the clockspring is faulty. Air bag light on, horn not working and the step/reset button on steering wheel stopped working. Scared the air bag wont deploy if in a accident.

4 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2016

While driving slowly (~10 mph) sb I prepared to make a right-turn (wb), in the only lane that turns right. As I neared the intersection the light turned green, enabling me and the (1) lane on my left to go (it goes sb). No car was ahead of me (to turn). The street I was turning onto had one (wb) lane, and two lanes (stopped), that go eb. Note: (may be relevant), I frequently down-shift (automatic) transmissions (using the "paddles" or "buttons", whatever's on the shift column), on all automatic trans. Cars I drive, when I slow down. I do this to save wear & tear on my brakes, when approaching stop-signs or red-lights. I down shift gradually, just like on a manual trans. When it's time to go, I hold the paddle in the "up-shift" mode, until I see "drive" on the trans. Indicator. In this accident, as the light turned green (the trans. Was in a low gear), I held the paddle in "up-shift" mode (note: I may have clicked the paddle 1 gear up before it went to "drive", I don't remember), and started the turn, barely pressing the accelerator. When I was appr. Halfway (45 degrees) into the turn (pointed swb at the opposite two lanes), I felt the engine "stagger" (like if you accidentally shift a manual trans. Into a high gear but you meant a low gear), and in a fraction of a second-the car rocketed ahead (I heard rpms) slamming me into the wb car(s) so fast, I didn't even make 90 degrees, nor could I brake (I tried). The 1st car impacted went backward (and to the right) hitting the car behind, and hit the car in the right lane. Note: 1. Jeep was totaled. 2. This accident was in dry weather, mid-morning @ intersection I drive nearly every day. 3. The airbag failed & I was briefly knocked-out w/some injuries. 4. This is not: " I hit the gas but meant the brake" case, I went from slow to rocket-ship. 5. I've been driving > 40 years w/o accident. 5. I'm a pilot w/good reflexes.

5 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2016

Takata recall. I was involved in a accident on March 14, 2016. I was stopped at a stop sign when a SUV was making a right turn to the street I was stopped waiting to make my right turn. The gentleman was speeding and took a hard right, he lost control of his vehicle and hit me full impact on the driver side. The entire driver side had to be replaced. The airbags did not inflate, the airbag lights did not turn on. At the impact that I was hit they should have gone off and no one knows or could explain why they didn't deploy. When my vehicle was repaired and I went to pick up, then the airbag lights were on and had to be reset and the seatbelt was not properly working (that had to be replaced).
