1 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2014

Fuel spills all over, every time I fill the tank.

2 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2014

I was fueling the vehicle and the automatic fuel shut off valve or whatever is inside the fuel tank malfunctioned. Fuel ejected from within the fill neck and was propelled onto my face and in my eyes! I have never had this happen with any vehicle I have owned or fueled. I was standing adjacent to my vehicle as most do when getting gas, I heard the gas gurgle like it normally does, the pump clicked off and a second later my eyes were slammed shut and burning. After researching the issue I have come to find that Chrysler is aware of this issue and has actually taken steps to correct it in 2007 and newer vehicles. I don't know to what extent that is true but this is a huge hazard. There is some plastic valving within the filler neck that fails to keep fuel within the tank and it is apparently adversely affected by the ethanol mixture in gasoline. That's the explanation on many web sites. I don't care what causes the issue but it is a poor, dangerous design. If it was a freak issue then I would take it in stride but to find that Chrysler is aware of it and doing nothing about it for my model year is appalling. This is an issue of a highly flammable fuel under pressure being projected upwards toward anyone fueling a vehicle and it's my understanding that the NHTSA received a report from Chrysler that the issue existed yet they were not required to recall any and all vehicles experiencing the issue. Gasoline in the eyes is very painful. Period. I was unable to drive from the gas station and had to have another motorist move my vehicle from the pumps. My daughter routinely stands by me when "daddy does things" and I can't imagine how I would have felt if she was there that day. In my opinion, your agency was developed in order to protect the motoring public from this very type of poor design in the automotive industry and I trust that you will make it right.

3 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2013

The gas tank spills every time the Jeep is fueled. The neck doesn't respond fast enough that the tank is full and it continues to accept gasoline until it spits gasoline back out of the tank. The gasoline then runs down the quarter panel, onto the ground, and sometimes onto the person filling the tank if they are holding the fueling nozzle. It is not good for the environment or the vehicle. This occurs at every gas station as well.

4 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that fuel spilled out of the fuel tank after it was filled. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the fuel sensor that controlled the fuel level needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 89,000. . . . Updated 05/22/13.

5 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2012

Fuel tank spits out gasoline when filling tank this happens 99 times out of 100 when fueling.

6 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2012

Every time I fill up my gas tank , the vehicle doesn't detect when it's full and spits gas up all over the car and myself. This is very dangerous as fuel also ends up all over the ground. Please help!.

7 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2012

When filling up the tank on my 2006 rubicon unlimited, fuel will overflow without warning. It does this every time I fill up. If I do not stop it in time, fuel will overflow out with enough force that it will cover the side of the Jeep and who ever is filling it up. My 2007 Jeep Wrangler rubicon unlimited did the same thing and Chrysler recalled it and replaced the tank and I have had no issues since.

8 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2012

When filling my fuel tank by hand the pump shut off too late and spilled gas all over the side of my Jeep. This happens at every gas station no matter the circumstances.

9 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

Every time you fill up with gas the fuel tank will overflow while pumping gas.

10 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2011

Fuel overflows each time the tank is filled.

11 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2011

When filling the gas tank, the gas pump auto shut off works, but only after spraying gasoline on me, the vehicle and the ground. This has happened 4 times in a row at different pumps of different gas stations.

12 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2011

Every time I get gas at the pump, at the end of filling the tank it gushes out a ton of gasoline all over the side of my Jeep, all over the pump/handle itself, creating a dangerous fire hazard. This happens every time. I've read online it's a known issue but hasn't yet had a recall or a fix? so am filing in hopes of a fix from the manufacturer. I've also read there is some kind of fix but it may be costly. But it's a safety issue and needs resolved.

13 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2011

When filling the fuel tank, there is severe back splash when tank reaches full and nozzle automatically shuts off.

14 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2011

The fuel filler on my 2006 Jeep Wrangler does not prevent the fuel from spilling when I fill my fuel tank. This problem happens every time (100%) I refuel. The problem occurs no matter how slowly I fill the tank. Spraying gasoline is dangerous and toxic. I feel this problem needs to be addressed by Jeep.

15 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2011

Upon filling the gas tank there is consistent fuel spill back. Fuel spews from the filler opening. Second owner, not sure if this has been occurring prior to date and milage above.

16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2011

I'm writing the NHTSA to provide my experience with a gas overflow issue on my 2006 Jeep unlimited. Without fail, at each fill-up, the gas nozzle will allow gas to backflow out of the filler neck, past the vapor recovery system and spray outward and drain down the car. In most cases, as much as 1. 5-2 quarts of gasoline is spewing out of the filler neck. In almost all cases, employees from the station must come out and complete remediation efforts to absorb the spilled gas. In most cases, I receive a good dousing of gas on my hands and clothes. I have contacted the dealership and because my car is out of warranty due to age, not miles, they have informed me that I will need to pay upwards of $1,000 for a new gas tank with the same faulty check-valve design. I understand that Chrysler is aware of the issue and that they state the cause to be from a swollen check-valve related to ethanol gas. I am at a loss as to how to proceed and am looking for the NHTSA to step in and force a recall.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2011

Fuel tank overfills and spills gas on the vehicle, the ground, and the person who is pumping gas everytime the tank is filled up.

18 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2011

At 20,000 miles on the Jeep any time that we fill the gas tank, at any station, it spills out 1/2 to 1 cup of fuel and sprays all over the place. This is unsafe for us personally and the environment. It doesn't make a difference if the pump is going fast or slow it spits constantly and then spills out at the end. We never top off. The Jeep currently only has 22,000 miles on it.

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2011

Whilel filling fueling fill spills out of tank.

20 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

This started in October 2011 with my 2006 Jeep Wrangler. When I put gas in the tank, as soon as its full and the pump shuts off, gas bursts out of the tank all over the Jeep, the ground, everywhere. This is certainly a safety issue, along with an environmental issue! I'm hearing about so many Jeeps that are doing this. Why is there no recall? I'm having it looked at by my local Jeep dealer, but so far they said Chrysler is aware of this but has "no fix" on this situation.

21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2011

Every time I put gas in the car, fuel spills out of the gas tank filler hole all over the car. I have been fillling gas tanks for 40 years and I know all the tricks. I do not top off and am careful to reduce flow when I think it is near the top. Doesnt matter. It spills out anyway. At every gas station.

22 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2011

The gas tank overflow shutoff doesn't work. Once the tank fills, gas spills out all over which could create a safety problem.

23 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2011

Every time I fill up my gas tank the fuel spills out and down the side of my Jeep. I have witnessed this being a problem with numerous Jeep owners and believe that this is a faulty inlet check valve that is not only costing me money from wasted fuel but also creating a environmental hazard from spilled gasoline.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

When filling the gas tank every time the fuel sprays out of the filler nozzle before the pump can auto shutoff. Every time - this causes gas to leak down the side of the vehicle, on me before I learned to get out of the way and all over the ground. The only way to stop this from happening is to not fill up all the way with gas. Otherwise it does this every single fill up.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Gas still out when filling up gas tank. The system doesn't stop at gas pumps all other cars ever driven. Gas always stills out before it stops the pump. This occurs at all pumps and appears to be a common and ongoing issue with Jeep owners.

26 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2011

My 2006 Jeep Wrangler rubicon gas tank overflows every time I fill it up. Sprays gas everywhere.

27 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2011

Fuel overflow while filling up the tank.

28 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2011

The gas overflows out of the fuel tank when filling. The stop doesn't come on at the right time.

29 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2011

2006 Jeep Wrangler. Gas tank fillup, at any gas station, results in tank overflow. Burps out up to 1/4 gallon of gas before pump stops. This is a well known and common problem for all Jeep Wranglers, most model years. Happens every time I fill up, not just occasionally.

30 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

2006 Jeep Wrangler, unlimited - gasoline overflows from tank when filling up. Happens every time, not just occasionally and covers the side of Jeep in gas and often gas sprays onto my hands and clothing.

31 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

On my 2006 Jeep Wrangler sport, the gas tank overflows fuel every single time I have to refil the tank. The tank apparently does not vent properly, which causes the auto-shut-off feature on gas pumps to fail until the tank overflows, spitting gasoline out (over a foot from the side of the vehicle at times), hitting the individual filling up the tank and making a mess of the side of the vehicle. This fuel overflow issue occurs 100% of the time. Upon speaking wth the dealership, I was told that they will not warranty this, but that it is a "common" problem among 1997-present Wranglers. Chrysler issued a recall for this problem on 2007-later wrangers, but refuses to take responsibility for the 2006 and older models. Reviewing both local and national Jeep internet forums, I have seen forum threads on this topic with literally hundreds of 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler owners claiming the same problem as I am having with my 2006 Wrangler. The cost to replace the fuel tank, the only solution, is at a cost of $1100-$1200. This is a very serious problem and needs to be addressed immediately. To date, I have not had any personal injury or damage, as asked below, but that is only a matter of time!.

32 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

On my 2006 Jeep Wrangler rubicon unlimited, the gas tank "pukes" fuel every single time I have to refil the tank. The tank apparently does not vent properly, which causes the auto-shut-off feature on gas pumps to fail until the tank overflows, spitting gasoline out (over a foot from the side of the vehicle at times), hitting the individual filling up the tank and making a mess of the side of the vehicle. This fuel "puking" issue occurs 100% of the time. Upon speaking wth the dealership, I was initially told that they will not warranty this, but that it is a "common" problem among 1997-present Wranglers. Chrysler issued a recall for this problem on 2007-later wrangers, but refuses to take responsibility for the 2006 and older models. As a member of both local and national Jeep internet forums, I have seen forum threads on this topic with literally hundreds of 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler owners claiming the same problem as I am having with my 2006 Wrangler.

33 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

Fuel tank consistently overfills. Problems causes gasloine to overfill the tank and flow down the side of the vehicle and collect in a pool. This problem intitally started slowly but now occurs consistently at all gasoline stations. Based on other Jeep Wrangler owners experience this appears to be a common problem that should be corrected by the manufacturer.

34 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

Gas spills when filling up gas tank, happens constantly.

35 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2011

Gas tank auto stop does not work, causing overfilling and spills gas on vehicle and ground. This happens every time I fill up at every gas staion I visit.
