Seven problems related to steering column have been reported for the 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Clock spring self-destructed at just over 45000 miles. Airbag light is now on and the ribbon cable is unwinding out of the steering column. Same issue that was being reported by owners and has been recalled for 2007 model year.
2008 Jeep Wrangler jk 4 door 4x4, air bag light came on, took to dealer they said it is the clock spring in the steering column, Jeep extended the warranty in the 2007, but not the 2008 which the dealer said they have had alot of the 2008 go out as they are the same part, they need to extend the warranty to the 2008 model being a safety issue [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Clockspring came apart inside steering column. Lost ability to steer, air bag shut off, use horn, and cruise control. Warranty did not cover.
The steering wheel momentarily wouldn't turn until I forced it and broke what I'm assuming is the clockspring assembly. Very dangerous if my mom or someone else who wouldn't have been able to force the break while driving the Jeep. The airbag, abs, esp, and traction control lights all came on in the dash. There is a white ribbon wire now hanging out between the steering wheel and column.
2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara has had electrical and engine issues including stalling out on multiple occasions as well as not starting. I have had the battery changed multiple times and have had issues such as all the lights, buttons, alert/warning lights going off simultaneously followed by complete engine and electrical shut-off requiring tow-service to dealership. The dealership replaced the battery and said everything was fine. After that I have had multiple stalls and non-starts and the dealership again says I need a new battery. I have had three batteries in three years. The horn has stopped working around 50,000 miles. The first time I brought it to the dealership they said they needed to replace my steering wheel and complete steering column. I decided I could live without a horn for a short while. The next time I brought it to the dealership they reported that I need a new clockspring which also controls my airbags which "might or might not still be functional. " seeing as I have had issues with the electrical components before, including malfunctions in the alert/warning lights, the dealership could not tell for sure if my airbags work or not. The locks to my Jeep have stopped working from both the inside door switch and the key fob. The dealership diagnosed this as a "total integrated power module" (tipm) malfunction resulting in loss of electrical power. They explained that there is a back-order on tipm pieces nationwide and they do not know when I could get mine replaced. When asked how the tipm could break, the dealership said there was no one way and that it "just happens. " my doors currently only lock/unlock by hand, and sometimes when I lock them by hand and return to my Jeep, the doors are unlocked. Furthermore, the automatic security lock feature when the vehicle starts moving does not work either.
Death wobble 2008 Wrangler 2nd repair, still not fixed. First time I noticed it in 2010, less than 25000 miles. I assumed it was the road condition. When I realized that it would happen under various road conditions, I noted other factors realizing that it seemed to occur at approximately 57 mph. At first the vibration was just annoying and intermittent. Then it got worse and I was scared because it shook so violently at 57 mph. I thought the vehicle was going to roll spontaneously. In March 2010, took it to a dealer; they said they couldn't recreate the problem so couldn't fix it. I called another dealer and the service tech (in 2010) mentioned, "Jeep wobble"- I googled it and found very little info- just some Jeep owner blogs that described exactly what I felt. The dealer fixed the problem (under warranty) by replacing the steering column shock (or something). Since I had it repaired, I still experienced the normal, minor vibration that happens around 55 mph. Recently (Jan 2013) the death wobble returned with a vengeance. Regardless of road conditions, at 57 mph it shakes so badly that it feels like I will loose control. I took it to the dealership and they said that they will replace the shock again and they mentioned that the part has been improved with brackets or some such. Of course, at 57000 miles, it is out of warranty and I had to pay the $230 for the repair. The tech told me that this is a common issue and I will probably have to replace it again in another 25000 miles. I call bs! the Jeep has never been off-road, never mistreated, always maintained. Neither dealer nor manufacturer ever mentioned this TSB during the 2013 repair. When I picked it up, it was not fixed. Jeep CO. Has agreed to reimburse me for all but $100 (deductible) but why do I have to keep paying for repairs on a known issue? vibration is so bad, it could cause me to wreck.
