Nine problems related to transmission slip out of gear have been reported for the 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When pulling out into the road after stopping at a stop sign the transmission slipped out of 1st gear. It was dangerous as I lost my ability to accelerate when I needed it the most (crossing a busy road). It has been slipping or popping out of 1st gear w increasing frequency. I took it to a transmission repair shop and they found a service bulletin posted by the manufacture of essentially a known issue that other people were complaining about the same problem. The Jeep has 28k miles on it and is in great condition otherwise. Apparently this is a known defect and not causes by normal wear and tear. This problem has the potential to cause a serious accident. The dealership won't fix it under warranty and I feel it should be covered as this problem is both a safety issue and known defect.
First a whining sound began in the case and got worse over the next 10,000 miles, then at 90,000 it wouldnt shift out of 4 wheel drive for a varying amount of time maybe 15 seconds one time or 10 minutes other times etc. When it did shift out of 4 wheel it would bang so loud and hard it felt like you ran over a large object, it actually threw you up in the air a bit . When you got stuck in snow and needed 4 wheel it only would make a ratcheting sound. Jeep refused to fix it under warranty because its a rhd postal Jeep. It cost $1744. 00 to fix it with a rebuilt case that can only be purchased from Jeep. It is dangerous because when it shifted it went out of control and when you were stuck in snow you didnt know when it would shift into or out of 4 wheel.
Jeep randomly jumps out of first gear when pulling away from a dead stop. Leaving the car in neutral while pulling out into traffic. On more than one occasion this happened while making a left turn across a busy street.
When accelerating from a stop/near-stop, the car will violently jump out of gear. The first time it occurred I thought I was rear-ended. It is difficult to intentionally repeat: the only pattern is that it is a first gear, accelerating from slow speed issue. Beginning to be intimidated to pull into traffic. It is increasing in frequency and severity. Lithia dealer says it is a Jeep issue. Jeep says it is a dealer issue. I miss my 1999 sahara.
While driving on highway at approximately 55-60 mph my Jeep has started to violently shake and shudder after hitting a bump. It will only stop shaking after pulling over to the side of the road and slowing down to 15-20 mph or stopping all together. The day it started we were taking a trip to new orleans and it happened 6 or 7 times in less than 100 miles. I will be taking it in to the dealer in the morning, but after a quick search of the NHTSA database it seem this has been a regular occurrence and recurrence with Jeeps for many years. Luckily we were on a secondary highway when this occurred and not on a major interstate at 70-75 mph (yet). The wife is now terrified to drive the vehicle and I'm not to comfortable with it at this point. To make matters worse we're being stationed overseas and planned on letting our son in college use the vehicle which doesn't seem like a great option at this point. We've also noticed, for the past few weeks, the manual transmission will jump out of 1st gear when taking off. I looked forward to owning a Jeep 4-door for some time and this is rather disappointing and I wouldn't have even considered buying it if I had been told this would happen, especially with less than 20,000 miles on it, none of which are off-roading miles. I believe Jeep should have to warn it's potential customers if they do not want to bother fixing an obvious design flaw and should have to remove all their "trail rated" badges from all vehicles. It's no wonder Chrysler is having financial troubles since they can't make a 4x4 that can handle a bump.
Vehicle jumps out of 1st gear when you are pulling out. It almost broke my wrist. Dealer refuses to fix unless they can replicate the problem. Even though they have a service bulletin issued on April 20, 2010. This is very unsafe. Can someone help me?.
Randomly as you start in first gear from a dead stop the transmission shifter jumps out of first into neutral. The jump happens so violently that the first time it happened I had to make sure I was not rear ended. With this jumping out of gear I fear that driving into rush hour traffic I could be in an accident because of the loss of movement going into or thru traffic.
Over 8 times in the past month my 2009 Jeep Wrangler has violently slipped out of first gear when trying to accelerate. When this happens the car stops suddenly and there is a loud bang like one would expect in a rear end collision. I am lucky this has not happened while in an intersection or while trying to avoid a collision. The dealership will not even look into the problem if they cannot re-create the incident which happens at unpredictable times. This has the potential for serious injury not only for me but others.
2007-2010 Jeep jk Wrangler (all models) manual 6 speed transmission transmission violently jumps out of gear (jog) in first and second gear when starting from a stop. The action is quick, violent and sounds like the vehicle hit a curb or another vehicle. The movement of the shift handle is violent enough to cause hand injury including broken bones. In addition, this is a safety concern as the vehicle can become momentarily unable to accelerate from a stop or slow speed (I. E. Avoiding other vehicles, objects etc. ). This problem happens almost daily on this particular vehicle. Some quick research reveals that this seems to be a fairly common problem as documented by other Jeep owners/operators.
